John couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as he looked over the object Selene was gazing at for a split second. While it definitely seemed expensive, John couldn't help but admire the craftsmanship of the piece. John didn't know that he actually knew someone who could craft something this good, but John didn't really seem to mind moving on all at the same time. Moving along to the bookstore, John kept glancing over at Selene trying to figure out what she was thinking at the moment.

"My apologies for the momentary diversion," Selene quickened her pace to catch up with John, before slowing down to match his own pace as she reached his side. "For a moment there those glass figurines at the window reminded me of what a friend of mine does for a living." That being said the British heiress pointed with her thumb to the gifts shop they had just left behind.

"Thinking of any books in particular?" Selene asked as the two of them arrived outside the entrance to the bookstore.

"The only thing I can really think of off the top of my head is The Reader."

The choice may have seemed a little odd coming from someone like John, but stories like The Reader have always intrigued him. Simple premise aside, the journey from boyhood to manhood and true love amongst trouble has always been something that John could get into. Plus, John heard the movie was good, so he decided to read the book before watching the movie.

"Any you? Anything?"

"The only thing I can really think of off the top of my head is The Reader," John replied. Selene nodded her head in response - so it seemed he had a good eye for literature. "And you? Anything?"

The British heiress scratched her head as she contemplated John's question. "I think I'm getting something for a friend of mine back home... he's been reading light novels in their untranslated format for quite some time, and asking if I could get something for him," Selene replied as her eyes scanned the fiction section, namely the part for light novels.

"Nice. That's awesome that you actually keep in contact with friends back home. Your friend must be really important to you."

John couldn't help but smile as he thought about some of his friends back in America before turning his head away to look for a copy of The Reader in English. While John didn't mind reading Japanese, John couldn't help but feel more of a connection with the text if he read it in his native language. John continued to scroll through the selection, trying to figure out if this bookstore even sold books in other languages.

"Hmm..."

"Nice. That's awesome that you actually keep in contact with friends back home. Your friend must be really important to you." Selene smiled warmly as John said that.

"Thank you," the British heiress replied. "It's a piece of my heart that I carry with me wherever I go," referring to how she kept in contact with her friends in Britain. Selene picked up an omnibus of Hiroyuki Morioka's space opera novel, Crest of the Stars, the complete trilogy conveniently repackaged into a single collection. She knew her friend had an eye for science fiction; not so much for the dazzling fireworks, which she knew is something this series doesn't offer much in the way of, but for character development and politics.

"Say John, able to find what you're looking for?" Selene asked as she looked over to John's side.

"Not yet."

John spoke over his shoulder as he looked through a row of books off to a nearby shelf, an actual foreign language book section that contained both popular and classic novels translated into English. Amongst those books, in between a copy of the King James Bible and a copy of Lolita by Vladamir Nabokov, was the book that John was searching for. Pulling it out and holding up for Selene to see, John smiled slightly.

"Found it."

"Not yet." John replied, briefly looking over his shoulder as he went through the foreign language books section, and while he searched for The Reader Selene stood behind him.

"Found it." John gave a slight smile as he turned around to show Selene what he just found.

"Well, good for you," Selene replied cheerily. "So, I suppose that's it then?" The British heiress said as she looked in the direction of the cashier.

"Yep, that's it."

John finally rose to his feet and clutched the novel in both hands, anxious to read it when he parted with Selene. In the meantime, however, john decided to take Selene over to whatever part of the mall she was interested in next. There was a short line in front of the register, and it only took John a single moment to pay for his book before waiting for Selene.

"Anytime you're ready, I'll take you where you want to go."

"Yep, that's it," The queue before the cashier wasn't particularly long, so they didn't have to wait that long before paying up for their respective books. John was ahead of Selene, so he made his payment first before waiting outside for the British heiress to make hers.

"Anytime you're ready, I'll take you where you want to go," the electromancer asked Selene on where she intended to visit next.

"Thanks, it's been a good day," the British heiress replied with an earnest smile. "I suppose we could make another stop somewhere else before we call it a day..." Selene tapped on her chin contemplatively, deciding on where to go next.

