A gust of wind shook the nearby trees, the smaller ones bending easily in the wind, while the larger trees bent lethargically, groaning slightly. The loose leaves went spinning into the air and over the ground below, scattering across the hillsides that dotted the area. The land they flew across was nothing but hills, some barely deserving of the name, others seeming to stretch the accuracy of the term in describing them. Some held thin clusters of trees, others were dotted with low shrubs, and others only the high green grass they all shared. The grass rippled like waves on the sea as the wind blew, making the hills look like great emerald breakers ready to crash down onto the land around them. The grass shifted in color across the expanse of the hill country, each one seeming to be a slightly different shade, and all were speckled with white, blue, yellow, and every color of wildflower. All of this seemed to blend together into a bright blanket that seemed to sing with life. Above it all, the sky seemed to challenge the brightness of the great emerald expanse with a stunning blue ceiling, dotted with cottony clouds like wispy pillows drifting through the great blue sea of air. In this sea also floated the sun, shedding its rays of light and warmth down onto it all, the warmth balancing with the coolness of the breeze. The sight would be enough to take anyone's breath away and leave them feeling a sense of safety and warmth like the embrace of a mother. Amid this heart-moving view, a single man sat, silently looking up at the land before his head dropped again to the canvas held up in his lap by a smooth leather strap. a small wooden box filled with glass bottles rested on the grass beside him, clinking slightly from the wind and causing the colorful contents to slosh around inside. In one hand, a palette with smears of colorful paint sat, while in the other a brush sat poised over the canvas. Ganta looked over the landscape again, and the brush touched the tightly stretched fabric, marking it for a few moments before rising again. The image before him slowly took shape as the brush rose and fell. Ganta could not recall a time when he had felt so calm and content, at least, not since he had been taken from his home. But his place, it was so much like the land he had grown up in. The trees, the flowers, the grass, much of it was just like his home. He had felt homesick when he first saw this green country, but now he felt that same peace of mind his home had provided. It was like he had been revived by this new place, being granted the strength to return to the labyrinth of new worlds to find his homeland. He gave a contented sigh and looked back over the world in front of him, taking joy in the quiet solitude that surrounded him. |

Yumi knew she was on Florencia. Like the good detective-in-training she was (or used to be at least, before her rift with Jameson...), she had worked it out. Although she had never been to this section of the world, she somehow innately recognised this as the same world on which her first Arcadia mission had taken place. Quite apart from Jameson's description of the countryside, Yumi had come to realise in her travels that each of the worlds in the new multi-verse had their own unique resonance, a vibe that you could feel deep inside. It was the familiarity of the feeling resonating within her that told her, beyond a shadow of a doubt, where she was. But having once established her location, the girl proceeded to gape in wonderment at the sheer beauty of her surroundings. This landscape could not be more different from the sinister and dank Havenstorm Forest that she had previously explored. There, she had felt unsafe but for her Arcadian comrades by her side. But this place... this was... this was something else. Yumi was sure that any description of paradise attempted by man would have to include something of this view. As she wandered without any real purpose through the countryside, relishing the feelings of the knee-high grass brushing against her legs, and the crisp breeze blowing through her hair, Yumi had a sudden, unexpected desire to somehow record what she was experiencing, to share with her friends at a later time. Unfortunately, however, she lacked any means of doing so. Her camera was gone; lost into the ether along with the rest of Hyakuji world. So what choice did she have? The girl burnt the breath-taking view solidly into her memory, determined to give whomever desired it such a vivid description of the place so as to make them almost believe themselves to have been there along with her. Without any warning, the girl suddenly found herself to have stumbled across another human being - one who seemed to have the same desire as her, but without any such restriction of means. The man sitting before her appeared lost in his work, and Yumi too found herself captivated by his portrayal of their surroundings. They remained like that for several moments, frozen, before Yumi realised she had better make her presence known. Clearing her throat softly, she addressed the painter before her with a warm smile. "Pardon me, sir... but that's a pretty spectacular piece you're working on there. Have you been working on it for long?" |

