Of all the stupid things that had to happen! Star rushed into her dorm room, practically throwing the door open from the hallway. It was empty, but of course it would be. Jen and Fuu were in the cafeteria, waiting for her. In fact, she wouldn't be surprised if one of them had seen her mad dash from the hallway, her eyes wide in panic as she nearly slipped on the steps outside, rushing towards Fudo House. She had taken the stairs at a run, not even bothering with the elevator to the fourth floor. She ran into the kitchen, breathing hard with panic as she finally let go of the thing that was clenched in her right hand. Her mother's crucifix clattered onto the table, the silver figure of Jesus looking sorrowfully up at her. Beside it dropped a broken silver chain, curling into itself. She had been toying it on the way to lunch, the way she usually did, when she felt the chain snap. It was a small chain, but she felt like it's breaking had snapped something inside of her as well. She placed her hand on the table and leaned forward, closing her eyes and taking a deep ragged breath as she placed one hand over her head. Thump thump thump went the power inside her, rushing through her veins, filling her, threatening to break free. A gold glow shimmered just over her skin, tiny flecks of gold appearing in her eyes. Spare chain. She had a spare chain in her bedroom. She straightened up and started heading towards the room she shared with Jen.

"Hold a moment there, Fuu-chan," Like a squad leader in a military special operations team Jen calmly held up her right hand in front of Fuu who was seated across the table. The two girls had reached the cafeteria ahead of Star, their roommate at Room 420 of Fudo dorms. They'd originally planned to meet together at the cafeteria for lunch. (And for Jen it wasn't such a bad idea because the one at Hyakuji as clearly a few steps up from the stuff they served at AHS' Soylent Cafeteria. But hey, you can't complain about free stuff) The plan was simple - arrive at the cafeteria, and secure a table before the place got crowded. And since Jen and Fuu arrived ahead of Star the gameplan was to have Fuu secure a table, wait for Star to arrive, and then Jen will order for the three of them. Except that Star hasn't arrived. Funny, shouldn't she be on her way already? "If I'm not back within 20 minutes, just proceed at your own timing," Jen told the country lass as she headed out of the cafeteria and into the hallway. And that was when she saw her. Long blond hair? Check. Fashionably modified school uniform? Check. Like a golden comet Star was racing down the hallway, right past the cafeteria - it was clear that something wasn't right. Acting on cue, the amethyst-haired girl took off in pursuit of the golden-haired one, but Star had managed to gain a considerable head start over Jen, who despite being more athletic realized she'd be hard-pressed to catch up to her friend. "Coming through!" Jen shouted, not bothering to negotiate her way around people and objects, instead going over or under them like a traceur as Jen put those Parkour videos she'd watched into use, vaulting over students who stood in her way, dashing along the sides of the walls when objects get in the way, generally wasting no time in making detours. The door was already open when Jen reached their dorm, just as the purple-haired girl caught sight of Star entering the kitchen. Catching a few breaths, Jen slowed down to a walk as she entered the main room, loosening her collar after all that running and acrobatics. "Star, what's going on? Why are you running around like that?" Jen asked as she followed Star into their bedroom, reaching out with her right hand to rest her hand on Star's shoulders, although under the relative dimness of the room thanks to the drawn curtains Jen noticed a gold aura shimmering on Star's body. "Oh nein, könnte es sein..." the lavender-haired girl gasped under her breath in German, recalling the abnormal condition she once observed Star undergoing back during the treasure hunt. Could it be another relapse? But first things, she hoped that Star was coherent enough to tell her what was going on, because Jen wasn't getting a good feeling about it at all! |

Star's fingers closed around the drawer of her bedside table and she practically yanked it out all the way in her panic. She stiffened as she felt a hand land on her shoulder and she twisted around, the contents of the drawer spilling onto the ground as she turned towards Jen. Her eyes widened as she stared at her roommate. The gold flecks in her eyes didn't make up the majority, but they seemed to glow in the dark, making them more noticeable. "Jen!" said Star in surprise. She took a deep breath, her shoulders slumping. She wouldn't be able to keep it a secret after this. She'd have to tell Jen something. "I'm fine! I--!" Star recoiled suddenly, letting out a grunt of pain as her head suddenly throbbed painfully. It was a quick stabbing pain, and it was gone almost the moment it came, but that told Star one thing. She was running out of time. She shook her head, breathing quickly through clenched teeth as she dropped to her knees and began rifling through the things on the floor. They were typical Star things--a watercolor set, a sewing kit, an astronomy book, several hair decorations, one hard bound Bible with gold lettering on the front, a jewelry box... Star snatched up the last one, opening it and dumping all the contents out onto her bed. She pushed through the assortment of brightly colored odds and ends, her fingers brushing against a silver chain. She jumped up, holding it in her hand and heading out of the bedroom.

