The Black Reaper
The glowing blade sank into the next Heartless and it vanished into a black mist. The scythe's blade cast a ghostly green light over the corner of the scrapyard where Duo had been scavenging. He swung the blade around to take another of the Soldier Heartless that had tried to ambush him, thinking they had found some easy prey. They had been terribly mistaken, and they were paying for their error. Three of the monsters were impaled on the blade as another tried sneak up behind Duo. Without even looking he reached back and gripped the thing by the head, its comrades dissipating as he crushed its skull. He swung around to take out the remaining enemies, and saw nothing. He had just killed the last one. Once he had confirmed that there were no more Heartless around, he let the scythe deactivate and he placed it at his hip once it had retracted.

With the danger passed, Duo let the faceplate of his helmet retract and he went back to scavenging. He had made his living for much his life off scavenging for parts, and had developed a good eye for good tech amongst the heaps of useless junk. While his Deathscythe almost never needed any additional parts or technology, he still liked to look around for anything that could prove useful for any of his other little projects he started to occupy himself. He leaned over one pile and began digging through it, looking for anything of use. He kept the sensors in his suit tuned to catch the sound of a possible ambush, not wanting to get caught off guard again.

"Dang, I never knew this place existed!" Jen said to herself, barely able to contain the excitement in her voice as she skipped past mountains of junk. Just look at all the spare parts lying around - while it may not seem much to many, to this lilac-haired girl it was essentially paradise for her. Just think of all the things she could do with it! Jen chuckled to herself. "This looks too real to be a prop, eh?" Jen mused as she stumbled upon the remains of what appeared to be a HK-24 droid. If it actually came from the Star Wars universe, then... the purple-haired girl reached down and picked up the non-functional droid's blaster rifle, gauging its weight and balance before aiming the weapon at a random target - a discarded refrigerator some 30 meters away; holding her breath, Jen pulled the trigger.

PEW! The weapon made its distinctive Star Wars noise as a glowing red bolt blasted through the old appliance, nearly causing the purple-haired girl to jump - she didn't expect it to be the real thing. Although seconds after firing an electrical crackling sound emanated from the weapon, followed by a dull boom and a wisp of smoke exited the muzzle, accompanied by an acrid smell like that of burnt plastic; age and neglect having taken their toll on the ancient weapon. Jen gagged at the smell, tossing the now-useless blaster away. Reaching into her bag, the purple-haired girl retrieved her smart phone, going through some of the schematics she had personally designed.

With the Florencia incident still fresh in her memory, she was aware of the need to be better prepared - and for now, she would start work by salvaging parts for the flamethrower she had been designing. Amid her random thoughts, Jen soon wandered into Duo's proximity. Looking up, Jen's eyes widened in mild surprise as she noticed a young man in an advanced suit of powered armor sifting through the junk piles. "Uh, hello?" Jen asked as she waved at the armored young man.

Duo tossed another piece of broken junk over his shoulder as he continued searching for something he could use. He figured he could look in this one for a few more minutes then try the next pile and then the next one until he got tired, bored, or hungry, whichever came first. He examined what looked like the scope from an old sniper rifle, then tossed it aside once he saw that the inside was trashed. "Damn, guess this pile's a dud." he muttered, throwing what he thought must have been the third lawnmower engine over his shoulder.

"On to-" He stopped mid sentence as he heard a strange sound echo through the scrapyard. It was unfamiliar to him, but it might have been a weapon of some kind going off. He looked over in the direction where it had come from, and reached down for his beam scythe. Then his proximity radar beeped a warning as he heard a voice to his left. He whirled around at an inhuman speed, the scythe instantly extending and the blade forming as the faceplate on his helmet slid back in place. He was surprised to find that his scythe was pointed at a girl. She had lavender hair, and reddish eyes. "Well, seems there is something interesting in this junk yard after all." He said, the cheerful smirk on his face evident in the tone of his voice. "So, just who might you be?" he asked.

