Robert took a deep breath of icy air and stood up. The air sent a shiver through his body and he exhaled, his breath visible as a small cloud of steam. He had spent enough time resting, it was time to get back to practicing. He had spent the last half-hour resting from a practice session well over an hour long. The fruits of his labor were evident on one of the nearby trees. The tree was filled with pens and pencils buried deep into it. Robert had been practicing his aim with his choice of weapons. He had chosen that in order to protect himself, school supplies would be the ideal weapons when combined with his powers. They also stood out a lot less than more traditional weapons. Brushing the dead grass from his jeans, he walked over to the tree, placing a hand on it. He turned the part of the trunk surrounding the first pencil to the same density as putty, and tugged the thing out, leaving an odd hole in the trunk as he allowed the density to return. He repeated this again and again until he had a bundle of about 50 pens and pencils. "Hmm... maybe a bigger challenge is in order." he said to himself. He ran his finger in a circle on the trunk, altering the density again to make it more clay-like. The bark was pushed aside, leaving a small circle which he marked an 'x' in the middle of. With that, he walked back to where he had stood previously, and took one large stride back. "Time to see how I do." he said, and began hurling steel-hard pens and pencils toward the tree, punching more holes in the wood as he aimed for the makeshift target. |

The scent of a stranger alerted Rein's senses. His focus quickly shifted from training to finding this person. He and Kaze have been training for awhile, trying to coordinate their actions with each other but it wasn't long till Rein picked up this mysterious scent. Kaze patiently followed her warg, waiting for him to find what he was looking for. She couldn't stop him anyway--his wolf instincts wouldn't let this one slide. Sometimes it worried her if he was becoming too much of a wolf. She was afraid that he'd lose his human side. "Find it yet?" She asked. He sniffed the ground a couple of times till the scent led him to a tree deeply filled with pens and pencils. Kaze's eyes widened in surprise, seeing this odd-looking tree. Certainly, this was done by someone. "Interesting." She whispered, walking closer and placing a hand on the trunk of the particular tree. Her curiosity sparked after she couldn't find any explanation for this. Rein growled softly, telling Kaze that the person was just nearby. The huntress and her wolf moved to the other trees until they caught sight of the culprit. It was a guy with silver hair. Kaze watched how he just touched the tree and created markings on it. He then moved to sending pens and pencils to the target, creating holes in the tree. "So he's training," She whispered to her warg, "Pretty good aiming skills but let's see how sharp his focus is." She reached out for one silver arrow on her quiver and placed it on her bow. She aimed at a certain spot, inches away from the guy. With one quick release, she sent the arrow flying towards him. |

Things were going well so far. Robert had managed to keep his throws clustered in the same area, filling up the circle he had made in the tree. A few had been way off at first, but before long he had gotten into a good rhythm and his aim had improved greatly. He still had about 10 more pencils when he heard a faint twang followed by a whistling sound. He instinctively dove to the ground, rolling to one knee then standing, pencils and pens held between his fingers, ready to hurled towards any direction. At the same time, he held his arms crossed in front of him and increased his clothing's density to that of plate steel. "Who's out there?" he shouted "Try that again and all you'll manage is getting a few of these stuck in ya." His southern twang became a bit more prominent as he shouted. He scanned the surrounding area, frozen in place due to his hardened clothing. He had no idea who would be out here or why they would shoot at him. That just made things more troubling. He glanced at the arrow that was now half buried in the ground and made a rough guess to where it came from. "Listen, I'll count to ten, and if you don't come out, well, let's just say it may not be pretty. One. Two. Three..." So he counted, and waited for his unseen attacker to show themselves. |

One. Two. Three…. Kaze leaned her back against the tree, still refusing to show herself. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, unsure of whether it was a good idea to step out. NOW she got him all alert and probably pissed off. Who would appreciate almost getting shot while training? Rein, who was standing right in front of her, growled in a lecturing tone. “Alright, I shouldn't have shot at him….but I was curious.” She whispered, glancing at her warg. “And I did get my answer so….” She was still undecided and she failed to notice what number her ‘almost-victim’ was on. Rein quickly moved forward, pushing her out of the tree with his head. “Alright! Alright! I’m out.” She called out, both hands raised up. Her wolf stood by her side, preparing for whatever trouble there may be because of Kaze’s recklessness.“I’m sorry. That shot wasn’t meant to hurt you. I just wanted to see how focused you are.” |

