Iron Man Dir. Jon Favreau Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Gwenyth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges Okay, I'll get it out of the way. THIS is how you do a superhero film. Movies like this really shed light on exactly how piss poor the last few Marvel superhero films have been, Spidey 3 included. You have to have a good script to make a good movie, and the last few Marvel entries have been piss poor in that regard. It's like people suddenly forgot how to structure a proper film. When you have a script that's worth shooting, you get the people who are right for the part. I don't know who thought Jessica Alba would be a good pick for Sue Storm, but that person was high. That person has issues. Here, we see that spot-on casting can make even the borderline aspects of the script work 100% because the people working with the material know how to handle themselves. Nicholas Cage should not have been Ghost Rider. He does not embody ANYTHING of or about that character. Same goes for the aforementioned Jessica Alba and Sue Storm. Those were casting stunts based on name recognition. Robert Downey Jr. is not what you would call a box office draw, but the man can act. And so can his stellar supporting cast, made up of a bevy of Oscar nommed warhorses who put in performances that give everyone a sense of depth. A great cast working a great script coupled with amazing special effects, and never ONCE in it's two hour running time do you get bored. The pace flows very fluidly and by the time the credits come, you already want a sequel. I would venture to say that Iron Man is Marvel's only perfect superhero film. They deviated from the comics just like Spidey and X-Men, but unlike those films, the essence of what made the character work for forty years is still in the film 100%. Spider-man lacks the necessary wit and banter that makes him so fun to read. And X-Men, well, they did a good job there up until the third, but even the first two had their flaws. Iron Man is so close to perfect it's actually kind of surprising. And I think alot of it has to do with the fact that Marvel itself financed and oversaw the production, not a major studio. I hope they can follow suit with stuff like Thor, and Captain America. properties that are like Iron Man in that the mainstream really isn't all that aware of the mythos and rather than try to serve it up in a homogenized version, they give us what the fans of the character want and let new ones jump on board. Also. *MAJOR SPOILERS!* Spoiler: click to toggle Seriously. Go see it. Many times so the box office returns give Joe Quesada happytime in the pants. Score: 5/5 |

Good review, Salty. I totally agree. I thought Favreau did a great job, far exceeding any expectations I had for this movie. I read somewhere that Rachel McAdams was his first choice for Pepper Potts. I remember him asking people on Myspace who he should cast. And McAdams was one of the people I suggested...but Gwenyth Paltrow did an incredible job, and in hind-sight I can't imagine anyone else in that role. I think one of the reasons I really dug this movie was because it felt like it was actually taking place in the Marvel Universe. I think the SHIELD presence did a lot to establish that. I'm psyched for the sequel and pretty much all of the movies on Marvel Studio's slate. |
