Something was definately wrong. It had been a long time since Alastor had heard the Judge's voice at the back of his head nudging him to do what was the best decision. Alastor didn't mind the voice anymore, if anything he had grown accustomed to it. However as of late the Judge had stopped talking to him altogether. It was rather unsettling. Alastor didn't know if he was fulfulling the punishment he'd been sentenced to or not. He'd tried whispering, praying, shouting, joking and cursing the Judge, all to no avail. That was why he was here.

He figured that this was the one place the anyone would be able to feel the slightest touch of spiritual pressence. People often spoke of getting a cold chill down their spine when in a graveyard. So for Alastor being able to acutely home in on spiritual pressence, especially that of the Judge, he'd be able to hopefully sense it even more so now.

Alastor walked into the graveyard, blending in somewhat as due to his stone-gray jeans, black jacket and shoes. The only thing that really made him stand out was his red t-shirt. Alastor found himself eventually at a cross-roads in the graveyard. He decided it was a good a spot as any to try commune with spirits. Folding his hands in front of him, he closed his eyes and bowed his head, trying to reach deep inside himself to call upon the Judge. He just hoped his spiritual pressence didn't distrub the dead.

If there was something on Selene's mind that she couldn't get off with either music or books, the corporate heiress found that a long walk or going for a swim helps. Although given the hour of the day and the current season, only the former seemed like a feasible option. A chill nipped at Selene's neck as the corporate heiress walked down a trail leading past the cemetery - this semester was a really happening one, but not exactly in a good way. As if the school landing in debt wasn't enough, she had to deal with her supernatural studies teacher being on trial, and now upon returning from Europe, to learn that Arcadia's old enemy the Hellfire Club has finally made their move, and could strike at any time.

Selene's hands went to the tan-colored jacket she had on over a pastel green sleevless blouse with white trim, yellow neck scarf and dark green ankle-length ruffled skirt, buttoning up the jacket as she felt the air growing colder. The corporate heiress decided that she's had about enough of a nighttime walk, and was about to dial a corporate chauffeur to drive her back to the campus as her right hand dug into her jacket's pocket, only to stop when she noticed a familiar figure heading into the cemetery, barely noticeable thanks to his choice of wardrobe acting as a camouflage of sorts amidst the gravestones. Alastor? Selene thought, following after the young corporate heir.

Following behind Alastor, Selene would soon find that the boy had stopped at a crossroads in the middle of the graveyard, his head bowed and eyes closed in concentration. Being no stranger to the occult, the English heiress wondered if Alastor was attempting to commune with spirits, inching forward to get a closer look, the corporate heiress unknowingly stepped on a fallen twig, which then broke apart with a dry, audible CRACK, made all that much louder thanks to the lack of ambient noises. "Cor blimey!" Selene gasped, ducking behind a gravestone in hopes that she hadn't caught Alastor's attention.

Alastor could feel him. The Judge was there within him. He could sense him there and the tattoo that covered his entire back was beginning to resonate. However, no matter how much Alastor tugged, the Judge wouldn't reveal himself or truely reveal his pressence. It was like knocking at someone's front door, knowing they were there and they simply insisted on making you believe they had gone out.

If that they way it was going to be, then Alastor decided it was perhaps time to push the boundaries a bit a force the Judge out. He was going to tap into his magical powers. The powers that had been forbidden from him. He began to dip his fingers into his power, feeling a small surge within him, like a small alarm. Yes, that's it. Come on out.

However, Alastor was cut short, losing his focus as he heard a twig snap. He opened his eyes, looking in front of him, dazed for a moment after having been lost in thought. However it was then that he felt it. He turned to the direction that Selene was hiding.
"Selene, I can sense you. Come on out."

"Selene, I can sense you. Come on out."

No point hiding at this point, as the corporate heiress realized that Alastor had become fully aware of her presence. It wasn't a who's there sort of response where one is aware of someone skulking in the shadows but is unsure of who it was specifically. The corporate heir made this very clear by mentioning Selene's name. He'd probably grown familiar to the unique 'frequency' of her magic signature - something that anyone who'd studied magic extensively was able to do, recognize specific individuals by their unique signatures.

