The late-afternoon sun didn't help much in warming the people walking around the various stores and apartment complexes. This included Robert McCursky, who happened to be doing some window shopping and people watching as he wandered through the suburban part of Hyakuji. He had been doing this since he got to Hyakuji, trying to get familiar with the area that had become his new home. He still had a lot of the city to explore, but it was enough that he knew where at least a few interesting places were. It helped ease the culture shock a bit as well. Pulling his black wool coat up a bit, he stopped at a bench to give his feet a rest. He watched as people walked by as part of their daily routine. He was glad for the time off from school the weekend had given him and enjoyed having all so much free time. The one downside was that he still hadn't really gotten to know anyone at Hyakuji. Being a foreigner and a new student made things a little difficult. He just hadn't been able to find anyone he could just strike up a conversation with. He sighed slightly and leaned back on the bench. "Guess I'll just have to try harder." he muttered to himself. |

Mike, with his mouth hidden underneath his long scarf wrapped many times around his neck and unassuming demeanor, hadn't appeared to acknowledge Robert. As that guy sat down, Mike just kept on gazing frontwards.... beyond all the people passing by it seemed. The head of the tall guy sharing the bench with him bobbed once as he exhaled quietly, as though he had only been slightly amused by the remark. His hands were stuffed deep in his pockets, making him hunch over and appear much older than he really was. So now all he needed was a receding hairline and to switch to bi-focal lenses then maybe these young kids would leave him alone. "Ch-yeh." Mike said through a laugh, letting the scarf fall off his mouth to down below his chin..... And waited. Usually by now Fuu would have picked up the conversation for him. Picked it up, took it out to show it a good time and then have it back before 11pm was more like it actually. Maybe he should just go back to just staring at strangers until they started talking... that sometimes worked. Edited by bambi, Dec 19 2010, 03:14 AM.

Robert was slightly startled when he heard a muffled chuckle next to him as well as an affirmative response to his comment. He looked next to him and wondered how he hadn't noticed him. The person sharing the bench was hunched over, but it was still easy to tell he was very, very tall. The length of his legs was a dead giveaway. While Robert had no idea who the guy was, he was just slightly pissed that the guy was so much taller than him, even sitting down. "So, do you usually respond to people when they talk to themselves?" he quipped, a hint of a southern accent in his voice. It had been odd hearing him responding to what had been mainly said for himself, especially since it had been a rather general statement to begin with. He glanced to his left at the guy sharing the bench with him. Aside from his obvious height, he was rather plain in his appearance, explaining a little why Robert hadn't noticed him before. He just didn't have much presence. |

Robert's wisecrack suddenly had Mike pinning him as a foreigner to Japan as well, and if he could smile a bulky mouthed grin without activating a dangerous force-field, he would have. "I try not to..." He answered truthfully, leaning back and resting his ankle up on his knee. There were a lot of things he tried not to do, such as making friends or forming relationships or saying words with the letter 's' in them. After a while he could tell the other guy was looking slightly irritated by something, but just didn't know why. Maybe he had a rough day. Maybe there was a pebble in his shoe. Could have been anything but Mike didn't care enough to ask really. He just sighed, staring down at his own loafers while he reflected on their current situation. Yup. Just two lonely men.... nothing to do with themselves but share a bench together. That freaked him out just enough for him to turn to the other fella and say, "Alright. Wanna meet chicks?" just a little bit frantically. Edited by bambi, Dec 19 2010, 04:08 AM.

