Meglumar sat beneath the single tree, watching the sunset. This war was done. The heartless were gone. The multiverse was saved. He was alive. Star was alive. Most of the people survived. It was finally over. There could be some peace, for a moment. The world wasn't in any danger. He didn't have to rush to save anyone. He could just sit back and think. And thinking was important right now.

I won't let you hurt someone I care for!

What did he mean when he said that in the final battles? Why did he say this when protecting Star? He did, of course, care for Star. She was his best friend. But ever since that night in the hospital, he'd been feeling so bizarre, so strange, so different, he could not understand it.

But it felt...right.

Ever since the arrival in Florencia he had been changing. It was her influence, of course. You don't spend an extended period of time with someone without being changed by them. But it left him so confused. Which did he follow? His Heart? Or his Heritage? Was this feeling even real? Already others were losing the powers of the heart, he would be no exception. This might just go away.

But...he didn't think he wanted that to happen.

Star decided that she liked Hyakuji. Alright, so it wasn't Kara and it didn't have a beach and her Japanese skills were...less than stellar, but it was still a city where interesting things happened to interesting people. With her father and Helios back, she thought she would even be able to live here if she had to. Start again, new friends, new people...

New loves.

Star wrapped her arms around herself and frowned, glancing around her. She had gone off for her walk alone, telling Helios not to follow. She just needed to clear her head. It was still hard to accept that Helios was her grandfather, not even when he himself admitted to her. It was still hard to accept that she was somehow...more than human...or was it less? Star could never be too sure about that. It was a little hard to accept that she might not be able to go home.

With all that on her plate, boy troubles were the last thing she needed. Especially boy troubles with someone who was unlikely to like her back. Well, it was a distinct possibility that he did already like her, but Meglumar? Ask him to circumvent tradition? She would rather ask pigs to fly, it would be less embarrassing. She thought the incident J had taught her better, but ever since Niwa...ever since that time in Traverse Town...

She sighed and shook her head. Confusing, confusing.

Why couldn't things go back to being simple and easy?

She looked up, suddenly realizing that she was approaching a hill with a single tree. And that Meglumar was sitting under it. Star glanced at the sunset and sighed. He was the last person she wanted to see right now, but...

They had made it through together, in the end. She walked over to him, keeping her emotions guarded as she sat down next to him. "Nice view...isn't it?" she asked.

"Nice view...isn't it?"

Meglumar turned his head quickly, and saw Star standing right there. He quickly kept up his guard on his emotions. He wasn't sure if letting her feel this kind of internal conflict was exactly smart right now. It seemed she was doing the same, since he couldn't feel anything from her.

"Mmm, Yes. It is." He said, moving aside somewhat so that Star would have room to sit. He was silent. Nervous. What....what did he say right now? What was he supposed to say? What was he supposed to think? Act? With Star here, it felt like it was harder to think on these things. This girl was so completely disruptive to him. Then again, in a way, it's what he found most interesting about her.

She was the only one who made him feel this way. He turned his head away from her. Confusion. Adoration. Affection. These things, or a combination of them, or something like them, were building up inside them. "So....How do you like the town?" Picking something at random to talk about might keep him distracted from these feelings.

There were no feelings coming from Meglumar. Star didn't fool herself into thinking that was because they weren't there. She knew better. She had seen it during the fight. She had always known that those emotions were there. She gathered up the folds of her skirt so that she could sit, sitting next to Meglumar. Star leaned against the back of the tree trunk, pulling her knees up and resting her hands on them as she smiled at him.

"...I like it," she said after a while. "My Japanese is abysmal, but at least I know enough to understand what people are saying, and everyone speaks English anyway." I could get used to it... she thought, but she didn't add that. If it was at all possible, she would like to go home, even if Hyakuji was a good enough substitute.

Star looked up, watching the sun set. She paused in sudden realization. Almost a year later, she realized that she now knew how Meglumar had felt back then--that day she first met him on the beach looking out over the ocean. Star blinked and giggled, covering her mouth with her hand. The giggle turned into full out laughter as Star sat there, thinking about that.

The irony. The delicious irony.

Meglumar turned to Star as she burst out laughing abruptly. Well, that was random. "...Just...what is so funny?" He asked, wondering if he said anything stupid enough to make her laugh this hard. Did he inadvertently make a joke? No, not really. He just asked what she thought of the the town, what else was there for him to say?

...Oh no. It finally happened. "...You've finally gone insane, haven't you?" He said with a small smile.Probably not, but, well, was she ever really sane to begin with? The girl once dyed her hair green orange and purple for a day, and another day walked around with a potted plant on her head.

Star continued to laugh, wrapping one arm around her belly as she waved off Meglumar's words with another hand. "No, no," she said, finally beginning to calm down from her self-induced high. She grinned at him. "No, that happened years ago. You can't go insane when you've never been sane."

In Star's world, sanity was both relative and highly overrated. She was calm now, though, so she smiled, letting her fingers twist around the new spring grass as she looked over the school. It was a nice school. She could really imagine going to school here. "I was just thinking that now I know what it's like to be you, getting lost in a different world and all..." she said.

Meglumar stared at Star for a moment. A moment later he let out a small chuckle, before turning back to look at the sunset. "Aha. But, it's not the same." He said in a matter-of-factly way."You're from a world with similar rules. You don't have to worry about which set of rules to follow." He said, the smile turning into a small frown for a moment, before reverting back.

