Chizu found herself spending a lot more time in the suburban district.

She tugged on her scarf as she walked down the street, loosening it slightly. Her eyes drifted to her cellphone, but there were no new messages or calls. After being gone twelve years, it really was no surprise to her that her father was having a hard time with things like texting, but he had adapted pretty quickly. Like her, though, he hadn't called unless it was absolutely necessary.

It may have only felt like one year to him, but she guessed that he was having a hard time dealing with the fact that the child he knew was dead, and the child he didn't know was all grown up. Just like it was hard to deal with the fact that she was a living person's daughter. That she had forgiven her sister's murderer, even shaking his hand before he left. That she was capable of doing what she had done to save her father. And that after spending years wondering what he was like, she didn't know how to talk to him now that she knew.

Aether said that the two of them were overly similar. Which, of course, had her rolling her eyes at her elemental adviser as she walked out the door this morning. Even so, she felt...lighter. Was that what forgiving someone did?

She paused, glancing at the sign that advertised the Willicott Detective Agency. She had passed this place many times during her walks--or runs--home, but usually by the time she even came out here it was late enough that she expected the place would be closed. And she had never really wanted to talk to Jameson anyway. But it had been a while, she hadn't even said anything after finding out he wasn't dead, despite the fact that she did react strongly to his death.

It had been...a very long while.

She sighed and ran a hand through her hair, wondering what she was getting into as she walked over to the door, knocked, and opened it.

"Hah... Welcome.." Jameson said standing at the coffee pot. "To the WDA, where crime meets punishment!" He said turning and walking over to a couch near a small chair and a coffee table. He put two coffees down. Bitter, strong, and black. Next to hers were two cremes and a pair of sugar cubes should she want them. He plopped down in the chair tipping his hat forward with a grin.

"Didn't expect you to wander in, Chizu.. Personal or Professional visit?" He said cheerfully. He'd felt her approaching outside. Once he knew a person's mental 'signature' it was easy enough for him to keep track of whom was coming and going. Which is exactly why when she wandered in he was already up and preparing for her.

The real mystery was why? Chizu had always been a peripheral character in Jameson's life. Every so often their paths cross along similar routes. But mostly they led disconnected lives and had adventures all their own that barely overlapped. It was mainly only in matters pertaining to the school that they ever even managed to interact at all. And it was for this reason he was surprised to see her.

Not only this but she was strong and indispendant, and she'd known Jameson mostly back when he had first arrived. At that time Chizu had been fiercely antisocial and Jameson had been a hyperactive idiot and so one could say they had most certainly gotten off on the wrong her. Her involvement in the machinations of Kinclex and a certain gang war hadn't helped her curry favor with him. And his strong opposition to them had not endeared him to her.

Despite the vast changes both had gone through these initial impressions of people neither of them were any longer still dictated out they treated each other.. He doubted there were many issues she would entrust to him. Such was the way of things. And so it was that the world's number one super sleuth was clueless as to why she'd come.

"Personal," replied Chizu, sitting down on the couch and picking up one of the sugar cubes. She plopped it into her coffee. She wasn't honestly surprised that he knew she was coming. Jameson had been a good empath back when she was a stupid freshman. She didn't need to have talked to him recently to guess that he had improved. A lot--based on the things she knew from Arcadia. He was definitely not the same kid that had gotten hit by Tsukasa-sensei right before a mission. Then again, she wasn't the same kid that she had been either.

"I was in the area and I realized it's been a while," she said. "Plus I never dropped by once it turned out you weren't dead." Chizu shrugged, stirring one of the cremes into her cup before taking as sip. "Better late than never, right?" she asked with a small grin.

Things had been a little chaotic for her over the past few weeks, which was probably why she was deciding to stop by now. The whole incident with the festival and Tsukasa-sensei was pretty much public knowledge, as was her relationship with Nickle. She was still dealing with all the exaggerations some of the students were making about what had happened then, although considering what happened at the festival after all of that, she was almost glad that she left.

Almost. Because it would have been very nice to throw the people responsible from the nearest tall building.

Those events had been followed almost immediately by the threat to Arcadia, the battle against Wo Shing and Rozanny's death, Kaito's return, and their little rescue mission. All of that coupled with her work in the Elemancer Castle meant that Chizu always had at least three things on her mind recently. Jameson would probably be able to sense it, even though on the outside it looked like she was calmly sipping her coffee.

