More than a Ghost on a Shipwreck

Evan was standing on the sports field. It wasn’t a place that he came too often, but he was enjoying himself nonetheless. He didn’t know why, but getting some real exercise and just practicing his abilities was something that was always fun to do. He had an entire box of paper with him, and then he also had his book bag filled with paper. He was going to try and teach himself some new abilities while he was here, and since he had met no other paper masters…ever, he was going to do it all by himself. He pulled out a few slips of paper and began to move them with his mind. It was easy enough. He could probably move most of these pieces without touching them. His powers had really started to grow when he starting coming to school. He was proud in the way that he was growing, and he began to feel like he could take on a few people in a fight. In that last tournament he entered he lost for his team, and since then Evan had tried to grow stronger. Evan just did some basic exercises to get himself ready to teach some new moves to himself. It was usually harder than people could imagine teaching yourself how to do something you have only thought of in your imagination… |

Evan wasn’t even paying attention until it started to get a little warm around his feet, and he noticed that he had heard some strange sound. When he looked down he noticed that there was a burning arrow next to his foot, and sidestepping to not get burned, he got out of the way. He looked over at the person who had shot the arrow. Evan almost wondered if the guy knew how to use that thing. He was miles away from the target with that arrow, something that a true bowman doesn’t ever do. “It’s pretty good that you came out to get some practice with that thing, it looks like you needed it,” Evan said, almost cruelly. He crafted a bow with the paper that he had in his hand, and quickly made a bowstring. Manipulating the paper into an arrow he notched back and arrow and fired it at a target at the far end of the field. It didn’t hit the center, he wasn’t much of a marksman, but it certainly got close. He was proud. “That’s the better way to shoot a bow, at the target not at someone else,” Evan exclaimed as he dismantled the bow of paper. “Now if you please not hit me, I’m not too interested in catching fire today…” |

"Really you dont say?" Ryu took out another arrow and shot the target through the bullseye. "I'm still working on shoting fire arrows im a marksman when it comes to normal shots." Ryu stood there watching the other guys face. "So a paper user eh? Interesting." |

“Yeah, I’m a paper master, the only one that I know of. Apparently you are a pyromancer. Congrats, that must be interesting,” Evan said callously. “There are so many of you. You must be able to learn so much from so many people. I wish I had the ability to do that.” Evan gave a mean spirited smile at the kid. It was obvious that he was hoping to impress Evan with that shot, but there was no doubt that it didn’t since Evan’s face didn’t change very much. It wasn’t impressive that he was able to hit the bull’s eye, a lot of people could do that. “Listen, just don’t aim at me again and I’ll be fine.” Evan just said blankly, there was no doubt that he was trying to get a rise out of the boy. |

“You’re trying to impress me. You should probably stop because it isn’t going to do much good. Not to mention that telling me to stop being an ass isn’t going to get me to stop being an ass. It usually doesn’t work that way. I’m just offering you some advice. In fact, calling me an ass is generally going to make me act more like an ass, as I am doing now,” Evan swallowed really fast as all of the talking was causing a build up of saliva in his mouth. “Next, it isn’t very hard to hit a stationary target in the same place a bunch of times. That is why there is no way that you can impress me like that. And lastly, don’t call me paperboy because it isn’t very clever. I’m sure that you could think of something better to call me,” Evan bowed to him to show that his rant was done. He was really not liking this kid a lot. But then again most people didn’t like Evan too much, so it was really okay. “Oh, and I’m sorry about you being an outcast, join the club.” |

Evan jumped back from the boy’s handshake. He gave a fairly clean smile this time, not a cruel one. This was certainly a change, but at the same time he wasn’t about to say that he was a friend with this guy. First of all it took a lot to get Evan to be friends with you, and that was why he had only had one true friend at Hyakuji High. “I don’t like anyone, not just fire users. So don’t worry about that. But if you want to spar then you got it,” Evan said standing next to his box of paper. He picked it up and hurled the box towards the boy, the paper began to flitter to the ground filling up a good portion of the field. Before the space between them even cleared though, Evan had already created ten razor sharp paper slices and hurled then at the boy with fairly deadly accuracy. He didn’t want to hurt the boy, but he wasn’t about to just have a friendly fight. Remember, they weren’t friends yet. “The name is Evan,” he said as he gathered the paper together to make a longsword. |

Evan had expected his paper to burn up. He wished that he could make more than ten pieces sort of fireproof, but that was not a skill that he had yet learned. He just shrugged it off a little bit and finally heard what the boy’s name was. It was Ryu, a name that he had heard only a few times before. What was in a name, really? Evan again just shrugged and that’s when he noticed that an arrow was flying at him. The truth was that he was so busy being an ass that he didn’t even see it coming until it was too late. It lodged itself right into his arm. Evan looked down at it for a moment and he dropped the paper sword. It wasn’t the worst pain that he had ever felt in his life, but it really didn’t feel good. He quickly pulled it out and then covered it with a hardened piece of paper to make sure his arm didn’t bleed more than it already was. He looked at the paper all around him. He needed to do something to catch the boy off guard, and he knew just what to do. Paper began to gather around Ryu’s feet, and before long it made a sort of sheet. Evan quickly moved his hands back in an attempt for the paper to trip Ryu up. Right after that he sent ten more razor sharp pieces of paper at the kid in hopes that might do some damage. He hated being wounded, and he was wounded first. Get your head in the game Evan… |

Ryu consentrated on his feet and burned the paper away with the heat. He went to move to dodge the paper but got cut by a piece. "Ow damn." He used his heat to alderise the wound. "Not bad like i said you are far more skilled then the other paper master i knew." |

Evan just passed off the comment at first, but then he realized that every time Ryu said something it usually dealt with some other paper master. Evan had never even heard of another paper master, he had even asked people who knew a lot about the world, and they didn’t know any. He might have to ask Ryu about it after the fight, but at the same time he didn’t really want to meet a paper master if they were weaker than he was. Sure it might be nice to know another one, but he was trying to find someone who could train him, not the other way around. Either way, Evan stopped thinking about that since he was in the middle of a fight. He needed to keep his head in this, and so that was exactly what he was going to do. He didn’t want to hurt Ryu, but he didn’t really know how to spar, so he was going to go all out now. He quickly gathered paper together to create a huge spiky ball, and then he held it with a paper chain. Evan twisted around and with him the ball on the chain ricocheted towards Ryu. The force would do major damage if it hit, but it was fairly slow, probably able to be dodged easily, but it was what Evan had planned for the after attack that would probably get Ryu, but that all depended on this attack, now didn’t it? |

"Wow powerfull but to slow."Ryu dodged and made a ball of fire in his hand and threw it onto the mace as it passed catching it on fire. He saw the glint of thought and wondered what he was doing.*Hm he is planing something.*Ryu thought and braced for what was to come. |

Evan was prepared for his mace being destroyed, and that was why he had a paper chain behind Ryu the whole time. Ryu might have thought that he burned all the paper around his feet, but the truth was that Evan hadn’t used it all up so there was plenty to make a chain from, and that was exactly what he did. AS soon as Ryu had burned the mace Evan flicked his wrist and the paper chain struck out. The tip was deadly sharp and it was heading straight for Ryu’s back, and even if it missed, the rest of it was razor sharp and was going to constrict around him. Evan then whipped up twenty picks. They were rolled up pieces of paper that were extra sharp and used for penetration more than anything else. He tossed them in Ryu’s direction just to make sure that he took some sort of damage from the entire attack. Evan didn’t grow tired from using his paper abilities unless he created things that were far too big, so maybe this was going to be how he won the match. Just outlasting the fire boys abilities. |
