Here's an underbanner template for you to mess with. I don't have time to write a tutorial on how to use it, but you can probably figure out a few things from it. :)

Also, check http://www.gimp-tutorials.com/ for a whole lot of tutorials on how to make some awesome effects with GIMP.

Looks like a great start. :) Now try to figure out how to turn the white into transparency and save like that. Then try to figure out how to blur the edges of the picture, so it kind of blends into the page at the edges.

Here's a quick Paint.NET guide to transparency, Blompty:

1.- Have your Paint.NET open, with the image you wish to have transparent. Click on the picture of a little wand with the yellow box around it to start; image below.

2.- You're almost done, truthfully. Now all you have to do is to check & see how much "tolerance" the item has. This is rather confusing. It took me awhile to understand, but the tolerance is basically how much the little wand will take away. It automatically sets at 50%. For this specific picture, I set it to 8%; image below.

3.- Now you have to click where you want your picture transparent. There will be lines that seem to appear over the item highlighted & when this occurs, the light blue inside of the odd shape is what will be removed & turned to transparency when the "delete" button on the keyboard is clicked. You can always re-set your tolerance to match what you wish to delete; example of what a section will look like when highlighted to be transparent below.
