No matter the size of the town, the ethnicity of those who dwelled within it or their spiritual preference, there was one place that was very nearly universally peaceful. Forget coffee shops and book stores, museums and libraries, places of learning or supposed tranquility. Throughout her travels, throughout the many years that she had wandered, only one place had proven to be perpetually peaceful. They went by different names, yes, and separate practices, but there was nothing quite like a good old-fashioned cemetery to assuage one's nerves. It was imposing to say the least, especially as dusk began to creep across the ground, the rare winter sun sliding down over the horizon and casting elongated shadows across the ground. Wrought iron, heavy with age, curled around the perimeter of the graveyard, an ancient fence that had somehow managed to withstand the pull and push of the elements, either keeping all those unwanted guests or those desired in. That was how Adele liked to view it as she stood at the gate, one hand resting lightly on the intricately worked metal, breath rising in slow puffs from behind her scarf. Even here, standing just outside the entrance to the cemetery, it was quieter, more peaceful than anywhere else in the whole city limits of Hyakuji. Without waiting for another moment to pass she stepped forward, shoes crunching on the slightly compacted layer of snow already existing there. For once she allowed her guard to drop, if only slightly, and glanced down, eyes sweeping across the ground before her. There were other footprints there, each different, a unique set leading in every direction, branching out amongst the headstones, a story of love and loss unfolding before her. Her own expression distant, Adele lightly followed a set of imprints that told of expensive high heels paired with a tinier set of sneakers, most likely belonging to a child. She followed them slowly, careful not to step on any of the graves as custom dictated until she reached the appropriate headstone. It was marked in a language she couldn't read, not that she needed to, especially as she paused to inspect the fresh bouquet of roses there, a light dusting of snow resting over the crimson petals. Time to move again. She turned, this time looking up, eyes fixing on a mausoleum with a set of wide granite steps. She stepped carefully around the graves again, though with less patience this time, making her way to the crypt. Snow had begun to fall once again, the Italian woman cursing the seemingly perpetual snowfall as fat flakes drifted lazily through the air, brushing a few off of her lashes. Annoying, especially when they began to melt. She reached down to brush some snow off the steps once she reached the mausoleum before sitting down, squirming slightly at the feel of the chill stone before forcing herself to settle down, breathing out a sigh of contentment as she glanced about. All alone in the peace and quiet. Everything was going perfectly. |

Krystal strode slowly into the area, the snow muffling out the sound of her boots. Her hands were tucked into the pockets of her winter coat, attempting to keep them warm. Snowflakes settled themselves into her hair, nearly blending in with the light colour of it. The evening was cold and the teenager's monet blue eyes reflected just that. She came to this cemetery, hoping for a peaceful moment just to think. Krystal prayed that she was alone as she ventured deeper and deeper into the cemetery. To her dismay, her prayers were unanswered. Krystal stumbled upon a woman. The woman's back was facing her and she was only able to see her long brown hair. Unable to see the face of this peculiar lady, she inched closer. |

The silence weighed upon her, thick and drowsy, the mesmerizing tumble of snowflakes past her line of sight slowly but steadily lulling Adele into complacency. Night was fast approaching and while she was unaware of the rules involving the graveyard and how it was off-limits after dark she had planned to leave shortly after arriving. Now, though, she was comfortable, elbows resting on her knees, scarf-covered chin cradled in her open palms, staring at the gravestones before her, heaped high with a fluff of downy snow, those snowflakes falling catching the light of the few lits lanterns and refracting them in a glistening spectrum. It was entrancing to simply sit there and watch, thinking of nothing and everything all at once until her mind had been reduced to a slow, buzzing slur of incoherent thoughts. Such revelries were not meant to last though, especially as the faint scuffle of delicate feet met her ears, the mercenary groggily forcing herself out of her peace-induced stupor. It took only a moment to shake herself back to reality, rolling her shoulders back as she straightened, one hand drifting with the casual nonchalance of years on-the-lam towards her pistol. She didn't touch it, though, fingers merely hovering, at the ready, as she swiveled slowly in place, blinking back mild surprise, taken aback that some random girl had managed to sneak up on her relatively unawares. "Don't sneak up on people like that," Adele snapped, her first reaction to be tense, hoping that the girl was at least slightly contrite. For some odd reason, though, she immediately felt guilty. It must have been because of the calm of the graveyard, instilling some rare patience and shred of humanity in her. Huffing to herself under her breath, Adele turned her whole body to face the girl, forcing a genial smile upon her lips as she did so. "It's a graveyard, after all, and some people are jumpy," she offered by way of a lame explanation. |

