The Tavern; A laid back role play.

The smell of fresh cider and meats filled the air, in a blend of hearty laughter and cheer. A glorious blue flame flickered from the fire pit of the center of the tavern, where a bard told stories of old and new. Beautiful bar maids and handsome cooks worked about, carrying on the task of keeping the patrons happy. A tall dark silver haired man, Maxamillion, wandered about the tavern. He surveyed it. This was his tavern, The Iron Tabard. This tavern was a tavern that could be any where at any time. People from all over all walks of magic and science fiction could wander into here. This was a universal get away, from the universe itself.

Maxamillion had finally finished his surveying, and took a place at the end of the bar; where a young blonde waitress handed him a glass of his precious, Elverquisst.

Walking up the stairs from the tavern's cellar a rather young, brown haired man sighed while carrying a bucket of water in one hand and a rag in the other, he worked in the tavern keeping the tables and sweeping the floors; sometimes he got to work the bar if he was lucky. Shaking his head slowly he walked over to an empty table and sat the bucket on the floor before dipping the rag into it and cleaning the table. Sure it wasn't the best job in the world, but it put food on the table.

And he got to see magic, oh how he loved to watch the people who brought magic into the tavern, he always wanted to learn but had no talent with it; thus he just stuck to watching.

Maxamillion let his icy gaze wander over to the young one he recently hired. A slight smile formed. He gave a slight flick of his wrist, the fire danced from it's sapphire blue, to a wondrous shade of emerald. He had always wondered how the boy got to a place like this, perhaps that's why he gave him a job. It wasn't needed, of course, it could all be done in moments with magic. However, it felt like the right thing to do.

Maxamillion saw a patron topple some glasses over, spilling the contents on the floor. He gave a glance to the young boy and took a sip of the elverquisst.

Miss Rosaline Thorne was an unusual character, to say the least. Outwardly she appeared to be nothing but a harmless young woman, with long silvery-blonde hair in ringlets and dressed in a simple white gown with a black corset and a knitted black shawl. She was gifted with fairly average magical skills, nothing out of the ordinary. Her face was pleasing enough, but not awe-inspiring by a long stretch. No, the unusual thing was her behaviour. Strange personality quirks. Habits that took a fair amount of getting used to.

She walked into the tavern now, head held high and skirts rustling with the fast pace that she always kept up in public. Her hair was pulled up in a length of black ribbon, a few stray stands falling down over her stormy grey-blue eyes. Reaching the bar, she stopped and ordered a glass of red wine before perching on a stool. Her much-shorter-than-average stature meant that her hobnail-boot-encased feet dangled above the ground a little, her toes not quite reaching the polished floor below.

Somehow the boy knew that this job he performed was unnecessary to say the least, the owner could do magic and so could half the other people who worked within the wooden tavern; he just did this because he was told to. Sighing again he emptied the rag into the bucket and shook his head, smoothing out the sleeves of the brown linen shirt he wore he turned around. Seeing the glasses spill onto the floor he dropped his eyes to the ground, bathed in the emerald light he walked over and knelt down before mopping up the contents and draining the rag into the bucket once more before heading back towards the cellar.

It was going to be a long day for him, and he knew it.

The back corner of the tavern went unnoticed far too often. With piercing chocolate eyes, a middle aged woman glared across the room at the visible workers while she rapped at the dank old table that she was leaning on. Her heavyset build more than filled the chair she was sitting in, her ruby-studded dress enveloping her body and seemingly, the old chair as well.

When she thought she had finally caught the eye of the bartender, she started to raise her hand to get his attention, only to have him look away. She watched his gaze pierce the body of the young woman who had taken a seat at his bar. Typical, she thought. Ignore the old hag for the young one.

The silver-haired senior tipped the glass of red wine to her weathered lips and finished off the last few sips in one gulp. She looked around the bar, noting how disgusting it looked in all it's dark and...testosterone runned glory. Why didn't ol' Max make the place a little more appealing with his magic? She would do it in a moments time if he wasn't more powerful and threatening than she was.

The bartender started to turn her way again. She waves her arm again in hopes of catching his eye. He looked away again.

"Damnit!! What the hell do I need to do to get another glass of wine!?"

