The frying pan sizzled as he flipped the fillet, letting it fall on the other uncooked side. The blue flame danced about as the pan slid above the stove. After a few minutes, he flipped the fillet yet again, and poked it with a fork to test its tenderness. Ah, perfect. He slid it onto a plate, joining a collection of golden-brown, half-baked, half-fried french fries. After covering it with a generous amount of lemon butter sauce, he proceeded to set the plate next to another plate of chicken with tarragon cheese sauce. But he's not done yet.

Since he got the kitchen all to himself today, why don't he be a little bit greedy?

Just don't use up all those stuff in the fridge. Fedoraman'll get mad.

"Don't worry, I won't cook more than I can swallow,"

The Willicott Detective Agency was quiet, save for the occasional clanking of the pan and spatula. There was no one here at the moment. Not surprising, given the time. The two usual residents of the office were not present, leaving Seth as the only living human in the entire compound, happily scrounging his way through Jameson's refrigerator, in search of the best ingredients to make the best dinner he would ever had since he came to this city. Although, whether he actually have the permission to ransack the fridge is anyone's guess.

He spotted another potential victim. His mind worked wildly in search of the perfect recipe as his hand grabbed the eggplants.

Aki bumped the tip of her shoe against the stairs of the WDA building, shaking off the frosty dirt as she turned the door handle. One of these days she'd get around to the habit of knocking, but at least Chetri knew her well enough not to try shoot her again. For several reasons. The door took a bit more force, the wood clearly a bit contracted from the cold. "You can all stop wondering what I'm doing, I'm here." She announced, hanging her burgundy top coat on the nearly empty coat rack. Had everyone gone out already? Geeze, that guy was always up to something. Slipping her hands into her pockets, her nose suddenly caught a whiff of something in the air. Well that put an end to that.

Aki had guessed from looking around the place enough times that there was no way they cooked anything that smelled that good. Not to mention the number of times she'd looked inside their fridge. She shuddered to herself at the thought. She walked calmly around the kitchen, popping her head in first and quickly spotting Seth. Aki smiled as soon as she recognized him. She hadn't seen him since the other night and to be honest she'd sorta missed the kid. "Hey there baby grand, what's cookin'?" She said excitedly. Now that she smelled food, Aki realized a meal sounded pretty good right now. You don't notice how little you eat until you cut your food budget to stretch your clothing budget for custom stitching.

"HAUU!!" That was shocking. Really shocking. The building he expected to be empty suddenly had an occupant other than himself. He jumped to about a feet into the air, nearly suffering from a heart attack. No one is supposed to be awake at this time of the night. Why else did he pick this time to 'utilize' the kitchen? Alarmed, he turned around, only to find Aki at the door, clearly interested in his dinner. Well, at least it's better than having Jameson finding his fridge empty in a single night.

"Oh... Aki... It's just you... Really, don't scare me like that,"
He tried to calm down, taking in deep breaths, though his heart is not going to stop anytime soon. Why should it? He had just been ambushed from behind while cooking up dinner. It's not like he's actually prepared for an assassin or something.

Seth.

"Yes?"

You might... want to look down.

Seth looked down at his feet. No not that. Your hand. Oh, then why didn't you say so-

His voice faltered, as he looked at his hand. It was red. Not because of any red colored ingredients he used, but because he had just cut himself. Again. Blood was seeping out slowly from the big slit on his thumb to the cutting board. Then, as though it was his natural reflex, he grabbed the eggplant he was working on and immediately threw it into the dustbin. Sure, it looked like he was wasting food, but he had good reason for this. He took the cutting board to the sink, and washed it with enough soap to last an entire month. "V... V, heal me... Quick...!" He said, almost pleading. The memories from the past flooded into his brain

No can do. You're all out, remember?

What? Ah, right. It's midnight. He hadn't had any lunch or dinner, so he's pretty much famished. Why else would he break into Jameson's kitchen just to get some illegal supper? And as the equation goes, no food, no superpowers.

Just get some band-aids, will ya? Sheesh.