Ganta's mind was enveloped in the calm embrace of the scene in front of him, his usually excited or troubled heart at ease for the first time in what seemed like an eternity. There was no war, no Heartless, no labyrinth of worlds standing between him and his home, there was just this place in front of him. This was real and tangible, making everything else between his abduction from his home and now seem quite ephemeral. It was the first time he had been able to sit still and just be alive. He let his brush trace languidly over the canvas before his, slowly covering the stretch of white with increasing amounts of green and blue, dotted with bits of white and yellow and purple. He had never had the skill with a brush that others had possessed, he was at least more than simply competent, and he was growing increasingly pleased with the results of his effort. Perhaps it was this peaceful feeling he got from this place that allowed him to truly pour his soul into the work before him. He was not terribly concerned with the why's or hows, pleased merely by the simple fact that he was capturing this scene. He smiled slightly as he heard a soft female voice behind him, face still facing his painting. "Pardon me, sir... but that's a pretty spectacular piece you're working on there. Have you been working on it for long?" He dipped his brush into a glass bottle filled with water that had become clouded with excess paint. "I was wondering when you were going to speak." He replied quietly, taking the brush from the water and dabbing on a paint-stained cloth before setting it in a small cup with his other brushes. He turned his head, smiling gently at his visitor, his green eyes seeming to have drawn in the color of the landscape. He brushed his black hair out of his face after the wind caught hold of it. "I appreciate the compliment, and honestly, I have no idea how long I have been sitting here, I suppose I got a little caught up in the scenery." He took the leather strap around his neck off, setting the painting down on the grass beside him. He stood up slowly, his legs a bit stiff from sitting in the same spot for so long. "Though I didn't expect to meet anyone out here." He said, turning his smile to her once again when he was sure he had sure footing on the slope of the hill. |

"I was wondering when you were going to speak." Yumi recoiled in surprise at the man's words. So he had known she was standing there, even without turning around? An impressive feat. But then again, in such a tranquil place, with a total absence of life, she supposed that even the slightest noise that she might have made would have alerted the stranger to her presence. Particularly if he had been sitting in that pose for many hours, becoming totally in tune with his surroundings. His next words confirmed that this was the case. As he was standing up, Yumi took a moment to note just how comfortable the man look in this setting. Contrasting it to the manner in which she had gawked her way through the terrain, the girl thought ruefully that her foreign-ness was all too obvious. Was this painter then a local of this world? It was entirely possible. Then again, his presence here, so far from any civilisation, yet so near to the very crossgate that she herself had arrived through... suggested that he too was originally from another world. "...Though I didn't expect to meet anyone out here," the man was saying. Yumi let out a small chortle of amusement, before agreeing with him. "No, it's not exactly a well-trodden path out here... to be honest, I didn't expect to be here myself. I just kind of slipped through a crossgate back home by mistake and next thing I knew I was here..." The girl paused for a moment, her face showing that she was momentarily perplexed. "But you know, I could have sworn I'd already worked out where all of the portals in my area were... hrm." Shaking her head as if to clear it, she smiled and abruptly changed the topic, realising suddenly that this man may very well have no idea what she was talking about. "So, sorry for not mentioning it before, but my name is Yumi. As you may have gathered already from my ramblings, I'm a traveller here, originally from another world. Unfortunately it was destroyed though... I've been based in an intermediate world ever since." The effervescent girl paused to let her words sink in before adding, "What about yourself? What's your story, if you don't mind me asking?" She was genuinely intrigued by this stranger, this man who blended in so well with these surroundings, yet was probably as foreign to them as she, this painter who recorded what he observed with such skill. He was an enigma, a puzzle that the budding detective inside Yumi was keen to solve. |