He dragged himself back up the cellar steps, sighing quietly as he heard the woman yelling; noting the bartender had once again overlooked the older customer for the younger women at the bar. Walking behind it he started searching the many bottles on a shelf behind it, ignoring the bartender's constant protesting as the boy grabbed another glass and filled it with wine. Carefully he made his way over and sat the glass down in front of her. "I'm sorry for his rudeness miss, anything else I could do for you?"

His voice was quiet, as if he didn't speak much; in truth he didn't, he wasn't supposed to be tending the customers... It wasn't part of the 'job' assigned to him.

The old woman reduced her eyes to slits at the young man set the freshly-poured glass in front of her. She looked him up and down, and decided he wasn't part of the filth that deserved a good scolding. With a sickening smile, the woman pulled a few gold coins out from between her breasts and slid them across the table to the young lad.

"No, young man. But I'm sure you can help this bar learn some manners. And make sure they get a light for this corner! It's no damn wonder nobody can see an old lady over here!"

With that, she took the glass in her hand carefully and took a large sip out of the cool glass, enjoying the feeling of the coolness on her lips and the warm alcohol swishing down her mouth and throat. She waved off the young fellow after shoving her empty glass at him. She proceeded to survey the room once more.

Hearing a shout from somewhere at the back of the Tavern, Rosaline looked up. Her empty gaze found the older woman immediately, and she slowly swept her silvery bangs out of her face to give a questioning look. 'Surely, If she wants to order a drink she should come to the bar?' was what you would expect her thoughts to read if written down. In actual fact though, they were more along the lines of 'I wonder how long she has had that dress.'

With a small shrug of the shoulders, the young woman turned back to her drink, draining the last of it and putting it back down on the desk. She ran her thumb up the bridge of her nose a few times, coughed quietly, and then ordered another glass of wine. She was waiting to meet with someone important, but she didn't have all day.

"I'll get on that light, miss." After collecting the coins and the empty glass he started to walk off, back to the cellar to await his next order of business from Max; when his eyes went to the coins held in his hand. They were gold, something he never thought he'd see in his life time. From serving in this place he received a little pay, but never a single coin of gold, mostly he was paid in silver; it was still enough.

Shrugging the thought off he placed the glass on the counter behind the bar, still eying the coins clutched in his right hand. Surely he would be expected to pay something back to Max, but for now he wanted to enjoy the feeling of being paid more than what he usually received for cleaning up the messes patrons made.

He had noticed the young boy, but not paid any mind to the money he had been given. Ladybug... He thought, it had been a nick name given to the woman who always looked for a reason to cheap shot this place. Yet, she never failed to visit, and never failed to pay well. That ol' flirt... A smirk slid across his face as he gave a shake of his head.

The thoughts of the 'poor lighting' had gotten to him. That is how the back of a tavern is supposed to be. He gave a slight look over to her and began to walk towards her. His hand was risen up in the motion of a gun. He mouthed the word 'Bang'... With that the entire corner she was in, strobed with flickers of blues and pinks. He stopped at her table.

'Please do accept my apologies, I feel that this not only suits your lighting problems; it is flashy enough to get the attention you would like.' The slight smirk on his face was the only sign of the absolute enjoyment in his actions.

Chestnut eyes focused on the young boy as he walked away to the bar. The half smile she had before remained on her wrinkled lips as she admired the boy pondering over the coins in his hand. Her ultimate image was one of a cold-hearted bitch, but she made sure that those who deserved it got their fair share of happiness, even if it was in the form of gold coins. Her life was winding down. It was about time she got rid of some of her worth.

Her attention with the boy quickly disintegrated as Max started to approach her table. He threw her head back in haughty laughter at his comment, admiring the new flickering lights around her.

"They are perfect, Max, but they don't quite match what I have on." She motioned down to her old dress, a thick black fabric barely visible through the sheets of red jewels hanging on top. "But I guess these old things do sparkle a little more with different colors of light."

She kicked the chair on the other side of the table out, motioning for him to take a seat.

"How's life, old fellow?"

