Past midnight again. It seemed ever since finishing his training Eiji hadn't had a decent night's sleep. He used to be able to simply close his eyes and doze off, even if his sleep was always so light that an ant walking next to his bed could wake him.

Business had been good for a while now, most matters were smoothly taken care of by his people; in the end it paid to take the time to find able people and train them over and over again until he was sure they could handle every situation in the most professional way. As a result, Eiji's people rarely bothered him with nuances unless it was something truly important and thus, he had a lot of free time in his hands in comparison to before, when he first stepped up as Hyakuji Branch's leader.

After the Apostles' incident he had taken up the habit to walk the city at night, unable to sleep more than a couple of hours every day.

Tonight, his wanderings had taken him to a place he never frequented. He didn't have any dead relatives or friends to pay visit to at the cemetery and if he did he wouldn't really care to. But the open gate and the strangely peaceful atmosphere had drawn the man in.

As he walked around the desolated landscape of monochrome headstones, Eiji Ishida wondered if one day he would end up inside one of those graves. He never thought about dying really... somehow deep inside, Eiji felt he wouldn't ever die... he couldn't die.

She was lost, again. And it was dark. And she was very, very nervous.

Kaoru was lonely, again. She had asked where exactly Eiji had gone, but no one knew. 'He went on a walk' they told her, 'go back to your room'. But she didn't want to do that at all. She wanted Eiji. She hadn't seen him in so so long...

So here she was. Alone. Walking through the darkness. Clutching the teddy bear Jameson had gotten for her... just incase things got bad.

"E-Eiji? Eijiiiiiiiiiii!" Kaoru called, stopping not too far from the cemetery, her body suddenly stiff. She was independant most of the time, and hard headed... but the idea of death and the dead still frightened her horribly. The little girl tensed, whimpered, and took a step back, but called anyway. "Eiji are you there?! Where are you!"

She had chills.

Had Eiji been a normal person he would have probably fainted or worse. Suddenly hearing your name being called by a screechy, high-pitched voice in a dark cemetery after midnight wasn't something most people could simply shrug off.

Eiji however was surprised at best. Not surprised by the fact that somebody might actually be good enough to have followed him there without him noticing it, but because of who it was. Eiji could tell that voice apart in the busiest crowd in the middle of downtown Tokio.

He was surprised that she had seemingly managed to bump into him there, but he knew it was no coincidence. He and Kaoru, ever since he met her... they had this...thing. He still didn't know what it was but Eiji had always felt he knew her from... always. She was the one and only person in the world he admitted to care for, at least to himself. That worried him sometimes, for it meant he did have a weakness.

No matter how, Kaoru always found her way to him... always; and despite him not being too happy that the girl disobeyed and managed to somehow sneak past her bodyguards- some of the best money could buy, Eiji was always glad to see her. Kaoru... she made him feel things he normally didn't. She was the only person he was weak against.

Her voice echoed everywhere in the cemetery, the sound bouncing from grave to grave.. so instead he followed her ki.

"And just what do you think you're doing in the middle of a cemetery in downtown Hyakuji after midnight?"

His voice wasn't reprimanding but rather curious in tone. Honestly, how on earth had she gotten there? He was sure not even Lillian would be able to find him there even if she tried.

She screamed.

Maybe Eiji was okay in the dark of night, but she wasn't. She was terrified, but she had wanted to find Eiji so so badly... So she risked it. But now someone was attacking her! It had to be a ghsot or something, being so close to the cemetery. Butn when she spun around...

"Eiji-kun!" She squealed, and ran to him. The girl threw herself willingly into the boy's arms, still completely ignorant to what he really was. A murderer, the leader of a whole mess of them, but she didn't know. Would she even care if she knew?

"Eiji I missed you... No one ever visits me anymore and everyone at home is boring..." She huffed softly and grabbed at him tighter. "Are you busy? We should go get ice cream." The girl spoke thoughtlessly, innocently, and just spoke perhaps to fill the silence. She always wanted to see Eiji very badly, but when she did... she never had words. She just wanted to be with him, be near him...

She snuggled against he man. "I missed you."

He remained quiet and still.

Why?

It was no secret to him the girl loved Eiji... but as many times as he'd asked himself in the past he couldn't come up with a decent answer. He wasn't really the one to save her from the spirits in the cursed amulet... it was Hiro- well... Bakura, or both. Eiji had cared enough back then to seek Hiro's help though; that was yet another thing he did not understand. Why did he?

Slowly, Eiji's hands rose to caress the girl's auburn locks. His gaze was still somewhat lost as he spoke.

"People don't sell ice cream at this time of the night, little girl."

Every moment he spent with this child the bond grew stronger and he knew it. Perhaps that was the reason why he was absent so often; being near her made him different... softer. He couldn't be that person again... not after all he'd done.

