Hmmmm, could well be a valid argument. From what I've seen it looks like a film with gorgeous visuals but still has the humour... I'm hoping it will be a stand out on its terms! |

One could argue that the mythos of Pan's Labyrinth could have easily been brought up in Hellboy, so the point is kind of moot. |

I dont see how the visuals in Pan's Labryinth could effect the outcome of Hell Boy 2's success - design wise, its clearly a style synonymous with Del Toro and not just the movies themselves. Saying that they look alike is kind of like saying that the next muppet movie wont do well cos the muppets look the same. I'm glad they didnt go down the root with sticking to Mike Mignola's artwork, he's a better writer than he is penciller imo. |

And as said before, Pan's Labyrinth was Del Toro doing Lovecraft without actually adapting Lovecraft, and Mignola borrowed heavily from Lovecraftian elements when writing numerous Hellboy stories. So really Del Toro would be doing a disservice if he didn't make Hellboy II look like Pan's Labyrinth. That came off far more redundant than I'd anticipated. |

You could say that, except when you're looking at a muppets movie, you know you're looking at muppets and they're all going to look like that...it's kinda like their species or something. I don't think of Rambo when I look at American Beauty just because they're all humans. However every time I see a Hellboy 2 commercial, I can't get myself to not think "hey, wasn't that exact same character in Pan's Labyrinth?" Style or not, it looks like Del Toro took characters directly out of his opus to include in this movie. It likely won't impede on the success of Hellboy (I never said it would in the first place), but even if they don't know it's Del Toro that did both movies, if they've seen Pan, they'll think of it during this film, which for me is a HUGE distraction. I thought Pan was incredible, visually...the story itself was passable...I just don't want to think I may as well be watching a PL sequel because Hellboy is overloaded visually with what looks like a clone of Pan's Labyrinth. It's like taking Arnold and having him do The Terminator, and then a role where his character and the scenery are extremely similar to The Terminator, but are supposed to be something completely different. |

I see what you're saying Ben, but what I meant by the muppets was essentially about Henson's creature design. They have that unique style that you can pinpoint in all movies, but as you said, it probably wont hinder it. I do agree that the level of design in Pan's Labyrinth has been carried over into Hellboy 2, but when it's that imaginative, it's essentially Del Toro saying you've all seen Pan Labyrinth, if you loved what you saw there, you aint seen nothing yet. I guess we'll see if his design style changes when/ if he makes At the Mountains of Madness... |

Yeah, I'm seeing it anyway, but I'm also really looking forward to The Spirit, The Watchmen, Captain America, The Avengers, The Punisher, etc. I love superhero movies...about 98% of the time anyway. |

Ahhh, Hellboy II...mediocrity with incredible visuals at its finest. Visually, it was breathtaking how detailed and intricate it was, but then, like we know, that's del Toro's trademark, and really, the saving grace to this movie. Acting was a little stiff and bland at times, with dialogue that was barely there half the time and a plot that seemed all over the place.. Action sequences were incredible, but you have to go through the stumbles of their "storyline" to get to them. All in all, it felt like a Sci-fi movie I've already seen before numerous times on Saturday afternoon basic cable. Seth MacFarlane's Krauss character made me want to follow Stewie's lead by hopping on board a plane, flying to Hollywood, and punching him in the face at his own mansion. |

I loved it personally. It's Hellboy. What was on screen was exactly what I wanted in regards to the character. |
