He ran. His legs carried him as fast as they could to what he hoped could be a safe destination. Not long ago, he woke up in a dumpster. He was lost, confused and hadn’t been drinking the night before. He wasn’t from this world. The last thing he remembers was shooting a serial killer who somehow could control the shadows and shape shift, then… there was darkness and he found himself in this particular situation. This felt like a dream, or rather an endless nightmare he couldn’t wake up from. He pinched himself, punched himself to wake up, but all he got was a bruise. This was real. The things that are after him are also real. He had to get away and chase after his sanity.

He was a trained police officer, one who was mentally and physically trained to handle high pressure situations, but being thrown into a forsaken world and fighting monsters wasn’t planned in the curriculum. He turned to the right into an alleyway. The darkness following him within, that’s when Ernesto met with the wall. He cursed out loud as he turned around.

This short fully equipped SWAT officer found himself trapped between a dead end and a bunch of shadowy monsters with bright yellow eyes that were approaching menacingly.

The situation sparked something in his mind. He snapped out of his state of fear and pointed his sub-machine gun at the humanoids shadowy things.

“Freeze! Move closer and I’ll shoot!” His voice was surprisingly stern and unyielding hiding most of the fear he currently felt. The monsters didn’t even flinch as they continued closer. Ernesto gave his warning, so he could shoot. He remembered to switch off the safety and let loose a burst of bullets. They were having some effect, succeeding in slowing them down, but they were still coming. He didn’t know whether it was because he was actually harming them, or if it was due to their sheer numbers. He had his back against the wall as he mumbled a prayer.

The creatures advanced on the trapped man, glowing yellow eyes fixed on their prey, his weapon slowing them down, but unable to stop the majority of them. As they drew closer, it seemed there was a sudden change in their actions. They halted, then looked up to the top of the building to their left, some of them having enough time to shriek before a dark shadow landed on top of one of them.

For a moment there was confusion among their ranks, the ones in front turning to see what had happened. Their confusion turned into cries of pain and terror as flames suddenly erupted in their midst, devouring them even as they fled.

Some tried to attack the source, but only succeeded on dying sooner. The ones who tried to escape were grabbed by flaming tendrils, like great blazing serpents dragging them back to a hellish death. One of them tried leaping at the man they had been after, only to be snatched in mid air and dragged across the ground towards the conflagration, screaming and clawing at the ground until it to was consumed.

After a moment that had seemed to last for minutes, the last of the things was dead, crumbling into a black mist. As it died, the flames did as well, till all that remained was a blackened area that stretched the width of the alley, the concrete cracked at the epicenter, where there stood a single man, dressed in black. Bits of green glinted in the dim light around the edge of a long black coat, as well as the sleeves. He turned toward the intended target of the Heartless, giving him his attention. "You alright?" He asked simply, remaining where he was, but turning to face him.

*click* *click* Ernesto’s eyes widened at the lack of bullets coming out of his submachine gun. The creatures were still closing in. He quickly fumbled to get another magazine when IT happened. The creatures of pure darkness were vanquished by an even bigger monster. He could only stand there in a combination of awe and fear. The empty magazine round fell to the ground as Ernesto frantically tried to load it.

He was both physically and mentally worn out. He was in a state of panic. This felt like an awful nightmare. He couldn’t concentrate the pain shrieks of the creatures echoed in his mind, was he going to be next?

He finally managed to load the new magazine into his gun and he aimed it at the human figure. He was going to shoot, but he heard the voice. Was this thing human? Did it just save him? This was the chance to get some explanations. This saviour wasn’t attacking him and could speak. The police officer cautiously stepped forward as he switched the safety on and lowered his weapon. He took off his helmet and his black balaklava to breathe and calm down.

“I’m alright” He said in a bit of a daze. “Where am i? Who are you? And what exactly just happened?” He pressed his palm against his forehead. So many questions…

Ganta watched as the man he had saved pointed his weapon at him for a moment, seeing to be unsure whether he was out of danger for a moment. Ganta had come to recognize a gun when he saw one, and he found them troublesome weapons to deal with. He had ways to deal with them, but they were almost more trouble than it was worth. Still, it seemed this time he wouldn't have to deal with it, since the man lowered the gun and removed his headgear.

It seemed that based on the questions he was being asked, this guy had only just arrived in the multiverse. The Heartless never seemed to quit their terrible quest. "This is called Traverse Town. It is something of a hub between different world and dimensions. You are no longer in the world you knew, though it may still be out there somewhere. This is a terminal to an endless amount of different worlds and realities." he hoped that wasn't too much for him to grasp, but he knew no other way of explaining it. "As for me, I am just a man who has suffered the same fate as you. My name is Ganta, I am a fire mage. As for what happened, I can only assume that you were dragged here through a portal created by the Heartless, which are those things I just killed. They are creatures born from darkness that prey on those who still possess a Heart."

