Okay...that didn't work out too well. Star let out a shout as the heads exploded and she was sent tumbling back against the ground. She hit the ground with a thud, letting out a small grunt as she pushed herself up into a sitting position. She was getting really tired of getting thrown against the concrete by random creepy crawlies. Star sat up, glancing towards Jen as the parade seemed to move on. "Jen, are you alright?" she asked. "Sorry about that." It had been her idea in the first place, after all. What was with her and her constant penchant for bending the rules? She picked herself up off the ground and brushed herself off, wincing somewhat as she touched the area she had fallen on. That would leave a nasty bruise tomorrow. Or later...she had a feeling it was probably way past midnight. She checked the recorder to make sure that was still running. She hadn't fallen on it, though, so all was good. Star glanced around at the parade. It seemed to have swelled in height and grandeur. Humans and spirits blended together, becoming very hard to tell apart as they moved down the street. This time, however, it looked like they had a destination, white light at the end of the road. At the speed they were moving, it would take them a while to get there, but... She shivered, glancing towards Jen. "Light at the end of the tunnel? That can't be a good sign." She began to walk slowly. The parade wasn't fast moving, but they had already decided to find out what was going on, and she didn't intend to lose it. Her mind raced as she thought things through. She was fairly certain that the parade shouldn't be allowed to reach that far. But how could they stop it? The parade king's tin can crown looked like a real crown now, and she was fairly certain that wasn't a good sign either. If they went through, she was pretty sure they wouldn't be able to come back. And whatever was at the other side of that light, she had a feeling it wasn't heaven. "We need to stop this..." she muttered, her expression serious as she glanced at Jen. "Any ideas?" |

"Statements.. commands.. But only I give commands in the parade!" Well, that certainly sucked. And as the old saying went, it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye. And it appeared that what started out as an amusing little word game turned out to annoy The King greatly as he found himself being annoyed by the girls bending the rules of his word game. "So long as I have the crown, I am king!" He roared, and without warning, the floating heads that served as the girls' transport popped, sending both Jen and Star tumbling to the street below. "Teh! Sohn einer Hündin!" (Teh! Son of a bitch!) Jen cursed in German as she landed on her feet, her knees bending as her upper body lurched forward, planting her hands onto the ground to disperse the shock. "Jen, are you alright?" Star asked as the blond photomancer recovered from the fall. "Sorry about that." "No need to apologize, Star," Jen muttered her reply as she adjusted the collar of her military jacket. "That guy was a cheating bastard anyway..." Jen's words trailed off as she watched where the parade was headed into the distance - a white ethereal light at the furthest end of the street. "Light at the end of the tunnel? That can't be a good sign." Star commented. "Indeed. It's like one of those deathbed accounts from people who were dying moments ago but resuscitated..." Jen replied with a sagely nod of her head. "Most accounts report of walking or floating down a dark tunnel, and at the end of the tunnel is a bright light... but from these accounts one can safely say it is not a good thing to go into the light." Jen deduced that once someone enters the light, there would be no returning to the land of the living. "We need to stop this... Any ideas?" Jen rested her hand thoughtfully against her chin. "The ghost said that as long as he wears his crown he is the king of the parade. So... my best guess is that if we were to put a stop to this, we must find a way to take the crown from him... but how?" Jen suddenly raised her eyebrows as a metaphorical light bulb lit up above her head. "We need a diversion... and when I get Dead Elvis' attention, use one of your light bolts to knock the crown off his head, and then I'll seize it." Jen said before popping a Mentos mint into her mouth. ♫ Doo-doo-doo-doo, doo-doo, DOO-WA! ♫ Jen then disappeared behind a building, and moments later, came back into sight in a change of clothing; or rather she was now cosplaying as... a policewoman. Police uniform Moving to the far end of the street, just several meters away from the light Jen proceeded to move a barricade into the middle of the street, one of those safety/crowd control barricades used by the police to close off roads during parades and other events. Blowing the police whistle loudly, Jen proceeded to raise a white gloved hand to signal the parade to halt. "Road's closed! Sorry, but you're going to have to take a detour!" Jen announced, trying her best to speak in an authoritative tone used by the police. |

