He would only be gone for awhile, he said, To get replacements for the alarms and locks she'd disabled the night prior. Until then, she was asked to merely wait there to avoid getting into trouble in the meanwhile. It was alot like how she usually spent her time in anycase, standing down and waiting for mission orders. Except those other times, she'd been waiting in a reasonably secure place, with others like her, and they were all armed with guns. It made for a sense of security rarely found elsewhere.

Here however, she was all alone, potentially being hunted by the organisation she'd just left, probably by people she knew and whose faces and abilities she would recognise behind their masks, and armed only with her revolver and a knife, as well as whatever else was in the building she could use. It was alot to take in in the abstract, but she'd already known all this when she decided she no longer wanted to be a part of it. It didn't make it any easier though.

And so she sat there quietly in a room, almost looking to be asleep, but really just chimped down like she always was while she waited. Just pretending to be asleep, eyes closed, with her body powered down, tension sapped strength even when the muscles were idle, and thus the defence against it was to simply power down your body and try to stay alert. She was smart and professional enough to know stress would come in it's own time, and she didn't have to invite it early for no reason.

Maybe she didn't really have a good reason to coming over. The time of the day was always the weirdest time to plan a pop-in. It wasn't exactly night yet, but the day wasn't young either and moreover he might not even be home. Calling the office hadn't worked either since the phones seemed to be down preventing her from even leaving a message. Honestly, it might have been something that could have waited, but Aki was curious to see how a gentlemen like that spent his evenings. The detective just a fascinating kind of guy. The young girl's patent leather shoes crunched against the grass as she approached the door through the front lawn.

Disappointingly, it looked like the lights were out already. Did he really sleep this early like some old man? It seemed a lot more likely he'd simply gone out for the night like the secret party animal Aki so suspected he was. Still, it was a little disappointing to leave completely empty handed. Reaching the door she raised a casual fist to knock but stopped just before contact. Something felt off. Aki's hand slowly lowered to the doorknob, turning it as slowly as she could. Without resistance the door opened. The door wasn't just unlocked, it was completely busted. Not the common burglary tool-kit kind of thing either. It was fairly clean and anyone else might have missed it.

The phones had been out of service too. No lights, no locks, no phones? That seemed a little too suspicious. Those guys who'd been assassinating Jameson's clients...maybe they'd come to finish the job? Aki swallowed hard, attempting to keep her cool. There was no sense jumping to conclusions and even running with the idea meant keeping a level head. Running in like that could only get her killed. Stealthily, Aki pressed a pair of fingers on the door, allowing it to swing lightly and slowly. She only opened it just far enough for her to slip through before closing it just short of the catch. Not even a clicking sound.

She took a few silent steps into the building, her eyes darting around quickly. It was sort of weird, being here alone and without Jameson knowing about it. She'd sure look like an idiot if this turned out to be nothing but it was hard to look for signs of a struggle when it already looked this messy to begin with...

Her eyes shot open. Chetri didn't necessarily understand why, however her instincts seemed to be telling her to stay alert. There wasn't (yet) a visible reason to, but having such a reason in her case would have alleviated the need to. A faint, distant noise caused her eyes to drift to the side. It sounded like the faint creak of the door.

Posted Image

For a moment, she wondered if Jameson had returned, but dismissed it. No, he would have made alot more noise than that. Perhaps someone else? It was normally too early to check on the status of a hit, but the possibility could not be discounted. Paranoid as it might have been, even paranoids had enemies.

Based on that, she was now alone in the building with an unknown number of persons with a motive she couldn't discern from here. The fact the building was so quiet at the moment worked to her advantage. She'd spent the time acclimating to the sound, and that made it much easier to determine where it was coming from, and possibly what it was. The girl's eyes shifted from their hazel grey into a pale amber as her mind got to work.

The sound came from the front door. From that I can determine where they are and how they move.

Her training immediately reasserted itself, and she picked up her revolver from the table next to her, rising to her feet.

