How long had he been sitting there? He'd long since lost count of the time. For countless hours Meglumar was sitting in a chair besides a bed, wherein lay his partner. She was alive. That was the only blessing he could count. Everything else from this encounter with the heartless had left the both of them in ruin. Star physically, and Meglumar emotionally. In his lap was Ein's sword, as well as his blindfold. All of Florencia was gone. Every single man, woman and child there were forfeit to the heartless. He was powerless to save them. Just as he was powerless to be there when his partner needed him most. He had sworn to protect her. Too make sure she was never hurt like that again. But here she was. Worse than before. God. Zeras. Whoever was out there. Whoever was willing to listen. What could he do to solve this? He put his face in his hands for a moment, trying to keep himself from collapsing into tears. All his years of training. His focus. Every last bit of it was useless. Useless compared to something of this scope, this magnitude. "Zeras ot remti. God help us. Anyone....help us." He said quietly to himself as he raised his head again. He glanced over to Star, still not awake. He placed his hand over hers. "....Please wake up soon. Partner." He said, simply. |

When Star opened her eyes, she half expected to be greeted by the sounds of battle in Shinya, lying on the ground in the crater she created and watching as everyone else fought. She had not expected to wake up in her room...or what she could vaguely call her room, in her bed, again what she could vaguely call her bed. It felt like just a second ago that she had closed her eyes. It also felt like forever. She opened her eyes slowly and looked around, her eyes finally landing on Meglumar's hand. It rested on top of hers. He was looking at her. On impulse--her brain hadn't yet caught up to the rest of her body--Star reached out her free hand, fingers lightly brushing against the side of his face. She brushed away strands of blond hair and let her hand stay there. The gesture could have been interpreted as more romantic than friendly and maybe that was true. Star wasn't entirely sure. But she didn't feel any of the usual negative feelings she felt when she thought about things like love lately. That was probably because her brain hadn't yet caught up to her. Although it was odd that she was lucid enough to think of that much. "Good..." she said slowly, "You're alive." The hand against his face trembled and Star closed her eyes, her expression contorting in pain for a moment. The pain wasn't physical. The hand fell away as she thought of what she had done in Shinya...of what she had become. She knew now why Lavender and Damon had spoken in hushed tones when she woke up in Arcadia. She had hurt people...people she hadn't been intending to hurt. She would likely do it again. She sucked in a deep breath, turning away to look up at the ceiling. Maybe it would have been better if someone like her had died in Shinya... |

Meglumar's eyes suddenly widened. He noticed Star's hand moving before anything else. He quickly looked to her, a look of surprise on his face, as plain as day. "St...Star..." He said, barely even able to speak at this. She was actually starting to wake up now? Her hand lay across the side of his face, her having displaced some of it as she did so. She simply said that he was alive, and that was good. Just as she did so, her hand fell. Meglumar caught it, however, before it fell to far. "Ye...Yes. And you are too." He managed to say, before tears formed in his eyes. "Thank goodness..." He said, in a very shaky tone. He couldn't stop the tears from coming anymore. He felt a great deal of sadness, of course. But, these tears were not over that. He could live with that pain and hold it in, without crying. But, this one single good thing was enough to push him over the edge. "Thank goodness." He said again, unable to think of what else to say. She was awake. She was alive. She was here. |

Star didn't ask. She never asked why Meglumar acted the way he did--why now of all times he had decided to show emotion. She never asked why he caught her hand in mid fall, why he was sitting there and crying now when he could take being displaced twice from a world he settled in without shedding a tear. She never once asked. Instead, she gave emotion free rein. She placed her free hand on his arm for support, pulling herself up to meet him. She pulled her other hand out of his and wrapped her arm around him, pulling her closer as she hugged him. Her hold was loose. She wasn't crowding him or smothering him, and if it weren't for the fact that she rested some of her weight on him in order to stay sitting, he might not have noticed her at all. But she was there, and he could read that however he wanted. Take from that whatever he needed. And in the end, Star couldn't even claim that her motives were completely altruistic, because in the end just as much as he needed her, she needed him. Probably more. Because in the end, while she wanted to support him, she also wanted to take from that enough to support her. Because in the end, no matter what else she was, she was human, and so was he, and humans when broken needed each other. |

Ein's sword fell to the ground as Star hugged Meglumar, with a small clang. He returned the hug. It was a nice feeling. Knowing his partner was alive. Knowing she was safe. Holding her like this was a reassuring way of knowing she was alright. For once, he felt something was just...right. A very odd feeling considering what he'd been through, what he'd been feeling. A good 5 minutes passed before he even spoke again. "I was worried about you." He said, loosening his hug slightly. "I heard how bad Shinya got...I...I am so sorry. I should have been there for you. But right now...I am just....very grateful, very...happy that you are alright." He said simply. |

