I've had this idea in the back of my mind for a while, and I've finally decided to write it. Special thanks go to Captain who decided to lend me Meglumar, and Coryn, if he ever sees this, for lending me J.

Thanks guys!

PROLOGUE

“New York City!” said a girl from the top of a building. She looked at the city below her, the wind blowing her blond hair back and in all directions. She was dressed in a black skirt, white shirt and white boots, with a white coat over that. The coat had gold trim at the edges and near the buttons, and was only buttoned halfway down. She turned around and grinned at her companions, her blue eyes glinting merrily in the light reflected off the city below. “The center of the universe, for Westerners anyway. I told you it would surface here. Pay up.”

“Star, I don’t think this is the right time,” said one of them.

He straightened up, barely turning towards her as he kept his eyes focused on the screen that another, smaller girl, was holding up for him to see. He was dressed in black pants and a white shirt, and wore a white jacket over it that, while considerably shorter than Star’s coat, was made in the same style, except with blue trim instead of gold. His hair was long and blond, and his eyes were green. A sword hung at his waist, and his hand rested near the hilt. On his sword belt, he also wore four thermos-sized bottles, which Star knew carried water. It was his ears that made him stand out the most, though. They were pointed at the ends, much like an elf’s.

The smaller girl holding the screen had dark hair, held out of her face by a headband. She was dressed the same way that the boy was dressed, except with a black skirt instead of pants. She was sitting cross-legged on the floor, and was typing away at a small computer there.

“Target appears to have surfaced in the sewers, current location closest to the corner of 7th and 47th.”

The man nodded, turning towards Star. “We need a plan. I’ll—.”

“Alright, got it!” shouted the girl before he could finish. She took off at a running start towards the railing, grabbing onto it and vaulting right over it. Star pulled her knees up closer to her and placed her hand below her. A sheet of light formed just beneath her fingertips, spreading out until she was riding on it.

“H-Hey! Wait! Star!” shouted the man, running over to the railing and grabbing it. Star drew herself up so that she was level with him, tilted her head up to look at him, and grinned.

“I’ll be back before dinner!” she said, turning around and zooming off. The other girl ran over to the railing as well, looking down at Star

“What about the plan?” she asked.

Star looked up and grinned before the light surrounded her, shimmering slightly only once before becoming an instant replica of whatever was on the other side of her, making her, and the platform she was riding on, virtually invisible.

* * *

“I hope you know what you’re doing…”

Star grinned at the girl’s voice, glancing down at her bracelet. It was really nothing more than a simple leather band with a colorless, star-shaped crystal at the center of it, but that crystal was now glowing a bright blue. Her voice came back cheerful and confident.

“Relax, Suzu. You’re talking to Star here, remember.”

Suzume sighed from the top of the nearest building, folding her arms as she heard Star’s voice in her ear. Her earring, a stud made out of the same crystal as Star’s bracelet, except heart-shaped this time, was glowing bright pink. She shook her head, pressing her palm to her face.

“Sheesh,” she said, “Alright then. Don’t make him worry too much.”

“Oh? He’s worrying?”

Suzume glanced to her side at Meglumar, who was standing with his back to her looking over the city. He hadn’t said a word since Star left. Then again, Meglumar wasn’t exactly the most talkative person there was. She turned away and crouched down so that she could see her computer screen.

“You could say that.”

“Well, I guess I’ll have to be extra good then! Whoops, gotta go. Looks like my date is here.”

“Wait, Sta—,” began Suzume. She stopped as the connection went dead. Suzume sighed and tapped her now lifeless earring, shaking her head letting her hand dangle near one of the many concealed knives on her person.

Honestly, that girl.

* * *

Star smiled as she turned off the connection, the platform disappearing beneath her. She landed on her feet as a dark shape rounded the corner. It was just like Suzume to say something like that, but although she didn’t think Meglumar was completely happy with her running off, she didn’t think he was that worried. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t done this before. She stood her ground as the dark shape neared, inwardly focusing all the light that she had been gathering during the day.

Come and get me, tall, dark, and ugly, she thought with a smirk as the creature rounded the corner and charged at her.

He was big, nearly three feet taller than her and three times as wide. If Star had to compare him to anything, a minotaur would probably be her closest estimate. The creature had the head of a bull, with gleaming white horns and narrowed red eyes. The rest of it…well…Star wouldn’t go so far as to call it human, but it was definitely humanoid. As far as sentience went though…well, the thing only had one thing in mind, it seemed.

Kill the girl that smelled like light, whatever light smelled like.

Star yawned. How boring.

She stood her ground until the creature was just a few feet ahead of her. Then, Star extended her hand, a circle of light glowing around her as her eyes flashed gold for just a moment.

“Capella,” she muttered.

The light shimmered in front of her for a moment, then, with a crack, it formed into two short swords. Star grabbed hold of them by the hilt, jumping out of the way of the creature’s charge. She turned one sword in her hand, stabbing at the creature’s back as it passed her. It let out a cry of pain, then turned around to face her, the sword still in its back. Star grinned from where she stood, turning around to face it. She extended her hand, the light forming into what appeared to be a red cloth.

