Limiting Reactants!; Theoretical Yields <Partially Open> <Hiro>
Topic Started: Apr 4 2010, 07:53 PM (1,384 Views)
Liara

"What is the theoretical yield of CN2H4O when 100. grams of NH3 and is reacted with 100. grams of CO2? How would the theoretical yield react if it was combined with a series of tests focused around H4O reactants? Would the yield stay intact or?..."

A lone girl walks back and forth in one of the Environmental Chemistry Labs located deep within the Neo-Photon Lab, muttering words that most would find gibberish at her age...heck at any age but this was a pursuit of knowledge. She was tapping away at her Ipad furiously as she began the tests she came here to perform and record. The data would bring her closer in understanding the world and how it worked and that was her only wish. To learn was to live to live is to understand.

"This is Liara Veracon begining my reasearch and will record it accordingly.", Liara said before opening up a DCN complex program onto her IPad which would react with the core elements placed in front of the

"The equation required to begin would be...2NH3(g) +CO2 (g) --> CN2H4O(s) + H2O (l) then..."

With quick taps and formulated workings, Liara began to break it down flawlessly with a speed that was unknown to most scientists let alone a normal human being. She was focused beyond compare and was meticulously clawing through the bindings and the compounds before her. The machinery in front of her was moving as if it was dancing before she finally finished the first step before her.

"First convert g of NH3 and CO2 to moles. One mole of NH3 = 17.03 grams found by adding the atomic mass of N 14.01 + 3 times the atomic mass for H, 3 x 1.008. One mole of CO2 = 44.01 g.

100 g NH3 x (1 mole NH3 / 17.03 g NH3) = 5.87 moles NH3

100 g CO2 x (1 mole CO2 / 44.01 g CO2) = 2.27 moles CO2

The balanced equation tells us that it takes 2 moles of NH3 to react with 1 mole of CO2.

2.27 moles CO2 x (2 moles NH3 / 1 mole CO2) = 4.54 moles of NH3 needed to react with 2.27 moles of CO2. Do we have enough NH3 available? Yes, 5.87 moles is more than enough. When the reaction is completed, there will be 5.87 - 4.54 = 1.37 moles of NH3 left unreacted. So CO2 is the limiting reactant, i.e. will be used up first, and will decide how much product is produced.

The balanced equation tells us that 1 mole of CO2 produces 1 mole of CN2H4O.

2.27 moles CO2 x (1 mole CN2H4O / 1 mole CO2) = 2.27 moles CN2H4O

The molar mass of CN2H4O = C (12.01) + 2N (2 x 14.01) + 4H (4 x 1.008) + O (16.00) = 60.06 g

2.27 moles CN2H4O x (60.06 g CN2H4O / 1 mole CN2H4O) = 136 g CN2H4O...

...Step one is complete. Theoretical Yield has been found and contained."

With a smile, Liara put the project on hold for the time being and slipped the IPad into her carrying case and stepped over to a table near her. She picked up a bottle of water and pushed up her glasses before taking a sip of it. She was proud of her work but she wasn't anywhere near finished. She'd probably be up all night running tests now that the easy part was done but she was happy. Science was her first and only love but she wondered...was the only person here right now? The Lab was huge and there seemed there was no one else there besides the guy who let her in and the other person who walked her to this lab for use. It was...kind of creepy...

"...", Liara just looked around realizing how...empty it was.

"You must have pretty buggy instruments for such an experiment." a wry voice commented "Since H4O isn't a stable chemical compound, and would break down into hydrogen gas and water. Oxygen can't hold 4 molecular bonds like that. It's basic chemistry."

It came from the direction of the door apparently, and whoever was there had clearly been there for awhile. Probably leaning against the other side of the wall, and the door had been open the whole time.

Posted Image
"So to register H4O, your instrumentation must either be terrible, or you're reading it wrong. The proper reactants to produce CN2H4O via NH3 and CO2 is H2O and C10H16N5O13P3. Adenosine Triphosphate basically."

As she spoke, the figure revealed itself from the door, continuing to speak bluntly and knowingly, and then turned to the young student who was 'experimenting'. It was Miyuki Takamachi. The history teacher.

"The proper reaction is 2NH3,CO2,3ATP and H2O, results in urea and hydrogen gas. Well, and some phosphates. So I suppose one way to put it is..." she paused for a moment, grinning almost mockingly "You're making urine, and doing it wrong."

....

"Well, this could lead to questions of why you're trying to produce urea of all things in a lab. I mean, the world sure produces enough of the stuff without synthesizing it. But what I really want to know is, 'what exactly do you think you're doing here at this hour'" she asked quite bluntly, sounding all the more disinterested.

