"If any of those avatars was named ShootingStar727, we've met," Star replied with a grin as she pulled down the sunglasses to look at Jen over the rim, or since they were star-shaped, the points. Jen couldn't help but giggle at the sunglasses - funny eyewear designs always had that kind of effect on her. "Ah, my account was Jennifer_Chase94, but I don't think I've ever run into a user by that profile," Jen replied, rubbing her chin thoughtfully. Then again, she'd barely stayed in that community for more than a month before getting tired of it and ever since she decided to network on Facebook the purple-haired girl hadn't given Gaia a second glance. She wondered if Star had a Facebook profile too, but despite coming from Earth, Star might not even be from the same Earth Jen was from, although with all regards their Earths appeared to be almost identical. "Nah, but you know what, I think I'll take the scarf." Star added as she tugged the scarf loose. "It's a pretty scarf alright," Jen commented, nodding as she slung the shopping bag with her coat over her left shoulder and leaned back, tucking her right hand into the pocket of her jeans. "It'd be a cute match for a fuzzy winter coat and earmuffs." "On second thought, I'll take the hat," After a few moments of hesitation Star took off the scarf, deciding to buy the hat instead. "That seems kinda...unsafe for these times." "That has always been my opinion on ties," Jen replied, bringing immediately to mind a certain Jackie Chan movie, as well as the first episode of Noir. "But it's kind of a double-edged sword really - if you know how to use it you've got a pretty nifty killing weapon that's also well... stylish to wear!" Jen flashed Star a wink as she gave a thumbs up. "But anyhow, you interested in looking for more clothes? Or are you thinking of looking elsewhere now?" Jen asked as she tilted her head slightly. |

Star laughed a bit at Jen's words, although it was a nervous laugh. She held the scarf in her hands for a moment, twisting it around her palm. "I really don't think I'm ever gonna get close enough to someone to use it like that," she said, "Besides, I can make my own. I'm more of a "use my powers from a distance" kinda fighter." If she could even be considered a fighter at all. She had never really thought about using Vega as a strangulation device instead of a restraining technique, though. It would have to be something she'd look into. She'd never use it on another human being, of course, but she needed the edge on the Heartless. "Yeah, let's go." said Star, heading over to the checkout. "I've only got a little bit of money left, and I don't really wanna spend it all in one place." She grinned at Jen as she moved aside to let the other girl pay for her coat first. "You go ahead." Star looked at the hat in her hand and thought about how her criteria for selecting clothes had changed lately. She still cared about how she looked. She didn't think that was ever going to change. But--she tapped one flat heel on the ground as she waited for her turn--she hadn't worn high heels in months. She hadn't even bought a pair since arriving here from Kara. The ones she had with her in Florencia had been thrown away by now. They had been useless by the time she arrived in Traverse Town. She had been tying her hair more often than she let it down and had strayed away from anything that could be used to choke or otherwise injure her. Even her accessories were limited, and she definitely wasn't wearing any of those big hoop earrings. Her outfit had been designed so that she wouldn't be even more disadvantaged than she normally was if she had to fight in it, which was something she never had to consider before. And she wondered what was scarier, the fact that she had to do that or the fact that lately, she had been doing it without thinking. She shook her head of the thoughts and smiled at Jen as she stepped forward to pay for her things. "You pick the next place," she told the other girl. |