Navigating was...difficult, to say the least. The office remained nearly pitch black save for the odd swathe of fading daylight that slipped through the very bottoms of the windows. Stepping daintily around desks, Aki observed things didn't look much different than they had the last time she'd been here. Of course it seemed weird to think she'd find him at his desk at this hour, but he seemed the type to always be sitting there, prepared for company. That was just the cool kind of guy he was. The only other place that really left to check though was the bedrooms. The detective's private place of refuge. They'd have to be a pretty sick group of people to attack a man in such a vulnerable place.

But those were just the kinds of people Aki knew would bump off satisfied customers for kicks. Stepping out of the offices, she stared up into the abyssal stairwell climbing to the private rooms upstairs. It seemed almost perverse to conceive going someplace like that without his permission. Not that such a thing would have stopped her, but her reasons were far less questionable in this case. Aki's meal ticket could be kidnapped, or worse by now. One by one she climbed each step with the utmost care, careful to make as little sound as possible. This was all beginning to feel a little too familiar.

Aki was starting to feel like a child again. Back in those days, running swiftly through the night, checking out where grown men couldn't or were too valuable to. That was the kind of job given to an orphan like her. But these weren't the streets and alleys of China anymore and she could only hope she was not too late. Just a few more stairs...hang on, Jameson..

"Stop there, and remain where you are." a voice called out calmly behind Aki, shortly after she cleared the stairs.

In the hallway behind her, stood a fairly unremarkable young girl with greyish hair and a Chinese dress, aiming a revolver at her. It would be obvious enough looking down the barrel that all 6 chambers were loaded.

Posted Image
Her finger was on the trigger, the weapon was aimed at Aki's back, at around chest level.

It had been easy enough for Chetri to determine there was only one person by the sound of the footsteps. They were fairly quiet, but they stood out too much in the silence of the building. Triangulating her positions was a fairly simple task when she worked out the vectors involved, and from there it was merely using her skills to sneak around behind the target. That part was almost child's play.

"Turn around slowly, and keep your hands where they can be seen easily." she told the girl, with all the emotion and excitement of a statue.

"Well well, looks like you got the drop on me first." Aki said slowly sliding her hands into her pockets, but otherwise remaining motionless. Despite her calm demeanor, she was now more worried than ever. She didn't know the extent of the detective's abilities (or anything at all about them for that matter) but she was pretty confident he could handle himself. The fact that someone was still here though did not reinforce that confidence. The voice belonged to a young girl, no doubt with a loaded weapon pointed at her. The killer's MO suggested as much and Aki wasn't stupid enough to risk her life just to find that out.

The voice was calm, collected. Professional. She didn't know this person was, but if breaking into her boss' office didn't piss her off enough, ordering her around with a gun would certainly get the job done. Aki slowly turned around, taking her hands politely back out of their pockets with her palms open. Her eyebrow upturned slowly as the young girl came into view. Well this was just silly. The girl couldn't have been much further from her own age, but her demeanor was well as the loaded .357 currently aimed at her chest suggested a bit of maturity nonetheless. This was still completely ridiculous.

"I'm only going to say this once, Sheba..." Aki said, staring unblinkingly into the girl's eyes with a smirk across her face. "So you'd better listen and you'd better listen good." This was always the fun part. "Chi." Aki's aura suddenly took on an earthy wheat-colored glow, the stairs beneath her groaning loudly in protest at the sudden extra weight. At the same time, she dropped her hands, stomping her feet into the stairs to solidify her stance and immediately sending a forceful palm straight for the young girl's sternum.

She wanted to give this person a chance to give up quietly, but the sudden rush towards her ended that. The weight and acceleration was actually surprising. even though she could see it, it was hard to believe such a ridiculous thing was happening in front of her, but she didn't let that stop her from acting. Training was firmly in control now, and what little personality or conscience she had took a backburner to years upon years of conditioning.

She extended the weapon forward out of reflex as she stepped out of the way, and matched the weapon's bearing to where her target's center of mass would go.. She didn't even need the sights. Knowing the approach of her opponent and the characteristics of the cartridge, she simply pointed it where she knew it would go, pulled the trigger cleanly.

