Thick, heavy eyelashes fluttered reluctantly open to reveal the deep, swirling brown eyes of Alyssa Moore. She yawned softly and sat up, putting a hand to her head as she looked around herself cautiously. The last thing she remembered was putting Joshua down in his crib for a nap. After that, she vaguely remembered the phone ringing, and going to answer it, but she couldn't quite recall anything more.

Still groggy and nonplussed, she made her way into her little boy's room. She didn't know how long she'd been knocked out, so it was probably a good idea to check on him. Seeing the crib empty nearly gave the young woman a heart attack, but it seemed to kick-start her brain into action.

Jumping to life, she rushed back into the living room of the flat she shared with her fiancée, David, and picked up the receiver of the phone, punching in the digits for his cell phone as quickly as her trembling hand would allow. Maybe he'd come home to find her sleeping, and taken Josh out to give her some peace? That seemed unlikely though. Why would he leave her sprawled on the floor? Why hadn't he left a note? There were so many questions buzzing in her head, but no matter how long the phone rang, there was still no answer.

Twenty excruciating minutes passed as Alyssa dialled every phone number that came to mind, each with the same lack of response as the first. Her mother, her best friend, the emergency services, the elderly woman on the ground floor... No one was anywhere. Alyssa felt sick. Hot, wet tears welled up in her eyes, and broken sobs started to build up in her throat as she sat slowly down on the edge of the sofa. Her little boy was missing, and so was everyone else she knew. And she had no idea what to do about it.
