The pair of black boots rested, one over the other, atop the office desk, the left foot boot being on top and slowly moving back and forth. Work had been running smoothly, money had been coming in and the increasing number of people who came here to relax, free from the threats and dangers of Heartless. A set of fingerless gloves wrapped around the black mane of hair, cradling the man’s head as he rested peacefully.

With eyes closed, he reviewed his thoughts about what he had decided to do. While he had been gallivanting off, his employees had been working tirelessly to keep the arcade afloat and open. Nickle was forever grateful for that, even more so due to have promoted Sakarako to his new Assistant manager, since Ayane seemed to have vanished into the dark of the multiverse.

Still, with the increase in Traverse Town’s population, the place itself was slowly growing and as such, Nickle had been expanding the Abenobashi Arcade into the nearby stores to accommodate for the increase in customers. It was amazing at how much people would spend and how easily they could acquire munny.

Nickle’s eyelids slowly fluttered open, revealing his set of sapphire blue eyes, still free from sleep or tiredness. He had thought and mulled over this decision for some time and he had decided that it was time for him to hire some help.

The girls were getting run down, he was not here as often as he should be due to his insatiable need to destroy the heartless. There were too many factors working against such a small work force. That did not go to say that any of his employees didn’t have commitments if they were in an organisation such as Arcadia, the Wo-Shing or any other one out there. But that was the point of shift work. Sakarako, Aya and Chio would be here for most of the time, but even they deserved breaks.

Nickle slid his boots off his desk, his chair swivelling as he spun and stood up. He checked himself briefly. His green cargo pants were still clean, his white long sleeved shirt was still not creased and the preparations for the applications had been set.

The V-Pieces were still working, but it would only be himself and his current 3 employees who would use them anymore. Nickle had been working one something new, that would be much more functional and easy to manage for new employees than the complicated holographic interface that appeared in the eye-pieces visor.

Nickle opened the door, stepping out of his office and made his way towards the small waiting room he had built. It was a employee rec-room really, but for now it would serve as a holding area for those who wished to apply for work here. Nickle was sure they’d all get it, but he needed to just perform a test to see how they could really deal with their new employment. This wasn’t an ordinary arcade after all.

Chizu stepped into the arcade, her hands in her pockets. She wasn't in a particularly good mood that morning. She had woken up to find that she had slept on her arm in her sleep, and considering her arms were currently bandaged from that whole scene at the Tower, that hadn't been pleasant. Still, at least she was here.

Chizu was unaccustomed to not having a job of some sort. Ever since her sister died, she had pretty much been taking care of herself and while Hyakuji (and now Damon) had provided her with a roof over her head, having a job had always given her a certain sense of security. Of course, she wasn't sure exactly what working for Nickle would be like. This would be the first time she had actually been friends with whoever it was she was working for.

Her bandages were hidden by the jacket that she wore over her clothes and her hair had been let down. She had already spoken to Nickle about a job, but he had just told her to come here at this time like everyone else...which in Hyakuji very seldom meant anything good. Chizu walked over to Nickle.

"Hey," she said, folding her arms as she waited for the others to arrive.

Money was getting tight. VERY tight. To the point where it was nearly impossible to keep affording a place to stay. And food? Well, that too was an issue. Meglumar had been doing odd jobs for a while, but there was no way he could keep this up. Besides that, he was tired of selling blood whenever he could. Star was already getting on his case about THAT as well.

So, he wanted a job. And where better than the place with the Pac-Man? He rather enjoyed that game. He even managed to recently get the high score on one machine. He would have gotten more but half of the screen became possessed. It took every bit of restraint from him to NOT beat the machine down so he could kill the demon or heartless that he thought was inside it.

He walked into the waiting room, his sword to his side and his application in hand. He didn't go anywhere without his sword anymore. It was too dangerous to do so. If a heartless broke in here, what would he do? Spit on it? He saw Chizu there, as well as someone else. "Oh. Good day, Madam president." He said, half out of habit, half because it was funny. In Kara, the Chizu he knew was the most likely to become school president. This Chizu was sometimes aggravated by that, but per Star's suggestion, he just stopped trying to correct himself.