He saw the curiosity in her face after he had mentioned being aware of her presence. He was sure she was puzzling out how he had known she had been standing behind him that whole time. Actually he had known the exact time when she arrived as well. He thought he might tell her a little later, if she was curious enough to ask. He wanted to see what her guess might be as to the proverbial eyes in the back of his head. Whereas he seemed to be part of the world they both stood in, she seemed a bit out of place. She wore what he could only assume was a school uniform, which looked good on her, but her to emphasize that she was a visitor to this world as well. She also seemed to be a little wide-eyed from the view of the landscape. He didn't hold that against her though, he had spent the first several minutes staring as well, gawking like a wide-eyed child. But he had quickly settled into his surroundings . He listened quietly as she told about her own arrival here, finding that she had gotten there in much the same way he had. He guessed it must have simply good fortune that he had run into someone friendly who had been tossed into the strange half-way point between worlds. He smiled a little wider as she seemed to change the subject, realizing that he might not understand what she was talking about. Luckily, he fully understood. "What about yourself? What's your story, if you don't mind me asking?" It seemed it was Ganta's turn to play the storyteller. I'm Ganta Mizuro. As for my story, I got here the same way you did, through that same cross gate, though I didn't know I would end up here." He briefly looked over the landscape, his eyes suddenly distant, a touch of sadness entering them for a moment before he was smiling at Yumi again. "I was dragged out of my own world as we were sealing out the Heartless, so now I'm stuck between the worlds as well. This place... its just like back home, the same trees, same flowers, but still... different." He turned his eyes to the landscape, and that profound sadness lingered in them once more. He was silent for a moment, then seemed to come out of a trance, remembering that he was not alone there, and that it was rude to be so down-hearted in front of her. "Sorry, got a bit lost in my own thoughts for a minute there." |

"I'm Ganta Mizuro. As for my story, I got here the same way you did, through that same cross gate, though I didn't know I would end up here." Ganta Mizuro. It was an interesting name, with a Japanese sound. Yumi wondered momentarily if this revealed his ethnicity, but quickly realised that as she herself was evidence, in a globalised world, and even more so in a multiverse, it was easy for names to not match birthplaces. The touch of sadness evident in Ganta's eyes for a moment as he thought of home supported her theory that it was in some far away place. "I was dragged out of my own world as we were sealing out the Heartless, so now I'm stuck between the worlds as well. This place... its just like back home, the same trees, same flowers, but still... different." ...Some far away place that was apparently exactly like the world they were in now, it seemed. What a fall of luck for Ganta that he had ended up in a place that reminded him so much of home! Or maybe it wasn't so lucky... as Yumi observed the incredible sadness that had returned to his gaze, she thought it might have been better for him to discover a world that was totally different, such as EXE or Legacy. At least then the bitter-sweet memories would not be so poignant; the pain not so pronounced. The girl found it most interesting, however, to hear that the people of his world had actually succeeded in sealing out the Heartless. Unlike Hyakuji, which had been attacked with no warning, giving its citizens no chance to fight back... there had been only two options for the people of her world, and they had not been voluntary: be sucked up into the multiverse, or die. It was obvious what her fate had been. Her parents and loved ones had not been so lucky. Yumi had almost forgotten Ganta was there, but when he spoke again it was obvious the same had happened to him. "Sorry, got a bit lost in my own thoughts for a minute there." "It's fine, I was off in my own world too," she replied. Literally, she thought, suppressing an inappropriate giggle. She mentally reprimanded herself sharply, then relented, supposing it to be her body's way of relieving tension. "I have to say though, you're quite lucky..." the girl's eyes were glazed over, her thoughts obviously still far away. "You may be separated from all your friends and family, but at least you know that they are alive, and safe from any future Heartless attack." She paused for a moment, steeling herself for the harsh truth of her next words. "The people of my world were not so lucky." After a few moments, Yumi cleared her throat and attempted to lighten the mood. As pleasant as their current location was, it made little sense to continue sitting there aimlessly, without access to food or shelter. "Do you think we should get going then?" she queried politely. "I don't really know my way around here, so it would probably be best to explore a bit before it gets dark. Unless you already have...?" she trailed off, unsure about just how long Ganta had already been in this world. Perhaps it was days, or even months, and he already had a place to call home in this world that reminded him so much of his real one. Either way, she would soon find out. |