The paraders cheered as the lady appeared asking them to divert. They happily swerved to veer around a block. Not really seeing an issue. However atop the largest head a darkness had begun to spread. It seemed like the head had begun to change. It took on less and less of a whimsical appearance. The wings sharpened and the head slowly changed into a large black mass. Sharp pointing eyes the only distinguishing feature. It flapped it's wings as the darkened air seemed to take on a chill. "I am the king.. of the parade.." The king said scowling. The animals all seemed to take on the same blackened formless appearance. it seemed now that this darkness had spread the girls were no longer privy to the illusions of the parade. The trash that had been spread was no longer confetti and balloons but jut a street full of trash. The phantasms had lost their human appearance it was an eerily silent moment of phantasms. "No one gives orders in the parade but me!" The girls could now see the real parade. A collection of ghostly spirits bound to the procession. With ethereal beasts created from the power of the king of the parade. The people whom had been drawn in dance and acted out their fantasy. "Get away from this parade!" He roared as he ordered them all to continue towards the end of the parade. They had been halted for amoemnt but now they were heading back. |

"Mm, got it," said Star under her breath, nodding quietly as Jen walked off. She would never admit it, except maybe to Meglumar or Helios, but she felt a nervous walking in the parade by herself. It didn't help that she kept getting a sinister vibe from it, the same feeling she got about Pleasure Island when watching Pinocchio for the first time. If something felt too good to be true...it probably was. She took a deep breath to keep herself calm, sorting through the light she had again. She had enough for a short fight, nothing extended. It was a little disturbing that she thought of her light in terms of fights now; there had been a time when she thought in terms of how many cute little light figures she could make before she ran out. But even she couldn't go through the Heartless thing and come out completely unchanged. She looked up as Jen reappeared, directing the parade. A grin came onto her face despite herself. Go Jen, she thought silently. She would have gone with a few more lights herself, but that was just her. Star looked up suddenly as the parade changed, her eyes widening. The parade no longer seemed fun, or bright. It no longer seemed subtly creepy. Instead it had changed to full blown, horror-movie-esque scary. The confetti and balloons strewn across the street had changed into trash, the ghosts no longer seemed human. Instead, they seemed like what they were, formless spirits. The humans were still there, still celebrating. It was as if they didn't notice that they were surrounded by ghosts. It looked like Jen's diversion had made the parade king angry as he ordered them to leave. She swallowed hard, clenching her fists. Jen was in front of him, Star was behind. Hopefully he would keep his eyes on Jen for just a moment. Hopefully he wouldn't notice her. "Don't think so!" she said, extending her right hand. Light collected in it, forming into a ribbon that quickly shot out towards the crown. If it was successful, the ribbon would wrap around it and pull, yanking it off the parade king's head and sending it flying back towards Star. If. |