Now, let's play together...under the clearest of blue skies.
"Uh, uhm..." Erin meekly entered the room behind two other people who had apparently also seen the notice. She used to have a job before at the White Plum restaurant, but it kind of exploded, so yeah. That was her first job. Considering she's done this before, she probably shouldn't be as timid as she is about it, but she hasn't really been sure about anything since the whole world ending thing. She wasn't sure how different working at an Arcade and working at a Restaurant would be.

"Hi..." she piped up, "...You were, uh...looking for people?" She didn't really need the money all that much since she wasn't spoiled and knew how to get by on just a little. But she didn't like just sitting around thinking about heartless during her downtime. She liked the steady, consistent nature school used to have. Well, the classes themselves were pretty hectic, but at least they all happened at set times. Lately everything's just been going on without warning, and trying to live without any kind of consistency has been driving Erin crazy. She mainly just wants a job for the mental stability it offers rather than the paycheck.

Also, she wasn't in Neo Arcadia's extermination division, just investigation. She never really got any missions, and the ones she did get were low priority. She's appeared at a few major battles, but usually not accomplishing much. It's unlikely that she would ever be called away from work for urgent Neo Arcadia business, so she figured taking a job was safe. It would be nice to have something to do that wasn't life-threatening.

Nickle opened the door to the room where Erin, Chizu and Meglumar were waiting. "Hello there everyone." said Nickle with a cheery grin, gla to see that he had some very good potential employees. Well in all honesty, he couldn't afford to be that picky right now, but regardless. Nickle took each of their applications, glad to see that they had been filled out. He took a moment to brush over them to get their names right.

He then placed them under his arm and grinned, "Alright kids, although I’m sure you’ve each come to an arcade at least once, and hopefully come the Abenobashi more than once, let my just give you a quick tour of the basic machines.” Nickle stepped outside the little rec-room and out onto the floor of the arcade.

Posted Image

He began leading Chizu, Megulamar and Erin around the arcade’s various sections, showing them the traditional games. “It’s pretty basic to deal with these games, just a routine cleaning of the instruments and mechanisms inside should keep the parts lasting for a long time. If there are any replacements that need to be done, Sakarako and I can take care of that.”

Posted Image

Of course, once they get into the swing of things, then Nickle could teach each one of them how to replace and tinker with the parts. Aya and Chio were already more or less adept with it, but Sakarako was just really handy with a screwdriver and some pliers.

Posted Image

Nickle then started leading them further back into the arcade, to the one side that was close to another small office, an operating room of sorts where Sakarako currently was. “But this, is what a lot of people are coming for.” Nickle said indicating to the machines just past the small control room.

Posted Image

There was the shadow of a body in the one virtual reality pod and Nickle knew that Aya was doing in game maintenance. “These are my Virtual Reality Pods. I was once being sponsored by a company called Engage Inc. but since the world kinda got eaten by Heartless, I’ve lost all contact with them. So I had to develop my own running and operating system for the pods.”

Nickle turned to look at the three little employees, “You’re looking at my one handiwork. Having started with only 10, I’ve increased the pods’ numbers to 40. Everything is intergrated to the servers, so you can see who is doing what.” Nickle said walking to the door and opening it and startling Sakarako a bit, “Oh, Ryuko-sama, it’s you. Everything’s ok, Aya should be exiting the pod soon.” Nickle nodded, “Thanks Sakarako. Take a break after this, you need some rest.” The girly blushed slightly and nodded, “Hai.” Nickle closed the door and lead the three to the pods, watching as the shell lifted up and Aya slowly opened her eyes. “Ah! Ryuko-sama! How long have you been standing there!” she said bashfully covering her completely clothed chest. Nickle rolled his eyes, “Sigh, long enough apparently. Is everything working inside the VR Systems then?”