Ganta knew that there was little chance this man would understand it all from the beginning, but he had nothing better to do, so he thought he might as well help this man who seemed to have fallen into the same dilemma he faced himself; trapped with no way of knowing how to get home.

« What the? »

He couldn’t grasp his explanation. Traverse town? Yeah, that part he buys; he saw yellow sign earlier, but he lost him when he talked about the different worlds and realities. This couldn’t be… This is the sort of fiction one would hear from movies, video games and comic books. How did he get here? Ganta mentioned the name of these creatures: heartless. It wasn’t enough for him, how did he get here?! What happened before he woke up in this place? He grasped his head.

“Damn! I can’t remember how I got here! I remember the darkness, then a flash of light and waking up, but… I can’t remember anything before that.” He shook his head and buried his face beneath his palms as he let out a frustrated sigh. Panicking is meaningless, he had to keep his cool resisting the urge to mentally collapse in front of this stranger. His eyes light up at a realization.

“They feast on hearts?” He could feel his heart skipping a beat. He saw flashbacks of various murders that occurred on his world, the victims had their hearts taken out and as far as their investigation went, they never did find where the hearts were. There had to be a link. Ernesto snapped from his trance.

“Oh I’m sorry. I’m Officer Ernesto E. Estrada part-time SWAT member. Thank you for saving me!” He saluted Ganta as he introduced himself. Not moving from his current position he asked. “Can these things be controlled?”

"They likely dragged you back to this world during an invasion of your world in search of Hearts to devour and create more of their own." The man was clearly struggling to grasp this, but he had to understand, or else he was going to end up very dead, very fast. Ganta needed to make sure the Heartless weren't able to get a hold of this guy and turn him into another one of them.

"No, at least not literally. They fill their victims Hearts with darkness, overwhelming them until they are nothing but creatures of shadow, and become part of the Heartless race." It seemed like so long since he had been the one receiving this same speech, having to learn all this information himself. He had not handled it much better than the poor soul standing in front of him.

He nodded as the man introduced himself, though what a Swat member was, he had no idea. His next question made Ganta's face go into a dark scowl. "No they cannot. They are mindless animals, acting on instinct. They are creatures of darkness, and only a more powerful creature of darkness can command them. If you are looking to follow that path, then I would be forced to kill you where you stand." The look in Ganta's eyes showed that he was dead serious, small tongues of flame appearing around his gauntlets. "These things are monstrosities that deserve only death. Even if they could be controlled, I wouldn't do it even to save my own life."

« Wait, don’t misunderstand. I don’t want to control these things, but they can be…” He trailed as he looked away. He started absorbing what he had been told. The darkness doesn’t feast on literal hearts then… They feast by swallowing in darkness? His memory sprang up slightly, he remembered. He did go through that, but why was he still alive? Shouldn’t he have been turned into one of these things?

“Why wasn’t I turned then? I remember being swallowed by darkness and…” He stopped as he focused on his memories. He was so close. It felt like it was on the tip of his tongue. He remembers the dark vines grasping his body and trying to restrain him. He also remembers breaking free and shooting at something.

He needed it to explain it out loud. It was so clouded and confused in his mind.

“I’m sorry for rambling. This is out of my reach. In my world there is nothing like this except in our TV programs, movies and comic books. I’m a police officer and the last thing I remember doing before I got here was investigating some bizarre murders...”

As he spoke the image unfolded in his mind. He remembered most of the investigation as he spoke. Perhaps understanding why he got here would help him return, though Ganta mentioned being stuck here too.

“ “The heartbreak killer” as the media called it,, went around murdering innocent civilians in their homes. Nobody was spared: women, men, children, the elderly… A true monster. I’ve… always wondered why he took their hearts but as you say these things don’t devour them literally…”

He crossed his arms. The killer was the reason why he was here.

“We caught up with that thing, and we were going to take it down.”
This is the part where his memory got hazy. He felt as he left out an important piece of information but he couldn’t think of anything.

“But… it got us instead. Two Special Weapons And Tactics squads were taken down by the darkness. I don’t know how, or even why I survived. I vaguely remember shooting the one responsible, but whether he survived or not; I don’t know…”

Ernesto sighed. It helped a bit to get it off his mind. His squad mates were dead and everything he ever knew and loved was probably fighting the darkness back in his world while he was stuck here. He kept those feelings bottled up.

“Is….is there a way to reverse the heartless effect?”