Robert let out a short laugh at that response. Seems this wasn't the first time he had done this after all. If nothing else he was honest about it, though he seemed to clam up again as soon as he finished answering, seemingly content to stare at his own feet for the time being. Thus an awkward silence was born. Robert began feeling the slight pressure social obligation. This was the part where he was supposed to say something back, preferably something witty/clever. Unfortunately, getting such a short response from his fellow benchwarmer tended to limit his response options a fair bit. He got to the point where he just needed to say something or just get up and leave when his companion in people-watching rather hastily asked if he wanted go meet some girls. He sounded a bit frantic, as if he were feeling just as weird as Robert. He looked at him for a few moments, thinking over his options, then shrugged. "Works for me." he said, and stood up. "Lead the way." |

Should have just ditched him on the bench... Outwardly, Mike didn't seem the slightest bit bothered. As a matter of fact, he didn't seem the slightest bit anything at all! Just a vague neutral expression with nothing behind the eyes, and a mouthgaurd sitting on his gums. He looked away from the kid, and then back to the kid, and then away again, as though trying to consider if there were any last options. But no, this was just going to be jarring and awkward all the way. Mike patted his leg and finally stood up, not waiting up for him. He was usually a very perceptive fellow and had noted that the guy was at least a foot and a half shorter than him, but then again, Mike was 'that guy' who had to bend down to get under doorways at school so who was the weird one there really? "Ah.. Just..." Were the most words he said, while they passed a few shops. "Don't laugh when you see them." |

The guy seemed rather conflicted at first, perhaps regretting his sudden suggestion to go hook up with some girls. It made Robert wonder why he brought it up in the first place if he was going to immediately regret it. Oh well, either way, it looked like they were stuck with each other. Robert decided it would be better if this didn't become the most awkward afternoon of his life. As his new friend stood, that hint of irritation passed through Robert, but he let it go, not letting the guy's vertical superiority bother him. He followed him as they headed down the sidewalk, and was surprised when he spoke, asking him not to laugh. So it seemed he already had some particular girls in mind for this excursion. Robert hoped he'd be able to break the ice a bit with his response. "Not a chance, thats not really my style." He moved up next to him and held his hand to shake. "Name's Robert McCursky, Alabama born and bred, pleasure to meet'cha!" |

Mike came to a halt, turning sideways and reaching out to shake his hand out of politeness. "... Nice to meet you too." He said, sounding like a creepy psychopath more than anything. Despite having heard it straight from the guy's mouth, he didn't not choose to speak English, instead, carrying on in accented Japanese. "I'm Mike, fourth year." It seemed like Robert's timing was spot on, because they didn't have to move a step further when Mike looked up and saw they were standing right across from quaint little shop called 'Otaku Kingdom.' Well this is where she said she'd be. Stuffing his hands in his pockets as he felt the winter air nip at them, he realized how that sort of body language could give somebody the wrong idea. He pulled his hands out, rubbing them against each other as he continued to gaze intensely through the shop window at a couple of girls in fancy costumes, flittering about the store like the giddy school girls they were. He didn't say a word to Robert, who could leave at any moment now if he wanted to. Mike was just too much of a wallflower to say anything. Minutes would pass by in silence if Robert let them, and Mike was unmoving anymore, hands in his pockets and the slow rise and fall of his chest as he watched those young girls... like a stalker! |

He shook his hand as he introduced himself. Then the silence returned. Robert couldn't help but feel like Mike was a a bit of a stick in the mud. He hardly said anything and had the same glum look on his face the entire time. They walked a little then stopped in front of a store with windows full of anime and game character figurines, as well as various posters for anime. The sign said 'Otaku Kingdom' and there appeared to be a cluster of girls on there, all dressed in cosplay. And he just stood there staring through the window, seeming to have forgotten about Robert completely, and not appearing to be making any move to go inside where the girls were. Robert looked at him quizzically for a moment before smacking him in the back. "Come on Shaq-senpai, its time to get in there and meet some girls. Staring at them isn't gonna get us anywhere." He grabbed the end of Mike's scarf and started dragging him towards the door. "You sir, need to lighten up a bit." With that he walked inside with Mike in tow. "Good afternoon everyone!" he said, in an uncharacteristically cheerful tone. |

