Oliver sighed with a groan as he laid on the couch. How long had he been lounging around like this? It was somewhat depressing to think about. Even with all the distractions the minutes seemed to stretch into hours. The hours into days and days drug on like he couldn't believe. And yet paradoxically time was flying past. It was like he felt each minute slipping past. He exhaled a long low breath before standing and stretching out. There really was no merit to what he was doing. One could even call it little more than moping. The fight was coming whether he was ready for it or not. All that was left was to meet it. At this point it was coming whether he liked it or not. No, perhaps it had been coming since the first day he decided to defect. Perhaps it had been coming since he'd met Jameson? Either way it was coming just the same. And all the choices that had been made until now were impossible to change. But the waiting.. the waiting was the worst of it. He just wanted to get in there and to see how things fell. He could deal with loosing, with dying, or with anything that came. What he couldn't stand was sitting here on his hands doing nothing while it welled up inside. But he couldn't bother anyone with it either. Jameson was probably feeling the same things. And all of what Jameson felt was Oliver's fault for getting him involved. It seemed wrong to drag him further into this by whining about his insecurities. And the one person he wanted to talk to it about wasn't there. "Haaah.." He sighed heavily as he stood, shifting uncomfortably. "What in the world am I doing..?" |

The last few hours before a mission are often called 'the time of greatest doubt.' For many, it was a sober time of reflection and contemplation, when they prepared themselves and checked their internal condition, mentally walking themselves through the tasks they would soon have to perform. Chetri was spending these extra hours performing final checks on the equipment she'd need. The large, heavy rifle she'd gotten for the mission had been checked thoroughly already - she'd inspected it to make sure it worked when she'd gotten it mere days before - there was always a chance something would happen in the meantime, and she'd been trained to be cautious. Nothing was ever guaranteed in combat, and so you worked with what you had to improve your chances, and so every piece of equipment was thoroughly checked and double checked, so that when the time came for their use, they were ready and able to do what you needed them to do. From boots, to ammunition. Despite the odds against them however, she wasn't nervous. It didn't help to worry about things, and stress came on it's own time. There was no need to invite it early, and it would merely sap your strength even while you were idle. No, she'd been trained to accomplish her missions as effectively and efficiently as she could. And, even if she'd left that group, the training didn't simply go away. There didn't seem to be any emotion on that face of hers, as she quietly packed up everything she'd be needing. It would have been almost serene if it wasn't also so cold. |

Oliver yawned a bit as he walked into the kitchen. He reached into the fridge rummaging around a bit. "Hurm... No dice.." He said with a frown. Well it looked like it was the basement fridge then. The basement of the WDA was somewhat strange. Actually until now it was almost like it didn't even exist. But it did exist. Where else did they keep all their gadgets, tack, guns, and so forth? Where indeed. No it was the basement where all of that was and always had been which was impossible to deny by anyone because it was always there. And that it where Oliver was headed. The basement. That had always existed. Oliver stepped out of the elevator before glancing over to Chetri whom was playing with her guns as per usual. There was an entire wall of that shit. guns, target practice equipment, even a small single-person shooting range that had been set up for the training they had all totally been doing this whole time despite what anyone says. He yawned stretching as he walked over to the second fridge and opened it up rummaging around. He took out a small juice box and sighed. "Damn, only mango flavor left.. I hate mango.." He said glumly before popping the straw in. "Stupid Jameson and his stupid soda rules." He glanced towards Chetri before looking away and heading to the rec area where the T.V. and entertainment stuff was. See? This room totally had a bunch of functional uses the building lacked before. This room clearly always existed. He glanced back before sitting down near the table where Chetri was. He sipped his drink and glanced off to the side. Not really striking up conversation but creating an aura around him that very obviously said 'I want to talk about something.' Not that he expected her to pick up on any sort of subtly. |

She down down her handgun on the table, having just finished checking that. "So what's wrong?" she asked Oliver. Just because she had difficulty in being a person, it didn't mean she was a complete blank in these things. She knew well enough when something bothered people. It was a skill that was important enough in getting around. In a business mostly about trust and betrayal, reading people was something your life occassionaly depended on. That said, she still didn't actually stop, and proceeded to check on her knives. |