They may be ghosts and all... but it seemed that even being dead and all they respect the law and the authority it brings. Jen thought as the paraders cheered and veered around the road block the 'policewoman' had set up. It appears that another piece of lore the purple-haired girl had gathered proved to be true regarding ghosts - that symbols and uniforms of authority are in a sense consecrated against ghosts and spirits. She recalled hearing an urban legend from a cousin of hers in Singapore, that how the service crests on the uniforms of the police and armed forces were apparently blessed by representatives of Singapore's major religions and have a mild warding effect against restless spirits. How true was that was anyone's guess, but as far as Jen wasn't even a genuine police uniform, just a cosplay outfit. But then again, the intelligence of spirits are often questionable anyway. Especially after reading up once in Singapore on the SUDS (Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome) that was the scourge of Thai laborers overseas, whereby men have been known to pass away unexpectedly in their sleep. As the various rumors on this syndrome were circulated around, common ones said a lady ghost was responsible for stealing the life essence of sleeping men. Aside from the usual stuff of purchasing holy charms from Buddhist monks, some of them apparently even took to dressing themselves up as women when sleeping, said to pass themselves off as women to get the ghost to ignore them. If it works... Jen seriously questioned the intelligence of spirits in that case. But hey, it worked, and that was good enough for Jen. "I am the king.. of the parade.." The King said with a scowl of displeasure. "No one gives orders in the parade but me!" And it seemed to annoy The King to no end that someone else apart from himself was calling the shots on this parade. And as the pall of darkness radiated outwards from the head float that served as The King's transport, the girls could see the true face of the parade. No longer was it a fun and lively if a little creepy scene of festivities, but a ghoulish and macabre display. The spirits lost their human appearance, now appearing as shapeless phantoms, while the human paraders continued to lose themselves in their ecstasy, still under the spell of the parade. The balloons and confetti were revealed as what they truly are - garbage. "Get away from this parade!" The King ordered, and the paraders, men and shades alike, fell back in line. Was Jen afraid? Truth be told, the purple-haired girl was petrified. She feared no living opponent - but even she had no idea how to deal with something that is already dead, with no bones to break or flesh to sunder. Still, if there's anything that was of assurance to her is that she could play mind games with them all night long. Somewhat like lion-taming. Since a human trainer was physically no match for a lion, his only bet at subduing the beast was to fight it on the psychological level. And the most vital part of this? To display no fear. Jen stood her ground defiantly, blowing her whistle once more before raising a luminous marker used by the police to flag vehicles in the dark. "I represent the law of Hyakuji city, and you will respect my authority! And for creating a public nuisance in the streets, you will thereby call off this parade!" Police? For a moment there Jen realized she was acting more like a Mega City judge, but no matter - she would need to put on an assertive front. And that was when Star lashed out with a ribbon of light, looking to snare The King's crown and yank it off his head. |

The king of the parade leaped back to avoid the whip-like action of her attack, however this rapid motion dislodged the crown causing it to fall onto one of the other black birds. The effect was immediate. The celebration had now become chaotic. With no king the spirits were now loosed from their hypnotic spell. And the effect that made the parade invisible to everyone outside of it dispersed as well. Rapidly the spirits spread out through the area into houses and buildings. Screams of terror and fright were heard all over. meanwhile the formless birds of pitch black color took flight, screeching as they swooped into the air. The crown itself landed on the back of a formless massive creature that had once been disguised as an elephant. It charged down through the streets. The king dug his hands into the bird trying to keep control of it. It dove down towards the crown. "I AM KING HERE... IF I'M NOT THEN WHAT AM I?!" He roared. |

The whip missed, but the attack succeeded all the same. The king was de-crowned. The moment the crown fell off his head, though, the entire parade dissolved into chaos. The spirits immediately dispersed, entering the houses that lined both sides of the street. Star winced at the sudden screams of terror that she could hear from the houses. At least, she hoped that they were screams of terror only and not any kind of physical pain. She really hoped these weren't the kinds of ghosts that hurt people. The crown fell off the king's head, landing on one of the formless beasts that...had that once been one of the elephants? Anyway, it didn't matter. The elephant-thing was now running off with the crown, and the--understandably--irate king was diving down after it. It didn't take a genius to guess that if the king could get his hands on the crown again, she and Jen would be in deep trouble. That meant that she had to get to the crown before the king. Star took off at a run down the streets and extended her hand. An orb of light formed in it, heading towards the fallen crown. With any luck, it would knock the crown off the creature's back and into the streets, where it would be stationary, and close to where Jen was standing. "Jen!" shouted Star as she fired off the orb of light. |