Aya recovered a bit, pouting, but nodded. “Yes. Graphics are fine, realistic as always, the interface is working and the neurotransmitter problem isn’t appearing anymore.” Nickle sighed a relief. That was good news. The neurotransmitter basically put someone in the game world, a mini head-covering that was gently clamped onto a player’s head. The problem was that in turn it could often result in hair loss or headaches. But with a few tweaks, both had been resolved.

“Ok, Aya, go get some water, then take over the main counter. Have Chio come to man the operating room while Sakarako takes a break.” The girl nodded, moving out of the pod and adjusting her V-Piece. When she was gone, Nickle turned to the three. “And now, we can get down to business. One of the main problems with the arcade is these VR pods. The reason being is that in effect, the VR World is another world, pretty much like EXE. So although they can’t get out here,” At least not yet… “There are Heartless that are randomly appearing inside and acting as Viruses.”

Nickle then snapped his fingers and although they wouldn’t know it from looking at him, he had used his powers to activate a little hologram projector that showed a life size projection of two 3D models.
“These are your uniforms.” Said Nickle with a grin.

Posted Image

“Basically, these have all the tools you need for basic arcade maintenance, a headset so you guys can chat no matter where you are in the arcade, or even outside, as well as an electronic interface with all the machines, VR Pod or basic. They can eject players from the VR Pods or shut down machines, should something happen or if the players are tampering with the equipment.”

Nickle looked them over smiling, “And now, comes the practical part of the application.” Snapping his fingers again, a shelf raised itself up from the floor and the hologram dissappeared, showing a whole wrack full of uniforms. “Find your size and style, put it on and we can get down to business. Girls can wear pants, guys can wear stockings, I’m not one to judge. Just be aware that your appearance could have an impact on our clients.” Nickle gave the three of them a sly wink. What he was meaning by it was unknown, but the feeling they might get from it would be significant enough. “You can change in the bathrooms.”

She watched as Meglumar and Erin entered the room. She knew both of them from Arcadia, which was good. Neither of them seemed like bad company, so at least she wouldn't have to go through not being able to stand her own co-workers. She was sure that no matter what, it wasn't going to be as bad as the time she found herself working for Touya though. A death threat on her first day hadn't been her idea of a dream job. But she had really needed the money.

Chizu followed Nickle around the arcade, her arms folded. She had already seen most of this before, but she wasn't about to tell him that. She glanced around as he showed them the games. She had worked in a lot of different places before, but never an arcade. This was going to be a first for her. Hopefully she wouldn't have to wear an embarrassing uniform or something like that.

...Spoke too soon.

Chizu's eyes widened as Nickle showed them exactly what their uniform was going to be. "Where's the rest of it?" she asked Nickle, raising an eyebrow. She didn't even need to ask who had designed it. It was pretty obvious who had designed this, and what intent they had. She clenched her fists at her side and reminded herself that she needed this job. At least Nickle gave her the option of wearing pants. At least. As she gathered up her uniform, though, she punched him lightly in the arm.

Chizu came out of the bathroom a few minutes later, glaring at Nickle. A blush spread over her face as she closed the door behind her and tried to nonchalantly lean against the wall. She was dressed in the top of the girl uniform, but rather than go the whole way and wear pants, she had worn black shorts underneath the skirt so that it wasn't revealing too much, and so that she could fight in it if she had to. It was still awkward though.

Meglumar followed along the tour paying attention as he did so. Basic machinery, nothing more complex than he had seen before, save for the freakish pods of madness. Quite frankly they disturbed him on every level imaginable. A virtual world? No way was he touching these things. he had enough trouble with worlds. If he used this he might be stuck there forever or something.

He glanced at the uniforms. "....Why are these fake people wearing clothing two sizes too small? He asked, before looking into the bin for clothing his size. Well this was going to be an odd look on him. He entered the bathroom and changed, keeping his sword on this new outfits belt as he did so. Again, he did not like being without it.

He emerged from the bathroom fully changed, noting one benefit to this outfit. "At least there are no sleeves."p/color] He said, grateful for that. On his world, sleeves did not exist. Then again, there were two suns, no winter, and incredible heat.