"... Six. Seven..." Robert continued his count, watching the area where the arrow had come from intently. He got ready to return his clothing to normal before throwing his weapons into the thick underbrush. He had no clue what had prompted the actions of his hidden assailant, but he planned on being ready to defend his life if he had to. "... Eight. Nine..." The brush began rustling and shifting and he heard a feminine voice, followed by a rather pretty girl and what looked like a very, very big wolf. She had her hands up and empty, apparently trying to show she didn't plan on taking another shot at him. Perhaps even more surprising was the reason she gave for doing it in the first place. He wasn't really sure what to make of something like that, but she seemed innocent enough. His clothes returned to their original density, and he lowered his hands, slipping all but one of his pencils into various pockets hidden in his clothing. A flick of his wrist buried the pencil in the ground a about 10 inches to the right of her foot. "I'd say that makes us even." he said, relaxing and losing the serious face he had been wearing. "Perhaps next time it would be best not to shoot arrows at random strangers in the woods, especially if they are armed." He flourished his hand and a pair of mechanical pencils seemed to appear out of nowhere, only to vanish just as quickly back into his sleeve. "So, Miss Mystery Archer, mind if I ask who you are, and what brings you and your furry friend out here?" Edited by Tensa Zangetsu, Dec 24 2010, 12:59 AM.

As the pencil flew straight and plunged into the ground, 10 inches away from her, Kaze didn't move a muscle. She only gave a slight grin, amused at the situation. Maybe she should start listening to Rein…’Don’t be too reckless!’…Nah—he wasn’t the boss of her. In fact, she was supposed to be in charge. She gave a single nod, hearing the careful advice of this silver-haired boy about shooting arrows at random people. She focused on observing how he manipulated the mechanical pencils and quickly hid them again. Surely, she hasn’t seen any ability like this one before. “My name is Kaze and this is Rein.” She answered his question, “Just like you, we were in the middle of training until Rein here caught your scent. He was persistent in tracking it and led me here. So....... basically, this is ALL of his fault.” She smiled in confidence while Rein barked in outrage at her statement. It was a good thing that she is the only one who can understand what her wolf is yelling about. “And who might you be, stranger?” She asked. She then turned to the half-buried pencil beside her and slowly picked it up. “You have an interesting ability here.” She commented as she examined the pencil. Robert listened to the girl's explanation, and chuckled at the wolf's bark of what he could only describe as indignation. It seemed the two of them had something of an understanding between them, more so than just a master and her pet. He imagined they had their own way of communicating with each other, if his experiences at Hyakuji had taught him anything so far. "A pleasure to meet you Kaze, My name's Robert McCursky." He gave a little bow, though it was more of an archaic western bow than the traditional Japanese bow. He watched as she pulled his pencil out of the ground, commenting on his abilities. The pencil she held would weigh the same as a normal pencil, but unless she had superhuman strength, she wouldn't be able to so much as bend it, at least for the next 30 seconds. "Thanks for the compliment." he said. He walked over to her and plucked the pencil out of her hand "Though that's only the beginning of what I can do." He held it for a moment, and suddenly it flopped over like it was made of rubber. He stretched it out then tied it in a knot. Then it seemed to stiffen slightly and was once again hard like steel. "Voila!" He said, handing it back to her. "My powers allow me to control the density of anything I touch, something to do with altering molecular bonds or some such. Still not entirely sure how they work, but I know how to use them" He touched one of the trees next to them then dug his fingernails into it, pulling out a small chunk of bark like the tree was made out of clay. Once he lost contact, the tree was just as solid as ever, but the chunk in his hand he began to mold and shape until he made a little stick figure out of it. "It certainly has plenty of uses." |

Kaze gave an impressed applause, seeing how Robert demonstrated more of his abilities by making the pencil as flexible as rubber and creating a stick figure out of a small bark of a tree. Controlling the density of an object sounded interesting but seeing it with her own eyes,… simply impressive. . She knew that this was only one of the unique powers among the hundreds in Hyakuji. Rein moved closer to the very tree that Robert had taken the bark from. He started sniffing the trunk of the tree and then glanced at the stick figure on Robert’s hand. “Indeed Rein, it surely is interesting.” Kaze said, eyeing the same stick figure. “So Robert…you can alter the density of anything you touch….does that include, let’s say, humans or animals?” She gave a shy smile, hoping he wouldn’t mind her asking questions about his powers. She didn’t intend to snoop around other people’s business…it’s just that she is one curious cat. Edited by Mizuki, Dec 26 2010, 11:12 AM.

