Magic was a complex force. A world of the unimaginable. It had immense power, and could be used for great salvation, as well as great destruction. Those who wielded the powers of a magician could do anything, if they worked hard enough. ....So why in the name of Poseidon's left shoe DID THEY HAVE TO MAKE IT SO UNGODLY HARD TO UNDERSTAND?!? Meglumar slammed shut another book and moved it to his left, where a pile was starting to grow. Mana this, Magic Power that, Will here, Mind there, how many different sources did magic have?! Why could they not just simplify things, use one type of resource or something like that? He grabbed another new book and began to read it as well. He needed to find a magic that he could understand and use. A magic with which to fight the heartless. He had his own magic, but it was weak. Very weak. And it required him to keep water on him. His mother, meanwhile, could do all her magics without so much as a drop of water. She could make it storm is she so wished! Stupd half blooded nature. If he was full blooded, he could do so much more. This was another book on Magic Power. Again, what was Magic Power? He didn't understand, they never explained it. It seemed to be a beginners book, but it completely skipped any source of information for those who knew nothing on this blasted Magic Power! |

'So this is the mysterious Arcane Sanctum? A huge, huge tower? Impressive, I guess, but I wonder if they have anything on espers or psychic powers. The only thing to do is go look, I guess...and then find some answers...I have to get back home!' Cassandra Evers thought to herself as she stepped inside the building, carrying nothing besides a thick bottle of water in one hand. The rest of her belongings were in a shirt pocket, covered by the beige vest she wore. It wasn't much...just some memories and some money, but it was all she needed for her quest. The rest...the rest she'd get from inside of herself. She had began her life in this world several days ago, waking up in some abandoned alleyway after that hazardous teleportation. Nothing remained besides the things she had in her wallet and that wasn't much at all. Still...it was enough to buy herself some food for the past couple of days (amazing that this place accepted yen, considering all of the strange people and things that inhabited it) as well as garner herself some information. First things were first. She needed a plan. The first step was to heighten her powers through intense study. Which is why she found herself here. She had asked where people might go to enhance their supernatural powers and the Arcane Sanctum seemed like the place to be. There had to be hundreds of people here, each of them studying thick tomes or simply talking with one another. Ignoring them, she searched the shelves for anything on esper powers or water manipulation. It took her time (what didn't), but when she found a sizeable amount of books, she found a quiet place next to this blond-haired kid with slightly pointed ears. Placing them to the side and sitting down, she opened her water bottle, slightly thirsty. Placing a finger on the outside of the bottle, she traced the finger upwards before the water followed the digit in a lazy spiral into her mouth. Her thirst quenched, she capped the bottle and began to read. |

As he continued his constant reading, someone took a seat nearby him. An orange-ish color hair, carrying a bottle of water. She too took a seat, and- ... Meglumar visibly twitched as he saw the display on magic. Water magics, likely enough. And this girl looked to be HUMAN to boot. A HUMAN. His mother's people were masters of the craft. And this human girl was manipulating it in a way he could not. It took quite a bit of restraint to not yell in frustration. How could he fail THIS badly at this?! He stared down at the book again. Ugh. This was really starting to become difficult for the simple fact that he had no idea what this source of magic was. All these books assumed the learner knew about mana, or magic power, or whatever one called it. And he had no idea what it was. He looked over to the girl, and decided to ask her. She showed powers in magic HE did not have, after all. "Excuse me. Might I ask 2 questions? Do you know anything on the arts of magic? And if so, WHAT is this 'Magic Power' Or 'Mana' these books speak of?" |