If that was truly a suit of power armor Jen guessed that the young man was wearing, it was no surprise that he already saw her coming. He was quick to respond, with the kind of reflexes one would expect from someone whose skills have been honed on the battlefield - she only caught a passing glimpse of his face from the distance, but when he turned around to face her what she saw was an armored faceplate as the young man pointed a sinister-looking scythe of energy at her. "Whoa! Peace out, dude!" Jen took a step back and raised her hands, indicating that she meant no harm. She couldn't help but notice how much that armor resembled Gundam Deathscythe; albeit scaled down to that of a human-sized suit of power armor rather than a giant-sized mecha - although given her situation she prudently refrained from making any trollish statements, at least not until the hotshot pointing the scythe at her cools down first.

"Well, seems there is something interesting in this junk yard after all." Mini-Deathscythe replied in a cheerful tone. The voice undoubtedly belonged to a man, and a young one at that. Jen heaved a sigh of relief as the realization hit her that whoever was inside that armor wasn't hostile - just being cautious and reacting quite naturally to a potential threat. However, Jen made it clear that she presented no threat. "So, just who might you be?"

"Who am I? Why I'm human, clearly" Jen replied, a joking smile on her face before wagging her right hand. "Okay, I jest." The purple-haired girl giggled, hoping that she hadn't somehow angered him by her jests.

"I am Jennifer Chase, but you can call me Jen," She pointed to herself with her right thumb. "So, how may I address you? Jen asked.

His Heads Up Display displayed all the data about her at the moment that it could detect. She seemed to be unarmed, and his sensors didn't pick up anything unusual about her. He grinned a little more at her quick response to having his scythe in her face. He supposed most normal people would respond in a similar mannner. Either that or pass out on the spot. He watched her for a little longer, noting that she was doing the same to him.

He chuckled at her humorous attempt to put him at ease and found that she had a rather pleasant laugh. He looked her over once more, then let cut the power to the scythe, the blade slowly vanishing as the handle retracted and he placed it at his waist.

"Well Jennifer, the pleasure's mine. If you'll wait just a minute, I'll be able to introduce myself properly." He stood straight and the armor made a gentle humming sound and began to shift, sliding over itself and unlatching in spots where there had been no discernible seam. Slowly Duo was revealed as the suit seemed to fold into a compact backpack, the humming coming to a stop. He shook his hair loose and adjusted his long braided ponytail before turning a broad smile on the girl, his cobalt blue eyes sparkling. He held out his hand, the sleeves of his black shirt rolled up. "Nice to meet, my name's Duo Maxwell."

Whoever was inside the armor laughed - a friendly laugh, showing that he enjoyed the purple-haired girl's jest. Well, that was certainly a good sign as the mini-Deathscythe powered down its energy scythe, the handle retracting as it replaced the weapon on its hip. "Well Jennifer, the pleasure's mine. If you'll wait just a minute, I'll be able to introduce myself properly." The purple-haired girl held her breath, wondering who might be inside that armor. If the voice was any good indication of who was inside, then she figured he must have the looks to match. And before Jen's eyes, the young man unsuited - although the process seemed more reminiscent of a Guyver's de-henshin sequence as the suit opened up and separated into its components before retracting into a backpack.

"Looks like a Gundam, but acts like a Guyver!" Jen exclaimed; or rather, a technological version of a Guyver. Jen's eyes widened as she looked at the young man in a braided ponytail and black shirt standing before her - was he a cosplayer? Regardless, she just couldn't shake off the fact that this guy looked like a character from Gundam Wing! But nothing could prepare her for what came next, when he introduced his name.

"Nice to meet, my name's Duo Maxwell." He spoke cordially as he held out his hand. Jen nodded as she took hold of Duo's hand in a warm handshake, a sunny smile upon her face.

