And in the endless pause there came the sound of bees.
Eleanor had always told others, “Don’t let victories go to your head, or failures go to your heart.”

It was a cute little saying. One that she’d taken pride in repeating time and again to her students over the years. Right now though, she was having the most devilish time enacting that last half. Things with Hyakuji simply hadn’t panned out the way she’d imagined. The constant emergencies at Fairy Tail had pulled her away yet again, and no sooner had she attended her first meeting with the Elemancers, gained a teaching position, and begun endearing herself to the others, when circumstance stepped in the way and she lost it all in one fell swoop. Not that she gave a damn about titles of prestige like “Instructor” or “S-Class Mage”, but her constant flittering between Hyakuji and home highlighted a problem.

Her priorities weren’t straight.

Eleanor stood at the train station – Hyakuji’s only train station – and clutched her suitcase with one hand, and a letter addressed to Hiro’s school office in the other. The letter was simple, but pointed. It said that she was sorry. That she was frustrated. That she was tired of being fickle.

And that she was leaving.

Of course, there was a terrible irony in the fickleness of it. Wasn’t it fickle to run away, to go back home after going through all the trouble to return this last time? Could she really abandon him again? Eleanor felt her palms grow sweaty, her moist fingertips crinkling the letter’s crisp edges. -Make a decision, Eleanor-. she told herself. Her hand trembled, but otherwise remained still. -Make a decision.- Her eyes closed and she sighed softly in quiet frustration, her hand still refusing to move. -Put the letter in the bloody box, woman!- It did no good. Nothing she yelled between her temples gave power to her joints, and in the end…she tore the letter in half.

No. Not yet. Quitting was giving up. It was surrender. It meant she’d lost.

She found the nearest trash-can, and tossed the letter into that box instead. But…there was still something wrong. Eleanor took a seat on a nearby bench, placing her suitcase down and glancing at her watch. The train would be here in about seven minutes…was she sure she’d stay? She’d already thrown the letter away, but she could always write him one when she got back to the guild, right? After all, Hiro stayed so busy he’d barely notic-

-Dammit! No, I’m not leaving!- Eleanor sighed and slumped back into the bench, her hands massaging either temple in an attempt to ease the headache that was rapidly brewing. She sighed.

“…what am I doing…”

" Look out!!" Ikki yelled as he skated out of control along the rail ways. He knew that it was dangerous to be skating along a structure that trains traveled on, but he figured it wouldn't be a big deal....boy was he wrong. His air treks were shorted out by the electricity that flowed through the tracks, and due to that he was out of control.

" Crap! I knew this was a bad idea! I should have just went to work like I was told. Hiro is going to kill me! If I don't die from being his by a train first." Ikki thought as he began to close in on the station, he could see people staring at him in amazement as his air treks began to shoot off sparks of electricity. His eyes widened as he saw the back of a train that was already stopped at the station.

" Ah crap!" He grunted as he slammed into the back of the train, his body flung into the air. His eyes closed as he was tossed like a rag doll into the sky.

" So this is how it ends? Me smacking my head clean on the pavement, and my brains oozing out like old cheese." He thought as he opened his eyes only to see a woman in his landing way. She seemed familiar, but this didn't seem like the moment to try to figure out who she was. He was going to die, and if she didn't move, she would be going to the afterlife with him.

And in the endless pause there came the sound of bees.
Eleanor sat there, slumped in the bench like some kind of derelict drinker, when she suddenly found herself distracted by the sound of…fireworks? No, not quite. It was more electrical. Hissing, popping, crackling…what was that? She sat straight up and listened closer, unconsciously tilting her head in the direction of the tracks. Surely it wasn’t another train coming so soon after the last one, was it? No, it wasn’t loud enough for that…

" Ah crap!"

There was a sickening thud behind the train, a grunt of painful discomfort, and a shape flew into view – a boy. He tumbled through the air towards her at a startling speed, and there were only seconds between his take-off and his “improvised” crash landing. Angled as he was now, the kid was liable to crack his head on the pavement like a melon unless she acted fast. Every pair of eyes nearby was glued on the flailing young man and the woman he was careening towards, but there was no choice. Much as she hated it, Eleanor would have to use her powers in public.

There was no time to stand up from the bench – this would have to be quick. In a fluid gesture, Eleanor extended one arm towards the boy, opening her palm and spreading her fingers wide. In-between the boy and Eleanor there formed a translucent wall of shimmering yellow light, then a second wall connected at the first one’s base, creating an “L” shape that would catch the tumbling stranger in the little nook she’d created. She made sure to ease the wall backwards a bit to make sure he didn’t smack into it too hard, and once his trajectory brought him into it, she slowly brought him close, setting him down right in front of her. It was only at this point that she noticed his rollerblades. What a knucklehead.

“I don’t know what you call that trick,” she gave a wry smile, gesturing with her thumb in the direction he’d come from, “But I’d have to give you a 1.5 out of 10.”

