First, its Variable Phase Shift Armor is much more efficient than the first-generation Phase Shift, allowing it not only the ability to alter mere color at will, but also the ability to provide a general level of integrity over the whole suit as well as focusing energy on specific impact locations. Secondly, while it is still powered by advanced batteries rather than a reactor, it holds an ability to receive energy via deuterion beam transmission. So while mobile suits like the Strike Gundam would have to return to a mothership and plug in to recharge, the Impulse can be recharged on-the-fly if necessary. Third, it is the first Gundam in its line to feature a Core Block System, in which a fighter craft (known as a "Core Splendor") docks with an upper and lower section ("Chest Flyer" and "Leg Flyer," respectively) to form the actual Gundam. The benefit is that if part of the Gundam is damaged, it can be ejected and replaced without returning to base. Its fourth "ability" is likely its least original, as it was taken directly from the Strike Gundam. Like the Strike, it can be equipped with various "mission modules" to give it different armaments. What sets Impulse's version apart, however, is that it needs not return to its ship to change packs. Instead, the packs can be launched via a small flying craft and equipped on-the-fly. Technical and Historical Notes: The Impulse Gundam was ZAFT's answer to the Earth Alliance's Strike Gundam, short and simple. It was everything the Strike was, only better. If the Strike had one sword, it had two. If the Strike had one particle cannon, it had two. If the Strike had pack swapping, the Impulse could do it in midair. If the Strike had batteries, the Impulse could recharge on-the-fly. Literally every aspect of the Impulse was blatantly torn from the pages of the Strike's technical manuals, albeit with significant improvements in terms of mission radius. While the Strike would have to be returned to a base or mothership for any repairs, recharging or part-swapping, the Impulse could do all three while it was on the field. Its modular Core Block System allowed it to eject damaged parts of the mobile suit and replace them through re-docking (assuming replacements were available). Its deuterion beam receiver allowed it to be recharged remotely. Finally, all of its Silhouette Packs had the same docking system as the Core Block, so they too could be changed while the Gundam was still operational and in combat. While merely making those changes would have made the Impulse a worthy adversary to anything the Earth Alliance had, ZAFT's engineers were not content with stopping there. They also significantly improved the design of the Silhouette Packs, so that for one, they only took up space on the mobile suit's back. While this might seem trivial, the Strike had a problem whereby its shield would need to be ejected to use certain additional equipment. With the Silhouettes only taking up mount space in the rear, the Impulse's shield can remain equipped at all times, giving it a defensive advantage. While the Force Silhouette is mostly unchanged when compared to the Aile Striker, the Sword and Blast Silhouettes carry with them modest upgrades. The Sword Silhouette doubles the Sword Strike's weapon count, giving it two Excalibur beam swords that can also be combined into one massive cutting weapon as well as two beam boomerangs. However, the Impulse's designers did forego the Sword Striker's grappling hook as 'unnecessary'. The Blast Silhouette, meanwhile, not only doubles the plasma cannon and missile pod counts, but also replaces the Launcher Striker's measly vulcan cannon with a pair of railguns. As if that weren't enough, it also stores an extendible beam javelin, correcting the obvious flaw the Launcher Striker had in lacking any sort of melee weaponry. Considering how closely it resembled the Strike and yet exceeded it in every way... that was likely why Ayane Isuzu ended up becoming its pilot upon entering the World of Legacy. It was the power she needed... to finish what she'd started. |