Oh crap. Oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap.

Flashback

Nickle had been searching under, around and inbetween the gummi ships with now luck. He scratched his head. His keyblade was humming in his hands, so there definately was something there. However, that's when he heard it. Voices? Nickle took off in the direction he had heard them coming from. No sooner had he moved, he heard a whump. He'd heard it before. Lavender and Chizu often made a noise like that.

Someone was using aeromancy, possibly in a cannon form attack. Nickle was already close and as he rounded the corner, he spotted it. An Air Soldier holding something and just passing him, however at that same time, he turned to see practically a wall of air being used offensivly, coming straight towards him.

Nickle didn't have enough to react, so simply released his keyblade in a shower of light and covered his face with his arms and he was buffetted and flying onto his ass. "Argh, hey! Watch it! What kind of aeromancer are you?" Nickle's reaction was a little harsh, but he normally wouldn't have reacted in such a way. Truth be told, he had gotten into her way...

Even as Nickle showed her around the arcade, there was only one thing on her mind. It's...it's that guy I hit by accident! Erin thought, panicked, I totally forgot about that! Why didn't I remember it before I saw him? He even told me back then he ran this place...Who the heck else was I expecting? Jeez! I need to pay more attention! She looked at him, trying to examine his face. Does he remember me? Oh I hope he doesn't remember me! I don't want my employer to remember the time I accidentally hit him as our first meeting!

By the time she saw the virtual reality pods, though, she was amazed enough to be distracted from her panic. She had heard of the EXE world but had never actually been there. She had only heard rumors of things like this existing. She had always imagined what playing a game in something like this would be.

The uniforms, though, were another story. The top to the female one looked relatively fine, but the bottom kind of put her off a bit. It reminded her of Priestesses in Ragnarok Online, who were not very good at their job given their wardrobe. She had seen worse, but the thought of wearing that kind of thing made her uncomfortable, especially when her body wasn't all that sexy to begin with. She was more of the girl next door type. It would look weird if not anything else. I'd really rather not have to wear something like that...

So she was understandably glad that she had some leeway with her uniform. She took her time going through it. The sleeveless tops were kind of cool, but Erin was a bit partial to having her navel showing. She ended up going into the bathroom with a sleeveless top like in the example, but one that stayed straight all the way down instead of flaring up near the waist. The bottom was replaced with a black knee-length skirt. She also opted for shoes instead of boots and ditched the knee-socks.

Erin slowly came out of the bathroom wearing her new uniform. She saw Chizu there, wearing her uniform with shorts beneath her skirt. Erin remembered seeing her around in Neo Arcadia. She was an aeromancer, just like her. She's a lot better than I am, though... Another person was there too, who she didn't recognize immediately. She remembered that he was also in Neo Arcadia but didn't really know anything else about him. "I've never done anything with machines before...The only job I've had before this one was at a restaurant." she said, a bit intimidated by the high tech stuff. She had been in here before to play normal arcade games, but she had no idea that there was stuff like virtual reality pods in here. That kind of stuff isn't what you want to mess with as a rookie. She figured if anything went horribly wrong she could just call someone more qualified. But would she really get paid just to do that?

Nickle put his hands on his hips and frowned a bit as his interviewees commented, pretty much on the uniforms downside. "Alright enough griping, off you go my little caterpillars." Nickle ignored the fact that Chizu had just assaulted her new boss, smiling as she did so. Nickle waited for them all to get changed and couldn't help smiling when they came out.

"Regardless of what you guys may think, you're already getting some admirers." Nickle indicated with his thumb over his shoulder as several boys and girls dispersed into the arcade's depths, their faces red with embarressment for having been caught peeping.

Nickle then turned to Erin, wanting to address her fears of not having worked with machines. He remembered her from that time in the hanger and how she'd nailed him with that one air blast. However, he was hardly one to hold it against her, he'd gotten caught by several of those over the years and it was just something you learned to roll with. "Erin, don't worry about it, it's fairly easy to pick up, if you look at the screen on your arm there, there's actually a little screen that you can refer to about maintinance. Those uniforms prevent minor shocks as well. Making it easier for you guys to work here."