"My apologies, Alastor," Selene replied as she rose from her hiding location, her upper body coming into view above the headstone, before stepping into full view in the middle of the cemetery track. "But you appeared pretty engrossed in whatever you were doing - I didn't mean to startle you," the English heiress walked over to where the Fainscastle heir was standing, her hands fiddling with the ends of her jacket.

"I just couldn't help but feel curious as to what brings you out here, in the middle of the night?" Selene asked. By now she knew that Hyakuji was a place where one should "expect the unexpected", and at this unearthly hour in the cemetery, she was unsure to what kind of unpleasant encounter they might draw upon themselves by virtue of simply being where they shouldn't be.

Alastor didn't answer right away. He first looked around the graveyard to see if there was anyone else about. He couldn't sense anything. With a slight sigh of relief, he turned back to Selene and gave her the reason as to why he was here. "Selene...I can't sense the Judge anymore." He moved a bit closer towards her, his voice becoming hushed.

"One morning, I simply could no longer sense him. For the past while I've been trying everything to draw him out of me. His power still slumbers within me and I can still access the power of the Jury and Executioner, I can still make rules without issue. However I cannot tap into my well of magic that was sealed away from me." Alastor folded his arms frustrated. He was still being watched, but now he wasn't sure if it was just a way to prove himself worthy, with the end of of his sentence in sight, or whether the Judge ha just found his constant job of nattering in his ear as tedious.

"I came here to try and force the Judge to show himself. A graveyard, at mid-night. This was one of the most promising locations and times to try and summon him, but even that wasn't enough. I have a bad feeling about it."

"I don't think there's anyone about," Selene said as Alastor glanced around, understanding the corporate heir's concern. For a while after that there was nothing but silence as neither of them spoke, no chirping of insects and other noises made by nocturnal animals broke the stillness of the night, which was somewhat unsettling.

"Selene...I can't sense the Judge anymore." Selene's eyes widened slightly at Alastor's hushed reply as the Faincastle heir inched towards her. "One morning, I simply could no longer sense him. For the past while I've been trying everything to draw him out of me. His power still slumbers within me and I can still access the power of the Jury and Executioner, I can still make rules without issue. However I cannot tap into my well of magic that was sealed away from me." The corporate heiress looked at Alastor as he stood with his arms crossed in frustration, her expression crumpling with concern towards Alastor.

"Maybe he's taking a break or something?" Selene wondered, trying to figure out a reason behind how a contractual spirit, bound to Alastor as a guardian that both protects him and evaluates his character, could simply ignore Alastor's summons. But the English heiress understood enough that unlike her own summons, the Judge spirit bound to Alastor was not compelled to obey him. "Or perhaps... it's a test of character. Maybe he wishes to see if you can use his Ruling ability and use the Jury and Executioner for the right cause, even without his counsel. I'm sorry, but I'm not exactly a subject expert on this one," Selene sighed and shook her head slightly, somewhat regretful over her lack of knowledge.

"I came here to try and force the Judge to show himself. A graveyard, at mid-night. This was one of the most promising locations and times to try and summon him, but even that wasn't enough. I have a bad feeling about it."

"I don't know if that's a wise move, Alastor," Selene commented as she wrapped her arms about herself, fidgeting slightly in her position as she moved her right foot by the ankle a little, the toe of her shoe stirring up the dirt below her. "The contract between you and the Judge is that the Judge isn't compelled to obey you - no amount of coaxing is going to get him to materialize if he isn't willing to show himself... but there are methods one can use to compel a spirit." The corporate heiress paused slightly as she looked at the patch of ground between herself and Alastor.

"I don't suppose you know how to utilize spell circles, do you?" Selene asked, driving forth a hint to Alastor on an alternative method.

Alastor watched Selene. Perhaps he was making her feel a bit uncomfortable with his frustration. He took a small breath to calm himself as she spoke. When she mentioned spell circles, Alastor nodded his head, "I know spells circles. I learnt the basics of them when I still had access to my mana reserves and could create basic ones with ease. However," Alastor looked at Selene, his hazel eyes looking at her in a matter of fact way, "Don't you think I would have tried such a method by now, if I could?"