Aki's eyebrow raised ever so slowly, going higher and higher as the scene unfolded before her. She'd never the kid so jumpy in her life, he really did have nerves of glass. Her faces with morbid curiosity as eggplant and kiddo alike were tossed across the kitchen in a panic. With a sigh and a smile she slipped into the kitchen behind him, shaking her head hopeless as she casually slid a small handkerchief from her pocket. With a flourish she flicked it in the air, unfolding the black rag with one hand while the other calmly touched his. With a flourish Aki tied it around his hand and tightened it gently. The handkerchief quickly went about doing its job, efficiently soaking up blood from from the wound.

Aki smiled, giving Seth a pat on the shoulder. "There now, just take it easy will ya? No need to have a heart attack over it. Whatcha makin' anyway? It looks pretty slick and smells great!" She leaned over his shoulder, dipping her nose into the dishes. Of course he'd probably be lost without her and she took the knife from the counter. Aki didn't really know squat about cooking, but Seth was kind of a clumsy guy and how hard could it be? She could probably teach him a thing or two. "So hey, anything I can help you with? I'm pretty hand with a blade!" This was true, just not in this particular context.

Hookay, so now he's got an assistant. And, from the looks of it, she'll be wanting payment for her service in the form of dinner. Well, not that he minded much. Sharing meal with someone makes it taste better. Most of the time. Although, he's slightly worried about the ever so decreasing content of the fridge. Meal for one might not deplete it, but meal for two? Jameson's gonna have to go shopping four times that week.

That said, he was a bit defiant on letting Aki cook. What? She doesn't look like someone who would spend her time in the kitchen. Of course, he could be wrong and she COULD prove herself to be really good at it. V's not having any of it, however.

Hold it there, brat. You're telling me you're gonna let her take over as chef?

"Why not? She said she's good,"

Yes. I, like you, thought she won't be up to it at first. But I, unlike you, still think she won't be up to it. She'll ruin your dinner.

"Quit it, V. If she says she's good, she's good. And I'm not touching anything until this here stops," He raised his arms, positioning the bandaged thumb over his eyes. He hadn't said it, but he's grateful.

Humph. Suit yourself. V said with a huff, and ceased to talk anymore.

Now that that's out of the way, he can relax for a bit as she took over the cooking job. Now, to give her something to do. Not too little, as that would make her feel like he didn't actually trust her. And he trusted her a lot. "Right. First, I'll need the cucumber sliced, fine. Then I'll need the cheese shredded. Parmesan, not Mozzarella. Melt a bowl of chocolate, hard-boil five eggs, then I want eight jalapeno blended together with an onion, pepper, blablablablablblablabla......." He went on, and on, and on, giving instructions and orders non-stop to the supposedly expert chef in front of him.

Aki smiled and nodded confidently, listening to Seth stick up for her to the voice she otherwise couldn't hear. Though she'd never really felt at-odds with V, somehow it seemed like he never really bought into her overconfidence. Well, that was his own problem. Frankly the opinions of mutant superviruses had never really been high on her self-esteem list anyway. She tilted her head a bit, staring at Seth's lightly bleeding finger again. He sure seemed uptight about it, what was the big deal if a little blood got into or something? That seems like something a wise old sage of cooking would offer up as advice anyway. Always put a piece of yourself into your cooking! Only then will the soul of your food resonate with your own! Or something like that.

It wasn't like he had Hep. B or anything either. Slick was way too nice a kid to get involved with something that serious. "Alright, you just sit back and watch me work, kiddo. I've got it all under control." Aki brandished the knife, flipping it once in the air and snatching it by the handle skilfully. "Ah-ha, right. Cucumber..." She said with a smile, snatching up the nearest prickly thing when she realized he was still talking. "Er ch-cheese...chocolate and um..." Her eyes darted around the carving board, trying to keep everything in her head. This was starting to look bad, but she wasn't ready to give up just. "I uh...I think I got it all, I might have to ask you again if I forget though, okay?" Her trademark confidence seemed a bit lax on that one.