Nickle then smiled, looking at Aya who was now manning the control center nearby. She grinned and opened up 3 of the pods. Nickle looked back to them, "Now then, time for you guys to show me what you're made of. I'm sure you're all talented, but now's the time to show me first hand. Pick a pod and get ready. Here, virus and heartless extermination is taken to a whole other level and are a job requirement. So let's do this lickety-split."

Nickle clapped his hands and a third pod opened up. He took his V-Piece and placed it on his ear, the red lense covering his left eye. He lay down in the fourth pod, waiting for the others to do the same.

Erin gasped. "We're actually...right now!?" She was less than confident in her fighting abilities. Well, it's just virtual reality right...? Even if I lose in the game, nothing should happen in real life...this isn't a tv show, after all. She cautiously stepped into one of the pods, still a bit hesitant. I've got Chizu and Whatshisface with me too, so I should be fine...right? She closed her eyes. I don't know if the keyblade will work in there...Well, the Heartless work in there so you'd think it would, but still...

...Oh no

Meglumar paid no mind to the people looking at him or the girls. No, he couldn't care less about that. Even if he was in his normal state of mind, he was not appreciative or caring of such things. But now he was not in his normal state of mind. No, he felt something. Fear.

"Ah...ha." He said, looking at the pods. "...If something goes wrong and these machines explode or I get stuck inside.....it was not my fault." He said staring at the pods and gulping. Okay. Nothing bad would happen. He had to have faith in that. I mean, how often could reality mess up his life?

He slowly stepped in to the pod, his hand lightly grasping the hilt for a moment. He just was really on edge at this point. He took a few deep breaths. Please let this go smoothly.

Chizu resisted the urge to raise her right hand and flash a very rude gesture at the guys that had been spying on them, reminding herself over and over again why she needed this job. She glared at them though, and had the satisfaction of seeing some of them slink back or look away from her. Sometimes, it was nice to have eyes that were such an ominous color. She looked up at Nickle as he mentioned the VR pods and the test.

Seriously, what was it with the brothers and their need to constantly test people? And on the same note, what was it with her and not being able to back down from a challenge. Unlike the other two, she didn't feel nervous at all. A small grin came onto her face as she relaxed, most of the tension leaving her shoulders as she walked towards the pods. Erin was nervous, so she placed a hand on the girl's back as she walked forward. "Hey, don't worry," she said. "You'll do fine."

She stepped into a pod and leaned back, keeping her arms at her side as she waited. Now that she was inside, she took a deep breath. She had always been a little claustrophobic. Not badly enough to feel nervous about going into an elevator, but badly enough to have a freak out if she were, say, stuck in one. It came with the territory, she supposed. She was used to wide open spaces.

Focus.

She would show Nickle exactly how much she had improved in two years. He had seen a bit of it when she and Ryme had helped him out before. He would see the rest of it today.

Nickle smiled, glad to see each of them getting into the pods, even if it was a bit begrudginly. Sure it was fear of the unknown but he didn't understand why they were all so uptight about it. He'd never seen anything larger than an air soldier appear inside the pods, it wasn't that hard of a job. That and he needed to at least guage their abilities. That was the point of testing things, to see how compatible they were under various conditions and stresses.

He knew Chizu's well enough, but Meglumar and Erin still needed further observation. He couldn't just make them do it, otherwise it might cause discomfort amongst the three as they worked together later on. "OK guys, I'm closing the pods. Just try to relax. I'll explain the mechanics of the system inside." The last thing either of them would see was a blue and white spark in Nickle's eyes as he triggered the pods to close. He smiled to reassure them before he vanished under the opaque glass.

Inside of the pods, Meglumar, Erin and Chizu would find themselves being supplied with oxygen, while a series of sensor bands lowered themselves down onto their forehead, torso, legs and arms. Then suddenly they'd feel their bodies drifting off and their eyelids becoming heavy. They could struggle against it, however it would win out in the end and they'd find their eyes closed and their mind drifting off into the depths of a dream.