One thing about Jen was that if she was frightened, she was never one to show her fear, believing herself to be someone who is in control at all times, but with the way Star was frantically searching her room, it was beginning to get to Jen. "I'm fine! I--!" the blond photomancer tried to respond, only to get cut off by a grunt of pain, recoiling from the shock. "Star, I want to know what's going on..." Jen asked, her voice heavy with concern and worry for her friend as Star began rifling through her belongings, stopping at a jewelry box before proceeding to empty out it contents onto her bed, sifting through the array of brightly-colored costume jewelry and accessories before retrieving a silver chain. "I want to help, but I can't if you keep the truth from me," Jen continued as she followed Star out of the bedroom. Something was clearly not right with her friend - while she had little idea on how photomancy works, from her knowledge in medicine the purple-haired girl knew that feeling pain clearly meant something was not normal inside one's body. |

Star grit her teeth, the chain in her hands falling onto the kitchen table with a clatter as Jen followed her out. Some of her blond hair fell over her face, covering one of her eyes and hiding it from view as she placed her hands on the table. She forced herself to take a deep breath as the golden light around her flared, trying to calm down. Panicking wouldn't do her much good. She still had some time left. Run. Hide. Attack. Run. Shut up! She took a deep breath, bracing herself on the table as the light flared up before suddenly drawing itself back into her and leaving a shorter more manageable aura in its wake. She opened her eyes, fumbling with the crucifix as she tried to slip the spare chain into the small hole at the top. She hoped Helios had used his head and not placed the seal on the chain. She turned her head towards Jen as the chain slipped back inside, her shoulders slumping in defeat. Star reached up, pulling her hair back to reveal her right eye. Just over half of it was golden now, the violet clinging to the left side of her eye. Looking at Jen, Star saw both her and the light around her. She could see the colors and the way light bended, and she had to take a deep breath to make sure that in her mind she was seeing Jen and not just a gathering of colors. She still remembered Shinya that day when she lost control, remembered how everything around her had simply been light or fuel for light... "...I'm not human, Jen," she said. "Not completely. Only three-fourths. The rest is light elemental." She sighed, guilt making its way into her face as she let her hair fall, busying herself with fixing the clasp.

"Mein gott..." Jen gasped as she caught sight of Star's right eye after the photomancer uncovered it - slightly more than half of her violet pupil had turned golden, and judging from Star's expression it appeared to be a painful process and something she was trying to keep contained. While Jen didn't know what exactly was Star's condition, the purple-haired girl made an informed deduction that it was probably an issue with keeping her powers under control. "...I'm not human, Jen," Came the photomancer's uneasy reply. "Not completely. Only three-fourths. The rest is light elemental." Star sighed as she continued her attempt to repair the clasp on the chain, guilt written on her face. Well, that explains the origins of her friend's abilities as a photomancer, and while granting her powers over light, it appeared that her power also came at a price. "Thanks for telling me, it must've been hard for you to say that," Jen replied as she read Star's expression, before glancing at the chain she was trying to fix. "Let me help you with that, it's the least I can do to help, for starters... I mean, that's where my expertise lies," Jen nodded earnestly, still eying the silver chain while placing a hand forward in a gesture for Star to pass her the chain, confident that her expertise in fixing devices and widgets would make this one a piece of cake. "... I guess the part of you that's a light elemental isn't particularly kind to the part of you that's human?" Jen queried. She had no idea how a half-human hybrid, or more specifically a quarter elemental would function, but it would be a good start to know what kind of ailments her friend would find herself beset with, and more importantly, what could be done? |