"Ah, but. There is also the fact that I did not have a good friend when I arrived." He said turning back to face her again. "I wish I had it that easy." He said, wishing he had someone as good as Star from his world. But, really.....He had never been so close to someone from his own world. That's partly why being around her made things so much more....DIFFICULT.

Star grinned, leaning over to hug her knees. "Well," she said with a smile as she rested her chin on her knees and wrapped her arms around them from behind. "I've always been lucky." Or really just optimistic. It was probably just optimism, because when Star looked at it, really looked at it, her life wasn't exactly a bed of roses. Dead mom, random powers, one big family mess, never getting the right guy, getting shipped off to another world, fighting Heartless, nearly losing it, never ever getting the right guy, and somebody else always got the cute heels that were on sale.

And yet. She wouldn't trade her life for anything. She loved her life. Was she just that optimistic, or was she insane? Insane, she thought with a small smile. Yep, definitely insane.

She glanced at Meglumar, wondering what he was going to do now. She knew that he wanted to go home. She also knew about his family's traditions. Would he continue to follow them even now? "You know what's really bad about this though?" she asked. "After all that, we never did get you home."

Meglumar sighed and placed his back directly against the three. "Well. Perhaps it's best this way." He said, comparing what Kara and Hyakuji had compared to his world. "I probably have a 2% less chance of being squished by a giant monster here." He said, with a shrug. "Besides..." He said with a small worried frown.

"Apparently, my mother and father like these kinds of worlds. Apparently, they don't ever want to leave. They can have more children without fear of resources being lost. Apparently I'm already on the way to being an older brother." He said, with a sour look on his face. "I have a good feeling that lots of change is on the way. I hope it is mostly good."

Star blinked at Meglumar. Was he saying...that he was staying? She swallowed hard, immediately pushing down the flutter of hope she suddenly felt. Even if he was staying, that didn't mean that he was changing all of his ways. And even if he did change all of them, that didn't mean that he would like her that way. When it really came down to that, she wasn't even sure if she liked him that way.

Was she just using these feelings as a rebound for what she had felt for J?

She laughed at what Meglumar said. "Congratulations," she said. "I wish I had a little sibling. Or even a big sibling. But...you know, it's probably a good thing I'm an only child, insane elemental side and all." She laughed nervously, scratching the back at her neck before looking out at the sunset. "But wow, Meglumar, if you're staying, you'll have to get used to lots of new things."

"What would you do if a pretty girl told you she liked you, for instance?"

"EH?" He said, quite surprised by THAT little question. His face was, for a moment, redder than the setting sun. He then regained control of himself, not wanting to stop keeping himself in check. LAST thing he needed was an emotional dam breaking. That would cause some complications.

He scratched the back of his head, unsure what to say to that. "Truthfully? I have no idea. I don't HAVE to control my emotions. It is highly doubtful I will ever be able to get home to be paired..." He said, with a sigh. "But...I'd have to say no, unless I knew said girl fairly well." He said, his face still a rather tomato-ey shade of red.

Star wondered exactly how dense Meglumar could be. She thought she was being extremely obvious here. Then again, people that actually cared whether or not they looked like jerks would usually act like they didn't think someone else was talking about them. Not that Star particularly cared about that sort of thing. She smiled at Meglumar, leaning back against the tree as she watched the sunset. A mischievous glint entered her eye.

"What if she was your best friend?" asked Star. "Like, hypothetically, of course, your partner or something?" She giggled a bit at the end of her sentence, trying very hard not to feel nervous. What, really, did she have to lose when she had walked up here expecting nothing in the first place? On impulse, Star let a little bit of her inner barrier fall, revealing a quick flash of her feelings.

Affection, nervousness, a fair amount of mischief. If she had been dropping hints earlier and hoping he would catch on, this was more like writing her confession down on a sign and whacking him over the head with it.

Silence. That was all that came from Meglumar for an entire minute. The emotions Star was sending, the not-so subtle hints, This was all obvious. He had a chance at a relationship should he want it. He cared for Star a great deal. But, would it work out? Would it be worth going against what he was raised on? As he kept thinking on that, the only sound that could be heard from him was his heart beating rapidly and loudly.

...

To hell with it. If his parents were allowed to adapt, so was he. And this was something his heart wanted.

"...Yes." He said, as he slowly and carefully lowering down his emotional walls. If Star was nervous, he was an inarticulate sphere of nerves that was somehow de-sphered into a humanoid form. "...That would be my answer, I think." He said, a small smile forming on his face.

"Oh." said Star, blinking up at Meglumar as he gave his answer. "Well, it looks like we'll have to find you a pretty best friend-slash-partner," she said with a bright cheerful smile as she looked away from Meglumar and leaned back against the tree. Long story short, Star was evil. And she was enjoying this way too much.

As she waited for a response, she considered her next move. What would be an appropriate Star-like way to react to this situation? Should she do what she usually did and tease him, or just go ahead and confess? Ah, decisions, decisions. It was amazing how much ideas suddenly sprang up when she was no longer worried about rejection.

...

Even MORE silence. "A...Ah. Yes." He said with a forced smile this time as his emotional defenses hardened. That was...not really the answer he was hoping for. His heart sank a bit at this, and he turned to face the sunset. Well, that was to be expected really.

Star was always one to mess with him. He guessed this was just another form of that. At least they'd still be friends, right?