Liara

Liara stared the snobbish woman with a uninterested look on her face and simply pushed up her glasses as the woman went on judging Liara's work as if she was the end all to science as we know it. Liara had no time to talk to someone who would be too into herself to even hold a "conversation".

"I don't have to explain myself to you as I know who let me in here at this hour and gave me permission to conduct research here. You have a horrible attitude and I'd rather not deal with you at the moment. Not only this but you have gotten my entire experiment wrong but I am not even going to get into that.", Liara said as she looked down at her IPad unamused by the woman standing in front her.

"Now if you are just going to be rude and interupt my experiments, not even introducing yourself first, I will have to ask you to leave me be.", She finished as she tapped away upong her IPad quickly, recording the data she had just gathered.

No matter how much she would rather avoid it, People with even SOME knowledge in the field of science can be know-it-alls. Liara knows this all too well being her entire family focused their lives around it. No matter how intellegent one person is, It's no reason to look down upon others. A TRULY intellegent person would use their knowledge to HELP others, Not be a total bitch. Liara knew she had much to learn but there was no reason to jump to assumptions and mouth off like this manly dressed woman in front of her. Normally, Liara would be thrilled to exchange knowledge, theories, and the like with someone with such a high intellect as this woman but knowledge doesn't make one have class it seems.

"HA HAA!" Yuki shouted loudly as the door to the lab opened once more and she rushed through dressed in a business-like suit/skirt outfit, glasses and a white lab coat, "I, the great and evil science teacher, Lillian have caught you in my secret lab! And uh... um... now... um..." Her words trailed off slowly as the girl seemed to become confused.

"That was really terrible," Hiro Tsukasa spoke, a bit embarrassedly, as he entered after Yuki. Letting out a soft sigh he shrugged his shoulders in defeat. Yuki was supposed to be his servant, or so she informed him against his will, yet thus far she seemed mostly out of control.

Moving forward Hiro passed Yuki, who now seemed lost in thought looking over a small notepad she drew forth trying to figure out where she went wrong, ignoring her actions. "This is convenient," he began, "I was looking for you, Miyuki. Principal Hitagawa was having me run delivery on this memo but it seems you've already met the point."

"This girl here just transferred and the Principal has granted her the lowest level security clearance for the Lab here," Hiro continued, "So if you're ever around and catch sight of her on this level it's fine."

Slowly, Hiro looked from Miyuki to the transfer student and then back again. Had he walked in upon some sort of argument? "Ah..." he continued, "Did I come in at a bad time?"

"I don't know, it seemed accurate enough, if somewhat stylised." she mused regarding the impression.

Really, if you could sum up everything that woman did in here, it pretty much did boil down to that.

"Well if she has a pass it's fine I suppose." Miyuki gave a disinterested shrug, and turned back to the student "I would suggest rechecking the basics. If the entire basis of the operation is wrong, you can only arrive at the correct answer by coincidence, and there wouldn't be any way to verify it."

The tone seemed bored really. This was the sort of person with a smart mouth and as much reverence for anything as a logger might have for a toothpick. Sarcastic and acerbic, but it was just her way of giving advice. Afterall, guiding people didn't mean you had to be all nice-nice.

Liara

Liara looked onto the two that entered with a puzzled expression. She wasn't quite she who this Lillian was but it seemed this girl did a semi-poor impersonation of the woman. The older man seemed to be a teacher of some subject. Liara wasn't very familiar with the student body or the faculty as of yet but would be once school started and the proper documentation was given to her.

"Thank you sir for that explanation and I do apologize that you needed to come all the way down here to deliver the memo. Do thank the Principle if you happen to see her first.", Liara said as she finished up her initial record of her data before the not-so-nice woman decided to speak again.

"I thank you as well for your input miss but I'd rather learn through trial and error on my own.", She said to the woman whom the male teacher called 'Miyuki'.

If these were some of the teachers here and their...companions, Then Liara's stay here could be more interesting then she originally thought. The possibility to learn so much had been laid down in front of her and she couldn't wait to dive into this pool of information head first.

"My name is Liara Veracon. May I ask all of yours?", Liara asked politely, preparing to tap down their names and vocal data her database on the inhabitants of the people here in Hyakuji.

"Let's see..." Yuki mumbled to herself quietly off in her own world apart from the conversation going on as the flipped through pages of the small note pad she was holding, "...I know I saw bits of his memories when I was released from the Orb... Why isn't he all into me like he was for her? I wrote down everything... No way! Am I... could Yuki...? Am I supposed to be really mean to him first?"

As Yuki continued puzzling over her notes Hiro let out a soft sigh and picked up on the question he was asked, "I'm Hiro Tsukasa, the teacher for Supernatural Studies. And the girl with me is.... uh... my assistant, Yuki." He seemed slightly nervous as he rattled off the first logical excuse that came into his mind.