"....Why do you care?" He said reflexively, not really meaning to snap back with a retort like that. It was sort of an instinct to react negatively if she said anything. It was just so NORMAL. So when he realized he'd sort of WANTED her to butt into this one he was a bit embarrassed, not that he let it show. Still, it was so unexpected for her to willingly take the bait on what was clearly a personal issue. Typically she was isolated off into her own world, not letting anything show. Her pain, happiness, sadness, all of it was buried so deep he doubted even she knew where it was. But then this was probably survival training or something. Maybe she'd taken some classes in psychology, who knows. But he very sincerely doubted it was anything remotely resembling an empathetic feeling. He leaned back in the seat tossing his head back until he was looking at her upside down behind him. "S'not really your thing to play team therapist, right?" He said that and it almost sounded like he expected her to say something kind, but he wasn't stupid. He was more just trying to be difficult. She had picked up on his desire to talk but he'd be damned if he allowed this conversation to begin with her poised as the generous benevolent one, lending him a ear. First he'd have her say something like 'It's common procedure 19902 to pretend to be a human being with a soul in blah blah situation.' Edited by Cypriss, Jan 12 2011, 11:53 AM.

"Because you're tense." she said simply "It's not doing you any good to be that way and you know better." He was right in a way. It wasn't really kindness there. Probably. She herself probably didn't know what it was. What she did know was that in his current state, he wasn't in any condition to do much of anything. Having the physical abilities but being distracted mentally was a sure way for something to go wrong. In a way, it really was survival training kicking in. Except it wasn't necessarily the only reason. |

"Ehh.. I'm tense..?" He said eying her upside down. He frowned a bit before leaning forward with one motion until he stood in front of her, hands on his sides. He exhaled slowly, rubbing his neck and turning to look back at her. "I suppose I'm tense.." He repeated as he looked down. I know better.. huh..? "Well but.. This whole situation is my fault. Or to be more clear None of this would have even happened without me being involved. So it's kind of amazing if I'm not tense with that on my conscience." The whole time his ton was surprisingly even, a smile didn't fade from his lips. His whole expression seemed as if it were the most casual of concerns. He wasn't a good actor but.. He was an excellent liar. All he had to do was train his body to do the opposite of what he wanted to do. To smile when he wanted to cry, to laugh when he wanted to scream, or to cheerfully joke about something that sincerely bothered him. Or to.. snap at someone when you were glad they started the conversation. |

"Tension saps strength even when your muscles are idle. Stress will come on it's own time, you don't need to invite it early." she told him. It was a maxim she'd heard from her first instructor. The person who eventually became her first handler. "Just think about what you have to do, and how to handle it. The rest can wait." It was hardly therapy, but it was also true. As far as she was concerned, it was just moving out again, and treated it as yet another part of the routine, just like a training mission. She knew and understood what the objective was, and knew how to handle it, every step of the way. That was that. Oliver should have been doing the same, and she knew it. All she could do was remind him of that fact. Whatever the consequences of what would happen would be, it wasn't doing him any good worrying. And so the defence against that was simply to simply shut down, and prepare yourself. Think first of the mission. When the unexpected happens, return to the mission. And when all else failed, remember the mission. Worrying about anything else wasn't going to do him any good. |

"Heh. You really are a cold bitch." He said eying her with e level expression. He couldn't even believe how cold that logic was. He understood she was from such strange circumstances but he still couldn't forgive how dismissive she was. He exhaled slowly, massaging his shoulder. "Even if you tell me it like that I won't be put at ease by your words.. What you're describing is me separating from my emotions, maybe for you that's easy but for us it's not! If I could I already would have!" He snapped before drawing in a breath. He needed to calm down. Wait, wasn't that the problem?! He couldn't calm down. A tense wire snapped when you applied pressure to it. That was because it was already drawn to it's limits.. All a tense wire could do was snap! That's what he felt like doing, right now. He'd been taught about staying calm. He'd been taught it but the main lesson was remaining detached in the first place. But all that was out the window now! All he had left were a bunch of words that all seemed so stupid in the face of actually putting them to use. How to remain calm, as if it were that simple. He felt a twinge of guilt over throwing her own lack of emotion in her face. The memory of her with the gun still fresh.. He hesitated a moment before groaning. "Nevermind.. I already understand you're in the unique position of not understanding my problem. I'm sorry to have bothered you.." |

