A Place to Lay Her Head; open

Payton Hackthorne

It was nearly eleven at night, when Payton arrived back in Salem. It had seemed like an eternity since she had last been here, and everything seemed so changed. Perhaps nothing had changed but Payton. More jaded than ever, Payton could not believe she was returning to the place she had left her heart. However, Payton being Payton, she could not look down a challenge, and she truly did need the closure.

In the morning Payton would secure a domicile, and begin looking for a place of employment. Perhaps the quidditch store would be hiring. Until then she really needed a place simply to lay her weary head. It was not easy to apparate long distances, so Payton was forced to travel by boat. Worse the boat had arrived late at night. Who ever heard of a boat arriving late at night?

Guiding her trunk with her wand, Payton placed it on the floor beside the counter, then stowed her wand into her robes. It didn't look as though anyone would be around to help her and that she might end up sleeping in the lobby, or perhaps drinking the night away in the bar, but Payton hollered for help regardless.

"Excuse me! Is anyone there?"

Payton decided to wait a few seconds before calling for help again.

Another night, another set of meals that the patrons of Salem just never seemed to understand or appreciate.

"Cretins" Jacques mumbled to himself as he sat at the desk planning the menu for the next day. He had sent the rest of the kitchen staff home nearly an hour ago and was alone working through the list of ingredients he would need from the wharf in the morning.

He heard a voice in the front of the Inn, and knowing that Riegel had already left for the evening, that he was the only employee left in the place. "Zoot alore! Can no one leave a Chef in peace?"

Wiping his hands after he placed the shopping list into the pocket of his apron, Jacques pushed through the kitchen door and out into the dining room.

"Ello? There is no one at the desk. Can I 'elp you?" He had only heard the voice not seen the person behind it. That is until he turned the corner.

She stood impatiently, her red hair striking in the lamp light from the overhead chandelier.

Jacques moved to the front of the desk. "I am only the Chef, but I know there are rooms if you are looking for lodging. I am sorry but if you are after food the kitchen is closed."

He reached below the counter and retrieved the register. "Yes well if you would fill in the register, We have a suite or just a room." He looked up and smiled "Which would you prefer?"

Payton waited rather impatiently, tapping her foot, for someone to assist her. About to call out once more for help, a familiar voice broke through her thoughts.

"Ello? There is no one at the desk. Can I 'elp you?"

Payton could recognize that voice anywhere. It was a voice that visited her dreams and haunted her nightmares. It was a voice that her fondest memories were made around, but also her greatest heartbreak. It was the voice of the man who left her without any notice, more crushed than she had ever been in her life.

Payton braced herself for the onslaught of emotion she would be experiencing when she saw the face that the voice belonged too, and then, there it was.
Jacques had changed very little since the last time she had seen him. Yes, he was slightly older and perhaps a bit more careworn, but he still could make her heart skip a beat.

Expecting some sort of recognition on his part Payton waited to see him squirm a bit, being that the lady he scorned was standing in front of him. No, instead Jacques offered her the guest registry. Payton's mouth dropped open and she stood dumbfounded for perhaps longer than she should have. Pulling it together though, Payton finally allowed the maelstrom of thoughts to bubble forth.

"What in the bloody heck is your problem! Do you not recognize me at all! You have to recognize me, you broke....I mean we.....well....I....what is your problem?"

Payton's demeanor visibly diminished and she sighed audibly to herself, "How stupid was I?"

Jacques looked at the woman in front of him. She seemed very upset with not only the lack of service, but with him personally.

"Pardon nez moi Madmoiselle, but I did not mean to offend. I am only just back from Europe and I spent a very long time there after the tragedy I experienced." Jacques turned to retrieve the key for the woman.

"You do remind me very much of someone who was very important to me, but alas she was lost when the dark wizards attacked here. Many were lost that day."

Jacques recalled the memories of his shop being destroyed, the cellar being the only safe place, and then the death of that little first year in his arms. When the dust had settled and the rebuilding was to begin, there was no sign of her. He had searched the village and no one had seen her. Kendall had been too busy to bother with such things, and Wilton and Anna were in the infirmary saving lives.

When he had left, leaving only a note for Wilton, it was as a shattered human with a broken psyche and nothing to live for.

"If you are finished I could assist you with your luggage to your room?"