"It's quite alright, Ladybug." The lights suspended themselves in a flux of pink and blue, making the corner haze over in shades of a violet blue. He took time taking his seat, allowing his icy eyes to meet those of hers. "As to the lights not matching, I agree. I feel, perhaps, a shade of the original darkness was more appealing to you." He smirked as he let his hand rest the goblet, he held so patiently, onto the table. He allowed his lips to part after a moments pause. "Still I wonder, with all of that darkness. You allow a young boy such money?" He smirked a bit and downed the emerald liquid in the goblet.

"Oh, Max. You certainly know how to charm a lady." Ladybug's voice was not as graceful and soothing as it used to be. Although she was never a smoker, old age had hit her hard. The wars of the past had taken their toll on her. Although she had used a lot of magic to remain a young witch for much of her life, her soul finally needed to move on.

"I did no such thing. He must have found it on the ground somewhere." She took the silent moment following her statement as a chance to indulge in the crimson-filled glass before her. She smiled as she set the glass back down on the table, swallowing down the large gulp slowly in order to savor the flavor.

The tavern seemed calm for a moment, the emerald flame in the center of the tavern dancing to the music being played; when the tavern shook for a moment, a loud bang echoing from the cellar of the Iron Tabard. The door to the cellar was pushed open to allow a cloud of black smoke to billow out, followed by a young Alexander, face blackened with soot. He was quite the site, his hair was a mess and his face was blackened with ash save his eyes. and he was wearing what seemed to be an old tattered robe.

He had been trying to use magic again, he thought he was doing pretty good until everything went well; boom. Using fire around a barrel of whiskey probably was the first mistake, then the second was his not being able to control it. Slowly the soot covered Alexander walked over to Max and coughed, looking to him for a second, "I can work this off, can't I?" He looked around the tavern which was fine, the cellar was almost destroyed though.

His quick response of 'Sure' was cut off by a rumble below his feet. "Alas, another test of my magic and machinery is about to be tested."

For, by the time the young lad arrived to gain his attention, the damage will have been undone. It was something he worked on with a great alchemist and machinist, named Felix. Such technology would repair damages at the most basic molecular levels. This, however, was not shown on his face. His wise approach to things changed this matter.

"Magic again Alexander?" A small pause drifted from him to the young man. The air in the tavern was already fixated on laughter, for, things of the rowdy nature weren't always out of sight in a place like this. "You get four hours a day to train. Yet, here we are, my merchandise destroyed." He leaned in low, "If the high Matriarch of Quizen Shi' Doomsayer were to find out that her direct exports to myself had been burned, by some young boy..." His eyes literally changed from hues of ice, to bloodshot crimson. "She'd have him slowly separated, ligament by ligament." A smirk slid across his face as he sat back up. His eyes returning to their fluctuation of normality. "However, you, are lucky. I believe, if you fend off the temptation to practice magic while working; she may just think of it as an accident." He cackled, knowing there were no such things as the above mentioned. "I'd suggest you continue your clean up, up here, your boom knocked down some drinks of the patrons." He pointed to a table where, not only drink fell, but gold coin as well.

Ladybug jumped at the sound of the explosion, utterly taken aback with the force it emitted. She grasped the table in an attempt to lessen the movement that her big body would undoubtedly try to make. This stupid pub rattled all too often. Old eyes surveyed the surroundings at the sound of breaking glass, noticing that the only things that didn't shake were the hovering pink and blue lights above her head.

Her attention was stolen when the young man from before emerged from the cellar, covered in black soot from head to toe. She tuned Max out as she got lost in her own thoughts, wondering if she has been a correct judge of character for the young fellow. She shook her head at the boy, making sure he knew she was questioning her decision to tip him so well.

"Y-Yes... Sir..." Alexander turned on his heel and started walking off, all he wanted to do was be able to use magic. But how was he going to clean this mess up if the cellar was blown up? Kneeling down by the table he started picking the coins on the ground up before handing them back to the person who had dropped them. "Sorry, for that." He looked around the tavern for something, finally spotting a mop in the corner of the room. Slowly he walked over to it and took it, beginning to clean up the spilled drink as he got back to the table.