Ganta's heart went out to Yumi is she told about the fall of her own world to the Heartless' rampage. He could only imagine what it must have been like to arrive in this multiverse and realize everything you had known was wiped out for good. He had heard plenty of horror stories from others who had lost their homes and loved ones in the attack, and while mostly he sympathized with them, a tiny shred of himself envied them. While they had lost everything, they also had that closure that came from something being gone for good. Ganta had no way of knowing whether he would ever see his family and friends ever again. Sometimes the thoughts of them being out there waiting for him gave him hope to keep going on. Yet other times it felt like the universe were mocking him, dangling this minute chance in front of him like a carrot on a string. He tried not to feel that way, knowing it was selfish and a terrible thing to think. "I'm sorry you had to go through that." He said in what he hoped was a comforting tone of voice. For a moment it was silent, both of them seeming to want to move away from the depressing topic they had found themselves on. Ganta was relieved when she cleared her throat and started talking about finding shelter. Ganta hadn't noticed before because of their conversation, but the sun had begun to set, and he would need someplace to stay until he could come back the next day and finish his painting. He was distracted by the gorgeous view once again, now bathed and a rich amber glow as the sun made its slow descent towards the hills below. He recalled she had asked him about shelter and turned back to Yumi. "I'm afraid I don't have a house or anything to stay in, but I did come across a rather large cave after I arrived here where I left the rest of my things. If you don't have any objections we can go there." He didn't know whether she would be apprehensive about staying in a cave with a guy she just met, but it was the best he could do under the circumstances. He let her consider it while he knelt down to begin putting away his paints and brushes, latching the wooden box shut when everything was in its proper place. He stood back up, box in one hand, and the canvas in the other. |

"I'm sorry you had to go through that," Ganta replied solemnly when she told him of Hyakuji's destruction. And somehow, she could tell that he truly was. Sorry, that is. Everything about this man screamed sincerity. Instinctively, Yumi felt she could trust him. Which was why, when he suggested a cave as their shelter for the night, the girl did not immediately reject the suggestion as she might have done had it come from any other stranger. As Ganta knelt down and began packing up his things, Yumi observed him carefully. She was a fairly good judge of character, so she was ready to trust her first instincts. However, it never hurt to make sure. Watching him closely, Yumi could detect no twitches or menacing movements to suggest an ulterior motive. He genuinely seemed to be a lost soul, travelling the worlds, just like her. Satisfied, she nodded. "I'll go to this cave with you," the girl confirmed. It wasn't like she had anywhere better to take shelter. It was too late to look for anything herself, and she doubted that she would find anything better in this sweeping, open countryside. Yes, she would go to this cave with Ganta tonight, and then on the morrow she would have to start looking for a way back to Traverse Town. Beautiful as this world was, she didn't fancy staying there too long. Besides, there were people back home that she wanted to see... Jameson, to apologise... and Nickle, to... well, she wasn't exactly sure what Nickle was all about. Somehow though, she just wanted to see him. As Ganta finished picking up the last of his things and straightened up, Yumi smiled at him. "Shall we get going then? Lead the way, good sir!" Her friendly tone was aimed at hopefully breaking the ice between them a little more. If they were going to be spending the night in close proximity to one another, they had better at least get along. |

He smiled and nodded as she agreed. He knew that she was putting a lot of trust in him, and he greatly appreciated that fact. He shifted the canvas slightly on its strap before he was satisfied he wasn't going to drop it. "Its down this way, come on." He took her hand and started walking down the side of the hill. He knew it might seem odd to her, holding her hand like that, but the grass here was thick and it was easy to trip over hidden rocks or small depressions in the ground, having learned this the hard way when he first made his way up here. "It can be tough getting down this, so make sure you have good footing." He led her cautiously down the slope, the thick grass tickling at them as the breeze caught it. It was starting to feel a little cooler as the sun continued to make its slow passage down towards the horizon. Once it started to level out he let go of her hand, thinking she was probably tired of him holding onto it. The reached the bottom as the sun just started to touch the horizon, the light falling on a cluster of trees surrounding a small mound just ahead of them. "Alright, its just up ahead." He said, and walked across the short stretch of flat ground between them and their shelter. In no time they were standing in front of the small cave that opened up the side of the little hill. "Here it is, home away from home." He stepped away from the entrance and beckoned her in. "After you Miss Yumi." He said in a humorously formal tone. |