Star gave Jen a pained smile as she passed the clasp over to her roommate. "You can say that..." she said, grimacing as another wave of power suddenly rushed through her, bringing a quick burst of pain in its wake. She took in a sharp breath, bracing herself on the table to keep her balance. The pain receded, the aura of light around her flaring and retreating again. Star sat in the nearest seat, holding her head in her hands for a moment. She looked up at Jen once she was sure that she wasn't going to have an epic meltdown yet. "Part-elementals tend to be powerful elemancers, but they aren't stable..." she said. "The higher the concentration of elemental blood, the less stable they are. Half-elementals don't usually survive to adulthood, apparently." She spoke as if she was reciting facts from a book, sounding almost detached about the whole situation, but Star put her focus in the words. They kept her sane a moment longer. "My mother survived because of this," she said, pointing at the crucifix on the table. "My grandmother used it to seal her photomancy when she was an infant. But apparently...my mother never used photomancy because of its effect on her. She was always weak. So that's why she died..." She didn't need to say that her mother had died in childbirth. Jen already knew that part of her history. |

"Hmm... no biggie here," Jen said as Star passed her the chain, getting to work straight away as she spent a couple of seconds scrutinizing the accessory. It was nothing she hadn't fixed before, and with that in mind the lilac-haired girl quickly fixed the clasp on the chain, testing it a bit to make sure it was sturdy and finding it to her satisfaction, returned it to Star just as the blond girl grimaced in pain while the aura of light surrounding her ebbing and flaring up a little. "Here you go, Star," Jen commented, proud of her handiwork. "You can say that..." Star replied. "Part-elementals tend to be powerful elemancers, but they aren't stable..." Jen nodded as Star went through a bit of explanation on the nature of her condition as a partial elemental. "The higher the concentration of elemental blood, the less stable they are. Half-elementals don't usually survive to adulthood, apparently." Jen looked at Star with a worried expression - now that was something she wouldn't wish onto anyone, especially not someone like Star. Yet at the same time, she wasn't entirely surprised to hear that half-elementals are unstable. Considering how one part is flesh and blood, and the other is a being of supernatural energy. To the best of her knowledge, a union between two fundamentally beings like this would essentially be like dropping a piece of sodium metal into a flask of hydrochloric acid. "My mother survived because of this," Jen's gaze wandered to the crucifix that lay on the table. "My grandmother used it to seal her photomancy when she was an infant. But apparently...my mother never used photomancy because of its effect on her. She was always weak. So that's why she died..." "That's awful to hear," Jen's expression scrunched up - to constantly live in fear of one's own power. Star was truly a case of being cursed with awesome - possessing great powers of photomancy at her disposal - Jen was certain that what she'd seen Star perform thus far was merely the tip of the iceberg, now that she mentioned the potential possessed by half-elementals, yet living in fear of their elemental side taking over and in the process consuming them. "But your courage is commendable, Star - even knowing all of this you never failed to keep your smile and to live out your life the way you wanted it," Jen commented; it was reminiscent of one who was diagnosed with a terminal illness, yet never lost their hope and their lust for life - and in fact, knowing that their days are numbered sought to live their life to its fullest. Yet, at the same time Jen didn't want to accept that being a quarter-elemental was akin to a terminal illness; surely, there was some way that Star could get her elemental side under control, and lead a normal happy life without the fear of a superpower meltdown if no control systems were in place! If only she knew more... Edited by Lawman, Jan 1 2011, 12:44 AM.

Star accepted the chain from Jen, her smile growing slightly bitter at her best friend's words. Courage? Yeah, right. All she really did was hide. Well, she was going to change that. It was her New Year's resolution, and she had already started on that last night during the incident with Wo Shing. She shook her head, her hands shaking slightly from the difficulty of holding her powers in as she slipped the crucifix back on the chain. "Helios--my elemental grandfather--showed up when I was born," she explained. "He sealed my powers. It was supposed to weaken overtime so that I'd start manifesting photomancy at around twelve years old, when I was old enough to learn how to control it. Didn't work. I started at nine. But Hel hung around to continue powering the seal even when I entered high school. I didn't know this then, and then...well, the Heartless incident. I got pulled out of my world with Meglumar. Hel didn't come with me." She stared at the table, holding the necklace in her hands as she thought back to what had happened on the tower, and in Shinya. "I found out because I kept fainting, and Damon figured out what was going on." She didn't mention that it was in the Arcadia building, because Jen wasn't a member of Arcadia. That was yet another secret she had to keep from her friend. "If I keep this necklace on, I'll be fine," she said. "And if I learn to control it, I'll be okay." She held the necklace in her hands, holding it up. Star swallowed, her mouth dry. There was a reason why she kept talking. She really wasn't looking forward to putting the necklace back on after her elemental side had been leaking out of her for so long. Sure, it was better than the alternative, but that didn't make it less unpleasant. She took a deep breath. "Here goes nothing," she said, placing it over her neck. There was a flash of light and Star clenched her teeth, letting out a muffled groan of pain as she closed her eyes and slumped forward onto the table. Her skin felt like it was on fire for a moment, the light rushing inside her as her power was sealed again. Something inside her protested, and for a split second, her body felt like it was being torn in two. Then it was gone. Star exhaled through her teeth, opening her eyes and placing a hand on her head. Her eyes were violet again, all traces of gold gone. |

