It was almost weird. It was night (although it was always night in First District), she was heading home, and she still hadn't gotten into any fight. No Heartless, no random thugs on the street, nothing. Damon would probably be proud when she did get home, but that wasn't the only weird thing about tonight. It was weird that she was walking home with somebody. Not that she hadn't walked home with people before. Coryn liked to walk her places in the past, when he wasn't picking her up and carrying her anyway (she always did wonder why he did that so much). She and Kaede had walked to and from work a lot too, and Damon when Kaede wasn't there. She wasn't exactly a loner anymore either, so it wouldn't have been odd in high school. But it had been a while since she had traveled anywhere with anyone but herself. Especially not someone she had just met. It was just a little weird. "So this is Traverse Town," she told Yuu as they walked. "It's the Hub World. It connects all the other worlds. The sun doesn't come up here, it's always night. I'm not sure exactly how that works, but...that's what happens." Science had never been her strong point, but even she knew that a world wasn't supposed to be able to survive without sunlight. Traverse Town didn't seem to be a planet, though, just...a separate dimension. She didn't think it extended any farther than Third District. If it did, she didn't think she wanted to go out there. Third District was bad enough. "Headquarters of BOARD and Arcadia. There's a bulletin board in the square where people post up notices and that sort of stuff, when they're looking for someone or whatever. If there's anyone you want to find, you can check it out." |

Yuu was silent for the whole trip. Occasionally, if she looked, Chizu would see the boy grope for his pocket, find nothing but an empty box, then fall away. He didn't seem to NEED the cigarette, but it was more of an idle gesture than anything. He didn't even seem to care where he was. He didn't look at the scenery, only vaguely nodded when Chizu pointed something out. He had slipped back into that distant, glazed way of seeing the world. This world, this place... it was so depressing. He could feel the heartbreak and there wasn't even anyone close. The boy wanted very badly to make Chizu forcefully as calm as she could be, if only so he could use that calmness as a shelter... But that wouldn't be very nice at all. He just inhaled slowly, focusing on her words. It was maddening. He didn't really care about the dark world, or why the sun didn't come up, or how the world could live without sun... He needed something better. The girl went on thankfully, though, and he mumbled to her, breaking the long silence he had been holding. "Arcadia?" |

Out of all the things she had said, she was a little surprised that Arcadia was the only thing that stuck. She looked up at Yuu for a moment before nodding. Even after half a year of this, it still felt odd to talk about Arcadia in public. She was used to it being secret. It had, in fact, been one of her most closely guarded secrets. She kept it better than Kyrios in the end. But that was probably because she actually believed in Arcadia. "Yeah," she said. "They were originally formed back in Hyakuji to deal with supernatural threats, but they've been fighting Heartless a lot lately instead. Used to be top secret, now they're public...That's their headquarters over there." She gestured at the Fairy Tail Building as they passed it. It wasn't exactly only Arcadia's building. In fact, they had just borrowed it from Fairy Tail. But that wasn't too different from how things used to be, when Arcadia HQ was the mansion hidden behind Hiro Tsukasa's bookstore. Those were interesting days. Weird, but interesting. "I'm a member," she added, almost as if that was the least important part about everything she just said. She thought back to when she had first joined Arcadia. It had been a long time ago. She wasn't even the same person she was then anymore. Edited by Chizu, Mar 9 2010, 09:25 PM.

Supernatural threats, eh? Where the hell was he, anyway? What was this 'Hyakuji' that they needed an organization to deal with threats? Once more groping blindly for the cigarettes that weren't there, Yuu shoved his hand deeper into his pocket, trying to stop the pointless gestures. Top secret, used to be, at least, and she was a member. She had piqued the boy's interests, and he now looked at her with an eyebrow raised. "Tell me." Did he just have no manners? This had to have been about the eighth time that he had demanded without demanding an answer from her, but like always there was nothing but that normal, constant softness to his voice. He watched the girl for three or so more steps before he reached up and rubbed the bridge of his nose, pinching it softly as he closed his eyes. He needed sleep... But then again, when didn't he? He was always exhausted. |