"Its down this way, come on," Ganta encouraged, then took her unawares by taking her hand in his. For a moment Yumi stiffened, fearing that her trust had been misplaced, but she quickly relaxed as she realised he was merely trying to chivalrously lead her through the difficult terrain. She appreciated the gesture; although she was normally the type of girl who liked to fend for herself, it was still nice to be looked after once in a while. Yumi watched her surroundings with care and interest as they descended the slope, feeling the cool breeze with pleasure as she gazed on the slowly setting sun. This truly was a spectacularly beautiful country. She had never seen something so picturesque in her life. The entire scene looked like it could have come out of a fairy story. It was no wonder Ganta was trying to paint it; the view just begged to be captured and recorded. Before long however, they had reached the bottom, and Yumi was grateful when her companion released her hand. "Alright, its just up ahead," Ganta announced, and they picked their way through the last of the terrain before the cave suddenly loomed up in their vision. As he joked about home away from home, Yumi inspected her shelter for the night with attentive interest. It was an unassuming little cave, away from a direct line of sight of any who approached but still large enough for their purposes. It looked sturdy enough as well - the last thing Yumi wanted was for the roof to cave in on them as they slept. But it all seemed fine. Smiling, the girl nodded. "This looks nice enough," she approved, before accepting Ganta's invitation to step inside. The interior was well insulated, so she was pleased to feel her goosebumps from the chilly outside air receding. Naturally, she had neglected to bring a blanket or anything of the like, not knowing that she would be spending the night in an unfamiliar world, so she began looking around the cave for tools she could improvise with. In one corner she found a patch of springy moss, which she promptly decided to use as a pillow for the night. Settling down on the floor by her pillow, Yumi sat with her back leaning against the rock wall behind her, and watched as Ganta entered the cave and went about his own preparations for the night. She was happy to wait until he had finished for him to start the conversation, however. This whole sharing a cave with a stranger thing was more than a little awkward, but Yumi hoped that they would be able to make a little more conversation before they went to sleep to try to break the ice between them a bit more. |

Once she had gone inside and settled herself, Ganta focused on his things. He set the box of painting supplies against the wall of the cave, next to his black drawstring bag he had left there earlier. He set his canvas down gently beside it, making sure it wasn't damaged in any way. Once that was done he walked over to a small pile of wood he had gathered earlier in case he ended up staying the night. Since that had become the case, he grabbed several larger pieces and arranged them in a workable pile. Luckily for them, the mouth of the cave was wide enough to keep the smoke from building up inside the cave. He sat down in front of it and looked back at Yumi. "This might startle you a bit." He said cryptically before turning back to the wood. He put his hands together in an odd gesture, his thumbs, index fingers, and pinky fingers pressed together for a moment. He let his hands drop to his lap before taking a deep breath, and blowing out a small jet of intense flames. The flames shot from hs mouth for a few second and then just stopped, leaving a crackling fire in front of him. "That's better." He commented before looking back at Yumi's surprised face. "I guess I should have mentioned that I'm a fire mage." He motioned towards the fire, inviting her to sit across from him. "This should help us stay warm, but if you need more, there is a blanket in my bag that you're welcome to use." If there was one thing his mother had drilled into his brain, it was being polite to girls. That old upbringing never went away. |

Once Ganta had sorted out his art supplies, he busied himself with a pile of wood which he had obviously prepared earlier. Watching curiously, Yumi was just beginning to wonder how he planned on lighting the fire without any visible matches or the like when Ganta spoke. "This might startle you a bit," he warned, before turning back to the wood, making a few gestures with his hands and unexpectedly blowing fire out of his mouth. "That's better." He said, then turned back to look at her. "I guess I should have mentioned that I'm a fire mage." Yumi was surprised, but not shocked. She had seen such an array of magical powers since enrolling at Hyakuji and joining Arcadia that she was most than used to unnatural abilities these days. And arguably, firebreathing was a lot less frightening than her own ability to blow things up. XD "It's fine, that kind of thing doesn't faze me any more," she assured him, smiling. Ganta motioned towards the fire, apparently inviting her to sit across from him. She accepted with pleasure, quite keen to get near the fire's heat. The cave might have been warmer than the cool outside air, but it wasn't that warm. The offer of a blanket was also more than welcome. Yumi got cold easily. Pulling the item in question out of the bag Ganta had referred to, she wrapped herself in the blanket then made herself comfortable once more around the fire, before beginning to speak. "So, if you don't mind me asking, what are you plans for the future? I mean, I'm guessing you want to try to get back to your world, right? I know that's what I want to do." Yumi paused, trying to gauge his response. "If so, I would suggest travelling with me back to Traverse Town. That's a world that seems to be connected to every other. There are crossgates all over the place leading to all the known worlds. If there's anywhere that's going to help you get closer to home, Traverse Town would be it." Yumi nodded encouragingly before sitting back to see what he would say. |

