As the group sat down in the dining car Spike looked uncertainly as to where he was supposed to sit. After a moment he sat down beside Lavender. No need to over think things. It wasn't like it mattered who he sat by on the ride there. As they started talking about how they were headed to Chizu's hometown Spike assumed it was where she got bullied. As such he grimaced, but she mentioned that she'd never been there before. That made him unsure what was going on, but he more or less got the idea. Chizu's dad lost a fight to the death, but he actually fell into a demon portal or something. And the demon portal was in Chizu's hometown she'd never been to. He wondered what sort of town it was, but really it had nothing to do with Chizu and they probably wouldn't be there long. Spike didn't usually worry about things, but... eh it'd be fine. "So, we go into that portal after him?" Spike was trying to figure out what the plan was here. He wasn't so sure he had it down. As far as he could tell this seemed like something he would have come up with. He kinda expected Chizu to have a less... stupid plan. |

Setsuna filed meekly into the train between everyone else, feeling a bit nervous about being in a confined space with so many dangerous people. Relief came in the knowledge they were mostly on her side, save for that Kaito who's moral inclinations were, at best, ambiguous. As fate would have it, she'd be squished up in the busy Japanese train between the lovely Lavender-sensei and Kaito's surprisingly firm arm and shoulder blade. Swallowing her nervousness as best she could, Setsuna quietly looked up at him, a few inches and years her senior with a maturity that showed for it. It bugged her that conventionally handsome Japanese men around here always ended up being so sinister it seemed and yet in a Japanese city filled with exotic foreigners, all the foreign men were heroes. N-not that she was a racist or anything! Setsuna had just always dreamed she'd end up with a man who looked like Kaito. Well, she'd fantasized about it anyway. Catching herself hanging on his words a little, she quickly looked away and resumed being thoughtful about the trials that awaited them all at their final destination. A mysterious portal leading to a land of eternal battle. It was equally ambiguous to say the least and might be filled with any number of unusual creatures and dangerous monsters. Portals in Japan never went to nice places, they went to horrible places like the underworld or Labyrinth or the mirror world. "It sounds like we know a lot less about this than we should...running in blindly could be really unsafe unless someone knows something about it that we don't." Setsuna wasn't intentionally referring to Kaito with that statement, but when she thought about it, he would probably be the only one to withhold information from them. |

"Agreed. Portals are typically bad. Since your father hasn't come back out, there's something keeping him from getting him out, or something." Damon said, agreeing with Setsuna. If he had a penny for every portal that messed up, he'd be rich. Especially if he just counted the elf he had to put up with during the heartless war. Combine that with the sheer amount of time this man was there. If there was a chance Chizu's father was alive, he was going to make sure he was rescued. But there was obviously something more to this. He was gone for years. Something had to be complicating the situation, he didn't know what, but it had to be something big. Maybe a Demon. He had no idea, though. This was going to be interesting... |

Aether turned towards Nickle. "It's been quite a while since I was last there, and towns have changed radically in the past century or so," he said, frowning slightly as he tried to think about what he was going to say. "But from what I've observed before, it's a small town. From what I'd seen, it's one of those towns where everybody knows everybody else, although by the time I'd left, most people had forgotten that the Yamamuras used to be aeromancers. That--and the story about the shrine--is considered to be just a story. Considering the fact that Chizu's family hasn't turned out an aeromancer in 400 years, their disbelief isn't unfounded." Aether turned towards Chizu, and Chizu thought that the dragon was frowning at her. She frowned back, trying to read his expression. It irritated her when Aether did that--like he knew or thought something about her that she didn't know. It was bad enough when he wasn't physical. Now she could see it and feel it. He knew her better than anyone else, because he had lived inside her mind, but she sometimes felt like she didn't know him much at all. She looked away. Instead of answering everyone's questions about the portal, Chizu looked up, fixing Kaito with a pointed look. He looked up at her as well and met her eyes, a frown on his face before he nodded slowly. "From what I could gather about the realm behind the portal, it looks like time runs differently on one side of it than it does on the other. I'm not certain how large the disparity is, but it's possible that what was twelve years to us could have simply been one or two years for him. My father's diaries all mark Yamamura Itsuki as an extremely skilled swordsman, so it's possible he could still be alive." He frowned. "...It's probably easier to open the portal from our side than the other, given the probable nature of the realm. However, since the portal won't close with something still inside it, it might be possible to keep it open a crack by, say, keeping some string or a rope running through it. That might fix the time problem as well." He paused for a moment, looking up at the group. "...I'm open to suggestions." Chizu raised an eyebrow, giving him a look that clearly read 'You could have mentioned this sooner' before frowning and thinking over the problem. "We can't keep it open," she said. "What if something gets out that should be kept in?" |