"Helios--my elemental grandfather--showed up when I was born," Star explained as she took back the repaired chain from Jen, slipping the crucifix back onto the chain, her hands shaking slightly - no doubt as a result of fighting back against her uncontrollable elemental side. Hel didn't come with me." Jen nodded as Star related her story, so as an added insurance her grandfather, a light elemental, had cast seals on her since her birth. In some ways this brought a ray of hope in Jen as Star mentioned how the seals would weaken over time - had Helios not stayed around to continue powering it well into her high school years. This probably meant that compared to her mother, Star actually stood a chance of leading a normal life. "I found out because I kept fainting, and Damon figured out what was going on." Jen frowned slightly - so all this while no one told her about her extraordinary origins, even though perhaps, just perhaps, if she knew all this earlier she could find ways and means to deal with it? It was just so... tragic. "If I keep this necklace on, I'll be fine, and if I learn to control it, I'll be okay." she said, as Jen's eyes wandered once more to the necklace. So that was what it is - Helios placed a seal over her photomancy to keep her abilities from melting down all the while since her birth until the Heartless incident, and her mother's necklace was probably a fail safe - a last resort should the seals fail before Star mastered her photomancy, which from the looks of it, was her ticket to being able to lead a normal life. For a while Star held the necklace without putting it on, looking on with no small amount of consternation. "Here goes nothing," Star said as she took a deep breath to brace herself, before putting the necklace around her neck. Jen squinted at the flash of light that followed, almost feeling the pain Star felt as she stifled a cry of pain and slumped forward - it must have been pretty agonizing to live like that, and from her perspective it was like a person suffering from late stages of kidney failure who needed regular dialysis treatment to stay alive, or a diabetic in need of regular shots of insulin. For now though, Star was back to normal - pretty worn out from the ordeal, but otherwise normal as her eyes returned to their normal violet hue. And that was when it struck Jen. That eureka moment, as a LED array lit up inside her mind. (No incandescent bulbs for Jen - they are more expensive, and less energy efficient! LED arrays provide the same amount of luminescence for less energy and have longer lives!) "You know Star, the way I see it, your current condition is actually somewhat akin to an autoimmune response," Jen chimed in after letting Star take a while to settle down. "Not to go into a lengthy medical lecture, but you know autoimmunity is a condition in which a body fails to recognize its own constituents and has its immune system attack its own members." Medical research has proven that even a healthy person will possess some amount of autoimmunity - which is apparently vital in the prevention of cancers, as an autoimmune response would prompt the body's defense mechanisms to attack cancerous cells. Of course, a high level of autoimmunity would lead to what are commonly referred to as autoimmune diseases, which can be fatal if not kept in check - just like Star's current situation. Most autoimmune diseases can't be treated, only kept in check, but Jen was certain that Star's was treatable. "I may not know about elemancy, but I think what I know about medical science might help," the lilac-haired girl began as she reached across the table to rest her hand on her blond-haired friend's hands, holding onto it reassuringly. "If my conjecture is true, your elemental side might be attacking your human side due to its failure to recognize it as being one and the same... and considering that you mentioned about how your mother was weak of body due to being a half-elemental..." Jen paused slightly as she furrowed a brow in deep thought, before continuing. "I regret not being able to teach you in regards to photomancy, but perhaps... if you can train your body, the side of you that's human, you can harden up your physical constitution. I dunno how much help that will be when it comes to helping you master control over your powers... but at the very least a hardened constitution should make the next attack less painful; the discipline and willpower involved in the training of course helps - there's a reason why athletes and soldiers often say a strong body comes with a strong will." Jen looked at Star hopefully, wondering how she might think of her proposed solution. With no supernatural abilities of her own, and yet she's managed to figure out a possible solution using science. Jen positively glowed on the inside. Ain't she a genius? |