"Gomenasai, ojou-sama," Krystal bowed slightly, her face showing slight guilt. During her years as a gang member, she was taught to show respect to her elders and everyone in general. She noticed that the lady was definitely a foreigner. Possibly an European, for there were no sign of any Asian features to indicate that she was even Asian to begin with. Night was threatening to befall the both of them but somehow, Krystal could make out the olive colour of her skin. Another giveaway. Those blue eyes of hers - Krystal could make out - were the eyes of one with little regard for any sort of feeling. Although, when she flinched, she could see guilt flash across it for a moment. Overall, Krystal thought that this ojou-sama was a very pretty lady with exotic looks. She made herself comfortable next to the foreign lady. "Ojou-sama, what is a pretty woman like you doing here?" she inquired. Edited by Michiyo Makino, Dec 22 2010, 08:06 AM.

"Gomenasai, ojou-sama. Ojou-sama, what is a pretty woman like you doing here?" She was more the mildly surprised by the girl's pleasant and courteous reply to her own somewhat snide remarks, forcing herself to be at least a bit more civil. She took a bit longer to examine the girl, dark eyes flicking critically across her face until a faint smile began to tug at the corners of her mouth. Young, without a doubt another student from the local high school. Mid-teens, a slight build, with a strange hair color that Adele couldn't say she'd seen before, not that it was unattractive. Unlike Adele, her eyes were a pale, icy blue instead of the darker sapphire that the Italian woman's were, though the mercenary couldn't help but feel jealous of the shade. It was undeniably attractive, after all, and unique compared to her own standard hue. "Enjoying the silence," Adele finally said, choosing at long last to reply to the girl's question. "I find that a busy town such as this has few places were true calm can be achieved. I've also come to realize that cemeteries are perhaps the only place where this peace and quiet is very nearly universally applicable," she added, feeling that a more adequate explanation was needed. She straightened slowly, pausing to brush some of the snow that had collected on her shoulders off and readjust her scarf, pulling it down just far enough so that it was easier to speak to the girl. For some reason she was feeling uncharacteristically chatty, not that that was a bad thing. Well, then again, it likely could be if she didn't watch her mouth around the young girl. "I'm Adele," she finally said, extending a hand, trying to keep the conversation going at least somewhat. The snow was beginning to fall heavier now, fat flakes twirling past the lanterns that lit the cemetery. It was fast approaching nightfall, the last traces of pastel color swiftly fading from the sky. Probably not the best of signs, Adele decided. |

"Enjoying the silence. I find that a busy town such as this has few places were true calm can be achieved. I've also come to realize that cemeteries are perhaps the only place where this peace and quiet is very nearly universally applicable." Krystal simply nodded in agreement. This woman was speaking the truth. She noticed that Hyakuji was a town full of hustle and bustle and in a place like that, it is rather difficult to find a place that is usually peaceful and quiet. Even if she were to go to a quiet playground, there would be kids who would want to have fun later. The snow tickled at the exposed skin below her thighs for she had worn a black pleated mini skirt and her boots. Her maroon-coloured shirt could still be seen under her winter coat. "I'm Adele." "I am Krystal," the young girl shook the lady's hand, acknowledging her. Edited by Michiyo Makino, Dec 23 2010, 01:36 AM.

"I am Krystal." "A pleasure," Adele said crisply, giving her hand a short but firm shake. She wasn't one for prolonged touching of strangers unless it was an attractive young man, but that was most definitely not the current situation. Who knew if the girl was carrying a hidden weapon or not. Adele always was, even if she wasn't the definition of a normal person, and now was no different. So far she hadn't needed to use it yet and preferably wouldn't have to, especially here in the graveyard, which meant that it would stay tucked away at her side. Brushing a few errant strands of hair behind her ear, Adele glanced curiously about the graveyard. Darkness had fallen with a disquieting note of finality, the only visibility coming from the smattering of lanterns that cast warm puddles of light across the white snow, the rest of the tombstones wrapped in complete shadow. Her eyes flicked at long last towards the gate just as it swung ponderously shut, the metal grinding in protest. That...didn't look good. "Must be on a timer," she mumbled under her breath, more to herself than anything, turning to once again look at Krystal. "There's a time limit on this graveyard?" she asked, feeling a flicker of annoyance. Who closed down a cemetery at night, after all? what if someone worked all day and wanted to visit the deceased when they got off from their job? Disrespectful, that was what. Whoever maintained the graveyard deserved a good kick in the rear or a bullet in the foot, either of which Adele was willing to deliver. Unfortunately, the fence was a bit high for her to climb comfortably, especially at the gate. "Know if there's another way out?" |

