Sharks snatch dramatic derby win

Cronulla manufactured a remarkable golden point victory over local rivals St George Illawarra to escape with a valuable 18-16 win at Sydney's Olympic stadium on Saturday evening.

A 40-metre penalty goal by Luke Covell three minutes into extra time was enough to seal the win after Dragons prop Jason Ryles was penalised for slowing down the ruck area.

Moments earlier Covell had the chance to snatch victory with just about the last play of the match in regulation time, but shanked his sideline conversion to send the south coast derby to golden point.

The Dragons looked to have secured the win when Ben Hornby capped off a tidy short-side play to regain the lead at 16-12 with eight minutes to play.

But a dubious high-tackle penalty against Beau Scott gave the Sharks one last chance before Sharks five-eighth Greg Bird put through an all or nothing grubber for Bryson Goodwin.

The Sharks' winger demonstrated miraculous composure and ball control to regather at full pace to touch down in the corner and send the match to golden point.

It was a heartbreaking loss for St George Illawarra who look destined to put aside off-field distractions with a gutsy two points after looking the most dangerous side in the second half.

Apart from a furious final five minutes, it was a workmanlike performance from both sides who put a heavy emphasis on completing their sets and getting to their fifth tackle kicks despite spells of poor handling hampering the contest.

But the Dragons' inability to hold on to a lead on three separate occasions, including the freakish Goodwin effort, cost them dearly.

The most frustrating came against the run of play when Sharks full-back Brett Kearney crept up on the unaware Ben Ellis to regather a Covell grubber after Lagi Setu crossed for the Dragons just 10 minutes earlier.

It was a deserved reward for Kearney who was a constant threat from broken play, while racking up 274 metres courtesy of his dependable returns from Jamie Soward's searching mix of kicks.

Earlier, the Dragons were first to score after Dragons' captain Mark Gasnier drew in numerous defenders to put Josh Morris over in the corner with a nifty flick pass.

But Gasnier's piece of attacking brilliance was erased by a defensive blunder when his opposite number Ben Pomeroy stood him up before off-loading to Bird to score on the half-hour mark. Sharks: 18 (G Bird, B Kearney, B Goodwin tries; L Covell 2 conversions, penalty goal)Dragons: 16 (J Morris, B Hornby, L Setu; J Soward conversion, penalty goal)