Shinya... She didn't want to think about Shinya. Didn't want to think about what she had become back then...or why. She didn't want to think about who or what she was, but no matter how hard she tried, the memories wouldn't go away. She remembered being part of the light for just one moment--that was the pleasant part. She remembered being pulled apart by the light. That was more unpleasant. And the part about her attacking everyone? Unpleasant would have been an understatement. But it felt so long ago. Safe. She realized she felt safe. Here. With him. With him holding her. Safety was so rare here and so precious and she found that she never wanted to let it go. She just wanted to stay here and wanted him to keep holding her. She wanted...she didn't know what she wanted, and if she did, she wouldn't say it out loud. But that security was quickly replaced by something else. Guilt. Because she wasn't supposed to be like this. This...dependent on someone. She wasn't supposed to need anyone. She wasn't supposed to have to need anyone...but she needed this. Like breathing. She began to tremble. This close, she knew that he could feel it. She pressed her face into his chest and when she spoke, her voice was muffled. "...not your fault..." she said, "...you did what you could...you were busy..." But I wanted you there...needed you there... She didn't say it because somehow she knew that the lies she built her entire life on wouldn't work here. Not while she was like this, and even when she knew that omission was a form of lying it was still easier than saying what wasn't true. |

Star wasn't the only guilty one now. He was too. As she leaned into his chest, his arms tightened around Star again as she trembled. "...It's no excuse. I was useless there anyways." He said, closing his eyes. The darkness. It consumed everything, and there was nothing he could have done to stop it. If he'd just been there for Star, if he'd been there to help her... "...I don't what comes up. I am never leaving you when something like this happens. I don't care if it's an order from Arcadia itself. You come first. I will never let this happen again. I swear it. On my life." He said, completely sincere. He would protect this girl with his life. He didn't know why. Yes, she was his partner, and surviving in this world alone would be hard. But, he could not justify those two as the only reasons. He only could tell this much: He needed Star. He didn't know why, he didn't know how he knew, he just knew that. |

Take me away...away from here...away from this... It was beyond his powers and the logical side of Star knew that. She knew that he couldn't take her out of this reality. There were some things he couldn't do for her, even if he wanted to. But he told her that he wouldn't leave her and she believed him. She wanted to believe him. She clung to that like it was a lifeline, because although she wouldn't admit it tomorrow, she was afraid of being alone. She took in a deep breath, a shuddering breath that made her shoulders shake as she breathed in. She didn't want to be alone. Not again. She didn't want to be alone in that. Save me...save me from this... She wouldn't say it. Not out loud. She would never say it because she couldn't. Some people liked to be physically independent, but they never let go of their close ties. Star...she didn't make them. She liked it when other people helped her out physically, but her emotions were her own. Her mind was always very much her own, and no one else was privy to what it contained. Because she was stronger than that, and she was better than that... But she wanted it now, and it made her feel guilty. She wanted to let go. She let out the breath she had been holding and pressed deeper into the embrace. Star glowed for an instant, but it was just an instant, and suddenly everything would become clear. Barriers came crashing down and Meglumar would be able to feel all of Star's emotions as acutely as if they were his own. He would know they were hers, though. He would be able to tell. Fear, guilt, longing, anger...a confused jumble of emotions would course through him at once. It worked both ways, but only if he allowed it to. |

Meglumar's eyes widened as Star seemed to get even closer to him. A strange light came off of her, and then....it was as if a flood had hit him. So many MORE feelings thrown into the mix. He could tell they were not his. They were Star's. So much pain, so much guilt, so much...everything. There was so much of it going on through his head he could barely keep it on straight. He looked down at her, wondering how she was able to keep all of that bottled up inside her. To keep all of that within herself, then to feel guilty about wanting this? This...was not right. He was her partner. Like he had just said, he would always be there for her. He felt it was only fitting that Star knew she wasn't alone in all of this. Just as she opened up to him, she would find his emotions would be felt by Star. The intense pain and sorrow from watching all of Florencia become destroyed. The guilt for not being there for Star in her time of greatest need. The joy he felt at her being alright. And the longing to help her through this time of difficulty. His grip around Star tightened as he looked into her eyes. "Never feel guilty. I am here. For you." |

Star's breath caught in her throat. She had always complained that Meglumar didn't have emotions--had always thought that he didn't feel. It was a stupid assumption on her part, because when it came to that, how was she any different? Feelings had always been things she kept to herself, things she never shared with anyone. Star was a person who gave the impression of being open and outgoing when in truth she was probably the biggest loner of them all. She spoke with people, interacted with them, lived in their day-to-day lives, but it had always been surface talk. Always fake...always controlled... She had always been good at that... She should have gone to Hollywood. Or Broadway. She might have won some awards. The thought was bitter, and Meglumar might notice the sudden bitterness that stabbed once into Star's feelings before slowly fading into the background, although he wouldn't know why. She took a deep breath as she held back against the wave of pain coming from Meglumar. For the first time, she noticed the sword. Ein's sword. "Florencia..." she said quietly, withdrawing from him so that she could see his face. |