Star shook her head, trying to get rid of the brief dizzy spell that she was starting to learn followed such attempts. Her body felt weak, and her arms and legs felt oddly boneless, like they had somehow been replaced by giant noodles during her transformation. Her stomach rumbled, impolitely reminding her of her lack of lunch even while her head spun. She moved her fingers slightly as Jen spoke, trying to get the light around her fingers to follow her movements. The result only sent a throbbing sensation through her skull, an unpleasant shiver running through her body for a moment. She couldn't really describe how it felt. It was like being feverish and having someone dump cold water on you for a moment. Of course, she hadn't actually expected it to work. She didn't really understand it much herself, but she thought that her body, in quickly replacing its usual protections against her elemental side, got a little overexcited and sucked up all her powers, including the limited pool of elemancy that she could actually control. It was as if she had been on her way to becoming fully elemental, and now that the crisis had passed, as a countermeasure she was now fully human. She forced herself to focus on what Jen was saying, cutting through the syrupy slowness of her own thoughts and forcing her mind to work even when her body felt slow and sluggish. Autoimmunity. Her eyes widened slightly at Jen's explanation, a spark of understanding appearing on her face. "I've never really thought about it like that before," she admitted. "I guess when you're dealing with something not normal, you don't think of it that way." But it made sense. There was something else, something Helios had mentioned to her, and something she sensed as well, when she was close to giving into it. "I felt it once or twice, when I got really close," she said. "And during the heartless incident when that side actually took over. It's...it's like I'm aware that I'm quarter-elemental, but my elemental side isn't aware that it's three-fourths human." She paused, gesturing at herself. "...It sees my--our?--body as a barrier that's stopping it from manifesting as an elemental. I think it recognizes my mind as a part of itself, because it gets really mad when I try to stop it from taking over, and can't understand why I'd care. It doesn't get that this is its body too and if it destroys it then it--we--I--well, it dies." She frowned. "All this time, I've been focusing on my photomancy," she said. "I figured, if I get good enough at photomancy, I can take control of it and maybe make it see reason. Then...I don't know...maybe if we both understand then we can just be one person, if that makes any sense. But I've never thought about it your way." Star smiled. "It might work," she said. "And I'll try anything once." Photomancy was still required for her to be able to control her elemental side. But having a stronger body might make it more difficult for her elemental side to control her. |

Jen heaved a sigh of relief as the crisis was averted... for now anyway. But it was far from being a painless process, as after slipping on the protective necklace the blond photomancer clearly remained drained by the ordeal, her pose suggesting she was feeling dizzy and maybe a little weak as well, and to add on top of that, hungry. In her current state, it must've taken quite an epic amount of concentration to follow what Jen was talking about, but the lilac-haired girl was certain that her blond friend was following as her eyes widened, as if she'd just come upon a stunning revelation. "I've never really thought about it like that before," came Star's confession. "I guess when you're dealing with something not normal, you don't think of it that way." "Well, can't say I blame you. Elemancy isn't exactly something that sounds 'scientific' by most people's definition of science," Jen replied. She may not have tons of knowledge at her fingertips, but even by Jen's standards Star is pretty intelligent - and that was part of the reason they are best friends. She certainly caught on quickly enough. Jen nodded as Star shared her previous experiences of losing control over her elemental side, realizing that she'd actually been quite spot-on with her conjectures. But giving it deeper thought - it could be an autoimmune response from her elemental side, but it could also be a Jekyll and Hyde thing. Although based on Star's account her elemental side seemed more instinct-driven than malevolent, a the idea it may be a split personality was out. "...I figured, if I get good enough at photomancy, I can take control of it and maybe make it see reason. Then...I don't know...maybe if we both understand then we can just be one person, if that makes any sense. But I've never thought about it your way." Star commented, a smile forming on her face indicating that Jen's idea had given her hope. And Jen couldn't help but glow with happiness on the inside - something, anything, for her best friend to lead a more normal life would be welcome, whilst still being the same Star she knew and loved. "It might work, and I'll try anything once." "That's the spirit!" Jen replied encouragingly. While she can't deny that Star would ultimately need to master photomancy, the thing is learning how to approach the situation progressively, one stage at a time. And seeing how the use of elemancy puts a strain on the user's body, it was only logical that developing a hardened constitution would be the first step. "It's up to you to decide how you want to go about your training - but my recommendation is to begin with a daily routine of endurance training to build up your stamina," Jen began. "Take care not to push yourself too hard though, and start at a level that you're accustomed to, gradually pushing the envelope as you increase your limit. I know you're not exactly the physical type... but here's where the whole 'focus and discipline' part comes into the picture, eh?" Jen smiled as she leaned back with her arms folded across her chest. |