*Cue music* The King swiftly moved back to avoid Star's whip of light, but the sudden movement still ended up with him losing his 'crown' as it fell off his head, landing on top of one of the formless wraiths that vaguely bore the shape of an elephant. Freed from the hypnotic spell of the parade, the spirits began to run wild. No longer concealed from the eyes of normal bystanders, the citizens in their homes were able to see them clearly, eliciting a pandemonium of screams. Jen frowned slightly at what happened - things didn't work out according to plan it seems. But at least they've managed to de-crown Dead Elvis. Still, Jen hoped that the ghosts that are now running all over the shop are only scaring people rather than hurting them. Still, if they're going to have any chance of getting things under control, they would have to take the crown, before The King gets it back! "I AM KING HERE... IF I'M NOT THEN WHAT AM I?!" The King roared as it dived towards his fallen crown on the back of a formless black bird. "You're Dead Elvis," Jen gave a snarky reply as she waved in Star's direction as the blond photomancer came running down the lane. "Jen!" Star called out. "Right here, Star!" Jen replied as she raised her right arm, giving Star a thumbs up to signal that she was ready. "Ready as can be! Jen shouted as she noticed the orb of light forming in Star's extended hand. Hut! Hut! Hut! Jen thought as she readied her stance like a defensive linebacker the moment Star let fly her orb of light. Should it knock the crown onto the street below, Jen would be ready to make a dive towards it to pick it up. |

The crown fell to the streets near Jen as planned. However the king wasn't ready to call it quits yet. He had one last chance.. appeal. "DON'T TOUCH IT... if you touch it, you'll become like me! You'll be the king... WHy would you want that?! But I DO want it. To be king of the parade, to continue to exist... This is all that matters to me. The power I held in life was nothing.. But this was finally my time! MY REAL WORLD... what harm is there?! The parade... it brings joy to those it draws in.." "Why do you wish only to destroy it..?" |

The orb of light flew through the air, hitting the crown dead-on and knocking it off the elephant's back and onto the street, where Jen was currently making a break for it. "Alright~!" said Star, letting out a little whoop of triumph as she pumped her fist into the air and jumped. "She shoots! She scores!" Nothing like firing orbs of light at tons of tiny Heartless to improve one's aim. "Go get it, Jen!" she shouted, running forward as well. She had no hope of reaching the crown herself, not before the king, but Jen was almost there. "DON'T TOUCH IT... if you touch it, you'll become like me!" Star's eyes widened, and she skidded to a sudden halt, turning towards the parade king as he spoke. Like him? So he was also a ghost...and he had wanted to become the parade king because he wanted...what? Power? Respect? People to finally stop and take notice of him? They were all things that Star had wanted at one point in her life or another. And then he went on to ask what was wrong with letting the parade continue to exist. She paused. Why did she want to destroy it? Then, she looked around and saw what was going on--saw the chaos in the streets, saw the reality of the parade behind the illusion. She turned towards the parade king again, her eyes narrowing. "Because none of that is real," she said. "Because if all you have is celebration...if all you have is joy...then what sort of meaning can your life possibly have? And because that was just an illusion. I mean, look around! That was the illusion, this is real!" She gestured at the chaos, the confusion, the ghosts and formless beings that covered the street. "Does this look fun to you? Or joyful?" She glanced at Jen, glanced at the crown, and wondered what she was going to do about that. She didn't want this...she certainly couldn't touch it...but what could she do? Even if the king was telling the truth...she had been able to touch it with her light. Alright, J...time to put those photomancy lessons to the test... she thought, forming an orb of light and sending it towards the crown. This time, she tried to wrap the light around it, encasing it in the light so that she could pick up the orb without touching the crown. It was hard work, and Star was having difficulty just keeping focus. Her eyes narrowed in concentration, beads of sweat forming on her forehead... |