Alastor extended his arm, trying to summon up his magical energy. Selene would surely feel it at Alastor's core, however, no matter how much tugging or pushing the Fainscastle did, it wouldn't budge. Most mages would easily be able to shift their magical energies around or within their bodies. Alastor's were rooted in place. "Selene, I know that you specialize in summoning, but even if you tried to summon the Judge for me through the use of a circle, it wouldn't work. You'd still need to enter where he slumbers, my core. You'd be blocked from entering. Only he an move in and out freely."

Alastor was perhaps assuming to much. Perhaps that was not what Selene was getting at, at all. However his frustration stemmed from a simple worry. What if the Judge never resurfaced? What if his powers were locked away from him forever?

Alastor nodded when Selene mentioned - if one had trained in magic, even if they aren't specialized summoners chances are they'd have been taught the basics of summoning in one form or another - the most rudimentary of them being a wizard's familiar. "I know spells circles. I learnt the basics of them when I still had access to my mana reserves and could create basic ones with ease. However," Alastor's hazel eyes locked onto Selene's green eyes. "Don't you think I would have tried such a method by now, if I could?" As if to illustrate his point, the Fainscastle heir extended his arm, attempting to channel some of his energy, something which Selene already knew wasn't possible as no mana flowed from his core, rendering him unable to cast even the most basic of spells.

"Selene, I know that you specialize in summoning, but even if you tried to summon the Judge for me through the use of a circle, it wouldn't work. You'd still need to enter where he slumbers, my core. You'd be blocked from entering. Only he can move in and out freely."

"True... I hadn't given that much thought at first," Selene replied; originally she thought she could just summon the Judge right out of Alastor the way she could summon a Valkyrie from Asgard, but as the corporate heir had put it, the Judge resides within his core; the two of them are essentially one. "What if we were to attempt to use the Judge's True Name to summon him though? If anyone knows it, that is..." the English heiress wondered. After all, being the very definition of one's existence, True Name commands are bar none, the most potent compulsion spells known to the magic community. But owing to its potency and its ease of abuse, there is little doubt that the secrets behind divining an individual's True Name and the methods of invoking it as a command were fiercely guarded secrets and considered as Forbidden Magic.

Alastor's eyes widened in realization as the words left Selene's mouth. That was it...the Judge's True Name. It was the only way to force summon him without a hitch. However, as soon as Alastor's face began to light up with hope, it immediately sank. He shook his head, "That impossible for me to do. There are only a handful of people who know my Judge's True Name, the Grand Magi who originally gave me this sentence." The undertone of Selene's father being on of those mages was there, but Alastor wasn't about to press the issue and make Selene feel bad for what her father had done.

"There are ways to discover a true name, but in order to do that I need access to the Judge himself." Alastor then ran a hand through his hair in slight distress, "What really gets me, is why he would just go silent. If it is a test, then I know I'm doing alright. I'm still upholding my duty as a judge, still doing what needs to be done for the greater good. So why won't he respond to me?"

Alastor's thoughts were cut short by a movement in the graveyard. It sound like a look foomph like something that landed on a cushion. Alastor turned to the direction the sound was coming from, instinct and judical reflex made him place himself in front of Selene, his footsteps slow and cautious. Alastor was sure Selene sensed it as well.
"Something...evil is coming."

The figure then stepped out from behind one of the larger tombstones.

The Executioner and Jury materialized instantly and Alastor immediately dropped into a defensive stance, shield forward and sword pulled back, poised to strike.
The figure didn't seem to have a face, but a loud whisper was heard by the two young mages. "Give me your burden. Let me help you."

"That impossible for me to do. There are only a handful of people who know my Judge's True Name, the Grand Magi who originally gave me this sentence." Alastor seemed to brighten up a little with a tiny ray of hope, before it got completely snuffed out. "There are ways to discover a true name, but in order to do that I need access to the Judge himself." The corporate heir ran a hand through his hair, slightly distressed over the turn of events. "What really gets me, is why he would just go silent. If it is a test, then I know I'm doing alright. I'm still upholding my duty as a judge, still doing what needs to be done for the greater good. So why won't he respond to me?"