"Ah well, next stop, electronics..." The mage mused as she pointed to a store upstairs that sold handheld communication devices - cellphones, PDA's, smart phones and the like.

Electronics.

There was an interesting choice, especially since Selene knew about his current situation regarding unemployment. However, John agreed to take her wherever she wanted today, so John held back and nodded, ready for her to lead the way. It didn't hurt so much as it irritated, thinking about a possible run-in with his old coworkers.

"Alright, let's go."

"Alright, let's go." John replied, and Selene noticed his expression... did he seem irritated?

"Umm... John," the British heiress lifted a hand. "It's not the electronics mega mart you used to work at we're visiting..." Selene said sheepishly as she pointed upstairs. The electronics mega mart was on the same floor as the bookstore they just visited. Upstairs was a smaller shop that specializes in mobile devices, as opposed to the electronics mega mart which boasted a wide range of goods from home appliances to desktops.

"But I won't talk about it any more if it brings back unpleasant memories, that I can promise," The British heiress hoped her mention of a taboo subject hadn't soured her friend's mood.

"...huh."

John had forgotten that they had ventured upwards to the bookstore they were just in. Laughing sheepishly, John's cheeks turned a rosy color obviously showing his embarrassment. However, that embarrassment faded away once John looked up and noticed someone familiar walking towards him and Selene. It was John's old boss, a short, balding Japanese man in a Gray collared shirt and black slacks supported by a belt. The man waved John over as he got closer, which prompted a questioned towards his friend.

"John, thank god I ran into you!" The man spoke, out of breath as he held out a white envelope with John's name written on it in English. After the man regained his breath, he began to explain why he'd approached. "This was left for you a few days ago. I would have called you before, but we lost your number."

John nodded in question as he looked down at the envelope, shortly after tucking it into his right back pocket before questioning his old boss about the envelope. "Alright. Who left it for me anyways?"

"I don't know, she wouldn't give me her name. American woman, looked middle aged. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she was your mother." The boss said, letting out a slight laugh as he backed away, nodding towards Selene before taking his leave.

"Well, if that wasn't strange I wouldn't know what was." John said somewhat sarcastically as he looked over at Selene. "Sorry about that, where is this place?"

Selene watched as embarrassment painted John's cheeks a shade of rosy pink as the electromancer laughed sheepishly, although it quickly faded when John saw someone walk in their direction - a short, balding Japanese man in a gray collared shirt and black slacks. The British heiress noted that John must have known this man, as he waved at John to come over.

"I take it he's someone you knew?" Selene asked as the man walked over.

"John, thank god I ran into you!" The man panted as he held out a white envelope, with John's name written on it in English. It took him a while to catch his breath before he continued, "This was left for you a few days ago. I would have called you before, but we lost your number."

"Alright. Who left it for me anyways?" John asked as he took the envelope and pocketed it.

"I don't know, she wouldn't give me her name. American woman, looked middle aged. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she was your mother," John's ex-boss replied, laughing slightly as he nodded towards Selene before taking his leave.

"Well, if that wasn't strange I wouldn't know what was," John's answer bore a tinge of sarcasm as he looked over at Selene. "Sorry about that, where is this place?"

"It's upstairs, near the escalator," The British heiress replied as she waited next to the ascending escalator for John to follow. Looking up, one could make out a shop' signboard and a display window showing a range of mobile devices.

John tried to put the sealed envelope out of his mind as best as he could, feeling that anything sent over snail mail couldn't have been all that important. However, as John thought about it more and more, he couldn't help but think that the middle aged woman, the other American, was in fact his mother. Aside from Selene and Adona, the only girls that spoke any English were back in America.

"Alrighty. Last stop!" John called out as he boarded the escalator, keeping his eyes open for the store coming into view. When the store revealed itself, John couldn't help but grin a little as he noted the prices on the store windows. With competition like this and layoffs coming his old store's way, there was mental speculation that maybe his old job would soon no longer be available to anyone.
