The Middleman (stubborn, yet relaxed)
|
"I hate this time of year." Shad mumbled, getting out a sack of free bread crumbs that he acquired from a bread shop by the mall. Everyone on the street was always rushing, smiling and most of the time caroling the same old songs over and over again. Trees, one of the most potent sources of mana, were chopped down and put on display with lights and ornaments, only to be throw away like cheap scrap the next month once it begins to welt. Of course, he had already paid his annual tribute to the animals since they could not return anything back. Nuts for the squirrels, bread crumbs for the birds, fruits and cheese for mice, a few knocked over trash cans filled with day old food for foxes/raccoons/rats/various mammals and fresh plants for the deer and other herbivores in the park. Animals he could be friends with during this time of the year, humans....not so much. "Bah, humbug." He grumbled, chewing some of the leftover bread crusts since once again, he was low on funds. Sitting down on a nearby bunch, he took in the scenery of Hyakuji being overtaken by the spirit of Christmas. And not in a good way, since parents clashed to get the last game console, kids whined over at lines to see Santa (whom Shad noted looked nothing like St. Nicholas), cars zooming all over the roads in a race to get more toys, stores competing with price cuts, and so on. Whatever happened to peace on earth and goodwill to men (and women)? Why are wars still occurring, and crimes being committed during this special month? Granted, Jesus wasn't exactly born specifically on the 25th since no one really knew what happened 2,000 years ago, but still, Shad was deeply disappointed in this holiday. What was there to be happy about for Christmas? No money, nor friends, he didn't even obtain a invite to a party. 'Another Christmas alone, I suppose. I might as well practice making wine at the greenhouse.' He thought, his face completely placid and emotionless as he pondered why Christmas had turned into something for the consumer, instead of those looking for spiritual guidance. 'Come to think of it, does Hyakuji even have a church to pray my respects to God?' He wondered, now staring up at the clouds and praying for Sarah Aoka's safety and protection against the Hellfire Club. |