"Alastor... did you hear that?" Selene whispered suddenly as she heard what sounded like a foomph, as if something just landed on a cushion; and the noise appeared to come from behind a tombstone nearby! Before the English heiress could say or do anything else, Alastor had already positioned himself in front of her, moving slowly and cautiously.

"Something...evil is coming." That Alastor didn't really have to say; Selene had felt it the moment she heard the noise - it was an unnatural aura, and evil in nature, befitting someone - something rather - that is not of this world.

"I feel it... whatever it is, its intentions can't be good..." Selene replied as the source of the evil presence stepped out from behind the tombstones - it reminded Selene of a gargoyle, being capable of a bipedal stance and possessing a pair of wings; however, the bird-like skull it had for a head and partial exoskeleton suggested it was something else altogether.

"Give me your burden. Let me help you." The creature's beak never moved and no words issued forth from its throat, however, Selene could clearly hear its voice ringing inside her mind as it communicated telepathically with them. Meanwhile, Alastor had already materialized the Executioner and Jury, standing defensively with the enchanted sword and shield.

"Who are you?" Selene asked, her hand slowly reaching into her jacket's pocket for her ritual dagger. "And what do you want?" Sure, while the creature gave off an aura that suggested that it was wholly evil in nature, as long as it displayed no signs of aggression towards her she wasn't about to simply attack it. All the while, Selene gave Alastor a concerned look - while she appreciated the young mage's valiant attempt to defend her, she was worried that he might simply drag the two of them into a fight that they could've avoided.

The creature stood there silently for a moment before speaking, "So...you will give me your burden? That weight in your arms?" Alastor's eyes narrowed for a moment. Was it talking about the Executioner and Jury? It had to be. Not just in the literal sense, but the figurative one as well. It began to float towards them, finally answering Selene's question, "I have been sent to lift his burden. It is so heavy, let me bear it instead. I will trade your burden for mine. It is far lighter and...you can then get to your powers again. I can unlock your seal."

Alastor froze for a moment. It couldn't be? Just from out of the blue? Like this oculd he really use magic again? He knew that it was witching hour, a time when magic was at it's strongest and he had tried to call out to the Judge. Had he instead summoned this creature? Was this a solu-

He stopped himself. No, no. It's a trick. A Judge's power is great, even greater when a Judge allows the user full access to it's abilities. This creature is foreign to here and it's aura is simply evil! It cannot be trusted, it's simply trying to tempt me.
Alastor regained his focus, raising his shield higher, "Stay back! This is not a burden! It is a sentence that I must fulfill! If I wanted some demon to be my solution, I would gone to see you kind long before! Stay back!"

The Skrow stopped in it's tracks. "Demon? You think I'm a demon?" It began to shake, slowly at first, uncontrollably. "I am not a demon! How dare you! I oppose demon's! You have power to do so too! Now give it to me! You cannot bear the weight!" Alastor gritted his teeth. "No way! Now get lost!"

The Skrow now shrieked out loud, it's true voice being heard for the first time. From behind two more tombstones, 2 others that looked just like it appeared. The flew up into the air before diving bombing Alastor and Selene. "Selene! Stay low!" Alastor brought up his shield, block the first set of talons and slashing out with his sword to parry the set that followed it. However the first Skrow then latched onto the edge's of his shield, trying to pull it off of Alastor's arm. The young Fainscastle was taken by surprise.

They were really going to try take it by force! He slashed that the beast's legs, causing it to let go involuntarily to save itself. They flew around the two mages like vultures, planning their next strike.

"I have been sent to lift his burden. It is so heavy, let me bear it instead. I will trade your burden for mine. It is far lighter and...you can then get to your powers again. I can unlock your seal." The winged skeletal creature replied after addressing Alastor first. His burden? Does that mean the Judge spirit that was bound to him? Selene knew enough that Alastor had shown resentment over how the fact that while the Judge served him faithfully, the contract also prevented him from learning even the most rudimentary spells due to the Judge sealing off access to his own mana source - somewhat like owning a top-of-the-line sports car, but having the ignition keys confiscated.

