Margaret Thatcher will have a £3million state funeral.

The Tory will be the first Prime Minister since Sir Winston Churchill to be given the honour. Plans, backed by the Queen and Gordon Brown, have already been drawn up to mark the occasion at St Paul's cathedral in central London. It has not yet been decided if her body will lie in state at Parliament's Westminster Hall.

The plans will cause fury across the land because her time in office in the 1980s was deeply divisive and she was hounded out by her own party over the hated poll tax. Labour MP, former miner Ronnie Campbell, was stopped from proposing a Commons' motion putting a stop to the lavish send-off.

He said it would split the country. Thatcher, 82, closed mines, shipyards and steelworks in Labour's heartlands and her "cruel and divisive reign" should not be commemorated.

I can't comment on this as I was born in the middle of 1980's so I don't remember a jot of it being a young 'un but I do know it's highly controversal and will and has caused debate over this issue so feel free to fill me in (the only education I have of it is that my Dad despises her).

It has to be a big public event... because a lot of people in this country will want to break out the tressle tables and have a few street parties. It's going to be a celebration on the scale of England winning the football World Cup.

Can't say I'll mourn her any... when the Devil finally comes to claim her!!!

She needs a state funeral! That's the only way to stop conspiracy theories that's she's not really dead... Everybody needs the proof! They could make a fortune if they charged a quid to kick the corpse...

Actually she is one of the few politicians I respect. I may not agree with everything she did but she had the rare courage to actually stick with her convictions. I actually do think she is one of the most well-known politicians of the 20th Century and deserving of a state funeral.

Funny you mention that, Mock The Week and especially Frankie Boyle had a field day with this. Boyle said: "It will be the first time the 21 gun salute will be aimed at the coffin" and "For that price, we could buy shovels and dig a hole so deep, we can deliver her to Satan himself".

Talking from living up North, if such an option was given it would be taken with open arms.

Sounds like G.W.Bush. A horrible leader and makes a lot of wrong decisions, but at least he actually does what he says he's going to do, unlike every other politician who has run for presidency in the past 20 years.

Still doesn't excuse him for making every WRONG decision possible.

Thatcher is more of a man than most of the politicians over the last 20 years... Feminists even comment on it. How fcuked up is that? What she did during the Falklands took some seriously large brass balls...

Having said all that, let's take a look at Britains leaders since the 70's... Actually, let's not, it's too fn depressing... I HATE GORDON BROWN...

Frankie Boyle was indeed damn funny... that Satan comment left me gasping for air!!

Thatcher was nightmare... but she almost harked back to the Golden era of prime ministers who did what the hell they wanted and sod the plebs. Frankly it was a quality I love about Lord Palmerston... but then I didn't have to live through his "reign".
