"I honestly don't know. At all. I don't know how high the concentration is, how far it goes back. In my bloodline, we've had elementals. I know for a fact I'm part elemental too. Not to the same extent as Star, I think, or just not in the same way. It's what saved me when my....my elemental partner sacrificed itself to save me. The power, it likely isn't going to kill her....now. I'd need to have all her information, her family tree, all my old texts, just so much information to figure this all out." He shook his head, and leaned against a wall. "This is all just educated guesswork. What I do know is that she's been under surveillance by someone. Something. Long before she came here. Likely, here elemental parentage. I doubt it's a father or mother, though. She'd know this already if that was the case. We're likely going for a grandparent. One more generation and this would likely not happen. Well, whoever it was, they left something within Star's powers. A seal. I don't know how strong it is, how long it will last. But it's there. It'll keep her powers in check for the moment. I think." He said, before smacking himself on the forehead with his palm. "As for suppression........It might not work. Her powers are in such a flux that should she go supernova, nothing would stop it. She'd either blow up whatever building she's in, or erase her physical form from reality. I think all we can do is keep her stable, keep her peaceful, get a counselor for her if things ever get bad, make sure she fights heartless to relieve some light, get her to someplace WITH light so she can recharge naturally, and find a bloody photomancer to finish her training. Again, though...this is all just educated guesswork. I'll keep thinking, see if I can hunt down any elementals for advice. I know a wind one who owes me a favor, maybe he can find me someone..." He muttered, thinking on that possibility. Good go, how does Sherlock Holmes do this?! |

Lavender's face crumpled at Damon's statement - more theories and conjectures, and they still hadn't come to anything concrete. But at least they still have a reference point to work with. Lavender noted with interest as Damon mentioned how he himself was also part elemental, although looking at Star and then Damon, it certainly lends support to what the shadow elemental said about how no two elemental-human hybrid case are the same. "I must admit that elemental genetics isn't something I know about," Lavender chuckled nervously. While she'd seen other half-breeds such as half-elves, the fact remained that these are still flesh and blood beings. How it was possible for humans and energy beings to nuture offspring was something beyond the scientific knowledge taught to her by the SEED Institute. Perhaps someone like Selene would've been of more help in this situation. "That's terrible," Lavender commented on Damon's shocking revelation. "We'll do things your way. It seems like the best shot we have at making sure she doesn't go supernova or something. As for the wind elemental... I don't suppose you could make contact with him? We're going to need all the help we can get. On my side, I'm sending our findings along with a blood sample from Star back to the OASIS Foundation to have their crack team of eggheads to do an analysis and see what they can come up with - if suppression isn't the solution, perhaps a way to reduce or eliminate the compatibility issues between her human and elemental heritages would be the key?" Lavender was no scientist, so she had really no idea how long it would take for research of that nature to make a breakthrough - but as far as the most immediate solution goes, Damon had this in the spades. "As a side question though, I know that no two cases of human-elemental hybrids are alike, but I was wondering... if you're a half-elemental yourself, how come you look more elemental than human?" Thanks to their conversation, Lavender had grown increasingly curious about the interaction between humans and elementals. |

Damon stood there silently at Lavender's question. "I didn't always look like this." He said, simply. "I'm this way because my human state of being is....impossible to live in. The heartless are to blame, as always." He said, his fist clenching. "I was alone when they came. Swarmed because of my ties to darkness. I don't use the malevolent darkness they use, but the natural, neutral kind the earth needs. I still wasn't a match in the end. I was almost killed. My lungs are gone. Completely gone. If I were to revert to human form, I would fall to the ground and suffocate to death." He said, putting it out there as honestly as he could. "This form was unlocked when my partner, Kage, the shadow elemental gave me all it's power. The move was suicidal....but it unlocked a lot of my power. I can't use over half of it as I am now, though. I just can't tap into the darkness like this yet, without risking using myself as material for the elemancy." "My human state was marked.. You know Chizu Yamamura, correct? Well.....imagine a male version of her. Add some height, and.....well, sadly, lengthen the hair." He said, looking off to the side. He didn't like admitting his hair was that long. It was mostly because his girlfriend liked it. "Add in eyes that changed from red to blue, and that was me." He said, before now deciding to answer her other questions. "As for the wind elemental, yeah. He's Chizu's partner, so I'll see him before the day's done. Reducing the differences is a possibility. It could be that her too sides see each other as a virus or something like that. Or maybe it's like trying to fit half a square to half a circle, and we just need to round some edges. Science might have the answer. Maybe nature will. Hell, maybe they both do. Whatever options we have, we have to explore. |

"Your tale is tragic indeed," Lavender replied after the shadow elemental explained how he came to become his current state of being. It was really sad to hear about how he ended up this way, right down to how his (elemental) friend's heroic sacrifice. "I'm sorry I asked," the aeromancer continued, hoping she hadn't hurt Damon's feelings by asking him about what was a particularly painful part of his history. The mood lightened somewhat when Damon got down to describing his former appearance, and inevitably, a smile crept back onto Lavender's face. Imagining a male version of Chizu with blue eyes and longer hair. Talk about Grade-A bishounen material, it wasn't hard for the doujin artist in her to come up with an illustration - she'd love to in fact, but that would have to wait. Whatever options we have, we have to explore." Lavender nodded at Damon's conclusion. "Well, I don't suppose you could call me along if you decide to meet up with that wind elemental, could you?" the aeromancer asked, hoping that the wind elemental that is Chizu's partner is the sociable sort. |