Walking back to Max with his head hung and eyes on the ground, he knew that he was going to be scolded again. Or at least that's what he was afraid that was going to happen. And he made the old woman question her decision, he felt the cold eyes of the patrons on his soot covered figure; laughing every time he passed a table. "I think, I'll never try any kind of magic again... First I caused a mop to start hitting people over the head, the second I flooded this place, and now I almost blow it up... Magic isn't meant for me." He muttered it quietly under his breath with no intention for anyone to hear it, but suspected Max probably did since he was right next to him.

His attention snapped to the young man again. This time he would let the words slide. The whole point of hiring the boy was to give him a place to test his abilities out. After all, why scold someone who rattled Ladybug. It took quite an effort not to look back at her, without laughing. He decided it was time for another color change, red flooded the tavern. The emerald flame seemed to melt into a shade of crimson and red. A few ooh's and aah's came from this color shift. Which had managed to take the brutest of attention off of Alexander, and back toward the bard who began telling his stories again.

Wrinkled, aged hands released their grip from the table as Ladybug leaned back comfortably in her chair once more. She looked at her right hand only to discover that it had instinctively gone straight for the base of her wine glass to ensure that it was not one of the many drinks that toppled to the ground during the explosion. This brought a slight smile to her pasty face as she lifted the glass to her lips and took a long sip, sighing heavily as she returned the glass to it's place on the wooden table.

"Max, why did you hire that boy if all he does is cause trouble? I've been here during his other 'incidents' and don't act like they were just accidents." She looked to the old man sitting at the table with her, unconsciously twirling her wine glass on the table. "Tell me why I shouldn't blackmail you due to the fact that the Matriarch of Quizen Shi' Doomsayer's valuables were almost blown up?"

He laughed, not realizing how believable his act had been. "Perhaps you could, although, you'd probably end up in an asylum saying something about a long dead and mostly mythical queen of death." He knew the words would be enough to turn her attention off the boy. "Either way, it's simple, I hired him because we need the help. No one else wants to do this work, and it provides him good teachings." His soft emerald drink had been finished off after that. "Now that I know you'd do such a thing, why should I allow you to be welcome here?" Another cackle left his mouth.

"Please don't!" Alexander placed his hands on the table, looking at Ladybug, "There's no reason to blackmail Max for things I've done!" Alexander quieted down a bit as he dropped his hands back to his sides, looking down at the ground for a moment. "I'm sorry for my outburst." He turned around and started to walk away, rubbing the black soot off his face before shaking his head slowly. I'm here to practice what I can and I think I'm starting to test the boundaries of my welcome. He walked outside the Tavern for a moment, staring out at the street in which was his time. He hadn't been outside the tavern in years, and just staring out at the bright sun made him wince.

Turning back around he walked inside, taking a seat at the bar he rested his head down on it's polished surface.

Scowling, Ladybug shifted in her chair uncomfortably, tightening her grip on her wine glass. She started to pursue the fact that the boy wasn't needed to clean, as Max could just use magic, but she decided against it. She was cutting Max off. He had had far too much fun with her for one day.

Ladybug rolled her eyes at the lad during his outburst, and let her eyes drift as he walked away. She annoyingly waved her arms at the pink and blue lights that fluttered around her head as the fireplace filled the room with the color of blood. After shifting in her chair again, she took another sip of her wine, leaving the glass only half empty now.

"Max, don't you have someone else to go sit with and annoy?"

" 'Fraid the only way I can protect myself is to keep an eye on you." His gaze drifted toward the pink and blue mix, it vanished, filling the corner with the same crimson stain as the rest of the tavern. He looked back to the boy who had already wandered off. "Crazy kid reminds me of myself at that age." He shook his head a bit. "Then again that was hundreds of years ago." He laughed slightly, knowing the age never showed on his face; just the silvery hair that flowed to his shoulders, was a slight sign that he might be old.

"An eye on me? What ever for, old timer?"

Ladybug's mind wandered back to her younger years; whether that was decades ago, or a couple hundred years ago...she had lost track long before she began spending time at the tabard. She has met Max before amongst her magical travels around the world. Than ran into each other several times, never once taking a chance to get to know each other very well. Now, Max's place was the place to be if you were anyone classified outside 'normal.'

Ladybug had nothing to show for the long life she had led, nothing but the wrinkles and scars the her body now showcased.

She took another sip of whine, nearly emptying her glass.

"Why don't you get your boy to get me another one of these?"
