Now, let's play together...under the clearest of blue skies.

Erin slowly ascended the stairs of the wind tower, moving from the first floor to the second. Ah, the floor is padded...am I supposed to take off my shoes? she wondered, Wait, no...this is the training room, right. Chizu's office is two floors above here... She raised her head, and then saw an amazing sight - the Aeon, Valefor, wings and all. "Ah, it's Valefor!" Such a reaction was natural, as to Erin at least, the Aeons were majestic figures, Valefor especially. And more than that, she hadn't been expecting to see him here. I was going to ask Chizu where he was, but it turns out he's right here...yay, I don't have to bother Chizu this way! Erin somewhat hesitantly walked towards him, across the padded floor. The Aeon was a bit more intimidating in person than the girl remembered. "Hello...Erm..." She had decided after school to come here and meet him, but when she got here, she realized that she didn't actually have a good idea of what she wanted to say. "We didn't get much of a chance to talk at the big meeting..." she explained, "Er, should I call you...Mr. Valefor...? I'm not sure how to address Aeons..." She took a moment to collect herself. Valefor's presence was extremely pressuring to her, both due to his demeanor and his status. "My name is Erin. It's nice to meet you again, sir..." Edited by Erin, Jan 20 2011, 03:29 PM.

Valefor didn't spend too much time in the Wind Tower itself during operational hours. For the most part, he was too large to navigate inside the tower easily, although being an Aeon of wind had given him some advantages in that regard. However, another reason he didn't often go into the tower while students were in it was because it tended to be loud. Late at night, the only person he had to deal with was Chizu, and that was if she was here and not visiting her fellow instructors in other towers. Of course, he did occasionally feel the need to venture downstairs and see for himself how his students were doing. Chocobo was constantly greeting people, and the Sylphs knew almost all the elemancers in the tower, but as secondhand sources, neither were very reliable. Chocobo tended to be too lenient when it came to giving criticism, and the Sylphs gave too much of it, all at once and all in that giggling childish manner that they tended to use. He hadn't expected to be spoken to, however. He turned his head towards the elemancer that had called him out, his eyes narrowing slightly as she addressed him. "Erin Oasella, correct?" he asked. "Call me Valefor. Is there something you need?" Something Erin might notice right away if she had the chance to interact with the Sylphs and Chocobo was that Valefor was not as...personable as any of them were. The Sylphs liked to talk. They liked to tease and twist words around, but they liked to interact nonetheless. Chocobo simply had an amiable personality, to the point of giving aeromancers rides if he had nowhere else to go. Valefor was neither. |

"Uhm, n-nothing specifically..." Erin said, sheepishly. It was hard for her to make eye contact with him when he was so overbearing. Maybe this was a bad idea...am I just needlessly annoying him...? Erin looked up to him and tried to explain herself, "I just...wanted to meet you, kind of...I just thought it was a little odd that you're one of the wind Aeons and we, we hadn't really had a proper conversation, so..." Becoming increasingly nervous, she continued timidly, "Uhm, if I'm being a bother, I-I can...I mean, I don't want to waste your time or anything..." |

If Valefor had them, he would have raised an eyebrow. As it was, he settled for giving the girl a look. He had never studied her properly and didn't know much about her except for the fact that Chizu believed Erin knew more about non-offensive aeromancy than she did...which wasn't hard, in all honesty. She looked...young. Then again, most of the elemancy students did. That was part of the reason why they were students. Others, like Lavender, were really just here to train. "I'm not doing anything," he said. Was she always this timid, or was she just intimidated by him? Again, not hard. But quite a number of these teenagers didn't seem to know what respect was anymore. It was difficult to say. "I don't usually talk with students," he said, in response to her comment about them having a proper conversation. "I leave that to the Sylphs." By his standards, he was actually being nice. After all, the girl hadn't done anything to annoy him yet and seemed a lot more polite than some of her counterparts. But it was apparent that if Erin wanted to have a conversation, she was going to have to lead. |