"A pleasure meeting you too," Jen replied, holding back her giggle as she let go of his hand. "Just a random question, if you don't mind - did you happen to be a fan of the anime Gundam Wing?" The purple-haired girl asked as she eyed Duo quizzically.

He cocked his head slightly to the side as she looked like she recognized him. He thought he would remember meeting a girl like her, and he was sure he had never met her before. She said something about "Gundam" and "Guyver" which didn't make much sense to him, though the first did sound similar to the alloy his suit was made out of. She seemed almost a little star-struck, as if he was some celebrity. He was well and truly confused.

"I'm not sure what you mean." he said "I can't say that I have." He knew that there were people from other worlds here, and thought maybe he looked like someone from where she was from. In any case, he decided to to just roll with it and accept the oddness of the situation. "Well it seems like you know something about me, though I can't say the same about you." he said, grinning at her.

"I'm not sure what you mean," Duo replied. "I can't say that I have." Jen should've known better - with the kind of technology this guy has chances are he didn't come from Earth, or even if he did, it would've been in the far-off future. Although Jen could help but wonder about such an era; does Bandai Entertainment still exist? Are they still churning out the Gundam franchise? Needless to say, she was absolutely thrilled - such advanced technology! The gearhead in Jen was simply dying to get a chance to examine it up close; she would love to know how this marvelous device worked, what with herself being the type who likes to know how things work.

"Well it seems like you know something about me, though I can't say the same about you." Duo continued, grinning at Jen.

"Well, I guess it's purely coincidence that you happen to remind me of an anime character, I mean, similar names and all." Jen chucked as she scratched the back of her head. This whole multiverse thing was simply getting more interesting by the day - from making new friends, to reuniting with Yang and her recent misadventures in Florencia. She swore to herself that when she gets back, she would write her multiversal adventures down as a light novel. "Me?" Jen pointed at herself, in response to Duo's interest in her. "Well... I suppose there isn't much to say about myself," Jen said, shrugging indifferently. Her history before enrolling in AHS and personal background wasn't particularly interesting.

"I ended up traveling from one world to another shortly after this whole Heartless thing started, but I never seemed to be able to get anywhere close to home," the purple-haired girl said. "So Duo, what of yourself? How'd you end up here?" she asked, wondering if like many she'd met thus far, was he a refugee from a destroyed world? Or was he another dimensionally-displaced and somewhat confused wanderer who is simply enjoying this once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore the multiverse. Not that Jen herself had a choice - she figured the best chance she had at finding her way back home was to scour the vast multiverse for a Cross Gate that might possibly lead her back to the AHS universe.

Despite the lack of questions she had asked so far, he got the feeling she was just being polite. Something about her made it seem like she was just dying to ask him all sorts of questions. The way she eyed his suit made him certain she was infinitely curious about it. She didn't seem to be the gear-head type, but he had been wrong about people before, and he wasn't about to judge her on her outward appearance.

"I suppose so." He said with a chuckle, everything about him identical to the Duo she had seen in her show. He listened to her as she talked about herself, her story sounding similar to many others he had heard since coming here. He was still getting to this new multiverse, and was still hoping to find his way back to his home, assuming there was anything for him to go back to.

"Well, from what I have learned, My own world is similar to one particular world, perhaps the one you came from. I concluded mine was a parallel world to yours, and the Heartless invasion occurred at the same time as with your world. I tried to fight them off, but I ended up falling through Cross Gate into Traverse Town." He shrugged and scratched his head, grinning a little ruefully. "Thats my story for the most part, and even though I want to get back, I'm starting to kinda like it here. Plenty of Heartless to kill, and plenty of interesting people to meet." He winked at her to let her know she had fallen into the latter category.