"Bad idea...." Mike warned, keeping in tow with the energetic fellow. ~*~ It was a quiet time of day now, with the store just about ready to close up. The store owner was in and out, and right now he didn't appear to be in. One of the girls seemed surprised by the appearance of Robert and Mike, as though she wasn't expecting more people to drop by, but selling manga and anime merchandise must have been a very profitable business after all! Mike watched over behind Robert as Cure Blossom finished placing her load of novels on the lowest shelf and sprung up to greet them with a cheerful, "WELCOME TO OTAK-- KUU-- EHHHH?" It was impossible to see Mike's eyes behind his glasses from the glare of the lights, but he seemed to be shaken by Fuu's appearance. He would be even more shocked when Fuu pushed passed the shorter guy, pressing her puffy sleeves against Robert as she tried to force the guy behind him out the store, "So-so-so-so-sorry its nothing personal!" She kept saying to the southerner as Mike snagged Robert by the scruff of his collar and they backtracked together. That didn't look very comfortable, but in Mike's mind that would even the score from the slap on the back earlier. "And you brought a guy too!?!" She pouted at the pair and put both her hands on her hips, "I know you're not here to buy stuff so just leave, ya!!" |

Robert marched into the store, ready to be as charming as he knew how to be, or failing that, at least be friendly. He ignored the warning Mike gave him, thinking he was just getting cold feet. Needless the say, the reaction he got was not exactly what he was expecting. Before one of the girls had even finished greeting them, she went all bug-eyed and rushed right past him towards Mike and began shoving him out of the store. Unfortunately, it seemed Mike was taking him with him. Robertlet out a gagging sound as he was unceremoniously dragged out of the store by the guy he had just dragged into it. It seemed that Mike knew the girl that had pushed him outside, as she had immediately began reprimanding him. Robert looked her over briefly before looking between the two of them. "Well then, I take it you two know each other?" he said once the girl in cosplay finished speaking. |

"Know him?" Fuu repeated in a dimwitted manner before facing Robert with her knuckles resting into her flower petaled hip. "I'm just about the only person who does, eheh!" Standing at the store's entrance, Fuu turned over her shoulder and waved to the other girls, rotating her hand back and forth and holding up all her fingers, signaling she would be back in about 5. "You... didn't say you worked here..." Mike continued to back track, slowing down until he was able to slide in behind them into the back of the group as they walked down the street together. "Don't get used to it cause... It's only for a day, ya!! Kim-chan really badly wanted some German icecream the store owner was eating." She explained, seemingly unaware of how strange she looked, standing out in the street in that childish costume. "And don't think I'm going to let you bring anymore of your guypals into the group. It'll throw off our guy to girl ratio." Mike didn't bother arguing with Fuu. For someone with brick for brains like her, he really didn't see the point. "That's okay." He said in a steely voice. "Robert and I, we really didn't come to see you." Something about what he just said seemed to struck a nerve in Fuu, that made her change her face to look like the calm before the storm, like the cutie had just been broken.......... She turned her sights to Robert, with her voice sweet as ever but her intentions just a bit ... off. "Is this true Robert-kun?" |

Robert shut his mouth after that, lest he get dragged into the verbal beating Mike was receiving. It was a little bit painful to listen to, especially since Mike made just about zero effort to defend himself. Heck, he barely said anything at all. As they walked, Robert felt a slight hint of disappointment when the girl told Mike not to bring in any more guys to this group of theirs. That likely meant he was out of luck. Mike's last little comment made Robert want to facepalm and smack him upside the head at the same time. He felt the urge to get the hell out of there as soon as he saw the girl stiffen slightly, and her face turn completely calm. He had seen that look. His mom had always made it whenever his dad had put his foot in his mouth, and it never ended well. Robert felt like there was an invisible gun pointed to his head when she turned to him with that serene look and asked him if that was true. He made an effort not to swallow noticeably. "Well I don't know if I can speak for Mike here. He just mentioned meeting some people nearby and I tagged along, thats all." No way he was saying 'to meet cute girls.' He wasn't that stupid. "Though I'm glad I did after meeting a pretty girl like you." He knew that remark would either be what saved him, or what killed him. He really hoped it was the former of the two. |