Chizu shrugged. She still wasn't comfortable discussing Arcadia's inner workings with people. It felt wrong, somehow. Arcadia had been public for half a year, but it had been secret for much longer. She was already so used to not talking about it, keeping it secret, making excuses for where she had been the night before and so on. Of course, she supposed those secrets were worthless now. They were practically common knowledge. "It was started by Tsukasa-sensei--he's a teacher at Hyakuji--about a couple of years ago. Right now, though, it's under the leadership of Lavender Smith, we don't know where sensei is. Back home, we used to fight against magicians and demons and that sort of stuff..." What else could she say about it? It wasn't as if she was trying to recruit Yuu or anything. She was still too used to Arcadia not having to recruit, people got the dream and they came, or they didn't get the dream and didn't come. It was that simple. "It's divided into four divisions--Water does the research, Wind does the investigation before missions, Earth defends headquarters and Fire goes out and gets the target. I'm in Fire." One time, she would have said that Fire did all the work, but now she realized that they couldn't go out and fight anything if Wind hadn't already been there in the first place. |

Yuu was quiet as Chizu talked, listening to her but seeming to look off and away again. She wouldn't know it, but focusing elsewhere helped the boy to remember. He wanted to keep this in the back of his mind, wanted to remember there was a place to go if he was ever being chewed on by vampires or something of the sort. He still couldn't quite figure out what kind of place Hyakuji could be. It had needed years of protection from supernatural things. Magicians? Demons? Yuu snorted softly and shook his head as she finished, looking back to her quietly as if waiting for something else. When she didn't continue, he ran his fingers through his hair and let out a soft, 'Mmm' noise. He wanted to ask more, but what more was there to ask? That was the gist of it, wasn't it? He didn't want to be too nosy. After tucking his hand back into his pocket, Yuu mumbled softly to her, "How much further?" The boy was so back and forth. Edited by Yuu, Mar 11 2010, 09:53 PM.

Yuu didn't seem to want to hear any more, which was probably good. Chizu didn't think she had much more to tell him. She scanned the street. She had memorized her way home by now, although she was used to getting home at least in a little bit worse shape than she left. The worst case scenarios involved her dragging herself home, but that was only where Nobodies were involved. "...Couple more blocks," said Chizu, scanning the street. Most of the Traverse Town buildings looked the same. A few of them were crowded, particularly the shelters. She supposed she should have counted herself lucky. Damon had the money, and he wasn't going to leave her out on the street--or the two other stragglers they'd collected. She turned towards Yuu, wondering for a moment if he had any place to stay. "Hey," she said, "You staying somewhere?" Damon had said that they weren't going to take in any more strays, but she was pretty sure she could find somewhere that wasn't packed to overcrowding if she needed to. Hopefully somewhere still in First District. Second was a little more dangerous. |

Uh oh, he knew where this conversation was going. As nice as it'd be to have somewhere concrete to stay he had no desire to over stay his welcome. Or... to really be that close to other people. He was a bit of a loner, you see. So, without his empty face changing, without his tone shifting, Yuu mumbled a response. "Hotel," seemed easy and reasonable enough, right? It was sweet though, for the girl to offer him somewhere to stay. A stranger she barely knew.. How could she trust like that? How could she assume he was good? In a quick, liquid motion -- that might have been a bit surprising coming from a boy that always seemed to be sluggish -- Yuu's hand darted from his pocket. He gripped the girl by her wrist and took two quick strides toward her, trying to pin her against the near wall. He expected to get hit, but it didn't matter. He was trying to make a point. There was no real 'strength' in his gesture. He wasn't holding her wrist hard enough to hurt it, he was just holding her, holding it beside her head. She'd probably be aware now of how tall the boy was, looking down at her with those steel eyes, his brows knitted a little as his other hand remained in his pocket. For a moment, he just stood there staring at her, then softly he murmured to her again, "Why would you offer that? Why would you assume... why would you give me your number, your address? What if I was in that Wo Shing. What if I came to your home and killed you in your sleep?" He leaned in a bit closer, tilting his head to one side. "Why would you trust anyone in this shell of a world?" |