Setting the cucumber on the cutting board, she held it down with the full weight of her hand like the head of an enemy pressed again the pavement before raising the knife high into the air. "Liu He Qiang*!" Aki shouted, bringing the knife down hard and slicing at the cucumber like it a charging bear. Pieces flew in several directions, landing on her jacket, Seth's head and in several corners of the kitchen. In what seemed like only the span of a few seconds, the poor vegetable had been reduced to mince. Aki took a deep breath and exhaled slowly before staring down at her handiwork. "So uh, something like that, right?" She said, smiling a bit nervously.

Like I told ya. She can't cook.

Seth picked out some of the cucumber pieces that managed to get stuck on his hair. After a few seconds of bewilderment, he broke into a hearty laugh. Now that's another side of her you don't always see in public. "Ahaha! Wow. That's... quite a skill you got," He turned around facing the sink, trying to stifle his laughter.

Okay, enough laughing. Straightening himself up, he turned back to face her with his hands on his sides. Hey, all this time he had been treated like a kid, so how about being the big man once in a while? "How about a little lesson? Cooking 101, by Seth Rouga. No fee required. All you have to do is listen to what I say. Ah, but first of all, you need an apron. Cooking is usually a messy job,"

He took the knife she was holding on to (while avoiding any contact with his wounded finger), and another intact cucumber from the refrigerator, placing it on the cutting board, ready to be cut. "Our first lesson is the 'Knife'. Every good chef must be proficient with a knife. It's important to remember that power is not always necessary. The trick is to slide the knife. Use the entire length of the edge," Seth then placed the sharp edge of the knife on the cucumber, sliding the blade across while applying minimal downward pressure on the cucumber. In a single stroke, he effortlessly sliced through it.

"See? Clean cut. Now you try it," He threw the knife into the air and caught it by the blade skillfully using his index and middle fingers, handing the handle to Aki. "Cut the cucumber into thin slices. Once that's done we can move over to stew,"

Her nervous smile faded to a bit of a nervous blank stare as he stared at her for a moment with a mixture of confusion and surprise. Evidently he wasn't buying it in the least, but at least he had the courtesy not to la-- oh there it was. Aki's expression fell flat as her eyes lowered to an irritated glower. Her eye twitched slightly, clutching the knife tightly in her hand. To think he had the nerve to laugh at her while she was holding a knife. That was pretty gutsy! Still, there wasn't a lot she could do to save face. She'd made a pretty big idiot of herself, so...he could laugh a little if he really wanted to. Aki blushed slightly, turning away from him and setting the knife back on the counter.

"Alright, so...maybe I might have...overstated my skills here." She said, relegating to speaking out of one side of her mouth out of minor irritation and major embarrassment. So what if she wasn't great at feminine things like that? It seemed like a silly thing feel like this over. Aki just folded her arms at his offer, a tiny smile working it's way over her lips. Until he mentioned the apron. A spare one hung on the wall next to the fridge and she looked at it with a certain mixture of dread and apprehension. "Y-yeah...I guess." She supposed it was better than getting more gunk on her expensive suits, but still... she slowly unbuttoned her jacket, sliding it gently and setting it on the nearest chair.

Aki carefully rolled up the sleeves of her dress shirt and reached for the daunting white apron "I-it's kinda frilly don't you think? And what's up with this size?" She said, tugging at her new accessory. Why the heck would Jameson even have this kind of thing? It seemed to hug her rather snugly in the front, emphasizing her hips and bust with a feminine curve and lace around the edges. Did that guy seriously wear this? It seemed more like something Oliver kept around just in case he wanted to make someone wear it. Taking a deep breath and still tugging at the edges of the apron, Aki stood next to Seth at the cutting board, watching his skillful hands on the cutting board while occasionally stealing a glance at his face. The mixture of focus and joy seemed to make her smile.

It was pretty cool, someone getting so much excitement out of a simple thing like this. It wasn't like a club or a street fight, but it had its own sort of cool. After he sliced it she took a step back as her turned to face her, tossing the knife in the air with a flourish. Aki's expression was a bit nervous, unsure if the kid was really capable of doing something like that safely. Thankfully however, it landed safely in his hands...by the blade. She looked at him with a bit of jealous hostility before snatching the handle out of his hands. "Y'know, for someone who complains a lot about bleeding, you sure do some pretty risky stuff." She said with a bit of an annoyed tone.