"NO!" Yuki suddenly shouted as she ran forward and shoved Hiro (however, unfortunately this shove was far too playful to actually knock him back), "I'm not Yuki, Idiot! I'm Lillian, the Science Teacher. If-... If you had my Super Smarts then you'd know that, Tsukasa!"

"I'm the history teacher."

Miyuki wasn't really so much paying attention to them as she was to a pad of paper on the table, where she was furiously scribbling down notes with a red pen.

Oxygen has 6 valence electrons making bonds with 4H impossible. The structure of CH4N2O is that of 2HN linked to an atom of carbon in turn linked to an atom of oxygen, thus allowing such a bond. Without using the proper reactants, you cannot calculate the reaction properly.

The overall energy requirement for the aforementioned reaction with normal circumstances as naturally occurs is NH3 + CO2 + 3 C10H16N5O13P3 + 2 H2O -> CH4N2O+ C4H4O4 + 4 Pi + 2 C10H15N5O10P2 + C10H14N5O7P.

Reactions related to this also produce C10H14N5O7P, ergo resulting in a net energy gain.

But really, this is all making piss, it's less work handing you a bucket. Expect alot of basic refreshers. You'll need them.

finishing the notes, she tore the page off the pad, grabbed a nearby beaker, and unceremoniously dumped the scrap of paper and glassware into the student's hands, and made her way towards the door, tucking her hands in her pockets.

"Well since everything is in order, i'll be taking my leave. I'll be at the lab testing range if I'm needed for anything. Ja ne." she waved with the back of her hand, not even bothering to turn back to them.

There was a yawn at the end, as if punctuating her lack of interest. Whatever the whole thing might have been for Liara, to the teacher who had just left, it had been nothing more than someone needing a few (well, alot of) corrections to do their work properly.

Liara

Liara highly doubted that this...Yuki or Lillian was the science teacher from simple observation and her speaking habits. Besides that, This Mr. Tsukasa seemed far more believable to be honest and because of this, Liara just ignored the young woman.

"Well, It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Tsukasa and Ms. Yuki and/or Lillian.", She said before before bowing and helping Tsukasa-sensei up gently.

Liara then nodded a thank you to History teacher as she handed her corrections to her experiment. It seems she wasn't as HARSH as she first appeared to be. She meant to help...in a much different way and not quite NEEDING the last section of her notes. Liara still appreciated the help from such a talented mind.

"And you as well Ms. Miyuki.", Liara said with a smile before the woman left with a sigh.

"I wonder if she is always like that.", Liara said a bit jokingly towards Tsukasa-sensei.

"So...Supernatural Studies. I will be taking your class most definitely this coming year. I am quite interesting in...The phenomena that goes on constantly here that just cant be quite explained by modern science...at least yet that is.", Liara said a bit cocky at the end.

"Heh," Hiro laughed a little as he crossed his arms slowly, "You actually sound a bit like Lillian... wondering about Magic in the scientific light and all..."

"That's not fair!" Yuki exclaimed as she huffed loudly, "Yuki's supposed to be Lillian! Err I mean... I... I am Lillian!"

Laughing a little Hiro placed a hand on Yuki's head ruffling her hair playfully as he spoke, "You'll get it eventually, okay?" He spoke to her in a soft reassuring voice which seemed to make her eyes light up in enjoyment.

Turning back towards Liara, Hiro smiled cheerfully as he continued their conversation, "Well I look forward to having you in class then. I'm not sure what exactly you have interest in as far as Magic and Science working together, but perhaps if you get any ideas I can spare some time outside of class to work with you on things. I looked over the file the office has on you and it seems you're pretty promising already in your field."

Liara

Liara blushed a bit at his compliments and his offering of help. She may be polite and usually collected but she still was a sixteen year old girl causing her to get embarrassed quite easily. It was a nice gesture that he extended. Liara's knowledge on the 'magical' field of study was incredibly low...if not non-existent. Before she came here, she thought everything could be explained simply through functions, formulas, numbers...and it still MAY be true but she had no idea where to even start with the powers, creatures, and the like here in Hyakuji. It could take her entire life to even begin to break the mold but she was determined and Liara was determined...She got her work done. No questions asked.

"Thank you for your compliments sir and I may just take you up on that offer Mr. Tsukasa. Things here don't seem to make much 'sense' but in due time I will have mostly everything figured out. Just you wait and see...", Liara said with what seemed to be a sparkle in her eyes.

"And this one here...Yuki/Lillian. I see you have quite the infatuation with Mr. Tsukasa. How interesting...", Liara said quite boldly to say the least.