Ikki let out a series of groans as he came to a rough, but soft landing, well soft compared to what it could have been. His eyes opened to see the woman who saved him as she spoke on his antics a small smile formed on his face as he placed his hands behind his head, with a stupid looking grin on his face.

" I call that trick The death jump, not one of my best, but I will perfect it." Ikki stated in a joking tone as he watched her carefully. Ikki blinked in confusion, he couldn't shake this feeling as if he had seen her before, and he couldn't quite place a finger on it, suddenly one of Hiro's memories flashed in his mind. Ikki shook his head trying to stop the vision from flashing, it was then he knew who she was.

" Your Ms. Eleanor? Am I right? I remember you from the tower." He asked as he studied her, it had been awhile since he had seen her, the incident at the tower was still a little hazy to Ikki, but he remembered her being with them, he also remembered the battle that took place to save Hiro, quite the event indeed. His gaze turned downward as he looked down at his air treks. They seemed to be fried as far as the motor was concerned, and to Ikki that meant trouble.

" Crap! Mom is going to kill me if I call home asking for another pair. Better lie and say Kai messed them up." He thought as a wave of gloom rushed over his body.

What, no “thank you”?

Children these days, so ungrateful…

It was just as well; the sheer absurdity of the situation probably made the thanks implied anyways. Still, it would’ve been nice. Eleanor gave the boy a once over: his rollerblades were ruined, his clothes were disheveled, and a thin sheen of sweat glinted across his brow. Just how long had he been riding the damned train tracks anyways? Was it a favorite hobby of his? A dare, maybe? She listened with amusement as he announced the name of his trick – it was fitting. Crossing her legs at the knee, she leaned back comfortably into the bench with her hands folded neatly in her lap.

Ah, so he was an Elemancer, eh? Eleanor’s expression suddenly soured as if she’d tasted something vile. She could’ve done so much good there…but who was to say she still couldn’t? Her name was on the roster, and it wasn’t as if she’d died or anything. Not physically, anyways. Still, the thought of being classified as anything less than an instructor when was at least six years the senior of most people in that place…it chaffed a bit. Not that she blamed them, not by a long shot. In the end, dedication was the only thing that truly made a difference.

Apparently, it was something she lacked.

As far as the boy went…she couldn’t remember his name to save her life. “Yes, that’s right. And you are…?” She felt a bit guilty, really.

Of course, it was only then that she noticed how truly dejected the boy was over his rollerblades. But honestly, what the devil did he expect? One simply couldn’t skate around the bloody train tracks all day and not expect to have a scratch or two in their wheels. The mere fact that he hadn’t broken a bone was already miracle enough.

“…Those aren’t expensive, I hope,” she said, gesturing to the boy’s feet.

" Oh how rude of me?! I'm Ikki Sanjiro! Thanks for helping me out there." Ikki stated with an excited tone as he bowed over, and over to her. He was grateful to her for saving his life, but at the moment he valued his air treks a little more than his own life.

" Nah my dad owns the company, so getting a new pair won't be a problem, its just that this is my third pair this week, mom is going to kill me." He stated with a laugh as he looked next to her as he plopped down in the spot next to her. He brought his hands down slowly removing the air treks from his feet. He sighed giving them a look over as his mood seemed to sour.

" Yep their dead. Oh well next pair then." Ikki stated in a more calm tone as he reached in his bag and removed a new pair, as he pulled them out, a small black flash flew from his bag, soaring into the air, and landing gently on Eleanors head, it was Kai.

"What a hottie! What a hottie!" The small bird yelled as it flapped around on her head. Kai was quite the womanizer, considering how normal he seemed. Ikki grunted reaching for the bird, only to pull his hand back at the sight of Kai pecking at his hand.

" Forgive my tiny friend there! He has a thing for women." He said with an apologetic look on his face.

"It has good tastes for an emergency food supply," Hiro Tsukasa commented with a cocky laugh as he approached the two. He'd been out for a stroll to check on the ley lines of the city and along the way tracking their flow noticed not only Ikki but also Eleanor. It made clear sense why Ikki was present, but Eleanor confused him. Why was she at the train station? Was she leaving again already?

"That is what it's for, right?" he added as he stared at Kai giving the bird a faked but devilish stare, "In a pinch on a mission we could fry this up with a little light Fire Magic. You'd probably only get a bite or two but even that could spell survival~" Bad pun was bad, but Hiro was in a surprisingly good mood despite the Festival fiasco.

Arcadia's testing of Durandal and Masamune were finalized and they were ready for use on missions. Likewise, after the lengthy exclusive trial run with Jameson the data had been finalized on the IXA System and the final version had been crafted and ready to Arcadia's use. All in all, despite Rasputin's theatrics, Arcadia was more ready than it had ever been before to bring about an end to things.

"So, what's up?" he asked cheerfully making it plenty clear to the little bird it was in no danger and he was merely having a little fun. He was merely making conversation at this point. Still, something about Eleanor being at the train station made him feel uneasy.