'Tch...magic? I heard rumors that it existed but...' Cassandra thought to herself as she read one of the books. A treatise on the inner workings of magical energies or something. She had hoped magical energies was referring to the esper powers, but instead it talked about stuff like mana and runes and things she didn't even know about beyond simple theory that her teachers covered. She was interrupted in her reading by a question and she looked up, seeing the boy from before. "Excuse me. Might I ask 2 questions? Do you know anything on the arts of magic? And if so, WHAT is this 'Magic Power' Or 'Mana' these books speak of?" She frowned, not liking the interruption one bit. "I suppose you can ask. But I don't know anything about magic or this...mana thing beyond something that mages use to fight. This stuff was considered nothing more than rumors from where I come from." She shrugged, returning to her reading now that she answered his questions. She skimmed through several more of the pages, mumbling to herself, "This whole tower of books and yet barely anything on espers...I must be looking at the wrong place." Arg, blast, she wasn't even a magician and she had better skills than he. That was depressing. His head hung low for a moment before he heard a word. 'Esper.' Where had he heard that before...OH! O course! Miss Lavender, the commander of Arcadia! She claimed to be one! She was what Star called an Aeromancer, so then maybe this girl was an Aquamancer! THAT would explain it. "Esper....Actually I have heard those words before from my commanding officer. Do you know of a 'Lavender Smith?' She knows some things on Espers, she's the one in charge of Arcadia. One of the two main forces against the heartless. Perhaps she could assist you." The young half human said, trying to be of some assistance. |

'Commanding officer? This person is in the military or something? Hmph, doesn't really seem like much...still, it takes all types but...the military kind of sucked back home. I wonder if the one here is any better.' Cassandra thought to herself with a measure of disdain. Well, at least he was trying to help her. That was better than nothing, right? She shook her head. "This is the first place I've been to ever since I appeared in this...dimension. I've never even heard of this Lavender Smith, Arcadia, or the heartless. I'll...keep them in mind, though, but I'm..." She paused, wondering if this person could help her more. She had no idea where...anything was in this stupid place and having a good guide was always helpful. "I actually have no idea where they are." She said with a shrug, offering him a half-smile. "You seem like you have more knowledge of this world than I do, so...could you tell me where this Arcadia thing? They sound interesting...strong as well, especially if they have people who know about espers." "Oh, I should probably introduce myself. Cassandra Evers." She gave him a small nod, not bothering to offer her hand. "Oh...sorry if I can't really help you with your problem, but maybe together we can find another book on this mana you're talking about?" |

Ah, another newcomer, eh? "I see. My name is Meglumar Odai. Are you a survivor from a lost world?" He asked, with a frown. Florencia's loss weighed heavily on his heart even still. He really preferred not to think on it, though, so he forced himself to change thoughts. "Arcadia is a local defensive group whom has taken up arms against the heartless. All who fight heartless are allowed to join, typically. Basically they are assigned to various things to solve issues and work towards eliminating the threat." "It is set up within the guild hall in First District. You can not miss it." He said, actually pointing out a window and out to it's roof. Even though it was quite a ways off it was still visible. "In general, that is the best place to learn of information. Now, as for the heartless...they are monsters that eat hearts to make more heartless. They seek to destroy all life." He said, summarizing those demons. "As for the offer...I am appreciative. I need to devise new ways to fight against the heartless. They are strong, VERY strong. I need any weapon and edge I can obtain." He said, grateful for the offered assistance. |

"Survivor of a lost world? I don't know how powerful you think these Heartless are, but they aren't going to be able to destroy Academy City no matter how hard they try. A well-placed shot from...even a Level 2 Esper probably is enough to destroy one of those things. I'm a Level 3, of course." Cassandra said haughtily, folding her arms. "As for how I got here..." She faltered, not particularly wanting to talk about the failure that had brought her here in the first place. So she didn't, instead opting to shake her head. "That's personal business. What matters is that I'm here now and I want to get out." "This Arcadia sounds interesting, though. They fight against the Heartless? That must mean they're at least...somewhat strong. Probably have quite a few facilities dedicated to improving personal power..." She fell silent, thinking about possibly joining Arcadia. She personally didn't care about the Heartless. They weren't in Academy City and it wasn't her problem in the first place. But the chance to increase her own abilities? Now that would be valuable. She nodded at Meglumar, getting to her feet. "Well then, I guess I should do what I can to help. Come on, let's find a beginner's book about magic or something. I'm sure there's a book out there that'll have the answers you need." |