"It's fine, that kind of thing doesn't faze me any more," Ganta nodded. "Glad to hear it." He could have just started a fire without the wood, but it would have required him to focus on keeping it the same size and keeping it burning, which would have been a nuisance. It was easier just to start the fire then let it burn naturally. He watched her as she threw quite a few questions his way. He was glad that she had a way to keep things from deteriorating into awkward silence. "You're right about that, I would like very much to get back to my home, and I plan on going back there. As for what I'll do after that... I'm not really sure. I might end up joining one of the mage's guilds, I'm sure someday I'll find a nice girl and get married, start a family, and just enjoy the life I've been given." He nodded as she spoke of the cross gates and Traverse Town. "I've been doing that ever since I got to this multiverse. I spend most of my time in Town, looking for cross gates." He looked into the middle of the fire for a few moments. "I've lost count of all the cross gates I've been through." He looked back up at Yumi. "What about you? What are you planning on doing with your life now?" |

With them both now settled comfortably around the fire, Ganta began to answer her questions. "You're right about that, I would like very much to get back to my home, and I plan on going back there." Yumi nodded. It made sense. "As for what I'll do after that... I'm not really sure. I might end up joining one of the mage's guilds, I'm sure someday I'll find a nice girl and get married, start a family, and just enjoy the life I've been given." Wow. Yumi couldn't believe he was talking about marriage and babies. He didn't look that much older than her, and she couldn't even picture herself with a boyfriend at this point in time. The girl was certainly impressed with his brevity and serious outlook on life. Any man of his age who was already contemplating settling down implied a dependable character, someone stable who could be relied upon. It was quite an attractive quality. Nickle was already married once, she reminded herself, although she wasn't sure why her mind brought it up right then. "...I've been doing that ever since I got to this multiverse. I spend most of my time in Town, looking for cross gates." "Oh," the girl replied, feeling silly. She had assumed that he was new to the multiverse, but clearly he already had the lay of the land. That was good to know. "What about you? What are you planning on doing with your life now?" It was an interesting question, one that Yumi hadn't given a lot of thought to until now. But since Ganta had asked, she made a point of pondering it now. Just what exactly was she going to do, not just tomorrow, but in the foreseeable future? She thought she might like to see Nickle again. Their last meeting had left her intrigued - she wanted to spend more time with him and get to know him better. But before that, Yumi knew full well that there was something she had to do. The most important thing by far. She absolutely had to locate Jameson and make amends. Their friendship had been much too meaningful to just throw it away over something so silly as pride. Yes, she would have to take steps to find the detective and repair their estranged relationship as soon as she got back to Traverse Town. Now that she had made the decision, there was no sense in putting it off. "I have a few people I need to see back in Traverse Town," Yumi explained out loud. Something occurred to her, and she laughed a little. "The interesting part will be finding them once I get there though... that place can be like a maze!" |

"I have a few people I need to see back in Traverse Town," Ganta nodded, knowing that it was good to have friends when stuck in such a difficult situation like they were in. "The interesting part will be finding them once I get there though... that place can be like a maze!" Ganta chuckled a bit as well. It certainly is at that. Makes finding new gates a real bother." He smiled as he looked from her down to the fire, and absently reached into the flames, nonchalantly pulling out a small amount of the flames, rolling them over his hands and fingers like the flames themselves were alive. He looked back up at her a moment later, as if he had remembered something. "You know, I hadn't really thought about it, but I'm sure you must have been curious as to how I knew you were behind me when we first met." He let the flames in his hands coalesce back into a single flame which he placed back into the fire. "Since I am a fire mage, in addition to being able to use fire however like, I'm also able to sense changes in heat. When you came up behind me, you were much warmer than the area around you. Actually, it was like someone had just lit a large fire behind me." It had certainly proven to be a handy ability, allowing him to sense people sneaking up behind him, or helping him find people in the dark of night. "There's a lot of other things I can do, but I doubt you want to listen to me going on and on about something like that." He didn't want to come across as overly prideful, though in truth, he was quite proud of his skill with his own abilities, especially when he was still relatively young. He had always tried to avoid outright boasting, though he did tend to show off every now and then, sometimes by accident, and sometimes not so much. Edited by Tensa Zangetsu, Mar 11 2010, 07:26 PM.
