Gennosuke made his way up the winding mountain road, a large bag slung over his shoulder. Of all the luck, the school was closed when he got here. It would be a little bit before it opened, so a tour of the town wouldn't be a bad idea. He half-wondered if his father knew he was alive, and if the crime lords of the town were looking for him.

"Nah. That old goat's probably just trying to figure out how ta replace me." It was relaxing, being around nothing in particular. And from the very top of the mountain, he could get a good enough view of the town to figure out where to go next.

Besides, it would be a perfect place for him to try and figure out where he was going wrong with his swordplay. The master he had fought two years ago could freely shift between those stances, and could hold them much longer than he could. "Maybe it's the difference in our age?" No traffic was around, so he assumed his climb to the top would be unhindered, in almost every way possible.

As Gennosuke walked a strong wind began to blow. The leaves began to move, swept by the breeze, which raised a cloud of dust which covered the youngster, blinding him momentarily.

When he was finally able to see, a man was standing facing Gennosuke a few yards ahead. He wore a long, black kimono and was wearing a strange mask. If the boy knew anything about his own culture he would know that the long nose and distorted features represented that of Tengu, legendary demon spirits of Japanese mythology who often pray on mountain travelers.

"You have trespassed my sacred mountain! Now... you must pay!"

The man's voice was loud and deep and carried undeniable authority.

Gennosuke rubbed the dust from his eyes and his outfit, staring at the traditionally dressed man. He tried to grasp why someone would wear such a ridiculous mask. Or even dress in such a way... Then again, he sounded serious and even though he looked strange, something was... WRONG here.

He should try and play it safe for as long as he can. The youth chose his words slowly and carefully. "I... Had no idea this mountain was a sacred place." He wasn't scared. Really, he was more curious and intrigued than anything. Already though, his hands were on his bag, ready to open it at any second.

"THERE IS NO EXCUSE!"

The voice boomed loudly, echoing on the rocky walls and thick woods of the mountain.

"I have watched this mountain for thousands of years and not once... NOT ONCE, have I allowed ANYONE to pass through!"

At that precise moment a car appeared around the corner of the road, the volume of the stereo loud and noisy. It passed them by and continued its way up until it was out of sight. A drop of sweat could be seen on the man's head during the following uncomfortable silence, until he finally spoke again.

"So now I shall take the price for threading its sacred grounds, which is... your life!"

The masked figure started running towards Gennosuke, its hands out of view behind the thick black cloth.

The young man watched the car go past, nodding to himself. He was dealing with a crazy mountain spirit, or a crazy man. It was time to fight him with logic and reason and pray that he listened. "Then get those people who just passed you! Or, y'know, cause a rock slide and destroy the roads!" As the man ran towards him, Gennosuke pulled his bokken out of his bag with one fluid motion, and threw the bag at the charging man.

"Bring it! I don't have any intentions of dying here!" He half-way hoped that another car would drive by. Mysterious men in masks who were trying to kill him were NEVER a good thing.

"I don't know what you're talking about, I didn't see anybody!"

The bag was suddenly sliced in two in mid-air as it approached the man. He didn't seem to have pulled a sword or even a hand from within his kimono though.

"And I will not hurt the mountain any further just so vermin like you come and dig your roads again! It's easier to just kill the whole lot of you one by one, mwahahaha!!"

The laughter seemed a bit over-dramatic but he continued advancing nonetheless.

"No use trying to fight, it will only make it hurt more!"

As he said so the wind blew again and the ground seemed to shake as the man gave one last step and jumped towards him.

He had to have some sort of weapon, and with the bag obscuring him, Gennosuke didn't see him pull it. Or he was moving fast enough that he DID see it, and just didn't realize it. Worst case scenario? He was using some bizarre form of ki, and could splinter his sword just as easily as he destroyed the bag.

Being a pragmatic man, Gennosuke started running backwards, sticking to the curve of the road, hoping to try and talk some more sense into the man thing. Well, until the man thing jumped at him. Out of pure instinct, Gennosuke brought his sword down onto the face of the mask, hoping the two colliding forces would be enough to make good his escape.