And yet here he was, hugging a little girl who trusted him blindly, no questions asked. What would she say once she found out who... what he really was? He'd have to deal with it when it happened.

"How did you find me, Kaoru?"

He knew that somehow the girl could always find him... no matter where he went. He knew many things that could be considered strange about his relationship with her, many little details most people would only regard as mere curiosities or coincidences; but Eiji didn't believe in those. He was sure there was a reason why he had ended up taking such a liking to her, he only had to find what that was.

"I really want ice cream..." Kaoru pouted, her lips against Eiji's neck. She loved being so close to the man. He was her only friend anymore, the only person she had in the world. And she saw him so little..

"I dunno how I found you... i just started walking and calling you..." She nuzzled agaisnt his neck and pulled away, then smiled up at him, tilting her head for a moment and then blinking, her grin widening. "Oh! Look!" Kaoru shoved from his arms and spun around, pointing to a pair of bright green barrettes in her hair. "I got them just a little bit ago, you didn't see them yet! Aren't they pretty?" The little girl gushed happily, showing off for Eiji. She shifted again then, holding up her new bear.

"And some crippled fake detective gave me this for christmas!" She giggled then smiled. "I'm joking, his name is Jameson. He said he knew you!" Her smile faded then, lessened. "He said mean things about you, Eiji... that you were lying to me and tricking me..." She frowned, hugging the teddy bear to her chest, burrying her face in it and looking up at him through her eyelashes, her eyebrows pulled together.

"You're... not... right, Eiji..?"

Eiji looked at the things unamused, then back at her. He listened as she spoke, telling him things he had no clue about.

A detective... and a gaijin at that. No wonder he would know about him, at least by name. No wonder he'd dare speak ill about him. He'd ask his people about the guy later and make sure he'd get what he deserved if he was still around. But for now, he had to ease the girl's worries.

"Maybe he was talking about somebody else. I don't know anybody by that name and well, Eiji isn't such an uncommon name in Japan."

That's true... the girl, she wasn't even Japanese. She had lived more than any human had a right to and yet there was so much about the world... about everything that she didn't know.

But even then, she knew Eiji. She knew something about him that perhaps not even he knew or at least he refused to acknowledge. As bleak and dead as Eiji's soul was, Kaoru still managed to make something grow in it; something that was harder and harder to kill every time.

"Kaoru... you know I would never do anything to harm you, don't you?"

"I know... that's why I yelled at him..." She pressed her face against the boy's chest and sighed softly. She couldn't help but wonder, though, if Jameson had been right... She was almost sure she had said Eiji's full name... but her young mind was skipping details.

She shook her head, then hugged Eiji tightly. Eiji wouldn't ever hurt her, and she knew it. There was no reason to have this doubt to be so nervous about! Eiji was her Eiji and he'd always take care of her!

"Eiji saved me... Eiji protects me... even if he's not around all the time I know Eiji loves me..." She squeezed the man tighter still, then looked up at him with a broad smile.

Again, the smile faded quickly and she frowned. "Eiji...it's cold, why are you out here so late?"

Eiji's arms surrounded Kaoru gently as he hugged her, careful not to squeeze too tight.

"I've been having trouble sleeping Kaoru... so many things have happened recently, so much... work."

Eiji sighed. For some reason his mind had been restless the past few weeks. Fighting Creed had been the only thing this year that made him feel alive. Eiji's taste for battle was slowly turning into something else. Even back when he fought at the cities underground pits it had never been anything but plain fun; a hobby for him; but ever since he joined Wo Shing he had less and less time for it and was starting to fear he might get rusty. Then Creed showed up, he and Yun... they both seemed to come just in time to jumpstart the fighter in him and now... now he couldn't turn it off.

That wasn't all though. Long before all this Apostles' fiasco and Creed's appearance Eiji had started thinking, remembering... and wondering. He had visited Lillian long ago and had asked her to help him remember, to find out what was wrong with his head. The only outcome was the same as always: waking up next morning in his own bed without the least trace of a memory of what happened the night before. It seemed useless; no matter how much he thought about it Eiji couldn't put a finger on it... but he knew something was wrong.

"Say Kaoru... have you ever had the feeling you forgot something, something really important but you just can't remember what it was?"

Eiji stared at the blackness ahead for a moment then shook his head as her words finally reached his brain, which seemed to be functioning at a painfully slow pace tonight. He let go of her and took of his coat quickly.

"You said you're cold. Here."

Eiji threw the oversized thing around her shoulders and rubbed her arms to get her warm.

Kaoru nuzzled happily into Eiji's coat, looking rather adorable with the oversized thing on her. She snuggled into his chest and sighed softly, watching her breath roll out from between her lips. Had she ever forgotten something she thought she should remember? Of course she did... a good chunk of her life was receeding into the back of her mind, disappearing.

"I can't remember much before I met you, Eiji... But when I think about it, I cry." She frowned hard and looked up at him, her red hair drifting over her forehead, over her eyes. "I can't remember that, but it has to be important... right?"

