And in the endless pause there came the sound of bees.

There was no denying it – this place was creepy. Not that Riza actually bought into ghost stories or anything. To her the world was a place ruled by hard edges, formulas, and predictable outcomes. Supernatural stuff wasn’t all that special really – just another variable to be factored into a slightly different equation. It was just an old building, right? Nothing to be afraid of…right? If only Riza’s clammy palms could be made to agree. Of course, she wasn’t alone. In her right hand was the only source of light in the darkened hallway: Joyeuse’s holographic avatar. The A.I.’s muted yellow light illuminated just enough of the surroundings for a slow walking pace, but even the artificial construct wore a look of concern about this little trip. “Ma’am, are you sure you rememb-” Joy started to ask, but Riza cut her off. “Yes Joy, I know the way,” Riza replied, irritation evident in her tone. “This building isn’t very safe, you know. Local records show that-” “Yes Joy, I know. It was scheduled for demolition three years ago due to a lack of structural integrity.” “…well, if you can’t find it today we can always come ba-“ “Joy,” Riza frowned, holding Joyeuse up to eye level for a moment, “If you’re that scared, next time I’ll leave you behind.” Joyeuse’s translucent body gave a start as if she’d been jolted, her twinkling brows knit deeply as she frowned at Riza’s comment, before suddenly returning to her more neutral, machine-like expression. “I’m hardly capable of experiencing fear, ma’am.” “Of course. My mistake.” Creepy as it was, the building was mercifully small, and finding the entrance to Lillian Arion’s hidden laboratory didn’t take more than ten extremely frightening minutes. The entrance looked like any other part of the floor at the end of a particularly dark hallway, but it was unmistakable. Riza had only been here once before, and the meeting had been very short, but it was an encounter she could never forget. As for why the young inventor now suddenly felt compelled to find and open up the lab once again…that was her business. “Alright Joy, go for it.” Riza placed the palm-sized device holding her A.I. on the ground, and stood back. Joyeuse went right to work, first isolating the hidden door’s locking mechanism and attempting a straightforward open command – which failed, as expected. Joy then began digging a little deeper, eventually finding an entire hub of subroutines that each housed a rapidly changing value. Apparently the door had been set to a password that changed every few milliseconds…but how could any human open a door like this? It would require someone with some sort of psychic powers or--- Ah, yes, right. The door. Joy did have a tendency to get pulled away into her own curiosity for a few nanoseconds. Thankfully her human partner never noticed, what with her rather slow concept of passing time and all. Joy quickly copied the entirety of each subroutine and began generating her own numbers, creating a faux password that the door was all too happy to accept. A hydraulic hiss and a brief rumble echoed into the hallway as Riza retrieved her partner from the floor and headed down into the hidden entrance, which promptly closed behind her. Her primary goal realized, Riza wasted no time now, vaulting down the steps in pairs as she headed for the nearest terminal and plugged in Joy’s Crystal-Matrix Hub. “Now now, ma’am, no reason to be hast-“ “Bring up the last thing she was working on, Joy.” Riza’s tone was crisp and final – apparently this was important to her. “Yes ma’am, just a moment…” Edited by Kayui, Nov 24 2010, 10:47 PM.

NICE DRIVE!

"You won't find anything," Hiro Tsukasa's voice spoke from the darkness of the lab, "At least not anything that's important at all. The important stuff was wiped a long time ago," His eyes glared towards Riza from his place seated upon one of the lab tables. He recalled the girl. She held some unusual similarities in appearance to Lillian and the woman herself had taken interest in the girl for her powers. This seemed like a lifetime ago by this point. "You shouldn't be here either," Hiro added as he shifted and sat the small thin object he had been holding beside him on the table, it was too dim to make out, "The backside of the school is restricted for students." He quoted in a dry tone as if he were reading word for word out of a handbook rather than reciting it from memory. This was beside the fact there was no real logical reason for him to be there. At least not that was obvious. In truth, since the return from the Multiverse Lillian had been nowhere to be found. Had she been left behind and her lab run some contingency plan when she never checked in? Or did she return and wipe her lab personally before setting off with plans unknown? Hiro had begun coming there in his spare time. Half in hopes of a sign and half for the solitude of having a single place that nobody else knew about where he could catch a break from the world around him. "It was Riza, right?" he questioned in a cautious tone. |