Chizu's muscles tensed as Yuu grabbed her wrists and she half-turned, putting herself in a position to strike back. She held her reflexes in check before she could hit him, but just barely, allowing herself to be pushed against the wall. Her eyes, though, had suddenly turned hard as she looked up at Yuu. If he was looking through her feelings, he would have felt the initial surprise, immediately followed by suspicion and irritation. No rage. Not yet. No fear, either. But she was glaring at him as he asked, caught between Yuu and the wall. The wall felt hard against her back. She doubted she would be able to escape there, if it came to that. But she wasn't worried. She had been in worse situations before and she knew how to get out of them. She tilted her head up to look at him. He was taller than she was, most people were. Guys anyway. It had been that way for as long as she could remember. People underestimated her because she was small and thin, not exactly bulky. It gave her the advantage of surprise, but at the same time, it denied her a few fair fights. Not that she cared too much about that. She raised an eyebrow at his comment, not making any move to retaliate yet. She was already weighing her options though. No fear. Just focus. She was obviously experienced at this. "I'm not afraid of you," she said. She spoke in a low voice, her tone level as she looked up at him with defiant eyes. She paused for a moment, considering his question. How could she trust people in a world like this? She glared at him for a moment. "...If nobody took a chance and trusted in me, I wouldn't be here right now. If...I didn't trust in anyone...if nobody trusted in anyone anymore, I would already be dead. This world would be dead. This..." she shook her head, her free hand shooting out to the side to gesture towards Traverse Town, back towards the Fairy Tail building and Arcadia. "...This wouldn't have any meaning." Chizu had been hurt so many times. Betrayed so many times. Abandoned so many times. It had come to the point where she had just wanted to hide away from the world so that no one could ever leave her again. So that she could never be hurt. But people had drawn her out of it, people that had given her life new meaning. Coryn. Kaede. Damon. It was because those people existed that she could believe in the rest of humanity. "...I guess...I just want to believe I'm fighting for something," she said. "That these people, this world, is worth protecting. But if you still want to prove to me that I can't trust everyone I meet, then step back, Yuu. I'll fight you here and now." Fire wasn't an emotion, but it was the best way to describe the emotion that suddenly flooded Chizu at that statement. All she had lost, all she had gained. The emotion was intense, and as Chizu looked up at Yuu, there wouldn't be any doubt that this was someone who would fight if she was challenged, and who would fight to hold on to whatever meaning she had found for herself. It wasn't anger. It wasn't hate. It was just...fire. Determination. Heat. She challenged Yuu with those eyes and those feelings, waiting for him to move. |

Yuu chuckled and shook his head a little, looking at her over the bridge of his glasses but he remained silent as she spoke, drinking in her emotions, testing them against her words. Testing the sincerity. Did she really have so much hope for a world like this? For worlds like these? For a place where no doubt some child was starving on the street, some wife or girlfriend was being abused, some man was being killed, never to return to his family. How could anyone have hope or faith in this? But, the blonde understood. He understood wanting to hope and pray and plead for there to be something more, something better. Some reason to go on. Though all that hope... "If I wanted to hurt you, I would have already," Yuu murmured, drawing his hand from his pocket and gently brushing it across the girl's cheek with a ghost of a smile on his lips. "I like you, Chizu. I just don't want to see you hurt." Silently, he released the girl's wrist and took several steps back, giving her more than enough space. Absently again, Yuu groped for the cigarettes that weren't there. He was sure the girl would be upset with him, but he had just been very curious. It was good to be straight to the point, right? And how better to be to the point than to bluntly grasp the person you want to talk to! Besides, it was faster that way than having a long, drawn out conversation. Yuu hated talking. The boy stared quietly at Chizu, waiting to see if he'd be slapped. Or worse. |