"How've you been?" she asked.

"Busy." Jameson said with a small smile with an even tone, not really visually responding to what she was saying. He picked up his coffee, straight black, and took a sip leaning back in his chair with a cheerful expression. In truth he was really confused by this visit. Personal? What in the world was she here for? He couldn't really understand. Either way he wasn't going to kick her out or anything like that. There were things you could and couldn't do, and that definitely crossed the line.

Jameson set his cup down before leaning forward and standing. "A while eh...?" He said turning his back to her as he walked over to his hat rack. He tipped his fedora off the top of his head, hanging it on one of the hooks. "I you count the last time we saw each other then it's just the last time we had class..." He said idly, "But if you count the last time we talked in any real way..."

He smirked a bit turning back to her with a laugh. "Then, yeah. It's been a while." He said placing one hand on his side and using the other to sheepishly rub his neck.

Comparing his history with Chizu to his history with most of the other long time members of the school then it was almost amazing how little they'd interacted. He turned and leaned against the wall with a grin. "I didn't know you to be nostalgic.." Jameson said locking his gaze onto her. "And I haven't really known you to try and escape reality either.."

He trailed off looking away. "I wonder if this isn't you trying to take a break from your responsibilities in the fantasy land of your imagined youth..."

Chizu blinked in surprise at Jameson's statement, her fingers curling around the cup of coffee. The mug was warm beneath her fingertips. It was a welcome change from the cold outside. Maybe one of the biggest signs that Chizu had changed was that she did not immediately jump up and deny what Jameson was saying, even though the urge to do that still ran through her. She didn't get angry either, at least not outwardly. Instead, she considered it.

Was that what she was doing?

"Alright, you caught me," she said with a faint smile. She shook her head, and took another sip. "...I have to see Kaito off later this afternoon. He came back, by the way." Kaito had, briefly and while he was still pretending to be nice, been a member of one of Jameson's little detective clubs back in the day. She remembered that much. She didn't need to explain who he was, although Jameson probably didn't know what he had done to her.

"...He was that guy that I told you I wanted to find and kill, back at the hotel."

"hurm..?" Jameson said quirking an eyebrow. As far as he knew Kaito had been perfectly congenial. Jameson had known him to be the sort whose face didn't match his actual emotions but that was true of a lot of people. So he'd turned out to be someone bad? He hadn't expected that. But then Jameson was an empath, not a mind reader. He could only sort the feelings of others out. But without a large set of data that ability rarely provided him a clear picture of a person.

Still, he could fairly well piece together what the general idea was fro that. "That must have been hard." He inferred from her emotional fatigue and repressed pain. He took his coffee with him as he stepped away from the table. His eyes roved over the wall as he exhaled. "I'm assuming since you're here and not in jail he's still alive. And I'm assuming since he's alive he didn't manage to harm anyone close to you.. recently.."

He turned back. "So then, you beat the guy you wanted to beat for so long. And now you're here... I wonder what you could possibly want from me?" He folded his arms and frowned. "If it were condolence you'd go to that hotheaded boyfriend of yours. If it was just talking then I'm sure Damon would do. But you picked me specifically.." He trailed off.

"Well go ahead then. Talk about it if that's what you want. I've some free time and I'm always game for a story."

Chizu frowned at Jameson's words. "I never really did say how that turned out..." she said. She had almost forgotten that most people didn't know about what Kaito had done in the past, just because everyone close to her did. "...I came really close to killing him," she said, setting her cup down on the table. "He nearly killed Coryn. He was possessed at the time and wasn't doing it of his own will, but I still blamed him for that. It's because of that that Coryn was sent home, and..."

She waved her hand in the air dismissively. The heartless incident had happened then. She found Damon and Kaede turned out to be safe after all, but Coryn...She had to accept that he was gone. It still hurt. Because in the end, she had failed to protect him. If he hadn't been injured, he would have been in Hyakuji, where he might have made it. And he would have been at his peak. "...If he were here, maybe he would have made it out...But that's in the past, I guess..."

"I fought Kaito back then after he attacked Coryn, but I couldn't do it. I let him go. I still hated him, though, even after he left. That was over a year ago." She took a sip of coffee. "...Some things happened. He came back. And...I forgave him yesterday. So I guessed I should just let you know that you were right...what you said to me back then, about what I was doing for revenge."