"Go get it, Jen!" Jen sprang into action as soon as she heard Star's cue, seeing the crown get knocked off the phantom elephant and onto the floor. The purple-haired girl dived towards the crown, rolling along the floor as she hit the tarmac. But just when her hands were mere inches away from grabbing the crown, The King attempted to appeal with the two girls. "DON'T TOUCH IT... if you touch it, you'll become like me!" Jen stayed her hand, now eying the crown as if it were a ticking time bomb. "Why would you want that?! But I DO want it. To be king of the parade, to continue to exist... This is all that matters to me. The power I held in life was nothing.. But this was finally my time! MY REAL WORLD... what harm is there?! The parade... it brings joy to those it draws in..." "Why do you wish only to destroy it..?" "You know, king, part of your argument doesn't hold up to scrutiny..." Jen commented as she rested a hand thoughtfully against her chin as she cocked her head slightly to stare at the ghost. Jen noticed Star's approach, and seeing that the photomancer appeared to have something to say the purple-haired girl held her tongue, letting Star speak first. "Because none of that is real," the blond photomancer said as she checked out her surroundings, before looking back at The King with a pair of narrowed eyes. "Because if all you have is celebration...if all you have is joy...then what sort of meaning can your life possibly have? And because that was just an illusion. I mean, look around! That was the illusion, this is real!" "Well said, Star," Jen replied. "Are you even aware that this parade puts a spell on those who attend it, binding them against their will? This joy you speak of in the parade... it's nothing more than a hollow ataraxia. Besides, the down times of life - the moments of sorrow and loss... these are what adds meaning to the high times." "Does this look fun to you? Or joyful?" Star interjected, gesturing to the scene of panic and chaos around them. Jen watched as Star moved the crown by surrounding it within an orb of light, using the light to move the crown for her. Brilliant move, Jen had to give it to Star, but it was obviously a taxing one for her. "Here, Star - use this," Jen said as she picked up from among the trash that littered the street an empty chocolate tin, large enough to hold the crown, gesturing for Star to drop the crown into the container. "But one thing just bugs me though..." Jen said as she rested a hand on her hip. "You said you chose to be the King of the Parade, yet you warned us not to touch the crown, saying that if we touched it we'd end up like you. So the question is... did the crown choose you? Or did you choose the crown? Are you truly in control of this parade as you claimed to be? Or are you simply another prisoner under its spell, albeit a willing one?" Jen began to interrogate the ghost, looking sternly at The King as if she were a real police officer. "So tell me what you know about this parade, how did it all start?" ![]() "He's lying.." Skull said walking slowly towards them. "The crown wouldn't make you like him... It was a lie to get you to hesitate.." "..Tch! You would have enjoyed the parade! You're already just a ghost that haunts this city anyway!" Skull stood, hesitating a moment, before tilting his fedora down. "Maybe I would have... But that kind of false pleasure is disgusting.." He pointed the SkullMagnum at it blasting it until the sphere and crown exploded. Soon after the ghosts and spirits began to fade away, their forms turning translucent and disappearing, some passed on, some spirits returned to their bodies, and some were left as humans.. Staring listlessly at the sky. The king himself had collapsed onto the ground weeping and clawing to the earth as he faded into non-existence. "Originally a Hyakuji Student with the ability to put mass suggestion into the minds of others. Small urges and so forth. Eventually they learned how to materialize outside their body for short periods of time. They eventually turned to the occult and had that can made into a phylactery. It allowed him to stay outside of his body as long as he wanted.. And increased his suggestive power.." He let go of his hat brim. "The alternative was that slowly his consciousness began to fray at the edges. He lost parts of his mind bit by bit and couldn't return to it because of the phylactery It's time to go back to your body.." He said idly. "Its.. still alive? I've left it so long..." "Heh... Lucky for you someone found it after you collapsed. They thought you were in a coma and put you on life support... It was from that incident I followed the clues to unravel what was occurring here.." He took off his fedora. "From there it was finding your soul to return it... But I never could. I was too easily put under the spell of the parade because I'd lost my place in this world.." He turned to the girls. "That's where they come in.." He turned pushing the hat onto his head as he spoke firmly. "With this the case is resolved." He said pointing the remains of the 'king'. |