Turning back to the cutting board she took a deep breath and grabbed the cucumber, making sure to imitate the way he'd held it before. With a steady hand she held the knife just over the defenseless vegetable and slowly began to press down. Aki turned away just as she did, closing her eyes as the slow sound of slicing eventually gave way to the calm thud of knife against cutting board. Slowly she turned back, half-opening one eye to look. A small, if slightly thick slice lay flat against the cutting board and Aki quickly took up a smile. She bumped her shoulder against Seth's playfully, laughing a little to herself as she cut a few more slices.

"Aha, see I told you I could do it!" She said, setting the knife down and wiping her hands on her apron. "Stew next, huh? I think I can probably handle that." Aki said nonchalantly. She'd already sliced a vegetable, how much harder could making stew be?

"Can you really? Stew's just the easy part. And there's still a whole lot more to cooking than just cutting vegetables," Seth teased her a bit, chuckling slightly as he opened the closet to look for some fettuccine.

~~Time skip~~ (What, you actually expect me to retell the whole morbid cooking story?)

Okay. It really was impossible to turn a rookie into a pro in less than an hour. On the dining table were six different dishes, four of which looked significantly less appealing than the others.

Flashing back a little, ... We're just gonna take the summary as the whole ordeal was a bit... something. He kinda put a little bit too much trust in her to be a fast learner in cooking. It was partly his fault too. He could have given her some demonstrations on how certain things were supposed to be done, but he refused to touch anything with his bleeding hand. And there's not much he could do without his thumb or his other hand. He stared a bit at the... dish... Aki made, unable to give any comment to it.

Of course, even though a dish may LOOK bad, it could still taste good. Trouble is, her dish looked so... something, he really really doubted the possibility that it might actually taste good. His mouth have not spouted anything, his face have not contorted in disgust or something similar, but V could feel the overwhelming apprehension and fear enveloping his entire mind, so much so, it might even leak to the surroundings.

Oh come on. He hadn't even tasted it yet.

Which he dreads.

"Uhm... yeah... okay... since... you're the guest, and I'm supposed to entertain the guest. Since... Yeah," He took a deep breath, attempting to regain his composure and gather some guts. He will wage a war in a few minutes. He needs as much strength as he could get. "Well then! I suppose it's time for us to tuck in. And some work evaluation..." He muttered the last sentence in a small voice, looking at the... whatever it is, in front of him. He picked up the spoon, scooped a mouthful and, after hesitating a little bit, transferred it into his mouth.

...

Hm.

Not bad. In fact, it could even be classified as goo- URP!

Other than the sudden rigidness of his body, he didn't show anything that might be interpreted as 'This tasted horrible,'.

"Eh...hehe, well yeah of course there is! I already knew that though..." Aki mumbled, doing her best to maintain a smile as she scratched the side of her face nervously. Really, how much more could there be? Then again most of the food she ate was cheap, easy to digest and as on-the-fly as it could take her to her next locale.

This probably wasn't a good thing.

~~Time Skip~~ (Insert flaming frying pans and pots boiling over montage here)

Well in all honesty, Aki couldn't recall at time when she'd felt quite this vulnerable before. Maybe it was because she maintained such a groomed and charismatic attitude all the time that when push came to shove her ego was as fragile as a summer watermelon in January. In the end, she'd managed to throw together several dishes but...'thrown-together' seemed like an uncomfortably operative term in this case. Overall, it wasn't much for presentation and there wasn't a chance on the cold side of God's green hell that it tasted much better than it looked. Aki merely sat there, wordlessly staring at her knees at the other end of the table with her hands placed strategically on top of them.

Her expression wasn't so much disheartened as it was slightly startled. For awhile the two of them sat in near silence with Aki only taking the occasional glance upwards to give him a cursory evaluation of his face before looking down. The air seemed thick with an indescribable tension which she couldn't seem to place or shake and each of those prospects frightened her than the last. Finally she took a deep breath and looked up at him, her expression looking much more vulnerable than usual. Aki was suddenly feeling like an idiot compared to him. The guy she condescendingly referred to as 'kiddo' or 'slick' all the time. After today she supposed a bit more respect was in order.

