![]() Willie Mason awaits the kick-off in Gosford. The Sydney Roosters' Gosford hoodoo against Newcastle continued as the Knights powered home in the second half to shock their more fancied opponents 34-20 on Sunday afternoon. The Roosters went to the half-time break leading 20-12 and seemingly in control against a Knights side which had scored two opportunistic tries. But they inexplicably ran out of steam in the second half, going scoreless while conceding four tries in the last 10 minutes to a rampant Newcastle outfit. The Knights frustrated coach Brian Smith early in the second half with poor fifth tackle options, but they always looked as if they could over-run the lacklustre Roosters. Newcastle has now beaten the Roosters just three times in the last 12 encounters between the two teams, but tellingly all the victories have come in Gosford. Stand-in half-back Kurt Gidley and rookie pivot Chris Bailey got the Knights home, with Bailey crossing for two tries including the match-sealer. "That's the first time we've played together (as a halves pairing) but we live together so we know each other pretty well," Bailey told Fox Sports. "It's good to get a win first up." Gidley's stint in the number seven jumper was necessary given an injury to regular half-back Scott Dureau but was also seen as a potential dress rehearsal for State of Origin. He might not have been as spectacular as in previous matches but he was certainly solid enough to suggest he could do the job for the Blues. Counterpart Mitchell Pearce was prominent in the first half but his challenge fell away along with his team's in the second 40 minutes. He was also outshone by team-mate Braith Anasta, who had the ball on a string in the first half. Prop Danny Wicks iced the cake and completed a fairytale comeback for the Knights with a fantastic try after the full-time siren, picking the ball up from dummy half and dashing 60 metres to dot down under the posts. Knights: 34 (C Bailey 2, J Royal, C Paterson, C Vuna, D Wicks tries; K Gidley 5 conversions) Roosters: 20 (C Fitzgibbon, A Roberts, I Soliola, S Kenny-Dowall tries; C Fitzgibbon 2 conversions). |
