Just post the movie you last saw in theaters and your opinion of it. I just got back from seeing Watchmen. Very violent, very risque, but I liked it, like a lot. |

I have many gripes about it, but I'm sure I may be mistaken on several points. This is simply from the point of view of someone who only saw the trailers, never read the source material; your typical movie goer. - Too long Three hours, this movie ran. Often I found myself checking my cell phone for the time, not because the movie was really boring or bad, but just because it was incredibly long. Much longer than I had expected, at least. - Overly Cliche Dialogue I'm almost positive that 75% of the movie's dialogue was done in the "cool" and "raspy" serious voice that had abstract meanings. Though I must admit, I loved it when the guy said "I'm not locked in here with you; you're locked in here with me!" - Advertised differently Since I only saw the trailers and what they advertised on television, I expected a generic comic book movie: Action packed, explosive-ey and just overall fun. What I received instead was a more serious and engaging film. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I was surprised. - Slow Motion Abuse For a movie that runs this long, the same tricks eventually lost their touch for me. It seemed as thought the slow motion technique was abused incredibly in this film. I thought that it was awesome for some parts, but definitely not as much as they used in the movie. - Are They Really Super Heroes? One thing that really bothered me was that I knew they were super heroes, but I wasn't very sure of what their powers were. Of course the blue guy was obvious, since he was extremely distinct, but all I noticed from everyone else is that they could fight well and were much stronger than the average human. Also, one guy had ever-changing ink blots for a face, though I don't really know what that meant. - At Points Really Slow, Other Times Extremely Fast After the beautiful opening scene which drew me into the film, I found it to be rather slow and full of that really low and serious dialogue. The only time where I found it to be really fast was towards the end, where the plot twist was pretty much unveiled within 30 seconds. Considering the pacing I was used to for the most part of the movie, I was even more unaware and ready for it. Of course, there were many parts of the movie I really enjoyed like the soundtrack, the visual effects, and also the awesome look at the lives and mental conditions of the heroes in it, but I can't say that the movie consistently drew my attention. |

I have to agree with the slow-motion abuse complaint. A lot of times it was really unnecessary. I really did appreciate the plot, though, and the slow, pretty talky parts drew me in. |

I recently saw Watchmen at the theaters as well. I was pleased by the movie, but I wasn't completely won over by what was shown on the screen. I will say, however, that some of the bits added into the movie that weren't in the original material were surprisingly good. On DVD, I recently watched Road to Perdition, another movie based on a graphic novel about a mafia hit man and his son seeking revenge for their murdered family. I was honestly surprised this didn't get a lot of attention since this was a very well done film. On another note, I really look forward to Public Enemies, which was one of the trailers screened before Watchmen at my theater. |

Fresh Start?

I bet Mak never read the Watchmen comic book. Watchmen was a great movie, it was directed well the effects were great. Al the heroes were as i pictured when i read the book, etc. I am making a stand that a person should never see a movie before they read the book or played the games or watched the original tv series or movie. He said he didn't, and poo on you Drone. You probably haven't read all the books or seen all the series of whatever movies you seen, and are most likely unaware of it. Lots of things are based on short stories and older movies. Legend, Bladerunner, 3:10 to Yuma, To Kill a Mocking Bird etc. Movie's are meant to be watched. As an aesthetic, I find it offensive when someone tells me that I was mistaken for not doing homework before watching something, and I don't feel I should have to. If the movie is good, it can stand on it's own merits. Legend for example, was not true to the source material, that didn't make it bad. Lots of people found it enjoyable none the less. Yes, it would have put the movie in a different perspective for Mak if he had read the comic first, but it's certainly not a prerequisite. And I'm saying this now. I am not fucking watching all of G.I. Joe just to watch the damn movie. That aside, I enjoyed Watchmen. Edited by Game Machine Joe, Mar 9 2009, 12:26 PM.

TO be honest 99% of the movies i watch are all comedies. So its easy for me to keep to the rule i made. |

But just because you set a rule for yourself doesn't mean others should adhere to it. As GM Joe said above you, I think Mak's understanding of the Graphic Novel before hand may have increased his enjoyment of the movie, but then again it may not have. Graphic Novels, just like Movies in general, aren't for everybody. Moving on, I have a miniature review for a movie called Harsh Times starring Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez. While I ultimately ended up liking the performance of Christian Bale as Jim Davis, a man whose life is spiraling after returning from the battle front and back into a life of petty crime. The rest of the cast, however, is never given a fair treatment and most of their performances are almost completely forgettable. Freddy Rodriguez seems to be going through the material as a mere shadow of Christian Bale while Eva Longoria Parker has a two dimensional personality for a character, added to the face that nothing she does throughout the movie remains memorable. David Ayer, who wrote the award winning movie Training Day, doesn't seem to stray from that same sort of gritty formula that Training Day is more famously known for. To sum it all up, while Bale's performance is good, it's not enough to save the movie from mediocrity hell. I do not recommend it. Edited by Kobayashi, Mar 11 2009, 09:17 PM.

