Every bar in the Portland city limits was overflowing with drunkards, stumbling around the sidewalk, falling off their barstools, singing Irish drinking songs. It was only 9 o'clock in the evening, and people were already drowning out their lives with fermented goodness. Standing at only 5'5", Francine was hardly someone who could plow through drunk crowds by herself on a Friday night. The head of a fraternity on campus told her about a bar that his dad used to visit, just outside of Portland. It was a small, quaint place that would no doubt be much easier to sit in than any place within walking distance of her school. Francine pulled her waist length, blond hair back into a pony tail before sitting on a nearby bench to wait for the bus. She pulled just enough money out of her designer purse for bus fare, then clung her bag tightly to her side as she waited, eying the drunk, unconscious man on the sidewalk a few feet away. Once the bus finally arrived, she quickly ran on board, putting her money in the slot at the front. Francine proceeded to the middle of the bus and sat down by an Emergency Exit, plopping her purse in the seat beside her to avoid the company of those she would define as 'seedy.' Her eyes darted around the dark objects outside her window as the bus weaved its way through town before dropping her off half an hour after she had boarded. The bus stayed within city limits, leaving her with a 20 minute walk to her new destination. |