“Ole,” she said with a smirk, holding her other sword in one hand.

The bull-man charged at her again.

“And that’s what happened,” said Star as the three of them stood in Times Square later that evening. “I told you it wasn’t anything to worry about.” She frowned and sniffed the air once. “Although, can we go home? I really need a bath.”

“Suzume?” asked Meglumar, inclining his head towards the smaller girl.

Suzume scanned the screen one last time, before nodding. “That seems to be the last of it tonight,” she said.

“Alright then,” said Star, stretching. “Home it is!”

The three of them began to walk down the street, Star walking ahead of the other two. As they were walking, Suzume tugged once on Star’s shirt, then discreetly dropped out of the crowd into an alley. Star and Meglumar followed. The rest of the crowd moved on, not really paying attention to them or their odd looks.

She could really get used to New York City.

“All aboard!” whispered Star with a small smile as she touched her hand to the alley wall. Light spread from her fingertips, covering the wall in front of her. Star looked back at the other two and stepped back. “After you,” she said.

Meglumar and Suzume stepped into the light and vanished. Star followed behind them, and the light faded away in their wake.

The tropical heat made it way too hot to wear the stupid coats. Star took hers off nearly the second she walked into the building. Star slung the coat over her shoulder as the three of them walked through the hallway. They dropped Suzume off at her room first, before walking down the white halls in silence towards the main office.

“So…” said Star with a small grin on her face as she looked towards Meglumar. “Were you really worried?”

“I am not worried about you,” said Meglumar, “I know you are capable enough.”

Star giggled. “Oh, yeah,” she said, “I figured. But you know how Suzume gets. She’d think that.”

Meglumar nodded once. “Understandable,” he said. “I was not completely at ease. But I was not worried.”

Star’s giggle became an outright laugh as they walked together. Perfectly in step, Star realized. Despite everything, Meglumar was really the only one who could keep up with her. “What?” she asked, “Because little old me was facing some baddie alone in the New York sewer system?”

Meglumar nodded again. “I’d prefer my partner not run off alone.”

“Sweet of you,” said Star with a smile, “But, love, that was nothing if not routine.”

And boring… she added silently.
Who would have thought that hopping between worlds at will, having the whole world just a portal away, acting as a diplomat and mediator for several different worlds when necessary, and defeating evil monsters and threats to peace every single day could possibly be boring? But lately the places all seemed to look the same, the worlds were all familiar, the petty squabbles tired, and the monsters were all predictable. Star was, for all intents and purposes, very bored.

It was sad that the most interesting thing in her life right now was the school work she did for college.

But, hey, at least it was better than having nothing to do at all.

“Mm…I know,” said Meglumar.

The two of them stopped in the hallway as they reached the office, again, Star noted, perfectly synchronized. Star turned towards the double doors that marked the entrance to the office, then back at Meglumar. She looked over his face for any change in expression.

“Admit it,” she said, with a small smile, “You were worried, just a little.”

Meglumar looked down at her, a short pause following her question. “…Yes,” he said.

Star leaned up and gave him a quick kiss before turning around to open the doors. She snapped her fingers, watching with a small smile as the lights turned on. She would never get tired of that. The control over light had its perks.

The office was more of a study, really. The sides were lined with bookshelves, each one of them carrying books that varied in length, age, and material, just like any of Star’s tastes. On the other end of the room was a set of windows looking out over the gardens of the building. In front of those windows was Star’s work desk. A door led from the office to her room. A couch sat between a set of bookshelves as well. Star had kept the study more or less formal and elegant, but the room’s décor seemed to favor orange, yellow, and white.

She tossed her coat onto the couch without even looking, walking over to the desk and glancing down at the assortment of papers on it. College homework, tomorrow night’s star charts, a few crumpled pieces of paper Star had been writing notes on, and an envelope addressed to her. Star frowned at the last one, picking it up. It was addressed to her, but she didn’t recognize the handwriting, and there were no postage marks on it, so she didn’t think it came in the mail.

Not that Kara ever got much mail anyway, what with most of the world not knowing it existed, but more to the point…

She flipped the envelope over, frowning at the seal in the back. A circular wax seal with a single star in it? Her own seal. On instinct, she opened the drawer where she kept the stamp. It was still there, exactly as she left it. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Meglumar approaching the desk. She looked up.

“Trouble?” he asked.

“Not sure,” she said, showing him the envelope. He frowned and nodded, watching as she cracked the seal and opened the envelope. Star frowned, scanning the piece of paper quickly. Star stared at it, not saying anything for a few moments.

“…Star?” prompted Meglumar.

Star looked up over the letter at Meglumar. “It’s from the Restorer,” she said.

Meglumar’s eyes widened slightly. “…But—,” he said.

“I know,” said Star. “I’m the Restorer.”

Somehow, Star didn’t think she would be bored much longer.