Aki started to smile until he openly decided to try a bit of the monstrosity over-seasoned and tossed together with ingredients that were a mixture of almost raw and completely overcooked. Or at least it seemed that way to her, she really had no idea what she was doing and it could have had any number of things wrong with it. Either or, she hadn't really expected him to actually consider trying it. "G-geeze you don't really have to try that stuff, there's no way it's good for you!" Aki suddenly protested as he lifted the spoon to his mouth. For some reason, a part of her was really hoping some sort of lucky charm had fallen into the broth at some point and made it miraculously delicious. Some part of her was scared he was going to hate it.

That part of her made her chest tighten in anticipation. "So uh...h-how is it?" Aki asked weakly.

She was looking at him with anticipation, as all beginner chefs would when their teachers took a stab at their 'masterpiece', expecting a "Very good!" coming out fom their mentor's mouth. In this case, however, this is no masterpiece. And it certainly does not deserve a compliment.

In one area anyway.

Coming to a decision, Seth pulled wrenched the spoon out from his mouth, and without any warning, slammed it flat on the table. He then took he plate of doom in front of him and shoved the entire content down his throat, resisting the unorthodox taste of fish, dishwashing soap and a hell lot of oil alike. But he's not done yet. Setting the plate down hard, he grabbed another one of her dish and swallowed he whole thing in one go. He did the same with the other two nightmare dish, positively denying the tug from the Grim Reaper.

After swallowing the last drop of her 'stew', he slammed down the plate on the table, giving a huge sigh of relief after enduring the glutton torture without dying. There was a slight pause as he felt around for his numb tongue. Now. His comment?

"It was horrible. You mixed up salt and sugar, you put in waaaay too much butter, the flour wasn't kneaded properly, the meat was undercooked, the stew tasted too plain, if not downright bitter, and I think I could taste some soap. Overall, I'll give you zero for skills,"

He decided that being honest was the best thing to do. She has a long way to go. Let's just hope her expectations weren't too high.

"Although," He continued after a slight pause. "You did try your best to impress. The best of dishes are always the ones made with effort and determination. I can see fom before, you're trying very hard. And I like those who work hard. So.... I suppose, full marks for effort," He said, giving a reassuring smile. "Of course, effort alone isn't going to cut it. You'll be needing much more than that to be able to make one of these," He teased he yet again, twirling his fingers over one of his dishes.

For awhile her mouth hung open in nervous expectation. Seth didn't seem to make a move as if slowly evaluating her work over from teeth to gums to tongue. After a moment he tore his spoon from his mouth as if to suck every last bit of food from its shiny silver surface and slammed it on the table. To Aki, he seemed more like someone who'd have a bit more etiquette than she usually did at the dinner table but this seemed like a good thing. She didn't usually scarf down a meal, silverware and all unless it was really something worth talking about. Even more shocking still was when he grabbed the entire plate by its haunches and swallowed it like a beef basted keg stand. He didn't have to say a word, Aki knew she'd done it.

Where uncertainty and anxiety had thought themselves to prevail, she'd managed to conjure up a smörgåsbord so irresistible he was eating it like a starving feral pig in a pen filled with triad prisoners. Aki took a deep breath and laid back in her chair, exhaling thankfully as she swung her leg over her knee, giving Seth (face still buried in dinnerware) a confident smile and the slightest glimmer of total victory in her eyes. After a moment he tossed down the last plate like a judge's gavel. He seemed to wait for a moment as if taking in the enormity of what he'd just accomplished and Aki looked off in another direction for a moment as if to say 'who, me?'.

She placed a cheery fingernail in her mouth, attempting to chew on the end of a perfectly manicured tip until he opened his mouth again. One by one the list went on and the Chinese girl's eyes slowly widened under the burden of a single realization. Aki's dishes were just awful! Of course that should have been relatively clear to anyway with two eyes and a brain stem so why the hell had he gone and eaten it all like it was his mother's Thanksgiving spiral ham?? Aki thought she might have bitten off the end of her fingernail as she stared menacingly in Seth's direction. With each word her disposition seemed to grow more hostile until she looked ready to flip the table over, jump up and strangle him.