“Hm? Oh, it’s no problem Ikki.” She hadn’t expected such a formal “thanks”, especially not so late after the fact. Now he was overdoing it of course, bowing over and over again like one of those little wooden ducks. She raised her hand to wave him back to his seat, but he was fast, already seated and explaining his father’s business. She listened and nodded with genuine interest. “The whole company, eh? That’s impressive, but…” Eleanor trailed off, unsure of how to approach what she wanted to say. She didn’t know the boy too well yet, and lecturing him about being a good steward seemed a little out of place. Still, she couldn’t let him go on like this, even if it were just for the sake of his hobby.

Turning to Ikki with a knowing smile, Eleanor began slowly, “I know those may be easy to come by, but perhaps you might impress your father a great deal if you replaced them a bit less…frequently?” She ended with a suggestive tone, doing her best not to seem militant. Eleanor had no desire to play the part of his mother, but it was hard to tell with high-school kids; sometimes they responded well, while others told you to mind your own goddamned business. The phrase “old hag” was commonly stapled onto the end of that line, as was the severe beating that followed.

A blur of motion caught her eye, and Eleanor was tensed and ready to spring into action again, before the little…thing landed on her head, spouting what she dearly hoped was not Ikki’s inner monologue. If it was, she’d need to give an entirely separate lecture about the proper relations between a student and teacher, something that Hiro probably needed to hear as well. Eleanor giggled as Ikki attempted to silence the little loud-mouth, an obvious sign that the tiny bird was either completely off-base or right on the money, but for now she’d grant the poor boy the benefit of the doubt. “It’s no problem,” she said with an encouraging grin, “I can’t say I’m terribly insulted.”

"It has good tastes for an emergency food supply.”

Eleanor bolted upright. -Not now. Not him.-

The moment Eleanor’s eyes fell on Hiro’s approaching figure, her mind raced. Had he followed her? Did he know that she’d nearly left Hyakuji for good? Had he arranged for Ikki to meet her here and distract her, while he took his damned sweet time arriving? That last one fit him nicely, slacker that he was, but honestly none of Eleanor’s conspiracy theories made any logical sense.

He went on for a bit – in a rather obvious joke – about how he might like to roast the tiny little crow for a succulent snack, which was vaguely amusing, but the look in his eyes spoke volumes whenever his gaze washed over her. He wanted to know what the hell she was doing here. Eleanor shifted uncomfortably in her seat as Hiro finally voiced his curiosity. Did she have the reserves to admit it?

...nope.

“Well, Ikki here was showing me his tricks,” she lied, “Though he seems to have ruined yet another pair of good skates in the process.”

How noble, using Ikki as your scapegoat. Coward.

" To be honest Ms. Eleanor I try not to break them, its just they tend to break rather easy. I guess I just ride em too hard." Ikki stated in a confident tone as he began to put on the spares that he had. After locking them in place he tapped them on the ground to make sure they where on properly.

" Don't pay him any mind, he tends to just spout things that he thinks I'm thinking! But once again Kai mind reader or not you can't always hear my thoughts!" Ikki stated as he began to yell at the bird, his voice trailing off at the end as Hiro came into view. As Hiro began to joke about cooking Kai, Ikki smiled and pumped his fist in triumph.

" Sensei you fire up the grill, and ill bring the side dishes!" Ikki said joining in on the joke, he had always threatened to eat Kai, but maybe with someone else joining him in it, the young crow would be more inclined to believe it. Kai squawked and proceeded to retreat into Eleanors hair for safety, whimpering from within. Ikki sighed happily as he turned to hear Hiro's question, his eyes lit up as he answered.

" Ah I was just out-" Ikki was cut off by Eleanor speaking up. Ikki blinked a bit at her response. His mind raced over why she would lie. He figured he could either do something he never wanted to do and lie to Hiro, and just play along until everything made sense, or tell the truth. " Yea just out here showing off my moves. Having a little fun sensei. Wait? What brings you out here?"

"Ah I see," Hiro commented cheerfully at their answers, "Well that's nice. I guess you guys got a little closer after our fiasco at the Tower of Fang. Makes sense." However, these final words were twisted with a hint of suspicion as his gaze turned towards Eleanor. Ikki's answer made sense, for Ikki at least, but there was something still off about Eleanor being there.

She'd vanished time and again as she pleased without a goodbye to head back to Fairy Tail in the past. Was this just another time? He couldn't be sure but maybe her true intentions would become clear over time. "Ah well," he began answering Ikki's question, "I was just out trying to track the ley lines in the city."

"They're still way off," he added with a more serious tone, "It seems their disturbances roughly matched up to when the Hellfire Club first appeared so I'm certain it has something to do with them. However, what exactly or what they could be up to manipulating ley lines isn't clear."

"I guess you could say it's a typical day for me," he added with a friendly laugh.