*CRACK*

Maybe it was Gennosuke's luck, maybe it was pure skill, or maybe the Tengu man miscalculated... but the wooden sword hit the wooden mask straight in the middle, though it wasn't enough to break it. The hit did stop the man's attack however, who instead of falling flat on his back the way he was supposed to, simply stretched his legs and landed softly on the ground, somehow stopping the huge momentum of his jump as if he could fly.

The masked man stood right in front of the Gennosuke for a moment without saying anything, then turned his back and bent holding his face over the mask.

"Owwwwwwwwch!!!! Are you crazy?? Why did you have to hit me so hard!? I didn't even touch you yet! Aaaaaarrrggh!!"

"I... ...What? You said you were going to KILL ME. I'm sorry I swing hard when people say they're going to TEAR ME INTO LITTLE PIECES." Genno put the sword across his back, staring at the man.

"And I'll swing again, if you don't give me a good explination for what you ARE and why you tried to kill me." His tone was meant to be completely serious, but it was obvious he was trying to not laugh at the poor man.

"Swing... again?"

Suddenly the man stopped whining and his head slowly turned over his shoulder to look at Gannosuke seemingly from the corner of his eye.

"Are you challenging me, boy?"

He rose very slowly and as he did, the wind seemed to start blowing again. Or so it seemed; but if Gennosuke was familiar with it, upon paying good attention he would realize it was no wind... it was ki. The leaves on the trees, the dust on the ground, small pebbles on the road and the air itself... were being pushed by ki.

The man turned to face him completely.

"Then I won't hold back! You have challenged a god of the mountain, a guardian spirit of the woods and holder of great power! Be ready to meet your maker, boy!"

The man gave a step and the ground shook with such force that it cracked under his foot.

Genno stood there, appraising his newest opponent. A god. He just inadvertantly picked a fight with a god. And while he was terrified, there was a shiver going up and down his entire body. This was something new, something great and terrible. He assumed his own father could take down a god like this. This ki though... This pressure... He wasn't sure he could stand up to it.

"I already said I had no intention of dying here, mountain god! I also said I wouldn't swing once I got an accurate description of yourself. This... Is good enough. But I won't hesitate to fight you if you're set on killing me!" His stance was still the same relaxed way, but gave the impression that he was ready to spring as soon as the god did.

"Then fight!"

Saying nothing more the masked figure darted forward. The ki rushed forward before the man even moved though, tearing violently at the young student's clothes, turning them to shreds in a split second and before Gennosuke could even blink, the man was already standing before him, a blurred fist merely a thought away from slamming into the boy's face...

Gennosuke set his mouth, allowing the blow to connect with his face. As he saw the blow coming a split-second too late, it was already too much to ask for a dodge/counterattack. He tried, bringing the sword to bear onto the man's mask one more time.

"I can't die he-!" And then, he was punched in the face.

Only he barely noticed.

*CRACK*

The mask was hit one more time, only this time the blow was enough to split the wooden mask in two.

The man's fist was still touching Gannosuke's face, barely making contact with the boy's skin as the man stood motionless, his mask falling to the ground with a dry thud.

"I was right about you, you seem to be a very brave kid, Gennosuke-kun."

Once the mask had fallen there was nothing to hold Master Yun's long white hair anymore, so it let itself down, almost reaching the man's knees. His eyes were closed and he was smiling at Gennosuke quite innocently.

He retrieved his fist and his posture became very relaxed as he took out a gourd of sake from somewhere inside his kimono and took a sip.

"My name is Yun. You will make a fine student."

"...Yun? Well, I should probably call you Master Yun, huh?" All of the tension in his body completely disappeared and he pulled the sword back, wondering if he should be confused or happy that he wasn't actually going to be smashed into the face of a mountain.

"I'd introduce myself, but it really seems like my reputation preceded me." He let out a breath and laughed a bit to himself. "I... I don't know a thing about you, though."