Krystal watched as the cemetery gates swung forward and trapped them in the cemetery. It was as if a strong wind had blown it shut. She blinked her eyes twice. She hadn't expected that to happen. Krystal would have jumped over the fence if it weren't for the pointed edges. "Know if there's another way out?" The girl turned and shook her head in defeat. "I am unable to help. I was unaware of the cemetery's closing time," she said lifelessly. Truth to be told, Krystal actually knew the gate's closing time. However, she did not expect to stay later than intended. Today was a good example of that. Her fingers unconsciously played with her side ponytail. Krystal was bored and that was one sign of it. "Have you ever been to a prom, ojou-sama?" she asked, curiosity and boredom striking her. |

| Daisaku | Dec 24 2010, 02:53 AM Post #9 |

It wasn't often that Daisaku visited such quiet places as cemeteries. In fact, with the exception of a visit paid to his parents' graves toward the beginning of his year-long journey, Daisaku hadn't knowingly set foot in a graveyard with the intention of lingering since his childhood. This aversion to total silence was especially strong on particularly dark, chilly nights, which it just so happened to be when Daisaku wandered into Hyakuji's cemetery in search of a shortcut back to his dormitory. Of course, it wasn't fear that kept the Spiral Warrior away from those sorts of places, but rather, a feeling of stagnation and uneasiness brought on by a complete lack of other people. He longed for the bright lights of the city, the crowds of people headed for different destinations, and a myriad of distractions to keep him from getting to wherever he was going. However, Daisaku was tired, and his bed was sounding better and better by the minute. He decided not to keep it waiting for much longer. It was a shame, though; big cities were even more beautiful than usual when it snowed at night. Had Daisaku been more awake, he would have reveled in it and enjoyed every bit of nightlife he could manage. Just the sight of the cascading snowflakes falling elegantly amidst the brilliantly lit skyscrapers in the distance sent a chill down the cheerful young man's spine. Still, he could appreciate the peaceful stillness of the cemetery to an extent, but what some would perceive as pleasant tranquility, Daisaku saw only as gloominess. So, when the gate automatically snapped shut behind him, he was almost too focused on the city outside the fence to really notice. Indeed, he was hardly paying the cemetery itself any mind at all. Of course, when it did dawn on him that something unseen had closed the gate, Daisaku's eyes bugged out and he took a moment to look around in relative shock. When he saw that the dead had, in fact, not risen from their tombs to wreak havoc on the realm of the living, he let out a sigh of relief. He was in no real mood to fight zombies at the moment. It immediately became clear to him that the gate acted automatically, and it had come time to "close up shop", so to speak. On reflection, he supposed it was a bit early to be locking off the cemetery, not to mention a bad idea to do so without checking to make sure there was nobody left inside, but it wasn't something he could do anything about at the moment. So, slipping his hands into his pockets, Daisaku pressed onward with a rather casual, relaxed stride, managing to enjoy the graceful beauty of the snowfall even without a city to go with it. Scaling the fence would be no great inconvenience when it came time to take his leave; his only real trouble would be explaining to those outside why he was alone in a cemetery after it closed. However, Daisaku found himself distracted from his eventual destination when he caught sight of two young women standing near a mausoleum. Though he certainly didn't want to interrupt their conversation, it occurred to Daisaku that they might not have been able to get out quite as easily as he could. Without a second thought, he changed his course and began walking toward the duo. "Hey, you guys stuck here or something?" He asked politely as he approached the girls, wearing a characteristically-friendly smile. |

