While I dream/plan to build this, I actually play on THIS!! LOL.

:P So, some pics of my budget Gamespot wheel. And my "system". The PS2 is somewhere under the computer case the TV's on. (My future gaming computer hopefully!! LOL.) At least it's in surround sound!!

Posted Image

Then of course, the Hot Rodder in me HAD to modify even this!! First the bungee cord to tighten up the steering. (Lot's of duct tape too to angle that sucker JUST right!!) ;)

Posted Image

Posted Image

Here, the "driving position" kinda reminds me of my old '51 Chev!! Though for a "proper" driving seat, I use a couple pillows. MiLady cackles in delight as each night I come to bed and WHACK hit the bed rather hard just as I remember "Oh DAMN,. Forgot my pillows!!"

Posted Image

So, the overall experience...

Posted Image

And of course the ultimate customization. I HAD too!!) My 8 year old says "Daddy, WHY would you put a Ford emblem there?" She just shakes her head at her dear old Dad!!

Posted Image

But I like it....

Posted Image

Hopefully next week I can get that Logitech wheel. Oh, GLEEEE!!!!!!!

MiLady says that the scariest word in my entire vocabulary are 'I've got an idea!!" :D

She says smoke starts coming out my ears and she can hear gears grinding.

So, today, i'm playing video games with my poverty pedals and I think, "I've got an idea!!" :'(

So, I'm playing GT4 and of course on GT4 you can see the input of the brake and throttle and I start noticinmg that my pedals seem to be "all in" real quick!

So, I pick up the pedals and sure enough, full throttle is about an inch down!! No wonder I'm having trouble modulating stuff. My theory is in TOCA 3 this morning I'm spinning off the track because I'm "flooring it" off the corners.

So, lets take a look. I'm thinking if I can change the leverage or something.....

Posted Image

Some of these pics are pretty fuzzy as our camera ain't set up for "close ups" so be patient as I'm hoping they're at least clear enough to show how when I get obsessed, my mind works. (?)
Posted Image

Well, it uses cogs and no way with what I have to mod that!! LOL. Um...Lisseee..

I know. Maybe if I can add resistance!!. So, when I got the new (used) PS2 fatty for my daughter's 8th b/day, (Hers had died 2 weeks before her birthday and considering I'd got her a new (used) Ratchet and a new (used) Sly game for her birthday.....Had to get her a replacement!! And fattys are now down to $40!!!)

So the controller had these weird rubbery things in the analogue sticks. We removed them and today as I'm thinking "What to use??" EUREKA!! I KNOW!!

Posted Image

So, let's just fit them into the pedal....

Posted Image

Well, test drive. Um. Better but I'm thinking I COULD do better....

Hmmmm.
(Rummages through basement)
I wonder.....????
Posted Image

Maybe if I just shorten the travel.....(Takes pedals apart AGAIN!!!!

Electrical tape is my friend!!

Posted Image

Okay much better, but???

Takes pedals apart AGAIN!!

See the bolt in the middle?? Puts pedals back together. (Gee, I hope these threads don't give out!!)

Posted Image

Of course, NOW, the pedals won't BUDGE!! Ooops!!

So, I wonder if we put the nut underneath to give the spring some spring? (Takes pedals apart AGAIN!!) And maybe use this little white thingie?

Posted Image

Nope. Won't move.....Takes pedals apart AGAIN!! LOL.

NOW we take apart the bottom stuff and put the original nut and black rubbery thingie at bottom istead of inside spring....

Posted Image

Fit it in just right. (Teeheeeee, where's that coffee??)

Posted Image

Put it back together and YAY!! Not perfect. Feel is better than before. But pedal now stops at end of "full throttle".

It's enough control that I shaved a full 2 secons off at Sears Point with a completely stock (exceot for R2 rubber) '76 Golf. I always find it hardest to improve times with relatively slow cars!! LOL. Even more telling to me is that I'm consistantly within a second a lap EVERY lap fpor 9 laps and the SLOW lap was a second faster than my best lap yesterday that took me 10 leaps to do. (The 9 before were 2-3 seconds slower!!)