"Y-you!" She said, standing up suddenly and pounding her palms on the table. Her eyes were ablaze as an embarrassing scarlet hue adorned her cheeks, her arms trembling a bit from militant, self-righteous fury. "You're going to sit here and eat like a pig then tell me it was awful?? And then you're going to act like you're so much better than me?!" Aki began rolling up one sleeve of her dress shirt and lifted her leg to pound one foot on the table. She really might just jump over and strangle him right now the little punk! "Where the hell do you get off, huh??" It seemed almost comical coming from someone in a tight, frilly apron but it was difficult to tell if she was really serious or not.

"HAUU!!!" Seth stumbled backwards in his chair and crashed down to the floor. Okay, so being honest was NOT the best decision after all. He quickly stood back up, feeling quite vulnerable on the ground. Luckily there's no knife around this time. Oh, but there's forks on the table. Well, he can worry about flying silverware later. For now, he needs to find some way to get her to calm down before she kills him.

"Well, I can't just throw it away since you made it for me!"
He said loudly, trying to make himself heard over her overpowering voice. That fact was kinda true in his opinion. She did help him with his dinner. And she did try her best. To waste all those effort into the drain felt... wrong. Of course, he's not sure how much anything is gonna help now. At least he learned a valuable lesson. Never piss off Aki.

I got some fuel now. Want some steel bones, just in case?

Aki flicked her tongue behind her teeth, her trembling slowing down slightly as he fell backwards in his chair like a startled cat. Suddenly he wasn't so tough now that it was about fighting instead of cooking! But...of course she was a better fighter than he was, that wasn't really in question. He was the one who'd offered to help her learn to cook, even knowing she wasn't actually that good. Aki looked down at him on the ground, feeling a bit like she might have been acting a little immature by threatening to beat him to death. So maybe she wasn't that great of a cook, why did she even feel the need to be better than him at anything anyway? Aki never acted that way around the detective or Robyn, but she'd nearly beat Seth's head in twice now. What the heck was it about him that bothered her so freakin' much?

Seth shouted out suddenly and his words made a hot sensation run suddenly up Aki's spine. Made it for him? That's ridiculous, she'd made it because...well because...Well, okay maybe it was for him. That still didn't help her explain why she... oh. OH! ...Oooooh. Oh no. No no no. Definitely not. She struck that thought from her mind without hesitation and quickly put her foot back on floor. Aki's sleeve slid back down, lightly wrinkled as she folded her arms, looking slightly less irritated and more confused with a subtle blush that didn't seem to fade. Now she'd gone and royally futz'd things up. "G-geeze, if I'd known you were going to back down like that I wouldn't have been so rough about it. I didn't meant to scare you like that...I'm...Uh, I'm sorry."

Aki avoided looking at him and slowly sat back in the chair. "I may have overreacted." she said slowly. Why did this guy have to be so frustrating?

Hey. It worked. Whatever it was that he did, it seemed to work. His heartbeat slowed down as she returned her feet back to where it was supposed to be, which is on the floor and NOT on the table. He placed his hand on his waist and scratched his head, avoided looking at her. Dear, dear. "Well... It's alright, I guess," It was kinda weird to see the usually-cool headed person like her blow up like that. Was it something he said? Well, he did act a bit obnoxious back then. But then again, V's even more obnoxious than he is. Was it possible it was because it's him?

Seth spirit took a slight tumble. Is it possible she only acted that way because she doesn't like him?

Okay, scratch that. A huge tumble.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case.
V said in his head, snickering slightly, clearly thinking he knows more than Seth does.

Since she finally calmed down a little, he supposed it's safe to pick up the overturned chair and sit at the table. Though he's still wary of any flying forks, he held back from looking at her. What else do you expect? He's not an expert in handling the rapid change in atmosphere like this. ... "The food's getting cold," He said, braving a glance at her.