Jen listened carefully as Duo told her some stuff about the world from which he came. "Well, from what I have learned, My own world is similar to one particular world, perhaps the one you came from. I concluded mine was a parallel world to yours, and the Heartless invasion occurred at the same time as with your world. I tried to fight them off, but I ended up falling through Cross Gate into Traverse Town." The purple-haired girl's expression crumpled as Duo spoke of the Heartless - everywhere she went, she kept hearing about these beings and the destruction they've caused. "Thats my story for the most part, and even though I want to get back, I'm starting to kinda like it here. Plenty of Heartless to kill, and plenty of interesting people to meet." As Duo finished, he gave Jen a wink - and it didn't take her long to know that means she falls under the 'interesting people' category. That clearly brought a smile on her lips.

Jen chuckled before she spoke up, "I couldn't agree any less on that. I mean, sure, there's the Heartless and all the havoc they've wreaked, but the more I travel the multiverse, the more I want to explore its vastness." For someone who possesses an unquenchable desire for knowledge, this was a dream come true. Besides, even if she found a way back home she wasn't sure if she would want to return just yet - the multiverse was proving to be an exciting place to explore, and she couldn't return home with the knowledge of the Heartless being out there nagging at her - if they were indeed everywhere, then it would only be a matter of time before they got to AHS too. The purple-haired girl promised herself, that using her knowledge, resources and skills, she would play her part in combating the Heartless.

"I don't suppose you're here on a salvage mission, are you?" Jen wondered as she surveyed the piles of junk lying around, and many more stretching out as far as the eye can see - discarded gadgets of varying technological levels, from Victorian-age steam engines, to present-day tech levels, to alien/far-future widgets. With the right knowledge on hand, one could easily rig up an arsenal with all those spare parts lying around; and that was exactly what brought Jen here, although she wondered if the same could be said for Duo. Still, if he could operate such advanced technology, he could be quite a tech wiz too, much like herself.

Duo nodded in agreement as she spoke. Even though he missed his home, he knew that there wasn't much chance it was the same as it had been. The Heartless had likely seen to that. Then again, there wasn't much in that world for him, sure he felt some sadness at losing his mentor, but he had never had any strong bonds tying him down in his old home. The world had generally been cruel to him. Now he had this new start, a chance to make his mark on a new world, or even worlds. He now had almost endless opportunities before him and he had the knowledge and skills to take advantage of a good number of them. He wondered if maybe this girl would be able to help him at some point in the future.

"You guessed right. I decided to come here and see what I could find in this place. Most of it is junk, but there are a few diamonds in this rough, and hopefully I'll be able to find one or two." He kicked at a small wheel that could have come from just about anything and watched it roll across the ground before looking back at Jen. "So what about you? There something you're looking for in this mess?" He asked, curious as to what could bring her into territory frequently visited by the Heartless.

So he was here to salvage stuff too? The fact that Duo nodded told Jen everything she needed to know - it wasn't that hard to figure out, isn't it? Especially with all that advanced gear he was packing - it doesn't look like it could be repaired using facilities on Earth. Jen's mind referred to the Progress Level table in D20 Future - Earth at present is PL 5 (information age), while Domino Town and AHS appeared to be PL 5.5 bordering on 6. On the other hand that Deathscythe armor Duo had clearly looked like a product of PL 7 technology. If he were to look for upgrade or replacement parts, where else in Traverse Town except here? "You guessed right. I decided to come here and see what I could find in this place. Most of it is junk, but there are a few diamonds in this rough, and hopefully I'll be able to find one or two." he said as he kicked at a small wheel; there was no telling what kind of vehicle it came from, but like any wheel it rolled after being kicked. "So what about you? There something you're looking for in this mess?" Duo asked as he turned his attention back at Jen.

"Well, I'm looking to put together a weapon or two," Jen replied as she sifted through the contents of a nearby junk pile. Thus far, what the purple-haired girl was interested in appeared to be valves and pipes, along with other odds and ends - but they all had one thing in common; they were all made of heat-resistant materials, and if Duo were observant enough, he would probably notice at this point what Jen was intending to build. "Gotta have something to defend myself with from all those Heartless that isn't just my fists and feet."