"I-I see..." Erin replied. She was getting the feeling that she should probably leave him alone, but still, he hadn't directly said that he didn't want to talk to her... "I...I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but..." She began uneasily, not sure how to put what she wanted to ask into words. "Well...Chizu's probably told you about me, er, aeromancery-wise..." She didn't know if Valefor would care for her worries, but she already knew what Chizu would say if she told her this. She would just say something reassuring about how noncombat abilities were helpful too, and Erin would feel better for a while. But only for a while. "Damon...Damon and Chizu both tell me that I'm really good at it, but...I just...I don't...feel strong." She looked down and away as she spoke. "I know they mean it, but...I'm not really good at fighting...I know fighting isn't everything, really, I do, but...I don't feel any more useful when I tell myself that...I find myself wanting to be like Chizu a lot, but...even if I had the power, I don't think I could..." The only time she could think of when her power had really been a big help was against the spider monster in the treasure cave. And even then, they probably could have won without her. By the time she had pinpointed the invisible spider's location, Chizu had already found it herself and was tearing its face off six different ways. Even at the power station incident, Chizu's team had already started fighting one of the electric beasts by the time she had tracked them down, already having gathered more information than her. Jameson's heroic speeches had picked her up a few times during the heartless invasion, but they were good for temporary bursts of willpower at best. She had been keeping herself satisfied with sour grapes, but the more missions she went on, the more she felt like the Aquaman of Hyakuji. She hated herself for not being willing to fight. If she wanted to, she could probably learn to make blades like Chizu and Lavender could. But she could never bring herself to do something like that. The sight of blood made her stomach turn. Just the thought of actually cutting someone made her nauseous. She had tried to fight harder against the heartless, but all she had learned was that it was better left to the experts. She wasn't expecting Valefor to show her some easy road to power that she hadn't seen until now, but if nothing else, she knew he would tell her the truth. Edited by Erin, Feb 2 2011, 01:38 PM.

Valefor stared at Erin for a moment, as if considering her words. There was an odd expression on his face, one that was difficult to place, mostly because his face didn't carry many human facial features. He looked over the small aeromancer in front of him, as if considering what she was capable of. After a while, long enough to make anyone feel a little nervous, he nodded and turned around. "Come with me," he said, making his way up the stairs. It should have been difficult for Valefor to make the movement, and it would have been had he been an ordinary bird, but for some reason, he managed it with ease. It just served to show how otherworldly he was. He didn't say a word to her as they walked, but once he passed Chizu's office, one thing would be clear to Erin. They were headed to the Roost. |

Ah...is he angry at me? Erin thought nervously, He can't be taking me to the hospital floor...so it's either Chizu's office or...the Roost...but, but isn't the Roost off-limits to students? She was becoming more and more distressed as she climbed the stairs behind Valefor, Well, if Valefor is with me it's probably allowed... Erin just followed silently behind Valefor, too afraid to speak. She had no idea what Valefor thought of her (if anything), or what his plans for her were. They passed by Chizu's office and her suspicions were confirmed, he was definitely taking her to the top of the tower. "I've...I've never been to the Roost before..." Erin said nervously. She just desperately wanted to get rid of the imposing silence that Valefor seemed to enjoy causing. |

"It generally isn't allowed," said Valefor. "But you're with me, so you'll be fine." It had been an agreed upon rule when this arrangement was first set up that only the Towers' masters would be allowed to access the floor where the elementals lived, but this hadn't been a rule that the instructors had come up with. Rather, it had been the one made by the Aeons. After all, the reason they found the instructors in the first place was so they wouldn't have to teach. Valefor was certain he could break his own rule. He stepped forward, and a gust of wind moved around him, pushing open the heavy double doors that led to the roost. He stepped inside, not looking behind him to see if Erin was following him. The Roost was a large cavernous room with high ceilings, high enough for even Valefor to stretch his wings in, although he wouldn't be able to fly. There was a large open window to one side for him to exit and enter through, and air currents flowed through the chamber. There were no signs of any other Aeons. Like most Wind Aeons, they didn't spend much time indoors, even if their nest was as suited to their element as this one. "The wind has many forms," said Valefor, turning to face Erin once the doors to the Roost shut behind them. "From the cool breezes of spring..." He flexed his wings slightly, his feathers rustling, and Erin would be able to feel the air currents shift, the wind becoming a feather-light breeze that brushed over her skin as it blew in from the west. "...to the arid winds of summer..." Another movement and the wind would change direction, becoming drier and stronger as it blew in from the south. The wind would seem almost warm as it brushed across Erin, but there was aggression to it, spread out over its surface. "...to the stormy winds of autumn..." A third shift, this time bringing in wind from the east. This wind was more chaotic than the first two, twisting, turning and coiling and bringing with it the promise of rain. "...and to the biting winds of winter." The wind shifted direction a final time, blowing over Erin from the north. This time, the wind was sharp, blowing past her quickly and bringing with it a line of chilling cold. It wouldn't be hard to imagine it as a blade. Valefor lowered his wings and the wind died down, becoming still again. "The wind encompasses everything from a still day to a full blown hurricane. A true aeromancer must master the entire scope of the wind, learning all of its nuances, understanding its breadth and depth. In this, everyone in this Tower, including Chizu, fails." He paused for a moment, letting Erin absorb this. "But life, such as it is, is about learning. You use the autumn and the spring winds, the gentler middle grounds. Chizu tends towards summer and winter, the extremes. At first it looks like comparing the two is impossible, but what Chizu doesn't understand is that they are parts of the same whole. What you can do, she can't." He paused for another moment. "I will attempt to teach you offensive aeromancy today. Show me what you already know." |