She shrugged a ltitle, seeming not too troubled about it. What worries did a girl her age have, anyway? kaoru squirmed after a while though and looked up at Eiji, frowning. "What happened, Eiji...? You need to sleep better... I'll sit with you at night and hum okay?" She grinned pleasantly. "It'll help you get to sleep!"

She was starting to forget, just like he was.

One would think after all the horrible things she herself had unwillingly done, all the pain those things had caused through her, all the people they'd killed... the bloodbaths, the tremendous pain, the agonizing faces, the pleads for mercy... One would think there was no way in hell anyone could simply forget all that and continue living without going absolutely insane.

Either that or you'd have to be insane already to be able to bear it.

Yet here they were, the two of them. Both had seen terrible things in their lives and both simply shrugged it off like it never happened; but how?

Sometimes Eiji would lay awake the entire night and all those images would come. He saw the faces of the people he'd killed... they looked accusingly at him. Only they weren't people from Hyakuji. Eiji hadn't really killed anybody with his own hands here... all deaths had been delegated to his men. No, not in Hyakuji... so where then?

"Maybe that will work... it is something I haven't tried after all."

Kaoru was starting to forget... it was good. He couldn't think of anything better for her than to have all those memories erased. The thought of taking her to Lillian had even crossed his mind briefly only to be dismissed almost instantly. It seemed that wouldn't be necessary after all, anyway.

Unlike Kaoru though, it seemed the opposite was actually beginning to happen to Eiji, and the more he remembered, the more restless he got.

Shaking all those thoughts off Eiji picked Kaoru up and forced a tiny smile in his lips.

"So how come you're so cold and yet you want to eat ice cream, wouldn't you rather eat something warm?"

He could feel himself changing. It was something he'd never felt before and yet was strangely familiar. With all the power he'd gained he could also feel a slight loss of self-control, and it worried him. He was still fine, but what if someday he wasn't? He had thought about it countless times before but now the possibility felt real and he couldn't trust Kaoru to Hiro anymore; the man was followed by danger much more so than he was. Eiji had to think of a way to keep her safe... even from himself.

"I like cold stuff..." The girl murmured against Eiji's neck, yawning softly. She hadn't been sleeping very well lately herself. Kaoru was always restless, always nervously tossing and turning... She couldn't seem to get comfortable in her own skin.

But with Eiji... Sleep was coming easy. She was relaxing, calming... In his arms the girl was able to just... be calm.

Kaoru shifted a little in his arms, hugged his neck a bit tighter, then remained still with her eyes closed. "I guess... Ramen would be good too..." The girl nodded a little, and let out another softy little yawn.

"I'm sleepy, Eiji.."

There he stood, a cold-blooded murderer in the middle of Hyakuji's cemetery, holding little Kaoru in his arms. Looking at her sleepy face and closed eyelids, Eiji Ishida, head of Wo Shing, couldn't possibly do anything but whatever she asked him to.

Her face was so sweet... so... familiar. Ever since the moment he met her the girl had somehow reminded him of somebody. He didn't know who it was but it seemed as if he'd met someone like Kaoru a very long, long time ago. Sometimes the feeling was so strong he thought he was going crazy. A little gesture, the way she sometimes looked at him, a word she used here and there... small details like those took him aback as if it was a deja-vu.

"Who are you, Kaoru-chan..." - Eiji whispered to himself under his breath as he started walking towards the exit of such desolated place.

He reached into his pocket for his cellphone, instinctively thinking of calling a car to pick them up, but he stopped.

"Bah, we don't need no car do we? Let's go just the two of us, no need for others to come and spoil it."

"Silly Eiji..." She murmured into his neck, yawning and snuggling closer, hugging him tighter. "I am Kaoru... who else would I be?" The girl clung tighter still to him when he mentioned being together, just the two of them, and make a soft happy noise.

"Eiji-kun... I miss you.. can you stop being busy now? With whatever you do every day... I miss you so much.." She hugged him tighter and spoke in a quiet whisper, her little voice breaking, wavering. "You're a-all I have...Please stop being busy... o-or can I help? Can Kaoru help Eiji...? Please?"

Eiji sighed. Not now, not ever.

"I'll try to make more time for you, I promise. And if I ever find something you can help me with I'll let you know, but for now there's really nothing, Kaoru."

Making his way out of the graveyard, Eiji started walking towards the busier side of town. Maybe someday he would tell her the truth, maybe one day she would find out for herself. But not today.

Wo Shing was on the verge of something important, something that would take him away from her often, much more so than before. He needed to find a way to keep her safe and away... and make sure she wouldn't wander into stupid detectives who talk too much for their own good.

So much to do, and so little time...

"Let's go eat that ramen, if you promise to stop sneaking out of the house I'll get you some ice cream as well."