He smiled as she applauded, appreciative of the positive response. He tossed the wood figure away, done making his little demonstration. He assumed that Kaze was probably one of his fellow students at Hyakuji, which explained why she hadn't been surprised to see another person displaying inhuman abilities. He listened as she asked about altering people and animals, her shy smile being rather endearing. He shook his head slightly, "Its possible, but I almost never do it because of the costs involved. Whenever I try to alter something complex and alive, like humans or animals, I can only create a very small change, and it consumes a ton of energy. I did it to myself once, and I was bedridden for a week." He reached up and pulled a loose hair from his head and held it between his fingers. It suddenly went rigid, now about as hard as a sewing needle. "That's about all I can do to anything involving my own body." It was a bit of a shame, really. He would have been able to do plenty of things if he could alter his own body. Then again, there would be plenty of things that could go wrong as well, so it had an upside too. |

Kaze kept silent, feeling a little bit of tension in the air as Robert spoke of limitations to his own powers. Like him, she and Rein also had their own restrictions in the use of their abilities. She has a lot of things to learn in order to become the best hunter she hopes to be. First thing is, not getting caught in her own freakin’ traps! Rein….well…he was stuck to coping in being a wolf…..for now. “Well I think your skills are pretty impressive despite the limitations.” She finally responded, hoping to ease the tension around them. “Don’t worry, everyone has their own weaknesses.” Rein also couldn’t help but bark, speaking up in support. The huntress smiled, placing a hand on her wolf’s head. “Rein’s right. We will all improve in time. That’s why we train everyday right?” It was true. The most powerful of warriors didn’t start out strong. They had to endure lots of trials and training to get to where they are now. Kaze believed that all limits and weaknesses can be overcome as long as you have the will to surpass them. |

Robert smiled as she gave him her encouragement. He appreciated the kind words, though he wasn't that concerned about not being able to use his powers on himself or others. He could hardly imagine the things that could go wrong with an ability like that. Still, the fact that she was so eager to give him encouragement was rather touching in a way. "Yeah, you're right. We keep trying to get stronger so we can improve ourselves and push ourselves as far as we can. We all have our own motivations, but in the end we all just want to be stronger." He grinned and took his knotted pencil back from her, making it rubbery again and unknotting it. It snapped back to its normal shape like a rubber band, then changed back to its normal wooden density. He slipped it up the sleeve of his jacket. "So, Kaze, I take it y'all are here in Hyakuji 'cause you're attending the high school. Am I right?" There was little doubt that was why she was here. Especially considering her overall appearance. |

"Yeah, I'm a third year student at the school." She replied as she leaned her back against her wolf. Rein just stood still, taking it as a usual thing. "I'm a student there during class hours and a hunter afterwards." She added, giving a playful wink. She enjoyed classes in Hyakuji because they were so different and odd from normal classes. The challenges she faced from her different subjects thrilled her and being the competitive person that she is, she kept wanting more. "I'm also gonna take a guess that you are a fellow student from school?" She smiled, almost sure that her guess was right. |

Robert nodded. "Sure am, though I'm only in my first year." He was still getting acclimated to living in another country, and on top of that, living in a city that was mostly populated by super-powered high-schoolers. Though all things considered, it certainly helped to make life more interesting. "I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that you are a hunter, you do sorta give off that kinda impression, with your clothes and the bow and all. I used to hunt with my dad from time to time, though we never used bows." He even had a nice six-point up on the wall back home from one of those hunting trips. Thinking back, he wished he had gotten to do it a little more often. "So what's your class schedule like? We may have some classes together." It would be nice to have a familiar face to look for around the school. It would make the whole transition a bit more enjoyable. |

"Nice." Kaze replied, grinning upon hearing that Robert used to hunt before. A good hunt was always thrilling and also, fullfulling in a way. "Maybe if you'll have the time again, you can join us for a good hunt. The more the challenge, the better." Come to think of it, with the skills that Robert had, it would be really cool to see them in real action. "So what's your class schedule like? We may have some classes together." "I have...um...supernatural studies under Tsukasa-sensei, martial arts under Grand master Yun, music with Lavender-sensei and uh.... Homeroom under...hmmm...I always forget her name..." She turned to Rein. He barked, reminding her,as always, of the particular instructor. "Right! Homeroom under Alyssa-sensei. Do we have any classes in common?" She continued, facing Robert once again. |

He nodded in agreement. He started wondering if they had any deer in Japan, and whether they tasted as good as the one's back home. He turned his attention back to Kaze as she started listing off her classes. He was a little disappointed when it seemed like she didn't have any classes with him, until she was reminded of what her homeroom teacher's name was. "Well it looks we at least share the same homeroom. I'm in hers too." He would have liked to have been in more classes now that there was someone he could talk to, but he would have to settle for the homeroom and maybe getting together for lunch. He was about to mention getting together during lunch time when a strong gust of icy wind blew by, sending a chill through Robert. It was then that he realized that the sun was already below the horizon. "Whoa, looks like its getting a bit late. We should probably start heading back into town. Wanna come along?" he asked, hoping to hang out with her a little longer. |
