NICE DRIVE!
So I've been in a very big mood to post much today and I've kind of been wandering with my interests. Long story short I came across my back-up DVD-R for all my music (meaning the music I took a part in creating either when I was in a band or solo). After copying it back over and getting nostalgic I decided I'm going to slowly upload the complete body of work I've done to share with the site.

Why? You might ask? Well, back in the day it was always just kind of known "Oh, Hiro's in a band and makes m00sics" but beyond a few people we had doing that sort of stuff anyways I rarely threw stuff up for the site to hear so now Imma share it all. And we'll start with something small and solo... Also, I'm going to reserve the next few posts so I can keep all the future uploads grouped.

I encourage anyone interested to download, check it out and discuss~

1) The Bottom of the Spiral

What is it?:
A short 5-track conceptual remix album of 3 songs from the Nine Inch Nails album: The Downward Spiral

Story?:
I think it's easy to make the claim that emotion is a very powerful basis and thing to be expressed through music. This little Remix Project came about during a time in my life where for lack of many details I was depressed and in a very bad place. Depression usually fosters apathy and that was certainly there, but for me it also brought about this very burning need to be expressive.

This was already past the point where I was in the original main band I used to play with so my main means of doing anything musically was arrangements or remixes on my own. I'm not sure why, looking back now, but three tracks from The Downward Spiral really stuck to me and so it was from there I springboarded to the end result.

I can't really comment on the moment then or what exactly I was thinking. These remixes were something I simply decided to do, did so and then was done rather quickly. Anyone that knows much about NIN will know about the Remix NIN site. I did these before that existed and without the aid of mastertracks being thrown everywhere I merely hacked up the songs and some of the mixes on Further Down the Spiral and patched together my own sort of monster.

Looking back at it now though I can see I had some sort of clear thought within it as far as conveying emotion. The clear theme for the remix set is the song "Mr. Self Destruct" owning 3 of the 5 arrangements. It opens with a rather light arrangement of the song that aside from being rather reserved is also devoid of the song's lyrics and thus message. From there it flows into the 2nd remix of the song which now builds from the simple noise not only becoming more composed as a true song but also more raw and chaotic. The 3rd track is a break from this progression as a remix of the song "Eraser" which aside from being an eerie break from "Mr. Self Destruct" might also be seen as a breaking point in the emotional progression of the songs themselves.

After this comes the climax, the fourth track and third and final mix of "Mr. Self Destruct" which at this point is completly becoming intense noise even to the point that it begins to fall apart as even being a standard put-together song itself. Finally, the little project closes ominously on a remix of the original album's title track "The Downward Spiral."

2) A Model Planet (The Openers)

Alright so now we move on to the actual main band I was in. This covers roughly like from when I was 15/16 up to 18. For the brunt of our career we were known as The Openers. This came up solely due to the fact that in our sort of preperatory phase of writing our first few songs and what not we managed to earn the right to perform at a few places as the opening act, since we were opening every show we had got right away we decided to call ourselves The Openers.

Some random fun facts.... we played a ton of shows, too many to keep count of, towards our peak we actually started to make a headway into the greater local punk scene (IE: not just the town we live in, but a larger place) and were working out a deal of getting signed to a local record label. Our drummer then quit on us with delusions of grandeur deciding he would make music entirely by himself and be like his idol Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame. This brought playing shows to a screeching halt and also ended the small label deal since we had no drummer to record an album or play shows. Wah wah lots of stuff happened and our Rhythm left to join the army because he felt trying to go on from that point was futile. Daniel and myself tried to carry on, he was losing interest, we picked up a new drummer and played a few more shows before Daniel pretty much just gave up on things for lack of interest. Post the big fallout the appeal of being called The Openers started to wear off and the band was renamed A Model Planet and yes... we did take advantage of its abbreviated AMP.

Band Line-Up:
Daniel: Guitar/Vocals
Dustin (Hiro): Bass/Vocals
Fairley: Drums
Nate: Rhythm Guitar
Matt: Replacement Drummer

Nate doesn't appear on the set of demos that were the earliest things, we picked him up shortly after. Nor does he appear on the Newest Demos as those were done post-fallout. Matt only appears drumming in the Newest Demos as he replaced Fairley.

And now for some photos:

Me catching air at practice... I'm always a big supporter that bands need to actually move around and engage the audience and even though it's something I think everyone has to learn and get used to at first, there's no excuse especially if you're performing before people to stand there like statues.

Samples:
Going to roll with 2 of my favorites we had selecting specifically to showcase a song that I sang and one I just did backing for. Should be said upfront that our primary singer, Daniel, can't sing himself out of a paper bag. Anyone really into punk will know all the emo stuff with light voices and very technical singing is far from punk and in the real deal it doesn't matter how well you can sing (just look at Rancid) still... he sings terrible, just being up front about it. A lot wanted us to swap places, but he was too prideful to ever consent to it.

My Favorite Song we had:

Downloads:
Earliest Demos: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2JHW4ZGO
INFO: All very very early on, all very very terrible to just be perfectly honest. The 2 live tracks are the very first time we performed ever at the school's talent show. The Potter should come first between the 2 (Fun Fact: We opened every show we ever performed with The Potter, it was a staple). The track Dreamweaver would mark my first moment in actually writing one of our songs although in this period I still never sang outside of backing vocals.

Demo This: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5XT53CNY
INFO: This is where the body of our recorded work came. After picking up Nate and improving profusely this is the little demo album we threw together to get shows with and people actually bought quite a few copies off of us despite being demos. Some personal facts in this from me... "Renee" marked my first song I wrote, tooled out the music and sang. I do plenty of backing vocals across the board but the only other song I fully sing was my 2nd endeavor in composing an entire song alone "High School Showdown". I also wrote "Hardcore Happiness" but it just sort of worked out with me not singing it. "M.E." is actually about a kid we went to High School with that well... I guess just to be fair we had a lot of animosity with.

Newest Demos: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4CBFEX3U
INFO: Few in number and actually 2 are just retakes off songs on Demo This and the third never even got its drum track laid out. Despite that I do feel at least for myself that my own vocal performance in the retake of "High School Showdown" is vastly superior to the original version. Matt whiffs up the drums a lot but he was eager to hear how we sounded and pushed recording some demos asap.

We had a lot of videos of our lives performances but the guy who taped them all sort of up and vanished before he could make us copies. It's a sad lost because to be honest I think we were the type of Punk Band where our A Game actually comes in being live rather than in set recording.