"It's gone." A voice said from the door. Standing there was Damon, holding a folder full of papers. A tired look on his 'face.' "Every native to Florencia is gone. We're lucky our operatives are all here. Apparently while we were dealing with a near world loss, the minor forces were kept completely away by a diversionary tactic. They were sent in undermanned, underequipped, and are lucky to be alive." Meglumar's face glanced down at the ground, an empty feeling filling him. Luck. Pft. He was lucky, yes. But he also felt ashamed for being useless. No power he had could have done anything to change the events that befell Florencia. He looked down to the sword as well, before closing his eyes. How was he supposed to do as Ein asked? How was HE supposed to protect other worlds when he could not save the one? Damon, meanwhile walked up to the two. "In light of Shinya's occurrence, It's been decided we need to tell you exactly what is going on with you, and what precautions have been taken, and will be taken around you. And only you." He said before glancing to Meglumar. He was NOT cleared to know this. |

Gone... Star's eyes widened slowly as she looked past Meglumar at Damon. Florencia was...gone? She couldn't believe it. For a moment, she wondered if things would have gone differently had she been there. All those people...What did it matter if she could save Niwa and Shinya but not Florencia? More than Florencia, Niwa deserved to-- Star quickly pushed down against the wave of rage, stopping the thought before it could fully form. That was wrong. People, no matter how bad they were, deserved a chance to make things right. And not everyone in Niwa was bad, just like not everyone in Florencia was good. She clung to the thought like a lifeline as she nodded at Damon, leaning back against her pillows. She was tired again. She just wanted to go back to sleep, but she knew that she had to hear this. She had suspicions, but this time, she wanted to know for sure. She caught Damon's glance at Meglumar. "He stays," she said, her voice hardening. She looked up at him as if daring him to challenge that. Meglumar...Meglumar wasn't leaving her side. She wouldn't let him. |

Damon groaned. Oh good lord no. No. She wasn't going to make this tough for him, was she? That would mean weeks of paperwork! But, it looked like, from her tone, he had no chance of winning. He winced at this. Meglumar meanwhile, was pleasantly touched by how Star seemed adamant about him staying. He wasn't surprised bu the notion of it, but rather by how....forceful she was, especially dealing with this Damon. This Damon kind of scared him. He was like a heartless, but like a human. It was very...odd. Damon: Handed Star the file, so she could look through it. "Fine. Long story short. You're not a human. Not entirely. Your DNA is one quarter elemental. It's dangerous to you if you're not trained right. You could end up killing everyone around you if you lose control. Someone placed a seal on you, but you broke that in Shinya. I fixed it with the surge of power I got, and then some." "Furthermore, as the expert on Elemancy here...I have to keep a watch of you. So you're with me." He said tossing her a key. "Sadly." |

Star didn't flip through the file. Instead, she set it on the bedside table. She looked resigned as Damon spoke, as if that confirmed all of her suspicions. "Helios..." she murmured, leaning back in her seat as she traced the outline of the cross beneath her clothes. It explained so much--why he was so protective over her, why he was with her ever since she was little, why she had his hair and his eyes. She should have spotted it in the beginning. But if it wasn't broken, why fix it? She just wanted to believe that the people she actually trusted didn't have any dirty little secrets. Even though it made sense. Helios and Grandma Gianna... "I guessed," she said with a slight shrug as she caught the keys. "Meglumar too." She said it with the same force as earlier. She didn't care that she didn't have the power to carry out the unspoken threat right now. Star was the wrong person to anger, because she didn't need photomancy to make someone's life hell. Not that she was seriously considering doing that to Damon. She just would refuse to leave. |

Damon winced. Okay. This was going to suck. He was not going to like this, But he could TELL that star was going to make this impossible for him. He turned around shaking his head. "You're the one who has to explain to Chizu why I have 2 new people in my little homeless shelter to be." He said, resigning himself to this fate. "Just focus on getting better soon." He finished before walking out. Teenagers and their stupid hormones. He was glad to be an Elemental sometimes. ~*~*~*~*~*~ ...Well this was a surprising turn of events. Star wasn't entirely human? He wasn't quite sure what to think on that. He was slightly bewildered, especially since they apparently just got free housing. What was next? were they magically going to find jobs, or gain a lot of munny? "..." He stayed silent for a moment, unsure what to say. He was still feeling...odd. And feeling. And he wasn't sure, but he thought he could feel Star as well. "I...suppose things...are starting to look up from here?" He said, with a small smile. Thing really only could look up from here, really. Even though they were just in the darkest times they had been in, they were already starting to pick up. Star had answers. They had a place to call home. They were closer as a team. They were alive. She was alive. Just knowing that made him feel...happy. |