"...Would you rather be useless for when the time comes and let everyone die because you were stressed beforehand?" she asked him It wasn't a matter of what he should do, as much as what he had to do. If he couldn't calm down, then he was in no condition to fight. If he wasn't in a condition to fight, then it was better off for him to stay behind. She'd finished with her checks, and calmly sat down, and appeared to rest and do nothing. Because that was exactly what the best did in times like this. "Worrying does nothing to help. There's nothing more I can say. Else, I will talk to Jameson to have you remain behind because you will not be in a condition to do anything when it is time to go." It was simple, cold, and unfeeling logic. But it was also the truth. And one didn't trust people who were suffering heavily from fatigue as their first choice when it came to these things unless they absolutely had nothing better. |

"Yeah yeah I already get it.." Oliver said leaning against the wall as he contemplated leaving. "I already understand that it's useless to be so nervous." He said with a frown. But that was just IT. He couldn't control it. He tried thinking over the methods he'd used before. Focusing on the mission, remaining calm, focusing on other things, and even tactics such as distancing himself. None of this really worked for him. He was still feeling far more nervous than he should. His gut was clenched and he felt almost sick. He knew exactly why. But even knowing didn't help him much in this one. He sighed heavily and leaned forward once more. "But even if you tell him that it won't change anything. He won't not bring me. I won't allow it." He released a breath as he looked back to her with the same distant look as usual. "I mean it's only natural right? None of us are trained military. We're regular people. You think Jameson isn't nervous? Aki? Seth? We're all scared. You're the only one with their wits in the right place.. I guess it's an advantage of the cold disposition." He shrugged his shoulders. "Perhaps when I arrived I was more like you. Perhaps if this case weren't all my fault I'd be calmer. But because it's this case.. I just can't calm myself.." She opened her eyes again for a moment, and looked at Oliver's state. "I'm not telling you not to be scared. I'm telling you not to let it control you. Calm down, do the mission, and return with everyone. That's the ending you want right?" she questioned him. Her eyes remained fixed upon him, adding to it. It was a simple matter. Not everything in life was clear cut and neatly defined, but sometimes, they really were. "If that's the case, then get some rest. You'll need strength to protect them. Fatigue is our enemy. Do not let it gain an advantage." |

Oliver eyed her for a moment, quirking an eyebrow towards her as she spoke. He paused, hesitating a moment before releasing a breath and laughing a bit to himself. "Man, you're really scary.. The guys who trained you weren't kidding around." He said to himself mostly as he rubbed his forehead. Even if he said so though, it was good advice. Or rather they were the words he really needed to hear at that moment. He felt something like a release, like the thread had snapped, or maybe it mended? Either way he felt a bit of the weight on his mind release. More than the stress from being stressed he'd be too conscious of the fact he was scared. That was the real issue. He'd felt like there was something wrong with that. Before he'd never been afraid but maybe it was because there weren't any stakes? Success meant a new battlefield but continued opportunities to live. Loss meant an end to his chances at living but also an end to the struggle. Either option was met with equal apathy. "Perhaps in a different life you could have been a drill sergeant or a recruiter.. Theres no way I can imagine you not involved with troops though..." He said with a half grin. He tilted his head to the side a bit pursing his lips. "you'd probably look good in uniform too..." He said to himself, trying to picture it. "Or rather it would suit you?" "I wouldn't know" she admitted "But I think, in a different life, I wouldn't be myself." It was another way of saying she wouldn't be born. The way people were was shaped by what happened. Even given the exact same origin, things would diverge eventually. Between that, she wasn't sure how people would consider the same thing to be the same existance really. At best, they would be similar, but never the same. |

"Oi oi, it's an expression. A turn of phrase.. Are you sensitive to that sort of thing or something?" He said, somewhat surprised by the serious manner in which she replied. Not just because it was serious, he couldn't imagine her ever replying to anything in a non-serious way, but because she was taking the premise of it seriously. Well, he should know better than to attempt to joke with this one anyhow. Even if she had a good moment a polished turd was still a turd. He rolled his eyes dismissively before walking to the fridge once more and rummaging through it. "When I said i'd nearly done the same thing that time.. I was serious." He said, referencing their conversation back in the bathroom before. "At that time I wasn't just relating to you in order to 'talk you down'. I really meant it." He took his drink and leaned back against the counter. "Of course my handlers never broke me like they did you. I had all of my emotions in tact and my memories of family.. So I had a lot more to prevent me from pulling the trigger. Even so I held a loaded gun not just one with no bullets.." He smirked leaning back. "It seems somehow you're the more successful attempt at a soldier.." |