"Alright," said Star, with a grunt of effort as the orb of light moved up, heading towards the chocolate tin. She was almost there...all she had to do was move it a few inches. At that moment, a shot suddenly rang out, and the orb of light exploded, taking the crown with it. Star blinked at the sudden easing of pressure, the scattered pieces of light turning back around and shooting back into her skin as she looked up. It was a skull...with a fedora...and a gun. Creepy...and yet weirdly awesome. She raised a hand to her head...it was throbbing slightly from the effort, but it was nothing she couldn't handle. She really needed to work on her technique if orbs and ribbons were the only things she could make with any sort of consistency. She listened to his story, trying hard not to look at the parade king's complete grief. ...This all started because a Hyakuji student used their powers too much and went a little insane? Star swallowed, feeling her mouth suddenly go dry. She glanced down, before turning towards Jen. As far as she could remember, Jennifer hadn't been there in Shinya. The only thing Jennifer had seen of her light was Star sane, under the influence of the keyblades. But now she didn't have those keyblades...and Jen didn't know that if Star used her power too much...what happened to that man could very well happen to him. You should tell her... she thought to herself. She's your friend. She put the thought out of her mind, her hand going up to the crucifix around her neck and brushing against it with her fingers. As long as she kept it on, Jen would never need to know. Nobody who wasn't in Arcadia or hadn't seen her in Shinya would need to know. She pushed all thoughts about insanity out of her head, turning towards the skull man. She smiled. "So that's it," she said, turning towards Jen. "Case closed!" She glanced at the sidewalk, where the video camera was still pointing towards them. "And we got that all on tape too!" |

"Well sorry, king, but we're going to be holding onto this widget for safekeeping until you can provide us with some answers," Jen replied as she waited for Star to drop the crown into the chocolate tin, so that the photomancer wouldn't have to continually exert herself and they could hold onto it safely without touching it. That is, if what the ghost said was true, that is. Jen had her suspicions, but without a safe way to confirm them she certainly wasn't taking her chances with things she didn't understand. "He's lying.." Jen turned her head as she noticed a strange-looking man wearing an armored suit and a fedora along with a skull-like mask walking down the street towards them. While Jen knew Hyakuji, much like Domino Town to be a place populated by superpowered individuals, costumed freaks were still an oddity in such places. "The crown wouldn't make you like him... It was a lie to get you to hesitate.." "..Tch! You would have enjoyed the parade! You're already just a ghost that haunts this city anyway!" The King retorted. "Maybe I would have... But that kind of false pleasure is disgusting.." The skeletal costumed man suddenly pulled out a gun, forcing Jen to drop the tin and reel back as he fired - not at the girls, but at the orb of light that held the king's crown, causing it to explode! Jen surveyed the scene around her, watching as the ghosts and spirits faded away, people snapping out of the spell as things returned to normal. Well, it seemed that her hypothesis on the king's crown being the power behind the parade was right - though not quite in the way she originally thought; with the original plan being to try on the crown herself and order a stop to the parade. She was close to getting an answer herself however, so she could consider it a good try on her part. Jen nodded as this skull man explained things about the identity of the King of the Parade, and how he was originally a student from Hyakuji before ending up in his current state due to involvement with the occult. "Well, I'm glad to hear there is a happy ending to this," Jen mused after the skull man mentioned that the ghost's body was still alive, albeit comatose and waiting to be reunited with the spirit. "With this the case is resolved." "I'm glad to have played a part in this," Jen replied, smiling happily at having not only rid the city of a nuisance, but also saving the lives of many who would otherwise be trapped in The Matrix, so to speak. "So that's it," Star added, "Case closed!" Jen nodded as Star glanced towards where the still-running camera was. "And we got that all on tape too!" "Aye, we've got one hell of a story for paranormal enthusiast communities everywhere!" Jen beamed with pride. "I say, this calls for a celebration for our efforts! But..." Jen suddenly yawned loudly. "I think sleep comes first..." The purple-haired girl removed her headdress as she rubbed her eyes as she muttered. "I'm tired..." |
