NRL Round Three Teams
Adam McBride
Tuesday March 25, 2008

Two rounds into the 2008 National Rugby League (NRL) Season and there are only four teams who remain unbeaten.

Cronulla have again defied the critics, and punters alike, to win away from home for the second week running.

The Sharks were awesome in toppling the reigning champions Melbourne at the Olympic Park ‘Graveyard’ – a venue where the Storm were unbeaten in its last 32 starts.

However, it’s the red cards issued to front-row forwards Ben Ross and Brett White on striking charges that has captured headlines. Both will plead guilty however intend to challenge the severity of the grading on Wednesday night at the NRL Judiciary.

The coaching corner remains a topical debate with the revelation that Penrith fans are calling for the head of Matt Elliott sooner rather than later. On the club’s official website forum, a supporter group have not held back after the Raiders snatched victory on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Dragons coach Nathan Brown will survive at least another week as his team canvassed the Titans last night in Wollongong.

The new-look Newcastle claimed an unlikely victory from Manly’s grasp in the first golden point extra time game for this season, while the Wests Tigers have proved they are more than a one-man team by disposing of the Cowboys in Townsville on Saturday night without Benji Marshall.

Brisbane kept their Easter tradition of downing the Roosters alive with a superlative comeback win over the Chooks, while across town the Bulldogs notched their first win for the season at the Bunnies expense.

On Sunday afternoon, the New Zealand Warriors welcomed in the new home season with a convincing display over Parramatta.

Round three kicks off again on Friday with two rivalry clashes. In Sydney the Eels face the Knights, while in Brisbane it’s the Queensland derby clash between the Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys.

Tim Smith has been recalled by the Eels at halfback with Brett Finch moving to five-eighth. Newcastle has opted to omit Adam Macdougall from the starting line-up with Keith Lulia to start in the centre.

Sydney Roosters are unchanged despite concerns about Braith Anasta had his nose broken against the Broncos last weekend. For the Storm, with White set to miss at least one week, possibly more, coach Craig Bellamy has named Adam Blair in the front-row forward role.

Former Bronco Clifford Manua has also been added to an 18-man squad that was named earlier today.

A season-ending left knee injury for Raiders’ fullback Will Zillman provides Bronx Goodwin with an opportunity to strut his stuff. It is Zillman’s second knee-reco after the same knee prematurely ended last season.

No such troubles for St George-Illawarra who are unchanged for the showdown in the Nation’s Capital.

Gold Coast head back to their impressive new stadium at Robina where they host travelling Sharks. Cronulla has named Adam Peek to replace Ross in the front-row.

All clubs named their squads for the coming weekend today with most going of unchanged or minor changes, all squads are subject to last minute changes.

Penrith and South Sydney have made positional changes, though the Rabbitohs have recalled Nathan Merritt for the fullback spot, John Sutton to five-eighth with Ben Rogers set to play at halfback.

Wests Tigers welcome Taniela Tuiaki back to the starting line up for Sunday’s match against the Bulldogs. Sonny Bill Williams returns from a knee injury, while Reni Maitua has been omitted from the Bulldogs team.

Manly and New Zealand complete round three at Brookvale, both are unchanged though some concerns for the fitness of Warriors’ centre Jerome Ropati who could miss with an ankle injury.

Below are all the team line-ups that were announced today, along with Radio and Television coverage details. Eastern Daylight Summer Time ends on Sunday, April 6.