"Then we catch it and kill it." said Nickle with a bit a smile to his face, trying to lighten the air around their little crowd. Yes it was a serious matter, but that didn't mean they had to absolutely remain in a morbid mood about it. When you got too serious, you became less hopeful about things or began to doubt things. Nickle wasn't about to let that happen. Still, the issue with the portal remaining open in a small mountain town wasn't exactly the most settling thing. With everyone probably knowing everyone else, outsiders opening portals very well might result in having them stoned as witches. "Well, there's always this option. Someone waits on the other side of the portal to keep it open. After all, Chizu is a survivor of an ancient bloodline, there's got to be respect for that and a favour we can squeeze out of it, right?" The alternative was one of them staying on the outside of the portal to keep it open themselves and make sure the townspeople don't get uppity about it. A rope leading outside would be a good idea too, but then they'd need a really big rope. Then Nickle smiled, having an idea. "Wait a sec, you said that something could keep the portal open, what about one or two of these?" Nickle pulled out two Abenobashi tokens, "With a bit of my mojo acting as batteries, they could keep a small portion of the portal open for a while, maybe?" Best just to get the idea out there at least. |

Lavender nodded as Aether shed a some light on the Yamamura family history - an aeromancer lineage? Interesting. Albeit that was more than 400 years ago, and Chizu was the first aeromancer in their long family line after several generations of Yamamuras without any aeromancy abilities. After Aether was done introducing the Yamamura family history, Kaito spoke his piece about the portal leading to the realm where Chizu's father had apparently spent 12 years in. Needless to say, the younger aeromancer had her reservations about keeping the portal open, especially given how they could end up unleashing something upon the world that was better left inside that realm. "Nickle-san's got some good ideas," Lavender had taken her time to listen to Nickle's ideas and found them pretty solid. If this was indeed a clan village, Chizu would probably be someone of pretty high standing amongst the populace, which might be enough for them to gain some help from the locals. "But Setsuna-chan's made a point too... there's no telling what might be waiting for us on the other side of the portal. It might be a prudent idea to have one or two of us to scout ahead first, to give the others an idea of how things are over there." |

Spike was worried that the plan really was: Jump into portal. Find Chizu's Dad. Leave Portal. Things were never that easy... Even without things like magic portals plans like that fell apart. And they apparently didn't even have that plan worked out since they were working out how to leave portal. Eh, who was he kidding? Spike proceeded to give up trying to follow what was going on in this plan. He was just gonna confuse or worry himself or both, and that didn't really help anything. He was sure he'd be able to pick up enough of it without giving it too much actual thought. Time-lapse demon portal. Go in. Get Chizu's Dad. Bust back out, taking down whatever was keeping them in there. There. He knew the plan. Now all the people with magic super-powers could work out the details while he sat there with an arrogant look on his face. He wasn't really feeling arrogant but it was what his face defaulted to. |

Setsuna shrunk into herself a bit, suddenly feel a bit disparaged as everyone began bouncing ideas off one-another. It was true that she knew a little about magic, but not very much since her abilities weren't very well explained to her and she'd only known a couple other people who could even do things like she could. All this back and forth talking about how to open portals or close them, time whatchamacallit and monsters that lived in alternate dimensions was beginning to put her ill-at-ease. "I-I'm afraid this kind of stuff is just way over my head...but I trust Chizu-sempai to make the right decision since she's so smart!" She said with a nervous smile. Still, if there was one part of this that Setsuna could at least somewhat relate to, it was the plight of Chizu's father. She knew what it felt like to be all alone for a long time when everything around you seems like it's out to get you. Setsuna wasn't even a very strong person either and even though her friends had done most of the work, she'd managed to survive on her own for awhile without them. Granted, it had been a far less than perfect survival but it was a success in her own mind. If someone like her could last so long on her own, someone who was so weak, then certainly Chizu's father would have to still be alive. Setsuna's fingers knotted into fists on her thighs as she stared up at Kaito with a determined expression her face. "I'm...I'm almost certain that Chizu's father must be alive, h-he's too strong not to be! It only makes sense after all..." Her voice trailed off a bit, realizing they wouldn't really know what she was basing that off of. "At least in my mind it does..." She said timidly. |

"Let's hold off on the idea of killing." Damon said, with irritation. Well, more irritation. Again with people jumping right to killing. If it was a Demon with no morals or a non-sentient being then sure, but for crying out loud, who were they to determine what lived and what died? "The idea of a rope sounds like a good idea for keeping the portal open. If you can't close a door, you can't lock it. A for things getting out, that I'm not sure of. What kind of things are behind it, and how many? Either way. an initial scouting group does sound like the best plan here. Once we know exactly what we're dealing with we can fix whatever our final plans are before we all head in." |