The muzzle jumped up, the bright flash and loud report filling the dimly lit hallway as the lead-copper projectile exited the barrel at 500m/s!

Aki's fist sailed effortlessly through the air with intense force, only to swish by its target unharmed. Her reaction time was pretty amazing, not least of all including the sound of the gun going off the moment she'd even managed to get the attack off. The bullet impacted her chest hard and Aki grunted painfully, unwilling to give up her stance as her eyes opened wide. She clenched her teeth in minor agony, switching up her palm thrust to an elbow strike, attempting to pin the girl against the wall beside her. She needed to wrap this up quick, if there was only one of them then it was likely the rest had left. There was no way they'd use one person to take down a target like Jameson.

It was fairly likely this girl was just left behind to take care of anyone who might stumble upon the scene like herself. She'd seen it a million times. Aki would beat some answers out of her then quickly begin catching up to whomever had done...whatever they'd don here. She was still pretty sure Jameson was in danger! "You better not shoot me again you little futz or I won't leave anything but your mouth intact!" Aki shouted as her already drawn arm shifted into its elbow strike. Technically that was the only part she needed, brain not withstanding. These people never thought twice about what they did or who they did it too. A brain like that was pretty useless.

[Edit: BGM added for extra dramatic guns versus fist action!

~Tema IV~

It was about faster than a human could consciously think. She could already see the adjustment and buildup of force, and Chetri's body reacted automatically. She allowed herself to fall to the side, her legs suddenly pushing against to thrust her away from the elbow, which smashed viciously into the wall. The darkness prevented her from clearly seeing the damage to the wall, but the sudden appearance of vectors from fragments and debris told her that she couldn't afford to take a hit from such a monster.

She rolled as she hit the ground, righting herself quickly down onto a knee. The fact this person was still standing after a direct hit was impressive, but she didn't have time to consciously admire such a thing, nor did she really think in such terms. Her hands came up again, this time with both hands steadying the revolver as she again aimed for the center of mass, squeezing the trigger twice more. The air was again interrupted by the brilliant flash of gunfire.

Well okay, the sunnuvabitch was pretty quick Aki had to grant her that. With a devastating crunch, her elbow shot through the drywall, cracking several planks in the process. With no time to spare she attempted to free her arm from the wall, making it a nice large hole as the force gouged out another section of drywall. Of course, Aki didn't have nearly enough time to react as the girl feel back into a counter-attack. She was definitely at a range disadvantage as long she insisted on throwing that gun around. It would be a helluva lot easier once she ran out of ammo. A succession of two shots rang out practically as one, the impacts nearly indistinguishable as they laid into Aki's sternum.

The impacts rattled her hard, jarring her entire body as if she'd just been hit by a truck. Aki quickly collapsed to the ground, rolling down the bottom few stairs as she cursed loudly in pain. Taking a deep breath, she rolled into a running stance, stumbling at bit as she laid an angry gaze on the assassin. Her hand rested over the blood soaking through her undershirt If she had any idea how difficult it was to obtain a suit like this in small Japanese city like Hyakuji she probably wouldn't be so goddamn quick to shoot holes in it! Kids today had no respect. Aki turned her bull-charge into a leaping two-kick. The first one aimed at her chest and the other going for her head.

That she wasn't down after 3 hits was bothersome, especially considering where she'd been shot. A normal human would have been long dead. There wasn't however, time for a followup shot as her opponent went right back towards her in a rapid charge and launched into a kick. She simply planned to jump back, loosing her footing to roll with the blow and...

Guh!

It was a shock how hard it hit even with the impact spread out over a long impulse. Chetri felt the air knocked out her lungs from the force of the blow.

The first blow knocked her back, and her head reflexively snapped out of the way of the second kick as she tumbled back, falling into a roll and again stopping on her knees, wheezing and coughing lightly as she stopped to restabilise her breathing.