She was three again, and the vines were a forest that stretched on for ages without end. Her hair stuck up in all directions, out of the pigtails that her father had attempted to put them in, and the dress she was wearing was torn in some places and streaked with dirt. But she was three, the sun was warm, the world was big, and it was there for her to explore. That was the day she first saw him. He sat on a stone bench near the outskirts of the vineyard, the endless scenery stretching on on either side of him and behind him. His hair was blond, just like hers, it shone in the sunlight. He was the only other blond Star had seen, television not counting, and his eyes were violet, the same shade as hers, and sad. Very sad. She was drawn to him in an instant. He looked down at her as she approached, something unreadable in his expression. As a child, Star called it sad. Looking at it now, though, from her older perspective, she thought it looked somewhat guilty. Guilt. But the child never noticed, the child was never troubled, and she smiled up at him with her dirt-streaked face, holding out a flower. Set right what was wrong, bring a little happiness to those that had none. Ever since she was a child... The man looked at her for a moment longer, before leaning down and picking up the flower, twirling it between his fingers for an instant. Helios. Star's eyes snapped open. She lay there for a moment, listening to the beeping and whirring of what she assumed was machinery operating in the distance. Star stared up at the ceiling, then looked around, taking in her surroundings. She inhaled, smelling antiseptic--clinical smells...a hospital? No, the room didn't look quite that formal. Infirmary then. So she was still in Arcadia. Which meant that people, she hoped, were interested in knowing when she was awake. She looked up, noticing that there was, in fact, someone looking after her. "Well?" she asked, "You have someone to call, right?" She remembered the smile later. She must have been really disoriented then. |

Damon nodded to Lavender. "He'll be....invisible, to you. I can't even see a real 'form', just the area where he is. His form is sealed, due to a long long story involving him and a demonic chicken. ...Good lord, the people and scenarios I know sound more ridiculous each and every day." He said, upon realizing what just came out of his mouth. What was his life, some insane anime or something? "Chizu's off god only knows where today, and won't be in til late tonight. I'll see if I can't bring Aether in tomorrow. He's seen more than any of us, so there's nobody else I'd rather have giving us information. It's a shame elementals are so hard to FIND these days, I'm starting to worry that the heartless got them too." He said, admitting that one fear. |

His form is sealed, due to a long long story involving him and a demonic chicken. ...Good lord, the people and scenarios I know sound more ridiculous each and every day." "Demonic... chicken?" Lavender went slack-jawed at what Damon said. It is however perfectly within reason that an air elemental would be invisible, however the whole demonic chicken part came as an affront to the aeromancer's critical thinking. Lavender chuckled nervously - she'd heard some pretty wild stories about Hyakuji from its inhabitants, some of whom even are living (or in Otoha's case, non-living) proof of the towns propensity for being a craziness magnet. Granted Nova Oasis had also seen its fair share of inane stuff and has equally quirky inhabitants, but generally insane stuff don't happen in Nova Oasis with the same frequency as Hyakuji, which to the inhabitants of the town is just... Tuesday. "Chizu's off god only knows where today, and won't be in til late tonight. I'll see if I can't bring Aether in tomorrow. "Well... if elementals are manifestations of the forces of nature, it's no surprise that they can only be found in the most pristine places in the world, where nature is still untouched by the encroachment of modern civilization," Lavender replied. "And given the way the world is these days, that is very hard to find indeed." Again, this would prove to be another potential eye-opener for Lavender. Lavender did not fail to notice the young photomancer coming to, her eyes immediately being drawn towards the ward. "Star's woken up," the aeromancer commented. "You have someone to call, right?" Star asked, and knowing now was not the time to reveal anything to the blond photomancer, Lavender nodded. "Yeah, an important call..." Lavender replied, hoping that Star doesn't get too inquisitive at this point. |

Star sighed at the response and leaned back into her pillow, recognizing the "We were just talking about you, but now you're here and so we'll stop," look that Lavender was giving her. It was good to know that she hadn't lost her touch while she was asleep. Except the irritation of being kept out of the loop showed on her face--odd for Star. Usually her emotions, the ones she showed to the public anyway, ranged from happy to happier. She raised a hand and touched her cheek, and slowly the irritation faded from view. "How long do I have to be here?" she asked Lavender, her tone quiet, pensive. She knew the look that Lavender gave her--reading people was one of her special talents. Damon was a little bit harder--he didn't exactly look human--but she thought she saw something in the way he was carrying himself. Or something like that. It was hard to tell. They knew something about her, and she knew a little bit as well. Or she thought she did. After nearly four years of working with him, she knew what her elemental partner felt like, and whatever it was that had pulled the light back into her...that was Helios. She knew it about as well as she knew the back of her...hey, that was new. It really was. Star stared at the red line on the back of her hand for a moment before sighing and placing her hand back on the sheets. It looked like a mild burn, probably the result of whatever it was that was inside her. Words, pictures and memories flew through her head at breakneck speed--J telling her how she was improving rapidly, almost too rapidly, Helios chasing after her at age thirteen for photomancy lessons when all she really wanted to do was go on that date, her Arcadia uniform becoming a mirror image of Helios's usual attire, with a few of her own special touches... What was going on?!? What weren't you telling me...Hel? |