Erin took a moment to take in everything Valefor said. It reminded her of the conversation that she had with Damon while they ate lunch together in the lounge, two days ago. He had told her that Chizu sometimes wanted to be able to do the things she did, but she never thought that it was out of more than convenience. She hadn't seen it as being the way Valefor explained it to her, as being two, equal sides of the same coin. "O-offensive...?" She was taken aback, a bit. She did want to be more like Chizu, but it all seemed very sudden. But the last thing she was going to do was tell Valefor that she didn't want to learn. But Valefor's last line was what worried her. 'Show me what you already know.' If he had taken her to a wide, open room with windows, and told her to show him what she knew about offensive aeromancery, when he was the only possible target in the room..."W-Wait...are you asking me to attack you...?" |

Valefor gave the girl one of his looks--the looks that said plainly that if he had an eyebrow, he would be raising it at her. He would have thought that that much was abundantly clear, but she seemed hesitant now. Had he misunderstood her intentions? He thought that she wanted training, and he would give training in the area that the person lacked. He nodded at her. "That would be...the best way for me to measure your abilities, yes," he said. He paused for a moment, considering that she might be afraid of attacking him. "Do not worry about me. You wouldn't be able to cause any serious damage." He frowned, studying her. "I won't be able to teach you anything if I don't know where you already stand. I won't ask you again." Idle conversation was not Valefor's strong point. |

Erin took a deep breath. She didn't like the idea of attacking an ally, but Valefor insisted it was the best way... Okay, I can do this...just mentally replace Valefor with someone I don't like. ... Crap, there isn't anyone that I don't like. The more she thought about doing it, the less she wanted to do it. So she decided to just do it without thinking about it. She closed her eyes and began to make a contract with the air around her. The air in the room began to take on a green tint, signifying that it was her domain. She didn't have a very strong will, so it probably wouldn't be that big of an issue for another aeromancer to wrest control of it from her, but for any purely physical interference, she had the final say on what goes and what doesn't. It took about a second for her to expand her influence. She didn't take all of the air in the room, since she didn't need that much. Wordlessly, she began to compress the air she did take into a small area. With her eyes closed, she could clearly see the air currents changing as the air flowed towards a central focus. It had taken one second for Erin to grab the air, and another two to pull it together. After three seconds, she had a sphere of compressed air, about a meter in diameter. The air was at least 20 times more dense than normal atmospheric conditions. If left alone, it would simply expand in all directions explosively, but Erin held it together, keeping it still. It was a bit like trying to hold a beach ball underwater. She held it for only a second longer to let it build up energy before releasing it all in a single direction - straight towards Valefor. She still had her eyes closed, but she could still sense his location through the air around him. Her windsight exploded into chaos as the blast of air was released, taking less than a second to reach its target. All total, the attack took a little less than 5 seconds to execute. The backlash of air rushed through Nickle's onyx lockes as he stood behind Erin, watching her attack Valefor. He'd only just gotten there a few moments ago and remained very still and very quiet so as to not disturb the young aeromancer's concentration. Nickle had made sure to conceal his power, because in all honesty an electromancer is the biggest disturbance and aeromancer could've had no matter where they were. Once Erin had launched her attack, Nickle spoke and stepped forward, "Mosh mosh. Sorry for interrupting you two." Even if Valefor was distracted by his entrance, he kinda wanted to see if the Aeon would be blown onto his backside because of it. "Just the aeromancer I wanted to see, Erin-chan, I have something for you." Nickle walked up to Erin, only having had spoken with her a couple of times in the past and being knocked on his backside by her in Traverse Town. "I have the materia you requested. Sorry it took so long, the machine's been acting kinda glitchy lately.' With that said, Nickle touched his skin gently and began to pull the slightly large marble of yellow materia out from under it. He preffered having his materia under his skin as oppossed to on something that and he kinda liked the tingly feeling of materia being put inside and extracted from his body. He held out his palm with the yellow materia for Erin, "There you go sugarcube." |