"I really don't think I'm ever gonna get close enough to someone to use it like that," Star replied, laughing at Jen's statement albeit nervously as she held the scarf in her hands for a moment, twisting it around her palm. "Besides, I can make my own. I'm more of a "use my powers from a distance" kinda fighter." Jen raised her eyebrows, obviously interested in knowing what Star can do. She'd seen how the other girl could manipulate light back during the Traverse Town karaoke night - but surely she could do more than just create fancy light shows, isn't it? Photomancy, if done right, one could fire off lasers! At least, based on Jen's logic that was how it should work. "Yeah, let's go." Star said as she joined Jen at the checkout. "I've only got a little bit of money left, and I don't really wanna spend it all in one place." The blond photomancer grinned as she moved aside for Jen to make her payment. "You got it Star," came Jen's equally enthusiastic chorus as she made the transaction in Munny - perhaps this whole dimension-hopping thing wasn't so bad after all; for one, she's found work and found it more rewarding than school, which was quite honestly a waste of time for her. Jen waited for Star to finish her transaction before the blond photomancer addressed her once again. "You pick the next place," Star said to Jen. "Hmm... what logically follows after shopping," Jen said to no one in particular, resting her chin thoughtfully against her left hand, her brows furrowed in thought. "Dining!" Jen snapped her fingers, making a clicking sound. It's been a while since she did that - the last time she recalled going on a shopping/dining spree was with her family during her holiday trip to Hong Kong some two years ago. Of course, back then her parents paid for everything, but now she's spending her own money - and while she believed she had more cash on hand than Star it wasn't that much more. "Hmm... one question though," Jen said as she looked in the direction of what appeared to be their "Food Street" - lined with restaurants, cafes, bistros and other eateries. "Western or Eastern?" Jen asked, wondering what Star's preference for culinary styles were. As far as Jen herself was concerned, she had no weakness when it comes to food, with the only thing she wouldn't even consider eating being anything that is outright gross. But she couldn't say the same for Star, now could she? |

"Obviously!" said Star with a cheerful grin as Jen mentioned dining, the other girl's voice cutting into her thoughts and chasing whatever darkness had been in them away. She couldn't allow herself to think of that now. She had to remain cheerful, after all, this was supposed to be a fun day. She giggled as she followed Jen out of the store. Why hadn't she thought of food? She frowned and thought about it as Jen asked about her preferences. "Well, I actually like lots of stuff," she said. "I'm from Europe, so I'm used to Western, but I like Asian food too, so it really doesn't matter. What do you feel like eating, Jen?" When it came to food, Star was pretty much adventurous. She would eat just about anything as long as it wasn't too gross or still alive. Most of the stuff they sold in restaurants was fair game. "I chose the shopping, so it's only fair you get to pick the dining," said Star with a smile as she stopped and gestured at the food places that surrounded them. She stretched her arms out and spun around on her heel to accentuate the gesture, giggling as she faced her. "Take your pick!" |

"Well, I actually like lots of stuff," Star replied to Jen's question on what were her preferences. "I'm from Europe, so I'm used to Western, but I like Asian food too, so it really doesn't matter. What do you feel like eating, Jen?" Jen chuckled before adding, "Well, given our financial situation, I'm all for looking for an establishment that offers the best balance between food quality and value for money. I've quite a wide spectrum of likes when it comes to food too... I mean, I used to visit my relatives in Singapore every year during school holidays." The purple-haired girl beamed. Of course, given the two girls' wide range of preferences, it was needless to say that they'd be doing quite a bit of searching. Which was fine by her, since she wasn't really hungry to begin with, just a little peckish. "I chose the shopping, so it's only fair you get to pick the dining," As Star spoke, Jen looked around at the various establishments. As Jen approached an establishment she would check the menu and price list, leaving as she realized the prices were either too expensive, or the items on the menu weren't really to her liking. "I think this one's a good place," Jen said as she stopped outside a Hong Kong themed cafe. "Greetings Miss, how may I help you?" A smiling waitress approached the two girls with a PDA in her left hand. Jen looked at Star to see if the blond girl was okay with her choice of establishment before replying, "A table for two, please." Jen said as she made a handsign for the number two with her right hand. |

"Singapore, huh? Awesome!" said Star, smiling as she followed Jen down the line of restaurants--most of which she couldn't afford on her best day. Back home she had had friends with money though. Here...here she had to get by on her own merit. Which was refreshing in some aspects...and kind of sucked in others. "I've never been to Asia. I traveled a bit within Europe and I've been to...umm...I guess it's the Caribbean? Where the Bermuda Triangle is." She let out a little giggle at that. Kara had been an interesting high school, because of both its location and its students. Some of them even seemed to parallel Hyakujians, although it was a relative few. But it had been really cool going to high school in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle, although she kinda messed that up by again, messing with the Gates. "This is nice," said Star when Jen led her over to a Chinese restaurant. She liked Chinese food, and she was pretty good at using chopsticks as well. It didn't look too pricey either. She could probably afford her own meal, although she definitely wasn't going to offer to pay. Politeness was nice and all when you weren't broke, and she was. |