Such an evil aura... it could only come from something demonic... Selene thought as the creature spoke to Alastor, clearly offering a Faustian bargain - an offer to release Alastor from his 'curse'. The corporate heiress bit her lip, wanting to warn Alastor, yet at the same time not wishing to agitate the creature, knowing full well that demons tend to respond quite violently to anyone who resists their seductions towards the dark side. Alastor, don't listen to him... I have faith in you! Selene thought, convinced that the young mage-aspirant is not who the high council of the Arcanum Guild make him out to be; surely, this young man had the strength of character and morals to not be corrupted by the desire for power.

"Stay back! This is not a burden! It is a sentence that I must fulfill! If I wanted some demon to be my solution, I would gone to see you kind long before! Stay back!" Selene smiled in relief as Alastor rebuked the demon, raising his shield as a gesture of defiance, sending a loud and clear message to this messenger of evil that he would not be swayed; the English heiress was pleased, in part to know that her faith in Alastor was well-placed. Unfortunately, it also appeared that the worst-case scenario has occurred as the creature was absolutely livid at Alastor's refusal to accept its Faustian bargain.

"Demon? You think I'm a demon?" The creature shook slightly at first, before quaking visibly with rage. "I am not a demon! How dare you! I oppose demon's! You have power to do so too! Now give it to me! You cannot bear the weight!" Selene flinched and placed her hands over her ears as the creature emitted a shriek, sharp and piercing, unlike the more dandy, charming voice it had used when communicating with them telepathically. It wasn't a mere cry of rage however, as from behind two tombstones emerged another two more identical creatures, going airborne before attempting a diving attack on the two young magi.

"Selene! Stay low!" Selene didn't even have to wait for Alastor's comment, as the corporate heiress instinctively threw herself to the ground the moment she saw the winged horrors go airborne while Alastor fought them off, but apparently barely so, their ferocity almost catching the two of them off guard. There was a momentary respite as they circled overhead like demonic vultures, readying their next move, of which Selene was quick to capitalize on. Swiftly drawing her ritual dagger, the English heiress drew blood from her right hand, using her force of will alone to materialize the spell circle - a more exhausting procedure than painting the runes by hand, but it was far quicker.

Focusing her will, Selene visualized the summoning circle in her mind, as the glowing runes spontaneously appeared on the ground before her, followed by the lines and outer circles interlacing together to complete the spell, the center of the circle glowing brighter and brighter, until from the column of light emerged a Valkyrie warrior, summoned from the realm of Asgard into our world...

Posted Image

"Come hither, Valkyrie!" Selene announced as the circle faded away. Now bound to this realm, the Valkyrie lifted her head to look at the flying demons before materializing her claymore in a column of light, the sword pointing downwards and floating a couple inches off the ground. Grasping the handle of her mighty blade in her right hand, the Valkyrie flourished her claymore a few times before gripping it tightly with both hands, entering into a combat stance, ready for the enemy's next move.

Alastor had pretty much guessed Selene would summon the Valkyrie. It seemed to be her summon of choice. He paused a moment, wondering if the Judge would react. The last time he and the damsel had met, he had immediately shown interest in her. However, not even a twinge of acknowlegment could be felt. Alastor noted the Valkyrie was floating just a bit above the ground and then looked up at the Skrows that were circling them.
They seemed slightly hesitant now that the numbers were even.

They're not attacking? Well that might just mean,

Alastor's face was on the verge of smirking, but he stopped himself. Such an action was a sign of arrogance, not something fitting for a Judge. He spoke quickly to the Valkyrie, "Land quickly." He then stepped forward lowering Jury and Executioner to either side of him, while maintaining a firm grasp on them before the marking on his back began to glow with such a force that it shone clear through his clothes. It would be the first time that Selene would be seeing the marking. The only time it shone as such was when he was creating a rule used for judging.

"I judge! The skies shall not be spoiled by the act of combat! This I declare!" A large spell circle's light then erupted from the ground in a brown and white colouring around Alastor's feet before rapidly expanding throughout the area and fading off. The range was indescernable, but one could safely assume that Alastor was the center of it all and where-ever he moved, so would the area effect of the spell. The explosion of light had now also left Alastor clad in the armor of the Judge.

The rulings effects would then start to be seen. The Skrows were suddenly finding it harder to stay airborn, their wings becoming harder to flap before crashing down onto the ground. "Now's our chance! On to battle!" Alastor then lunged forward, shield forward and sword poised to strike.