Chizu stiffened as Yuu touched her cheek with his hand. The motion was reflexive, as if she was preparing to fight. Surprise, slight irritation, confusion...those emotions would follow a few moments later. She looked up at him. He was so close. He was in her personal space now, and her instincts screamed at her to push him away. But she held them back. She relaxed a little as he released her, rubbing her wrist with one hand and watching him. She took a deep breath to compose herself. If Yuu was expecting a slap, it didn't come. Instead, Chizu turned to face him. The intense feeling was gone again, and when it was gone, she felt drained. "If I thought you wanted to hurt me, I would have broken your arm in three places already," she admitted, with as much nonchalance as if she were talking about the weather. He could read her emotions. She wasn't bluffing. She was simply stating something she believed was fact. She shrugged, placing her hands in her pockets and motioning towards Yuu with her head to continue walking down the street. She didn't repeat her question again, though. He obviously didn't want to answer it, and Chizu didn't want a repeat of what happened earlier. He didn't want to see her hurt...how many people had said that to her? She could count them on one hand. "...I'm good at taking care of myself..." she said quietly as they walked. |

"I know," He murmured simply, walking a half step behind the girl again, his shoulders pulled up and his body hunched over, no longer having the height he had just a few minutes earlier. His head remained forward, but she might notice the feeling of his eyes slowly slipping over to her occasionally. Reading her better, taking a gentle hold on her emotions and feeling which were pulled taunt and which relaxed. Measuring her the only way he knew how. In truth, when he didn't use his powers, Yuu felt completely helpless. He didn't know when others were mad at him, happy with him, upset with him. Yuu was, in short, socially retarded. They had been walking quite a while, and then softly, "I'm sorry." |

Chizu shrugged. "No harm, no foul," she said, looking back up at Yuu. She was a little annoyed, but then again a lot of things made her a little annoyed. She was very good at controlling it, for the most part. She looked up at him then turned away, her irritation already leaving. It was a good sign, she bore Yuu no lasting ill-will. "We're almost there," she said. They neared an area of First District that seemed to be more residential than anything else. Those people that had either been well-off enough to afford a house or apartment or lucky enough to arrive in Traverse Town before the shelters were filled lived here. The others...Second District. First District was almost full to bursting with people, and Second wasn't doing much better. "I live with my best friend," said Chizu as they walked, deciding it was best to get this part over with. She was a little surprised at how easily she would have substituted "best friend" for "brother" if she could. She and Damon looked similar enough that people often mistook them for siblings--at least they did, when Damon had been human. The fact that Chizu had been dating Damon's cousin made that particular line a little awkward. "He...well, before all this he used to look normal. But he's a shadowmancer, stuff happened. Now he looks like a Heartless. Sometimes people freak out...so...just letting you know ahead of time." |

Yuu remained silent as they walked, listening to CHizu's voice. No harm no foul, eh? She had seemed awful fouled up there for a bit, but she was right now... it was done. The boy's shoulders hunched and he scuffed along, nodding his head as she mentioned how close they were, and her...er... best friend. Shadowmancer would suggest he could control shadows -- duh -- but wouldn't he be able to control not being a shadow monster? It made Yuu uncomfortable, but he was sure that Chizu would have been hurt already if the boy... creature, whatever, was vicious. "Best friend?" He murmured, eyebrow cocking up. "Tell me about him." In Yuu's experience, when 'best friend' was linked to 'him' it normally meant something more was in the making... or had already been made. God forbid her 'best friend' get the wrong impression of him walking her home. Christ, that was ALL he needed. |

Chizu frowned. She wasn't very good at describing people to others, at least in a positive way. She thought about Damon. How could she really describe him anyway? "He's...well, he's a bookworm. Likes to read a lot. He can be a little bit annoying, sometimes it's like he can't make up his mind. Before he changed, we used to look a lot alike. People thought we were siblings." She shrugged her shoulders. "He was dating my best friend. I was dating his cousin. We became friends because of that...we argue a lot, but...we're pretty close, I guess." Her words were uncertain, but underneath it all, Yuu would be able to feel an underlying current of affection and protectiveness. She cared about this friend of hers, cared about him enough to fight for him. It was, undeniably, love. It was also undeniably platonic. There would never be anything romantic between her and Damon, but there was a very strong friendship. They really did seem almost like siblings. In a sense, she supposed they were. Both of them knew what it was like to be alone in the world. If they latched onto each other somewhere along the way...well, that was just part of life, wasn't it? She walked ahead of Yuu, a small smile on her face. |
