Occupation: Student
Grade Level: 2nd Year
Alignment: Light

Powers/Abilities:

General power: manipulating atoms with her mind.

Power manifests itself as two main abilities.

Expadis – expand/explosion. Offensive power.
Causes atoms to rapidly expand or the particles within them to split so as to cause an explosion of varying size and intensity. Maximum range and intensity are proportionate to training and control (although the occasional unconscious attack unleashed by her body in self-defence could perhaps be more powerful, albeit also causing more damage to herself).

Contradis – contract/condense. Defensive power.
Causes atoms to rapidly contract together so as to create small solid surfaces out of air or water. Can act as a shield or step.

Weakness: causes bruising across the body in proportion to the amount of power expended. Bruises diminish as control strengthens. Unusually excessive use of power (such as in an unconscious self-defence attack) could also drain her physical strength.

Secondary skill: fluency in several languages.

Equipment You Have:

• The clothes on her back.
• A photo of her parents (with a kangaroo).
• Her lucky cricket ball autographed by Adam Gilchrist` `.

Personality Description: two to three paragraphs please

Yumi is a bouncy, fun-loving girl not shy of strangers in the least. Look up extroverted in a dictionary and you would find a picture of her. Not afraid to be the centre of attention, but also content to hang back and observe those around her, the apparent contradiction in her personality is indication of the depth of her mind. Her brain is constantly working away, assessing the dynamics of any given crowd and how she could best assert her stamp upon them.

The strength of her mind is also manifested in the great discipline she is able to practise. Upon discovery of her powers she has spent an hour every day, for four years, without fail, training herself to control them better. This same discipline can be applied to every area of her life – though it rarely is. Yumi is a firm believer in the philosophy that too much discipline takes the fun out of life.

It seems apt that her powers are controlled by her mind, as any physical ability would have been wasted upon her. With little to no combat knowledge, Yumi would be useless in a hand-to-hand fight. Indeed, the only physical activity which she seems to have any kind of talent for is cricket. Which, incidentally, does not require a great deal of physical exertion… hmm.

At 16, Yumi is still coming into her own in regards to the opposite sex, but this is due to lack of experience rather than lack of interest. The desire is there, and should the opportunity arise, she is never one to pass up a challenge. Already a vivacious girl with a wicked sense of humour, it would not take much to turn her into a decided flirt. And woe be to any male who happens to fall foul of her efforts.

Personal History:

Yumi had not always known she was different. Although born in Japan, her parents had uprooted their family quite early in her life and moved them to remote Australia for her father’s career (nature photography). Thoroughly impressed with his footage of deer in Miyajima, National Geographic had requested a similar full-length documentary on the life of the kangaroo, Jane Goodall style. Growing up in suburban Melbourne, Yumi had at first been very disappointed to discover that Australian children did not in fact ride to school on the backs of their pet kangaroos – but only because of some silly prevention of animal cruelty activists ruining everyone’s fun.

At primary school she was an avid cricket player and by Grade 6 was captain of the school team. She also eagerly pursued her other passion for foreign languages, seemingly absorbing the strange words and grammar patterns via osmosis. Quickly becoming bored of the 3 languages offered at her school (once you’re fluent, you’re fluent…), Yumi was thrilled to discover online self-guided language tutorials.

Waking up on her 12th birthday, Yumi completed her daily ritual of saying good morning to herself in 6 languages, then threw off her bed cover in eager anticipation of the day ahead. When half the blanket exploded in a smoky fireball, she nearly had a brain aneurism. As the scent of charred linen reached her nostrils, she realised quickly that this was no dream.

It took the best part of a disbelieving blink for her to decide to forego her birthday picnic plans in favour of exploring the extent of this new-found power. Several singed (but still very much in-tact) blades of grass later, it became clear that harnessing this explosive ability would be much more difficult than at first appeared. The colourful bruises peppering her body also made it clear to her that with power came consequences. Her parents first became wise to her unusual abilities several months later, when a gaping hole in their living room wall greeted them upon their return home (one of her more ambitious experiments had not gone entirely to plan). At first, however, it seemed that she would be able to continue attending her local school, so long as she kept her arms down – abrupt movements seemed to break her control, so it seemed her cricketing days were over. She continued to train on her own for an hour every day, and as the number of bruises coating her arms slowly decreased, so too was she gradually able to consistently create small explosions at will. The only question that remained was HOW exactly she was able to do so.

The answer came nearly four years after her powers first appeared. A family mountain-climbing holiday to the Himalayas could have ended in disaster if not for a new kind of ability suddenly manifesting itself. When the rope securing her to her harness snagged on a jagged edge in the rock-face and snapped, Yumi began to drop the 50m to the ground below. Closing her eyes and bracing herself for death, she began to count. After she reached 50, however, she got bored and rather annoyed at her body for taking so long to complete the fall – honestly, she couldn’t even die properly. Opening her eyes to complain out loud, she was shocked to realise that she was in fact no longer falling at all. It wasn’t that she had landed. It was more like the air beneath her had compressed into a solid mass that was supporting her weight. Jumping the remaining few metres to the ground, Yumi still managed to break her ankle – but that was a lot better than the fate she had thought awaited her. Also, she noticed that the same bruises which had coated her skin when she first began exploding things were once more visible on her skin.

Hobbling over with her parents’ help to a local monk’s hut, Yumi was surprised to receive more than just bandages for her ankle. Instead, the old Tibetan was able to shed much light on the mystery of her powers – which apparently, could be accounted for quite scientifically. It all came down, he said, to simple chemistry. Atoms, to be more precise. Atoms, manipulated by her mind. The power which had earlier saved her life was a kind of compression of the particles in the air around her – by moving the atoms closer together, she had unconsciously created a solid platform for herself. The monk suggested that this power could perhaps be manipulated in other defensive ways also, such as a protective shield in front of her. The offensive power which she had been training with since her 12th birthday, on the other hand, was the exact opposite, he said. The explosions were created by rapidly expanding the atoms making up an object, or even by splitting the electrons from the protons within the object matter. The more rapid the expansion, and the more atoms were split, the larger and more powerful the explosion became.

While Yumi sat back drinking in all this new knowledge about how her mind worked, her parents found it a little more difficult to absorb the ramifications for their only child. Wanting the best for her, they pleaded with the monk to train their daughter to harness her powers. Refusing point-blank (“I am a HERMIT, not a baby-sitter!”) the feisty Tibetan nonetheless was able to tell the Isamu family of a legendary high school located in rural Japan, especially established to teach children with unusual abilities such as Yumi’s.

Two weeks later, Yumi found herself enrolled to start Second Year at Hyakuji High School, alone and on a plane back to the country of her birth.

Arriving to the orientation day with her new books under her arms, Yumi was nervous but also excited about finally receiving some formal training in her powers, not to mention meeting other young people like herself with powers beyond the ordinary. Walking towards the large crowd that had gathered around someone who appeared to be a teacher (the name-tag read “Shiki-sensei”), Yumi suddenly stumbled. This was no act of clumsiness, however – the earth around her feet was breaking up and heaving all around her! At first Yumi thought that she might be the cause of the damage, but she quickly realised that this was far beyond what she was capable of creating.

As the world around them began to be sucked into the inky darkness, Shiki-sensei grinned and shouted out, "Welcome to Hyakuji and enjoy your staaaaaayyyyyyyyyy....'

Yumi wasn’t sure what was happening. All she knew was that she had to stay away from the darkness and follow the path of light, wherever it might lead her.