Aki smirked. Bingo. She felt her patent leather shoe impact hard against the invader's chest, bringing the girl's crushing weight and increased density to bear on her relatively fragile target. Still, her reflexes kept her out of the way of the serious injury a head-shot might have caused. At least she appeared to be human (compared to everyone else in Hyakuji) and the hit looked like it'd done a fair bit of damaged as she wheezed painfully. "Looks like your vulnerability is starting to show. You picked the wrong place to break into, bearcat." Aki bent down into her horse stance, keeping her feet tightly locked, but light enough to adjust for any attempts to keep her at a distance. This medium range was ideal for a devastating hit. Speed, power and timing was all she needed.

"Party's over Mrs. Grundy." Aki remarked, tightening her fists before finally making a move. Faking to the left, she charged forward suddenly, exploding through the gap between them. "Zhen Jiao.." she whispered under breath. As she drew closer, her fist pulled back and Aki put all her weight and momentum into a single explosive punch. "Fa Jing: Ma Bu Chong Chui!" (translator's note: Exploding Power: Thrusting Fist) If this were an anime, flaming Chinese characters would have appeared on the screen. Unfortunately, this was just real life and Aki would have to settle with a crushing blow to an assassin's ribcage.

Reality could be so unsatisfying sometimes.

Her opponent's inability to kill her in a single hit had been a mistake. She hadn't expected the blow to be that powerful, and that one failure would cost her. Having thrown everything into it, Chetri couldn't have more easily spotted it if it had hi-vis beacons all over her arm. She shot to her feet, quickly rising, and twisted her body to avoid the blow as a rush of air filled in the vacuum.

The Grey-haired girl's arm moved to press her pistol against her opponent's chest midpass, and their eyes met for a brief moment.

She pulled the trigger again, and the hammer crashed into the bullet, letting off another shot with a roar.

As soon as Aki moved in for the kill, the girl stood in a flash as if gaining a second wind through instinct alone. Her freight train of a fist whizzed past its target as she rotated around it, the runaway attack instead smashing into the desk that had totally been behind her the whole time. The solid wood exploded into splinters, messily severing it down the middle as the remaining two pieces collapsed into each other. Part of her sincerely hoped it hadn't been Oliver's desk. If that were gone where the heck was she was supposed to sit all the time? The detective's desk? Perish the thought. Aki felt her move in, tempted to perform another elbow strike or her shoulder to open her guard.

However that temptation was soundly snuffed out as she felt the barrel of the revolver press hard against her chest, painfully within the proximity of the first two wounds. Aki's defenses were strong, but they weren't permanent and they weren't invincible. Focusing on a single part of it was pretty brilliant, but she wasn't sure how much longer she could keep it up. The gun went out with a stifled bang and shielded muzzle flash. Her chest heaved, suddenly feeling like it was on fire from a combination of the powder burns and the decreasing ability of her skin to hold back bullets. For a moment she felt a sudden, but powerful resentment towards Superman.

Aki swallowed hard, her eyes falling back on the cold, unfeeling eyes of her assailant. How many bullets did that make? Her legs were beginning to feel weak as breathing began to get increasingly difficult. She coughed hard, raising a shaking hand to the young girl's neck and ensnaring it in a vice-like grip. Her strength was fading pretty fast, but she still had enough in her to crush this little Debbie's throat like shoestring potato. "P-put the gun down, or I break your neck so quick the last thing you'll ever see is sideways." Aki spoke with not the least amount of venom in her voice. She also spoke through her teeth, in too much pain to unclench them. This was hardly going according to plan.

It was abit unexpected of her to react so quickly, and though she saw it, the position made moving to avoid it in time impossible. She felt the other girl's fingers latch onto her neck, and her left hand reflexively grabbed it by the wrist while her feet quickly repositioned for balance. Her face seemed like stone, and completely calm even with the threat of her neck being snapped. Before she could even hear Aki's words, her other hand was already moving, raising the gun to Aki's face, and jamming it against Aki's forehead, putting them into another wordless standoff.