"I am unable to help. I was unaware of the cemetery's closing time." Adele sighed faintly, not really surprised by that particular piece of information. The girl seemed as if she had been taken aback just as much as the Italian woman herself had, albeit she wasn't quite so...expressive. Brought a new meaning to the term "ice queen," Adele thought, allowing herself some temporary bemusement with such a revelation, eyes following the girl for the briefest of moments. She didn't seem too worried, which meant that Adele herself would have to act just as nonchalant and relaxed, something that wasn't particularly appealing given the current situation. She would much rather get out of the graveyard than sit around scratching her bum and waiting for the sun to rise while staring around with the glassy-eyed intensity reserved for dolls. Yes, getting out was sounding more and more preferable as the minutes ticked by. "Have you ever been to a prom, ojou-sama?" That question took Adele by surprise, the woman turning her attention sharply away from searching the fences for an opening to stare at the girl, a faint frown pursing her lips. "Prom? No, I can't say I have. Why?" As innocent and innocuous as the inquiry was it had set her on edge. She hadn't had what one would call a normal childhood, far from it, and wasn't exactly fond of remembering it. Why would that girl ask such an odd question, after all? Or was that normal, did it have pertinence to the current situation? Adele tore her gaze quickly away from Krystal, gnawing contemplatively on her lower lip as she attempted to squint through the darkness, half-tempted to go over and try to climb the fence by herself if only to escape the odd question. "Hey, you guys stuck here or something?" Another person appeared suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, quite literally appearing out of the dark and snowfall, Adele's hand falling reflexively towards her pistol. He wasn't some horrid ghoul or blood-soaked apparition, though, merely a boy with a smile on his lips. Consciously forcing her hand away from her pistol and a smile likewise upon her face, Adele turned to the new arrival, letting go of a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding, a plume of steam puffing out of her mouth in the span of one quick sigh. "That we are. Am I to assume you're in the same boat?" the woman asked, gesturing encompassingly to the cemetery with one hand, though her eyes never left his face. She hadn't gotten where she was by heedlessly trusting everyone, after all. Or anyone for that case. |

"Hey, you guys stuck here or something?" Krystal whipped her head and came face to face with a red-haired boy. She noted that both of his eyes and hair were of an interesting shade of red. The boy looked a tad bit older than her and possibly from the local high school that she attended. She expected students of Hyakuji to be somewhat tense most of the time. However, she was proven wrong. This boy closely resembled an extremely relaxed person. Krystal couldn't call him a slacker because the aura that the boy emitted was dangerous. She somewhat scowled inwardly. The boy had inner power waiting to be unleashed. Krystal could tell that this boy was certainly something. |

As expected, both of the young women reacted with a degree of shock as Daisaku approached from the unseen depths of the graveyard. Being alone in a cemetery after dark was enough to leave even the hardened Spiral Warrior feeling just a bit jittery, and he was fully capable of fighting off every corpse or apparition within its gates. He could only imagine how uneasy the two of them must have felt, especially considering they probably would have had a tougher time of scaling the fence to escape their confines. Never mind how cold it was, come to think of it; in fact, the more Daisaku pondered their situation and decidedly-unfavorable circumstances, the more sympathy he felt toward the two of them. Indeed, they would likely be all but defenseless in the event of a zombie attack. So, while he made sure to take note of the initial motion, Daisaku hardly even reacted when one of the two women reached for what appeared to be some sort of gun- most likely a pistol. Rather than take any sort of reflexive action, he simply chose to maintain his relaxed, charming smile and was quite relieved when she returned it with one of her own. "Hmm...stuck? Well, not exactly." He admitted with a rather sheepish grin, scratching the back of his head somewhat embarrassedly. At this point, he noticed the woman force her hand away from the gun; of course, he wouldn't blame her if she still felt a bit suspicious. "I was just taking a shortcut back to my dorm. I don't come here often- a bit quiet for my taste- so I didn't know it closed so early." Daisaku let out a deep sigh and forced a cough. He really couldn't get over how stupid a system it was to have a cemetery, of all places, close up automatically. The three of them were, if anything, evidence supporting his claim. There wasn't even a security guard in sight. "I mean, I won't have any problem hopping the fence, so...if you guys need some help getting out, I could...I dunno, give you a boost or something?" He shrugged his shoulders and blurted out the first solution that came to mind. He doubted punching through the gate and making a run for it would blow over well with the authorities, after all. The other girl, meanwhile, seemed to be examining him, as if she could see something that others couldn't. Of course, considering he was at a school for the supernaturally gifted, such an ability would actually be one of the tamer things he had witnessed. She looked to be just a bit younger than he was, but still old enough to attend the school, so that seemed to be the most likely explanation. "Oh, yeah...guess I forgot to introduce myself. How rude of me." He said with a chuckle. "I'm Daisaku Yoshida. Pleasure to meet you guys." Daisaku continued politely, giving a brief, informal bow. |