Valefor extended his wings, bringing them around himself just as the attack hit. The blast of wind slammed straight into the elemental's wings, parting around him and sending a backlash of air on both sides. When the dust cleared, Valefor parted his wings and flattened them back against his back, revealing himself to be unharmed. He nodded once at Erin in acknowledgment. He was starting to understand the girl's personal style a little bit more. Her preparation for the attack had been slower and more graceful than Chizu's quick slashes, but the attack itself had not been lacking in power. Talent was not the girl's problem, only training and attitude. Offensive aeromancy could not be used by someone with an indecisive mind, as the very nature of wind was flighty and would not listen to the commands of someone who was not in control. He turned his head towards the interloper whose arrival he had sensed earlier, watching as he handed the girl an orb of Materia. Valefor eyed the orb with a frown, before looking up at Ramuh's chosen elemancer. He and Ramuh had an understanding, but that didn't mean that Valefor cared too much for electromancers as a whole. "I don't remember giving you permission to enter," he said. "Chizu may allow you to roam the tower as you wish, but she has no control over this space." Edited by Chizu, Feb 27 2011, 01:49 AM.

S-Sugarcube...? Erin thought, blushing slightly as she took her materia. "Th-thank you..." She held it in her hands, saying, "I probably should have taken a blue one or a green one if I wanted to be stronger, but...I was a bit indecisive at the time..." She realized that she sounded ungrateful, so she quickly added "I-It's fine though, when I give it a try I'm sure I'll be happier with it. Uhm, thank you again, Mr. Ryuko." She finished the sentence with a polite bow. Erin figured she should address Nickle more respectfully, since he was an instructor and her elder, even if he wasn't the wind instructor. She was happy at the very least that she hadn't hit him with the air blast by accident again. She was a bit hesitant towards the materia, staring at her own reflection on the surface of the marble. She had held the purple one before, but she had always just carried it around with her. "Can you...really just put them in your body like that...?" She asked, "I've never tried before..." |

Nickle smirked at Valefor, "Bah, settle down yah multi-coloured crow. There's no reason to get your feathers all ruffled." Nickle knew that he should be treating Valefor with more respect, but he'd come to realise that doing so only placed the wind elemental higher on the perch he'd made for himself. Even Ramuh wasn't this stuck up about things. "Look, just relax for a second Valefor, it's not like I come here specifically all the time. Erin was the last one to get her materia and so I figured I'd hand deliver it." Besides, at least Nickle ahd been polite enough to not interrupt her while she was actually practicing. Nickle then turned his attention to Erin, "Hey hey, don't worry so much about what colour you picked first. You're playing to your strengths. With that materia you can easily sense anyone nearby you and your range for sensing others is extended far beyond what you had before. It's an ideal materia for an aeromancer." She was still uncertain of herself, but that was fine though, she was still growing up. Sure Nickle was only a few years older than her, but that didn't mean those few years made for one hell of a transition. He smiled gently as she nervously examined the materia and asked how it just slipped inside you. Nickle smiled, "It's actually not so hard once you understand the principle." Nickle called forth his yellow fuel and protomateria. It could be seen as two orbs glowing under his skin and sliding down his arm, before slipping out of his skin into the palm of his hand. "All materia is made from ether, a rare susbstance the planet produces naturally. I'm able to harvest it from the Elemancer grounds because of the abundance of life an energy that has gathered here thanks to us and the Aeons." Nickle placed his hand on Erin's head, letting her feel some of the residule ether from the materia, "We all have a bit of ether inside us, we're all born on this earth. It's just that we don't give off a lot of it when we die, or get a lot of it when we're born. But it's all part of the miracle of life." Nickle then removed his hand from her head and let the materia slip slowing into his body again. "Try and feel the materia's own 'beat' and synch it with your heart. Get that right and you and slide it in and out of your body as much as you want." |