"'How do you tell someone you really love them?' has been a topic of my research for sometime now and it changes from person to person. If you ever need help in this subject, please feel free to contact me for assistance anytime. We could do a detailed study on Mr. Tsukasa's life and interests and develop the perfect way to approach his heart.", She finished...as if Hiro wasn't standing RIGHT there...

"Haaaa!" Yuki shouted in fear at Liara's sudden assessment. Her face had flushed a bright red and she quickly ran for the exit mumbling something about needed to check one of the other labs since she was the Science Teacher. For whatever reason, perhaps the fact her servitude had been forced upon him, Hiro seemed unusually oblivious towards Yuki's growing interest.

Looking back to Liara, Hiro laughed slightly unsure what had happened but continuing the conversation anyways, "Well, I'd warn you to be careful if you intend to study me. You might find more than you bargain for..."

He let his words trail off, almost suggestively in tone, before picking back up on the original matter at hand, "In any case, welcome to the school. If you have any questions you can feel free to ask me or drop by my office or classroom when school is going on if you need help with anything."

Liara

Liara laughed a bit at Yuki's reaction to her suggestion as the young woman ran out of the room flustered. The truth seemed to much for the young woman to bare but it must be said. One cannot learn if they hide the facts...

"Oh dear...I suppose it was something I said.", Liara said half-sarcastic knowing all to well the reason of Yuki's sudden escape.

Just then Hiro said something quote ominous and verging creepy...to a normal person at least. Liara looked on with a smile as he gave his suggestion and took a mental note before speaking once more.

"But that's the exact reason for research and study. I don't wish to find what I am looking for but for much more. Danger is something that comes with the territory. If I was afraid of every outcome or piece of knowledge, I wouldn't be where I am today.", Liara said as polite as one could.

"I was only joking with Ms. Yuki at first but your suggestion against it has only made me more curious.", Liara said with a small hidden undertone to her voice.

Liara then listened attentively to Hiro's words and nodded her understanding. He was quite the friendly teacher which was a welcome change to the snotty professors back at the estate. With him being so willing to help as well, Adjusting to this school may be less trouble then originally thought. And if all the teachers were as intelligent as Ms. Miyuki as well, She'd surely learn much from them all.

"Thank you Mr. Tsukasa. I do appreciate all your help.", She said before rubbing her stomach as it growled ferociously.

Liara had lost track of time doing various experiments and just realized that...she hadn't eaten a thing since the day before. Liara knew all too well the unhealthy eating habits that come with overnight researching and the effects of doing such. She let out a sigh as eating was quite necessary for...living but was sometimes a waste of time.

"It seems I have forgotten something quite important. Forgive me Mr. Tsukasa but I should try and locate a restaurant of some sort for dinner. Do you know of any good places in the area?", Liara asked before cleaning up her supplies and the like.

"You don't have to thank me," Hiro answered cheerfully, "It's my pleasure." Crossing his arms slowly Hiro began to ponder about the girl's question. There were plenty of restaurants in Hyakuji, but being new she'd probably have little idea of exactly where to go.

"Hrm... as for restaurants," He began pacing a little in thought," There is Subarashii Restaurant in the Suburban District... it's pretty popular with all the students here. Downtown is Dogs Bar & Grill that one is pretty popular too... Downtown also has Cafe Mahou, which I happen to own... though they have food I wouldn't really recommend it for a full on meal."

"If you're done here," he added as he stopped pacing and turned to face Liara once more, "Then I'd be glad to show you to one of those places or just guide you around the town till you found somewhere you liked. Miyuki was the last professor I needed to pass the memo onto so I'm done on campus for right now."

Liara

"Oh that would be greatly appreciated. I have the geographical and topographic maps of the city as well as reviews for all the restaurants but I rarely judge a place's worth by reviews alone. Everyone is entitled for their own opinions after all.", She said with a smile before finishing her cleaning up the mess she had made with her research and experiments.

Something about Hiro felt familiar and it was a welcome feelings. She couldn't exactly grasp what it was but she felt she could trust him which is a feeling that she rarely has with most people. Most of the people, even her own family, were backstabbers and wouldn't wait a second to steal another's work so trust wasn't something Liara handed out to everyone.

"Well, Where to first? I was actually hoping you'd take me to your cafe first. I have never been a heavy eater so a cafe sounds nice right about now. I could go for a milkshake actually...", Liara said trailing off for a moment as she thought about the delicious desserts that she could indulge herself in.

Liara always did have a sweet tooth. She ended up having to work out every morning to work off all the desserts she'd partake in during the day before but she didn't mind. It was well worth the deliciousness. Completely unhealthy but hey...Even people who know better indulge themselves every now and then.

"Shall we?", She said with a smile before letting down her hair and removing her glasses which were only necessary for reading really.