Meglumar's eyes got serious look for a moment when this girl thought these heartless were not that strong. "Do not assume that all heartless are as weak as Shadows. I have recently witnessed them destroy an entire world, and everyone native to it." He said, before looking back at his stack of books. "As for books....I have most of the beginners magic books right here. He said placing his hand on the large stack. "At least, I assume these are the starting books. The library uses a system of organization I have never seen before." |

"If you say so...I guess I'll have to see them for myself then." Cassandra murmured, wondering if they really were as powerful as Meglumar seemed to think. A small flicker of worry wormed its way into her heart. If they somehow got into Academy City...her friends were all unconscious. They wouldn't be able to defend themselves, although there was always the other espers...no, they were her friends. She should be the one to save them. All the more reason to find a way out of this place. "I'm not too familiar with this system either...but let's see if any of those books you have will help. Have you already read through them all?" |

Meglumar shook his head. "I have not. I have only read half of them at this point in time. While they go in depth and explain the spell creations, effects, and types, but none so far have explained the power source of it all."[color] He frowned, looking down at the books before him. He was able to learn HOW to use some spells, technically. There was one he looked at in particular, a spherical barrier which would reflect attacks back. But these stupid books. They were written as if the knowledge of Mana came beforehand! He was quite frustrated with this. "The theorycraft is all here. If I knew the energy source, I could practice it. I've already read on how to preform the spells perfectly, and doublechecked it. But not once have I seen ANYWHERE so far, what the power source is. Be it Mana, or Magic Power, or anything. |

"Well then, the only thing left to do would be to search the rest of the books, correct? There are still quite a few tomes of knowledge left so...we might as well start." Cassandra said lightly as she grabbed one of the books off the pile. She wasn't sure if he had read it or not, but frankly the doing was much more important than the wondering. Best to strike first instead of dilly-dallying. She flipped through the introduction, sighing slightly as she read paragraph after paragraph on the workings of magic. If only she could bring back a book or two to Academy City...imagine the uproar that would happen if she were to do so! It would be life-changing, at least...or at least make her fellow espers more aware about this...this magic. How unscientific...is this what people would call a miracle? She sighed and tossed the book aside. Much like the others, it presumed that the reader already had some prior knowledge about mana and magic in general. She carelessly reached for another book. "I hope this one has something on it...there has to be something in here that's useful..." |

"Perhaps. perhaps not. This is the issue with some things in Traverse town. Because it is built from the remains of other worlds, there is no guarantee that there will be anything useful for anyone else." He said, absentmindedly checking the index for mana. For once, there was an actual entry and a page to check. "Hmm.....here might be something." He muttered. "Mana is the magical force that binds everything together. everyone has mana, but in varying amounts. Some may have an immense 'pool,' while others may have barely enough." .......So.....what? "....Oh forget it." He said, his face falling into the book. This was not worth the effort. |

Cassandra laughed when she heard the mundane and boring explanation of mana from Meglumar's lips. He sounded so irritated about the utter...worthlessness about his find that it was rather amusing. Not that she would say she was laughing at him. Laughing at his misfortune...that would be a much more accurate statement. She placed her own book aside and smiled at him, her lips twisted slightly as she gave a shrug. "Well, looks like we're going to hit dead end after dead end. Why not just cut out the middleman and go straight to the source? Let's find one of those really good magic users and see if he or she will be willing to give you a crash course in the basics or something." She offered. "Unless you've already did that. I mean, that seems like it would be one of the logical routes, considering all of the strange people that inhabit this world." "Myself being one of them, I suppose..." She scratched her chin, looking thoughtful. "Hmm...there isn't anything in these books about espers either...my next step would be to ask that woman of yours for information. Are you going to keep looking around these piles of books? There has to be a better way out there." |

Meglumar stood up from his chair. "I am going to go out and look for someone who knows what they are doing. It is obvious that repeating my search with each book will be a waste of my time." He said, closing the book he was reading and placing that on the 'finished' stack. "I hope that your quest goes well. Good luck with meeting with Lavender." He said, taking his leave. |