"Singapore, huh? Awesome!" Star commented with a smile on her face as Jen nodded. "My dad's American, but my mom's Singaporean," Jen added. "I grew up in Los Angeles until my dad got a promotion on his job, and his company transferred him to their new branch in Tokyo. So yeah, prior to this I was - as you've guessed, studying in a Japanese high school." There was a slight break in the conversation as the waitress showed the two girls to their table and took a pair of menu booklets to place on the table. Jen looked up from the menu to pay attention to Star, her fingers idly flipping through the pages. "I've never been to Asia. I traveled a bit within Europe and I've been to...umm...I guess it's the Caribbean? Where the Bermuda Triangle is." "Well, Asia's full of interesting places to visit!" Jen beamed. "For starters, Japan's a great place to visit - of course Tokyo's a must-have for any anime otaku worth their salt... but if you're looking to take a break from all the hustle and bustle of vogue and pop culture, the ancient capital of Kyoto is a good place to visit to get in touch with the country's spiritual side and ancient traditions... and then there's China, but I don't want to chew your ear off with the list of places worth visiting in China alone!" Jen giggled slightly before looking at the menu again. Being the Legacy universe, making orders was made a lot easier due to the conveniences of ultra-tech, and Jen decided to order a set meal; shrimp wonton noodles and barbecued pork, stir-fried French beans and a glass of iced milk tea. It was a simple manner of entering the number corresponding to the menu item in a console on the edge of the table and submitting one's order. "Now this is some high-tech dining!" Jen exclaimed in amazement; it didn't take her too long to figure out how the technology worked, and if Star was having problems, she'd be glad to help out. "Being Hong Kong cuisine and all, some dim sum is a must!" Jen mused as she ordered some steamed dumplings to go along. |

Star made a mental list of all the locations Jen was giving her. She had already seen a little bit of Tokyo thanks to the multiverse, but most of the other places were things that she had only heard of. She wondered if there were differences between Jen's version of the world and her own. There probably were, but from the sound of it, they weren't geographical. She sat down across from the girl. "Wow..." said Star with a small giggle as she began scanning the menu for something to eat. Okay, so they probably could do this sort of thing in her world and she was pretty sure they did in some places, so it wasn't the technology that was so surprising. It was the fact that the food was still affordable. She wondered what this world considered high-end if this was what it considered "normal." "Well, this saves time," said Star with a grin as she put down the menu and moved to study the console. It didn't look too difficult, as long as she pressed the buttons right. "I press this one, right?" asked Star, her finger hovering over the button for a moment. She wasn't completely oblivious when it came to technology, but Jen was so much better in that area than she was and she didn't want to make a stupid mistake. She began punching in her order and sat back as she waited for it to arrive. "So Jen, do you have any powers?" asked Star with a small smile as she waited. |

"Well, this saves time," Star commented as she put down the menu to examine the console's display. "I press this one, right?" the blond girl asked as her finger hovered over one of the buttons on the touch screen. Jen leaned in to take a look. "Yep, that's right," Jen replied, nodding while flashing Star a sugary smile. "You might have noticed how back on the menu each item had a number next to its name, entering the item number will bring up the preview like so..." Jen pointed to the display box showing a photograph 'preview' of the item ordered. "And if you're sure this is what you want, just hit the green confirmation button," Jen continued as she pointed to two larger buttons on the touch screen below the keypad; a green one with the word "Confirm", and a red one with the word "Cancel". Pleased to see that Star had gotten the hang of making her orders, Jen sat back, while Star continued their conversation. "So Jen, do you have any powers?" asked Star with a small smile as she waited. "Well, I guess so..." Jen chuckled as she rubbed the back of her head. "I did after all attend a high school for children with special powers too... except my powers are a bit different from everyone else's." Jen said as she 'drew' circles on the surface of the table with her index finger. "You see... I don't possess superhuman strength and speed, I can't fly or project energy, I don't have psychic powers, advanced ki techniques, magic or an enchanted ancestral weapon," Jen began on the list of things she can't do. "For all intents and purposes I seem like a normal girl... except for my abilities to instantly memorize information from any media, be it books, television or the internet. Well, that usually translates as the power to get distinctions for virtually every curriculum, ha!" Jen laughed a little. "Back then I heard you say you are one who uses her powers from a distance..." Jen decided it was time to have a bit of mutual information-sharing. "So I take it you have the ability to blast your enemies with energy?" Jen asked as the waitress came up to the table, laying down a tray with utensils - chopsticks, spoons, knives and forks - and condiments such as chili sauce, soy sauce and the like. It was clear that it meant their orders would be coming up in a while. |