Shocking
|
Last movie I saw was Saw 2 on tv. and i hated it. It's not even a horror movie it's just LETS SEE HOW GROSS WE CAN MAKE THIS MOVIE. Given, it had a uh...unique? Story, but the story kinda got buried really fucking fast under LOOK THIS GUY GOT SHOT IN THE HEAD LOOK THIS GIRL GOT THROWN INTO A PIT OF NEEDLES AND IS DIGGING THROUGH IT LOOK THIS GUY HIT THIS OTHER GUY WITH A CLUB WITH NAILS LOOK THIS GUY CUT THE SKIN OFF HIS OWN NECK YUMYUMYUMYUMYUMMMM Movie theater wise I think my last movie was Twilight :> which was a good movie in that you didn't have to do the research drone thinks you should do to understand it. And of course BLAHBLAH SHITTY BOOK SERIES BLAH, i dont care really, the point was it was a really gushy lovey dovey love story and that's why I liked it. P.s. Cam had his shirt off for a while and I about screamed in ecstasy. Actually I probably did. BUT THE MOVIE I'M COUNTING BEFORE THAT THAT I SAW SECOND OR THIRD TO LAST. Quarantined. Oh. My. God. THIS is a horror movie. It's based (and when I say based I mean pretty much copied scene for scene and made into english) from a spanish film called REC. SOme people bitch that it has the blair witch thing going on with the 'this is a movie shot from a guy shooting a movie's perspective' but when it gets into it that part of the movie is amazing. But uh, it kinda made me dizzy with it spinning all around. I have only two complaints: 1. It went from chillax to HOLY SHIT SHIT IS GOING DOWN in about three seconds. Neck breaking story pacing D: 2. IT ENDED TOO FAST. It went from 0 to 200 like i said and then it's like... it hit a brick wall. You're all excited, climax is building... annnnd then it's over. THE END. anyway you should see it, fucking grade a movie and it's out on dvd now i think You're welcome.

Watch REC. Forget quarantine. I hate how hollywood always takes a huge dump on every great european movie ever made. I was fortunate enough to watch REC first so I won't need to watch the american imitation no matter how well-made people say it is. Watchmen: I have to disagree with Mak on this one. The movie fucking blew my mind. See the problem here is people hear the words 'comic book' and 'super heroes' and already picture shitty stuff with poorly-written scripts which only 10 year olds find interesting (i.e. spiderman, x-men, the 1st hulk, every single superman movie, the first 4 installments of batman, etc;), instead of a brilliant story/script like dark knight or watchmen. I didn't read the comic but I had an extremely vague idea what it was about and was very surprised in a positive way. Sure there are cliches, name a movie that doesn't have them! Still, cliches work when you know how to use them; same goes for length (which was necessary in this case to compress the whole, complicated story into a single movie instead of making yet another trilogy), and everything else for that matter. My only complaint were the superfluous love scenes. Regarding the powers I thought it was a brilliant thing that the whole fucking movie didn't focus on the ZOMG OH SO COOL POWERS for once! They're meaningless, they're NOT the point! If you look at the character's mere aesthetics and focus on explaining each of their powers you lose sight of what the story is really about! Who cares why they're stronger, faster or skillful fighters? There's a reason why they became super heroes right? Right, so that's it, they're super heroes, move on! Unlike x-men and its stereotypical nazi xenophobia as a cheap excuse for a plot, Watchmen actually makes you think. It surprises you with an unconventional story in which your same old, do-gooder super heroes find themselves challenged by a greater truth than that dictated by their morals and beliefs, a questionable solution for the greater good, but a solution nevertheless. I believe the twist, the unveiling of the plot in such a short time was necessary for it to be effective, for the climax could not be achieved without such buildup and the shock effect wouldn't have been half as powerful. Bottom line: Do not look at this movie as a regular, commercial comic strip-based money-maker. Enjoy the length of the movie's rich images, film-noir atmosphere and narrative and the depth of its story. Just my personal opinion. PS: SAW? they're all a huge pile of shit and I don't need to have watched them to know that. |