"I volunteer for the scouting," said Chizu, frowning slightly. "I'm pretty much the fastest person here, so if stuff happens, I can get away." She didn't mention what the people who knew her best probably knew she was thinking. None of them would be here if it weren't for her. If it was extremely dangerous, and if there were any nasty surprises waiting for them, she wouldn't allow anybody else to take that risk. She would go in first and see what was going on. A hesitant pause. "I...volunteer..." said Kaito slowly, looking across the table. Chizu looked up at him, frowning slightly. She knew that he should volunteer, since this whole thing was his fault in the first place, but she hadn't actually expected him to. Maybe Kaito really had changed from the spineless coward he had been two years ago. Or maybe he knew exactly what was behind there and was setting a trap. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. "...Alright," she said, nodding at him. Trap or no trap, she would be better off having him where she could see him and not hanging around with her friends and loved ones. Kaito was an enemy she could deal with. If he was telling the truth, then he needed to go. If he was lying, she couldn't do a damn thing about it, because she had already made up her mind to take her chances. "Who else?" she asked, looking up at the table. |

Nickle had a feeling Chizu would volunteer for scouting. However he hadn't anticipated that Kaito would go and do such a thing. Yes it was his information that had brought us here in the first place, but Nickle had only heard stories about him and as such didn't trust him as far as he could throw him. Which wasn't far really. Nickle may be strong but he didn't often throw people... THe point was, whoever else was to go needed to keep not only and eye out for what was inside the portal but also for Kaito. Nickle naturally wanted to go inside, with his power he'd be more than capable of buldozing a way if it came to that. However, a bulldozer wasn't what they needed for a scouting party. But perhaps once the scouting party returned, they'd be able to tell them where Chizu's father was and how to get to him. That was when Nickle could clear a path. He looked at Chizu, "You know more than anything I'd want to go. However, I'm not certain I'd be suited for it entirely. I'm not exactly a stealthy type and neither is my power. Even if I could break us out to get back to the others, we'd have a hell of a time getting back in due to all the guards I'd have stirred up." If it came to Nickle having to wait by the portal he would. Damon or Lavender would be more suited to this sort of thing. Damon purely because keeping to the shadows was in his nature and Lavender had had training in order to do so. |

"The idea of a rope sounds like a good idea for keeping the portal open. If you can't close a door, you can't lock it. A for things getting out, that I'm not sure of. What kind of things are behind it, and how many? Either way. an initial scouting group does sound like the best plan here. Once we know exactly what we're dealing with we can fix whatever our final plans are before we all head in." So common consensus says that a scouting party would be the most prudent course of action as Damon nailed it right on the head. Portals. Always a bother... while Lavender was no stranger to portals, having handled GLADIUS' gateway deployment system before as well as jumping through cross gates during the Kingdom Hearts incident, she'd learned enough from traveling through portals to know that no two portal system worked identically, and this one would be no exception. There's a danger that they could get trapped on the other side, or the portal could stay open and unleash all manner of diabolical creatures upon this world... but most importantly, they needed to know what awaited them on the other side. Chizu was the first to volunteer herself, and Lavender nodded at the younger aeromancer's reasons, and then there was Kaito. Needless to say, Lavender was one of those who knew well enough that scouting was hardly one of Nickle's strengths, and his powers weren't designed for subtlety, as much as he'd want to be part of the scouting party - given how Chizu would be on the other side of the portal with Kaito, and it would only be understandable that Nickle would want Kaito where he could see him, but the electromancer wasn't shy to admit stealth wasn't his cup of tea. "Who else?" Chizu asked. "If we're gonna need a group to do a spy on the enemy without raising Hell, I'm on it," Lavender added. No doubt among those present, Chizu, Nickle and Damon knew her well enough that when it comes to battlefield recon, Lavender would be their go-to woman, especially given the training she'd received from special forces that were further honed during her time in GLADIUS. To move like ghosts while under cover, to be able give the illusion of being everywhere and nowhere, and to give her enemies a reason to fear the dark. "Covert ops has always been my thing, don't forget I was trained by military special forces." |

"I'll..." Spike thought about his words, though only for a moment. "Watch the portal, while you guys scout it out." Spike, to the shock of anyone who knew him, hadn't volunteered to charge headlong into the evil demon portal. Well, if they had been charging headlong into it he probably would have. He was pretty arrogant, but in this case he knew perfectly well that he couldn't scout things. He'd just stay back with Nickel, though his instant dislike of Kaito made him unsure how he felt about Nickel staying back while he went in. Still, Spike was sure that the teacher or possibly Damon would take care of him if he got out of line. Spike just felt strange stepping back like that. He was sure no one would think any less of him though. And while it wasn't really a good thing to think about if anything did try to escape from there he'd face it. |

"It'll be best if I'm not in there." Damon said, bluntly. He knew full well Chizu would be able to watch and thrash Kaito if he tried something stupid. And with Lavender Sensei along, it'd be the last stupid thing Kaito ever pulled. Besides that, he knew full well being around Kaito would make him more tense, as well as more likely to screw up. Stealth wouldn't be easy if he spent every second watching his back. Furthermore, Aeromancers were just plain better at scouting than he would be. "If anything DOES try to escape while you scout, the rest of us can stop whatever attempts the escape." He continued. That seemed like the best possible course of action, in his eyes. |