"Now the odds are even," Selene commented, as it was now three on three. A trio of Skrows versus Alastor, herself and the Valkyrie. The demons continued to circle overhead, but they seemed to be hesitant to attack. Typical demonic behavior, Selene thought - preferring to pick on weak opponents and displaying fear when the odds are even, or stacked against them. The warrior maiden nodded as Alastor called out to her, dispelling the magical levitation that kept her feet above the ground and planting her armored feet to the ground as she gripped her claymore tightly in a two-handed grip.

"Cor blimey! The mark of the Judge!" The English heiress exclaimed as that recognizable glowing mark appeared on Alastor's back, it's light shining through his clothing.

"I judge! The skies shall not be spoiled by the act of combat! This I declare!" Could it be? Selene could only wonder if Alastor had somehow managed to use the Judge's signature Rulings without needing to summon him? The English heiress' suspicions were confirmed as a spell circle erupted around the corporate heir's feet, rapidly expanding in a burst of light that forced Selene to raise a hand over her eyes to shield out the glare.

"What the?" Gasped a stunned corporate heiress as soon as she was able to see. There before her was the Judge - no, it was Alastor, but clad in the armor of the Judge! Or at least she would've thought it was the Judge until she heard the young Faincastle's familiar voice.

"Now's our chance! On to battle!" As Alastor lunged forward with his sword and shield poised to strike. The effect of the Ruling could be seen, as the airborne demons appeared to how difficulty staying airborne - eventually becoming grounded altogether. Selene pointed at the nearest Skrow, and the summoned warrior maiden sensed her mistress' intention to attack. Obeying without question or hesitation, the Valkyrie moved in on fleet-footed strides, raising her claymore before attempting a horizontal slash, pivoting about the waist and swinging her massive sword in a horizontal arc, aiming for the Skrow's chest.

"Come on!" Selene shouted to one of the Skrows as she got into a combat stance, her fists balled up and raised like those of a boxer - unlike the more physically-capable (and better-armed) Alastor and Valkyrie, there wasn't really much the English heiress could do throwing herself at the enemy. But if any of them thought that she would make for an easy picking, she was nonetheless eager to prove them wrong!

The intial fall from the sky to the ground below had winded the Skrows, however, they weren't to be easily trifled with. Although they could no longer fly in the air, they still had a reasonable amount of fighting spirit left in them. As one they mentally communicated to their opponants. "You will be released from your burden, whether you want to be or not you mashochist" Clearly they were on a whole other level of bird-brain, but Alastor wasn't complaining, if their battle stratergies were as mangled as their theories, then this battle would be over quick enough.

Alastor swung the sword down at the first Skrow, aiming to carve it in two, clearly down the middle. The Skrow how raised it's wing to block. "What? How can you be-?" Alastor then noticed it. A small sheen at the edge of each of the Skrow's feathers. They were an array of small blades! Alastor felt Executioner be pushed back as the Skrow shrieked and counter attacked with its other wing. Alastor had barely enough time to block with Jury before he found himself trapped, the Skrow slashing away as his shield with both of iits wings. If a blade wasn't enough to stop them then a mace would be more than enough!

The young Fainscaslte felt the energies with Executioner shift and change, the sword reforming to have a longer handle with a large spiked iron ball on the end of it. "Rwaaar!" Alastor shifted all of his weight behind the shield, pushing and deflecting the Skrows attack and knocking it off balance for a moment. A moment was all it would take however, as Alastor swung the mace towards the Skrow. Although it attempted to block, the sheer weight of the mace in comparison to the sword seemed to work against it perfectly.

Meanwhile the Valkryie had her own problesm to deal with as the Skrow she was attacking brought up both of its wings to parry her sword swing. This Skrow seemed a lot more cautious, assuming that the Valkyrie was faster than Alastor, who was weighed down by more armour and his shield. So instead, it took a different approach. Jumping back slightly it raised it's wings and fired a volley of razor feathers at the Valkyrie.

As for Selene, well the remaining Skrow did indeed make her its target, moving towards her and attempting to slash at her. However, it seemed less worried about her considering it had only seen her use her dagger thus far. "Why do you help him child? You are obstructing what is meant to be!"