She thought back to that day at the hotel in America. If she looked at the person she had been then and the person she was now, there was almost no comparison. She wondered what would have happened if she had never turned away from that path. "...I never said anything, but I did listen to what you said back then. So...thanks for snapping me out of it. Figured you might want to know the end of the story."

Jameson sighed as he walked over to his chair. "Honestly that's pretty amazing.." He was mentally filling in blanks and piecing together the larger story as well as reconciling it to what he already knew. This was quite a lot of information all at once. But he was just getting through it as best he could.

"After all that you still let him go, that's pretty amazing.." He said taking a sip of coffee as he watched her. He didn't feel any indicators that might point to this being a lie but it was almost beyond belief to think that after all that she'd still let the guy go. He'd taken her sister and her ex-fiance and she still let him off? That was amazing. He wasn't sure if even he'd be so forgiving...

Jameson took the cup and set it down. "It's not like I really did all that much. Words don't have any effect unless the recipient is willing to receive them. If what I said had any impact it's because you already knew, deep down, what I was saying was what you felt. I'm glad I could be there at that time but the one whom deserves praise here is you. You're the one whom made the right choices.."

He exhaled a long breath as he looked down. "Back then my one-sided morality caused a lot of people trouble. And it hurt others. My refusal to bend sent people down the wrong path that I could have saved. I wasn't capable of protecting or guiding anyone back then. I kept loosing my friends to Wo Shing or Kyrios. And once they fell to that side there seemed to be no hope for them. I wasn't able to help even one person see the light." He paused, turning to look towards the door that lead up to the bedrooms where Chetri and Oliver slept. "Maybe I'm still not."

"But I'm glad at least one person wasn't injured by what I said. If you found your way back it wasn't me whom showed you the path. It was you." People he'd tried to save.. Danny, Katase, Razu, and Kurai.. They all just fell deeper and died. Back then he didn't have the qualifications to be a person whom influenced others.

"...It wasn't easy," said Chizu when Jameson expressed surprise that she let him go. She thought back to the way Kaito had been the day she told him to leave Hyakuji and get out of her sight. Standing there with a knife in his hand, practically begging her to kill him. It unsettled her even then. "When he left for the first time, he gave me the opportunity to kill him. I wanted to. I probably would have. But...then I looked up and saw that he wanted to die."

After that, she couldn't do it. It was one thing to kill somebody who was trying to kill you. It was another thing entirely to kill somebody that would let you do it, if he thought that was the only way to make up for what he did. "He killed my sister for revenge. If I had killed him, I would have been the same. And I think the things he did killed him a little...if that makes sense." She shrugged, her mind going back to the battle against Wo Shing, the night Roz died. The look in her eyes...

Rozanny and Kaito. Two people that she might have been, if it hadn't been for everyone she met along the way. And...she realized, from what Jameson was saying...if it hadn't been for herself. Maybe after years of putting herself down, she needed to give herself a little credit here.

"...They're not words you just throw around, are they? Fighting and killing. I know that now. I guess when he came back and told me he found out something about my father...I just needed to let it go."

She looked up, smiling slightly. "Oh, by the way, it turns out I'm not an orphan. So...after all that...go figure."

"Once upon a time a very smart person told me this.. It's advice I pass onto all of the kids in my care."

"Never ever misjudge the value of a life. With no regard to the humility of one existence, and no regard to its age, weigh all lives evenly, even when putting one beloved life, and the countless number of perfect strangers, on the left and right of the scale, you must be able to value it impartially, and impartially forfeit it."

He held a finger to the sky and stared up as he spoke the words. Remembering his fight with Danny. The serious way he had attacked him, intending to kill him. His own best friend. "I think that logic works in reverse to. We have to weight all lives evenly. So killing someone is something we can't take lightly.." He paused and frowned deeply while looking down.

"A life has endless possibilities. Where Kaito goes now we can't know for sure. He may fall back into old habits and you'll wind up fighting him. But perhaps he will do some small good in this world. And the good he does will grow and change someone. If we crush the possibility for someone to hurt us again by killing them we also crush the chance of saving them. Of them saving themselves."

He grinned towards Chizu. "You figured that out on your own in your heart. It seems when I wasn't looking you fully matured into a good adult." He planted one hand on his side flicking his nose with his thumb displaying a toothy grin. "No wonder you're my rival!"