"Oh, you too?" asked Star with a small smile when Jen said she attended a high school for people with powers. Star had attended one as well. It was really how she ended up meeting all these people, and if she hadn't attended she wouldn't be able to use her photomancy as well as she did now. Then again, she wouldn't be involved either. But that was what you called mixed blessings. Star grinned and leaned back in her seat as Jen asked her what her powers were. "I control the fastest thing in the universe," she said, raising one hand with a flourish. Light flared into her palm, twisting into shapes and colors until it formed a bird. Forming images had always been something Star was talented with. It was making them solid that was difficult. She closed her fist around the bird and it disappeared. Star lowered her hand and gave Jen a smug smile. Her photomancy was something she was really proud of, just because she had it. It was really versatile, and the only problem she had with it was that sometimes she couldn't get enough sunlight. "I charge my powers straight from the sun. Kinda like a human solar cell." she giggled at the description. "But yours are cool too! I wish I could remember everything!" Edited by Lawman, Feb 15 2010, 11:36 PM.

"Oh, you too?" Jen nodded. She had to admit that being surrounded by people with superpowers essentially made her feel like she was the special one. The only one who can't fly or fire energy blasts, but yet being able to hold her own in a metahuman rumble. "I control the fastest thing in the universe," Star leaned back and grinned as she held out a hand with a deft flourish. "Wow, that's brilliant!" Jen commented at Star's light show, clapping as Star formed the bird. "Excuse the pun," Jen giggled as Star dispelled the bird by closing her fist around it, causing it to disappear. "I charge my powers straight from the sun. Kinda like a human solar cell." Star giggled at the description, and Jen could understand why. "Like Superman, I see!" Jen laughed, recalling another solar-powered character who existed in comic books. "But yours are cool too! I wish I could remember everything!" Jen grinned at Star's compliment. "Why thank you, I'd say no one in this world truly possesses the 'ultimate' gift though," Jen replied with a knowing smile. "It all hinges on how one uses them and how much practice they put into developing their gifts and powers." Certainly, if Jen hadn't had the kind of desire for knowledge she possessed her power would pretty much be useless. "Ah, merci." Jen commented as she reached for a pair of chopsticks and a straw while the waitress approached with her order - a plate of barbecue pork noodles with shrimp wontons, stir-friend French beans and a glass of iced milk tea, along with a Chinese steaming basket with five soup dumplings, also known as 'Xiaolongbao'. "I'm liking the smell already," Jen commented as she took a small saucer and placed on it a generous amount of shredded ginger, followed by pouring black vinegar onto the saucer to prepare the dipping sauce for her dumplings. |

"Definitely!" said Star, nodding enthusiastically when Jen said that nobody had the ultimate gift. "Just about any power's got to be useful SOME times!" Except, you know...the ability to talk to worms. That wouldn't be too useful, unless there were lots of worms. Or unless that ability extended to Gummi Worms. Come to think of it, that would be awesome. Killer Gummi Worms! Ah, the intricacies of Star's mind. She looked up as the food arrived, picking up her chopsticks. She honestly hadn't realized how hungry she was until she smelled the food. "Yum," she said with a smile as she broke the chopsticks apart and picked up a piece of food. It slipped the first time she tried. She was a little out of practice with them. The second time, though, she managed to get it. She popped the piece into her mouth. Star swallowed. "Great choice, Jen," she said, assembling her dipping sauce for the second piece. |