Star nodded at Jen's words, a thoughtful expression replacing her bright smile as she considered them. She propped her elbow up on the table, resting her chin on the back of her hand. She had never really done any sort of exercise routine before. That wasn't to say she was unfit. She had grown up in a rural area and had been an active child, so she had done her fair share of walking, running around, swimming, climbing trees, and all sorts of things and she was physically fit enough to be energetic and to know how to get out of the way. But sports? Actual planned exercise? It really wasn't her thing. She wasn't even sure she owned some actual exercise clothes, although she did have loose old clothes that she painted in and sometimes wore when she needed to do something physical. Even her Arcadia uniform was a skirt, pretty much cementing the fact that she was the sorcerer to Meglumar's swordsman. She wondered if that made her a magical girl, and quickly forced herself to stay on track before she derailed her train of thought altogether. "Teach me?" she asked, leaning back at her seat and smiling up at her best friend. "I wouldn't know where to start." |

"Teach me?" Jen expected that. Judging from Star's rural background the lilac-haired girl figured that even if she wasn't particularly athletic, her blond friend wasn't exactly unfit either. Like any girl who grew up in the countryside, she probably led a rather active lifestyle. "I wouldn't know where to start." "Well, the first step before embarking on any sort of physical training regime is to find out where your limits are. You could try a run around the field; see how many laps around the field you can run before you get winded," Jen began as she leaned forward in her seat, her fingers laced together in a pyramid shape. "Of course, by running I mean to maintain an evenly-paced jog, no stopping and no slowing down to a walk. Sounds tiring, and a little torturous I know... but outside of being placed in actual danger, that's about one of the more sensible ways to test the upper limits of your fitness." "When you know where your limits lie, that will help you set a reasonable target on improving your abilities - basically, knowing what you are capable of doing now, and what you wish to become capable of doing within a time frame of your choosing; like say, by how much do you wish to improve within three months?" It certainly wasn't an easy thing for Jen; but that was how she managed to build up her own fitness to its present levels - a constant process of testing her limits, then pushing herself past them. Jen eyed Star thoughtfully before continuing, "My suggestion would be to start with jogging, either in the morning or in the evening - once every other day. Me? I do strength and endurance workouts and martial arts practice on an alternating days basis... but for you, being new to workout regimes I'd suggest starting on a lower intensity. And seeing how photomancy is a ranged power, strength isn't an issue for you - that means you can devote more time to endurance training. Oh, and don't worry - I'll be coaching you during your training sessions." Jen offered, flashing Star with a friendly, helpful smile. |

Star winced slightly at Jen's recommendations. She could already tell that this would be less fun than photomancy drills with Damon, and that was saying something, because at least she could tease Damon. Still, jogging didn't sound too bad. She had had to walk a lot at home and still walked most places even in Hyakuji, because her Japanese wasn't good enough to completely figure out all of the public transportation, although she knew what to use to get most places. Plus the last time she had used Doomtrain to take her somewhere that wasn't the Elemancer Tower, Chizu had been a little annoyed. "Sounds like a plan," she said. Star smiled at her friend. "Can we start tomorrow? I'm a little exhausted right now." And she still had to eat lunch, and probably go out shopping for clothes to wear while exercising. After all, although she had a few old clothes, she didn't really have very much activewear. Star glanced at the clock, her eyes widening slightly. "Jen, we have to hurry!" she said. She had almost forgotten that they were on their lunch break, and after lunch, they would need to get back to class. Fuu was probably still waiting for them. |
