Penrith coach Matthew Elliott says his team still needs to improve its execution despite defeating the Sharks in golden point extra time in Cronulla last night.

Jarrod Sammut's field goal four minutes into overtime was enough to give the Panthers a 21-20 win, after they trailed by 10 points half-way through the second half.

Elliott says there is plenty of room for improvement.

"There's a lot of skill in the team, it's not disguised at training, but really well disguised when we hit the field," he said.

"And the nature of the NRL at the moment is that you need to execute skill to be a successful team, so I understand we have to chew down on some errors going through it.

"But at the moment some of the errors are a bit hard to swallow."

Cronulla coach Ricky Stewart says his team should not have allowed last night's game to go into golden point extra time.

He says fortune was not on Cronulla's side.

"The bounce of the ball went against us in the back end of that game, and they kept getting some repeat sets of six on us ... and came over the top of us," he said.
