So... given his close victory over Hopkins... can Calzaghe be called a Legend as opposed to a self-appointed legend killer? Does he need one more victory (Jones Jnr?)? Or is he well short of legend status? |

He's a top fighter, but legend? COME ON... That term gets battered around so much these days its lost all meaning... He's beaten some tough guys, but the state of middleweight boxing these days means his victories count for dick most of the time. |

So what makes a legend and who in today's world of pugilism qualifies for the title? 15 years undefeated is pretty impressive at least... I don't think I'd call him a legend, purely because he isn't a name still. He hasn't had that fight that has captured the imagination. Maybe he'll get that fighting Jones, but will fighting an ageing, over-the-hill fighter be enough? |

15 years undefeated would be more impressive if he fought a list of great fighters, not just good or average but great. Trouble is, a lot of boxing records over the last 10 years or so are padded out with subrate competition. He's fought some tough guys and he's fought people that shouldnt have been standing in the ring with him. That's not his fault, that's management and the climate. How many superior middleweights (super or otherwise) are there out there at the moment that are actually worth a damn? He's beaten a lot of the tougher competition via decision, it's not like he's knocking people out left right and centre - I guess that's a bit harsh, but come on, the legend that beat the best on decision? Doesnt really sound legendary does it? Only time can say whether he'll be a legend, than itself is the defining factor. But he hasnt put on a legend defining fight yet, but as it stands he's still pound for pound, one of the best boxers on the planet at the moment and he'll certainly be remembered for his current title run, which as it stands could be considered the stuff of legend... |

At this point is he a legend? No. If he continues to fight and defeat everyone, yes, he will be a legend. He doesn't have to beat huge names, he just has to fight and defeat worthy competition. At this point in time, he's almost on the level of Mayweather as the top athletes in the sport. I feel he can beat Pavlik, Taylor, Jones Jr., Tarver, etc. There really isn't much out there that can give him too much trouble (maybe Winky Wright because he is better than Hopkins and has a style similar to B Hop). Retire undefeated against quality opposition and he will be a legend. |

It looks like Calzaghe has one more fight in him before he retires... unless he goes for the home and away bouts against Jones Jr which is a possibility. I can't see him sticking around longer for bouts against the likes of Tarver and Pavlik. He's just starting to become a name in the UK, and that'll get him other opportunities, and I think he's too smart to stick around too long and risk getting beaten when he's past it. He has that streak to defend, and arguably if he loses it, he loses more opportunities outside the sport. |