That was when, they'd feel as if they'd been dropped into a lake that was 30 degrees below zero. Their bodies would be surrounded by light and spectrums, forming a tunnel around them, before causing them to materialized into a small sphere of a single colour, the colour being one that reflected themselves. In Nickle's case, it was blue. Although neither of them could see each other, they could still hear each other.

"Alright guys. This is just the loading sphere, so don't be afraid. Basically here, you can alter things about your virtual self. Change your hair, eyes and clothes. Though you can't change your gender, just FYI, can't have stuff like that in my arcade." Nickle chuckled, knowing that he'd lost customers in the past because of that, but this was a place where really young kids played as well. It was for that same reason, that power inhibitors were installed in all the VR Pods. he'd lost so many of them due to Hyakujians powers going beserk inside the pods.

Several holographic screens appeared in the sphere, showing the clothes and body alterations Nickle mentioned. As the owner of the arcade dressed himself, he just mentioned lost in thought, "Don't worry that you're naked right now, no one can see you."

And even if they could, there were long segments of fractal code covering the sensitive areas in the form of wide, orbital code-bands.

Erin smiled to Chizu, silently thanking her for the words of encouragement. She felt a bit better about the whole thing now. She laid in her pod with a smile as she drifted off into a peaceful sleep.

Inside of a green sphere, Erin blushed furiously, quickly covering her chest with her arms before being told that no one could see her. She relaxed a bit after that, but was still a bit apprehensive. Even though it seemed completely unnecessary to her, she probably should have expected this kind of thing. The sensation of extreme cold, at the very least, had been very unpleasant. But she didn't know near enough about computers to try and figure out why that was necessary for the VR program to work, so she just bared with it. Thankfully it didn't persist into the loading sphere.

Erin didn't really have any plans of changing herself at all. She was fine with the way she was. Still, though, she couldn't figure out why Nickle would lose customers from having gender changes available in the VR. As long as people weren't using it for this and that, it didn't seem like much of a problem to her. It didn't affect her though, so she decided not to worry about it too much.

She stayed inside the green sphere for a while, watching the segments of code fly around it. She didn't need to stay in very long, since the only thing she really had to do to get out was recreate the Abenobashi uniform. She figured if she just relaxed a bit before exiting, she'd arrive at the same time as the others would if they spent time making changes. This whole VR thing was pretty alien to her and she wanted to take it slow.

I guess the heartless can't get into the loading spheres... She thought out loud, It would be pretty troublesome if they could. People would probably end up entering the VR with totally random appearance configurations, if the heartless act like viruses. Or worse, none at all... She imagined landing in front of Nickle and the others totally naked and started nervously looking outside of the sphere just to make sure there wasn't an air soldier flying around.

Partly out of nervousness from her imagined scenario, she quickly remade her clothes from the real world. She didn't know whether this avatar would stick with her or if she'd be able to change it later, but she figured since she was happy with her body in real life it was the safest bet either way. She would hate to try something and have it turn out bad and then not be able to change back. When he said we could hear each other, did he mean just things we say out loud, or our thoughts too...? Deciding to play it safe, Erin said out loud, "Alright, I'm ready."

Meglumar was naked. This was an inconvenience. He was also surrounded in a golden bubble of some sort that obscured him from outside viewing. This was a good thing. Nickle explained the parameters, and how that he could change how he looked and the like. Meglumar, though, was a bit less.....creative than others might be.

"My appearance is within acceptable parameters. I will just be appreciate of having clothing." He said, setting his clothing back to what he was wearing beforehand. He then thought for a moment. No. He supposed that would not do. Instead, he had a better idea. He would recreate some of his old clothing from home.

He started out with a red sleeveless shirt. Nothing too heavy. Nothing too light. Something that would be easy to 'wear.' On top of that he added on a simple pair of blue pants, and a black belt. Some basic shoes, a brown hue. And there he was. This was acceptable. "I am now prepared and properly clothed." He said, looking around the sphere while he could.