And I tried the race in TOCA 3 that I couldn't even stay with the pack in this morning and though I didn't do GREAT, I DID stay with the "pack" so I'm happy. Are Logitech wheels more linear??

"I got an idea!!" part 2!

Um, yeah, I KNOW it's %:30am but I had an idea. LOL.

So, I was thinking, what is the right height for a wheel? Mine seems rather low.

Ah but HOW to do this. And don't want to wake the wife and kiddies....

OH!! I know!! I happen to have TWO PS2 boxes!!

Posted Image

Of course, they will collapse.

AH!! But we have MILLIONS of books!! Let's stuff those suckers!

Posted Image

Heeheeheeeeee...

Posted Image

Except I found now it's TOO high!! So my next step is to half the amount of books. Don't feel like uploading anymore pics, I want to PLAY!!

Later for now!

That was better but wobbly as all wobbliness. Wobblier than Britney Spears on Valium!!

Soooo.....

Novels ain't so good BUT, we have a KAZILLION VHS tapes!! And now they can be USEFUL!! They should be strong enough to support the table right? Right? Um, maybe. Let's find out!! (Famous last words!!)

Almost fits but for that gap. Ah, my old slippers!! Perfect. Pic will be later. I'm gonna play!!!

Um, those dreaded thoughts popped into my head today. "I got an idea!!" :P

Soooo.....I now have "hung" pedals!! Sort of......

So, I thought if I inverted the pedals and re-assigned them, I could do this. But how??

Let's take a look around....

Ph, I know!! The box they came in!! Add some books to wiegh it down!!!!

Posted Image

And....

Um. No.

Anyways, lets take them apart and move my "doo-hickey" to the brake pedal. I thought of switching them side to side but then decided it wqas more trouble than it was worth, especially if day after tomorrow I get those Logitech pedals!! Good move as I noticed there's already two screwholes stripped. Whoops!! LOL.

Posted Image

MORE uses for old VHS tapes!! And yes that IS adead PS2 Slimline underneath!! I use what I can scrounge and I do this "on the fly" LOL.

Posted Image

Almost done. And this has to be my last mod for a while as I used all the tape!!!! HAHAHAAA!! :'(

Posted Image

Cool. Since this pic was taken I moved the pedals MUCH further forward and I did use that box of books after all to weigh it in place.

Posted Image

So, right off, I shaved hald a second off a lap and it feels MUCH more natural and easier to modulate that lousy one inch of usable pedal!! heeheehee.

As I mentioned on TWIP, I was running laps at Sears Point in GT4 with a stock '76 VW GTi and was consistantly 10 seconds off my best time, running 2'11s over and over and over....

THEN, I realized I was runnning SIM tires!! My best lap was on R2s!!

So, 3 laps of R2s and I'm happy as I can see the potential.
My best was/is 2'01.416 and 3 laps in with this wheel and I did a 2'01.516

Close enough! :D

Tomorrow...the 'Ring!! LOL. And if I get up early enough, maybe try out TOCA3!!

The tease shot///

Like I said before I'm out of tape!!

Posted Image\

The table was too thick for the clamps so I found what I think is out old keyboard shelf....LOL.

Posted Image

Well, it does the job! Removes the "extensions", LOL. But had to lower my "seat" also buy removing the cushion and using it as a back prop.

And I guess i should show pics of the "computer station". :ermm:

Posted Image

Yes, the girls' computer is all open and the case is cracked open also. It's old and ancient and was freezing a lot as the fan had failed. I took a fan out of a parts computer, spliced it with the connector for theirs, propped the "replacememt" fan on the carcass of the old one in the bottom of the case and aimed it to blow onto the CPU. It's not real fast but does at least allow the thing to RUN!!!

Posted Image

The obligatory Miss Olivia shot as 5 year olds are wont to say "Take MY PICHURRRRRRR, DADDEEE!!!!"
