NICE DRIVE!
Just thought I'd make a thread on this because I was entirely unaware of it till I saw a guy trying to solicite votes on gamefaqs forums. Did anyone else hear about this?

It's basically a contest where people pitched ideas for new X-Box Live Arcade games and the final winner will get prize money and also their game made and released for free on X-Box Live.

Link is here: http://unlockxbox.com/finalist/vote.aspx

I figured I'd inform others and also solicite votes for the guy trying to get people because his game is far and away the BEST of the 8 Finalists and deserves to win. I'm talking about The Artifact. Pretty much every other entry was either stupid or the 2 or 3 that were decent weren't as developed nor innovative.

As I figure some might discuss the games up to vote for here is the commentation I left in the dude's thread:

I wasn't aware of this competiton till I saw this thread while lurking and I felt the need to post and say yours was far and away the best. I'm already a fan of shumps and I think yours brings a lot to the table. There really is nothing else that does the controlled weaponry exactly as you presented and I think typically a weak point for shumps is the storylines (which are usually absent or paper-thin and mostly detailed in the manual) but you've really got something here.

I was kind of let down by the other entries. Arak Attack was decent but not really my cup of tea. Avatar Crash Course seemed redundant and like some avatar game someone would shovel into the Indie Game category to make a few bucks so they can recoup their payment into the XNA Club.

Fowl Play was a frogger clone with powerups and the concept is just childish. Have a Ball felt cheesy to me being set in a Doritos factory. I mean like... Doritos is sponsoring it that doesn't mean you need to plaster it around everywhere.

Thrown is just stupid to me too. There are already plenty of sandbox games with cars in them that you can play to throw yourself out of a car. I dunno... a game JUST about throwing yourself out of a car. Really?

Harms Way didn't interest me and mixing a racer with a fps just seems like pandering to the already big installment of FPS obsessed 360 players that will devour anything with guns in it. Also it really didn't feel like anything new. Anyone heard of Special Criminal Investigation?

The only other entry I really would even consider buying were all 8 for sale is Skies Ablaze. I like the fantasy approach to a genre dominated by sci-fi (though to be far that's not unique at all as he tried to act) and like The Artifact it actually took attempts to have an involving plot ontop of gameplay and multiplayer interaction.

However, I think yours pulls ahead because you've got a very solid plot while the presentation for Skies Ablaze merely mentioned it would have a story. You have a clear passion about the matter most others failed to show and the gameplay mechanic is something fresh. I also think the gameplay aspects could ease in non-fans of shumps.

One problem I think runs a lot of people off from shumps is the inevitable "bullet hell" that occurs in later stages and at bosses. Getting into the genre its pretty difficult to take down the targets you need to and keep your ship free from harms way and I can remember when I first started playing games that leaned more towards the "bullet hell" emphasis at first I had to only watch my ship just to keep alive and that usually meant I was never hitting the enemy.

But in your game it seems like the bosses will have those big attacks and the whole "bullet hell" like segment but once you pull through then you'll get a chance to counter attack while they prepare their next barrage. And of course the control of your weapons as a factor it means you won't just have an easy time to wail on bosses and failure to take down cores and the like would mean suffering through another barrage for your next change. I think that will more readily ease people into getting used to dodging waves of bullets and fire, especially in the earlier levels where you have the less complicated of controllable weapons.

The twist ending is also a nice aspect (and could easily open avenues for sequels) and I think the Artifact as a glados-esque entitiy would probably be well recieved also. The one judge seemed skeptical of the Lasso Laser but to be honest that sounded like the most fun of all the weapons and especially so in a multiplayer aspect so I hope that stays in.

Anyways, check it out and vote for The Artifact if you wanna help someone clearly passionate about gaming, creating games and deserves to win. Also I'm pretty sure every time you vote you're entered in a chance to win a 360 Arcade console. It doesn't matter much to me since I've already got a 360 but I figure some might care so I should mention it.

EDIT: Also if you vote for The Artifact even just once during the voting period then give yourself +1x M-Phone.
